Let's compile a new list of the best free software available for Windows (that doesn't require shady methods to acquire :P)

Post some recommendations below :ok:

Anti-virus

* - Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition (http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/#!/free-antivirus-download) - Protect your PC against Viruses, Spyware, Rootkits, and Trojans. Lightweight AV security that uses a lot less RAM than most other free AV solutions.

* - MalwareBytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro) - Detect and quickly remove malicious threats to your computer. Updated daily (needs be manually updated) to find and clean almost malicious files and programs on your machine.

* - Avast (http://www.avast.com/en-eu/index) - (Free registration for Basic protection) With regular program and virus definitions updates (which a lot of people forget) it blocks viruses from your computer and warns you about them, whether they from Internet browser, USB or DVD. Great thing, never had any problems with viruses, despite visiting loads of dodgy sites. (recommended by Churky)

* - 2-Spyware (http://www.2-spyware.com/) - It gives you the option to set your own search engine and block all others that it finds. Also currently running a system scan finding plenty of Adware etc. ((recommended by Fodster)

Firewall

* - Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/security/es/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm) - Employ robust two-way firewall protection to stop hackers, spyware, bots, and other attacks.

Browser

* - Google Chrome (https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/) - Explore the Web using Google's super-fast browser. It lacks some of the fine-tuning you'll find in Firefox, but from the minimalist interface to support for future-Web tech like Native Client and HTML5, the browser is a must.

* - Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/) - Surf the Web comfortably, relying on speed, safety, and power of customization. The browser is competitively fast, sports a new minimalist look, and includes some excellently executed features.

* - Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/) - for Chinese Webkit browser (once an IE addon, now standalone browser, pretty cool) (recommended by Info0)

* - Waterfox (http://waterfoxproject.org/downloads/) - If you're on 64bit don't use Firefox use Waterfox, it's Mozilla's sister browser especially designed for 64bit operating systems. (recommended by Baz)

PC Care

* - Advanced System Care (http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html) - One-Click Free System tool for PC tune-up and maintenance. Registry repair. Less tools than before on the free package but Quick Care offers users a simple solution to keeping their PC in good shape.

* - CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER) - Clean up junk files and invalid Registry entries. Very straight forward to use. Make sure to untick the Cookies and Form options of your favoured browser or you will need to fill them in again.

* - Glary Utilities (http://www.glarysoft.com/) - download, install, run, pc already 20% healthier. Has file recovery and hard drive wiper too and unlike Advanced System Care, you don't need to install separate programs for the extra functions. Privacy sweep default deselected to stop you clearer all you're bookmarks, histories, forms by mistake

* - Ashampoo Optimizer (http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/3606/System_Utilities/Ashampoo-WinOptimizer-Free) - Ashampoo WinOptimizer personally, does a similar trick to Glary Utilities to make your machine run better (recommended by Baz)

Media Player

* - VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html) - Play audio and video files in real-time and streaming modes. Will play also any media file (even RealPlayer downloads)

* - Windows Media Player Classic (http://www.filehippo.com/download_media_player_classic/) - The best media player around and no need for codec packs . It runs all with it's own codecs . Pretty handy. (recommended by Info0)

E-Books

* - Calibre (http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pcsupport&cdn=compute&tm=12&f=00&su=p284.13.342.ip_&tt=12&bt=7&bts=7&zu=http%3A//calibre-ebook.com/)
- Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. (recommended by Fodster)

Photo/Image Editor

* - Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/) - Powerful Image Manipulating tool. Create and alter photos and graphics manually or via scripting.

* - Ifranview (http://www.irfanview.com/) - Image viewer and organizer. Replaces default Image and Fax Viewer in XP.(recommended by Info0)

* - GetPaint (http://www.getpaint.net/) - Amazing little program with tons of plugins available! (recommended by Info0)

* - Blender (http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/) - for 3D modelling and such (recommended by Info0)

Productivity

* -Libre Office (http://www.libreoffice.org/) - similar to Open Office and contains all the basic components of Windows suite (recommended by Info0)

Instant Messaging

* - Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/) -Talk with friends and family for free over the Internet. Also has a clean and neat, junk free IM space.

Downloaders

* - Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) (http://www.speedbit.com/) - Download and convert videos from YouTube or any video site; accelerate and manage your downloads

Archiving

* - IZArc (http://www.izarc.org/download.html) - Archive your files, search within archives, and find passwords for archives. Only lacking an 'Open when finished' to be the best imo.

* - 7zip (www.7zip.org) - opens all archives, a bit on the slow side, can't add files to unsupported archives (Rar you can extract, but can't add to same rar file ). (recommended by Info0)

* - PeaZip (http://peazip.com/) - free archive manager. Faster than WinRar or 7zip (recommended by Info0)

Support

* - TeamViewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx) - Team Viewer is an amazing little program if you want to use remote access to another machine of yours or to help a buddy out when your speaking like a nerd and he don't have a clue what you mean. (Recommended by Baz)

File Sharing/Management

* - Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/home) - Install software. Create account. Repeat on next machine. Sign in. Add files. Pick up on previous machine. Repeat. Also can be used to share specific folders with people using the invite options. Get 250mb extra for each new install. (recommended by Fodster)

Convertors

* - Miro Video Convertor (http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/) - Video to mp4 convertor (recommended by Mark)

* - Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) - Video formtat convertor (recommended by Info0)

It gives you the option to set your own search engine and block all others that it finds. Also currently running a system scan finding plenty of Adware etc, looks good so far :ok:

Currently on version 3.6.2

Getting better and better with each release and to be fair, I switched from MS Office completely to it! Missing nothing, so far :).

Advanced System Care 6.0 is out, looks pretty nifty.

Give it a few weeks before the 'upgrades' start removing it's effectiveness though, so keep the current version ;)

Advanced System Care was ace for me, even worth money to buy full version, but should be lifetime license with free upgrades. It's not like that, sadly.

So better solution for gamers, by gamers.

Give it a go. It's in Open Beta for all now.

Now tell me I don't give anything worthwhile around here ;).

Antivirus: AVG and Avast. I use them for years and they keep me safe so i trust them completely.

Antimalware: Malwarebytes, Spybot and SuperAntispyware are the best as far as i can tell. I use all three at the same time.

AntiRootkit: Although antiviruses implement scan for rootkits, i also use Tdsskiller from Kaspersky Lab. It’s just a tiny tool, not a whole suite, it updates itself and has saved me when a rootkit was forcing my pc to connect to a web radio station. I also created a torrent for this so i can help more people. Of course, it’s free.

Deleting/Unlocking: Use Unlocker to delete anything that refuses to just go from your system. This is my favourite utility, i highly recommend this.

Video Converter: AVS4YOU. It’s fast and efficient with a variety of input and outputs formats.

PC Care: Window Washer from Webroot cleans up my PC from useless junk, making it run faster.

Registry Cleaning: Regseeker works flawlessly for me for so many years. I wouldn't recommend it for windows 8 though, it had found over 6000 registry errors on my brother's laptop and it wasn't even over so i cancelled it, i didn't want to erase the entire registry! Maybe the design of 8 is cumbersome for regseeker to work, but in xp it's the best.

If you want it for free, just set it up on your own? It' not that hard :).

http://www.pcworld.com/article/210562/how_set_up_vpn_in_windows_7.html

For topic as no-one mentioned it yet, if you're converting videos from AVI to MP4 I can recommend 2 programs:

MeGUI - robust and novice people might have problems with using this, but learn and reap rewards (comes with great AVS Script creator).

Handbrake - awesome software, but has problems with some proprietary codecs (namely Edius ones :().

Both can be obtained @ http://www.videohelp.com (there are tons of other progz on that site for Video/Image stuff).
