    Match Ratings v Current Ability

I am sure this has been investigated exhaustively over the years but I am still trying to get my head around why players with significantly lower current ability ratings outperform superior (on paper) players in actual matches? I thought it would be because the lower rated player has a much higher potential ability but, as an example, I have a left back with CA 114 PA 122 who never scores less than 7 in a game (season average 7.51) who is keeping out a CA 145 PA 160 rated full back who averages 6.86. Is it due to the particular tactics settings or some 'hidden' attribute?

Are you comparing players with the same position and the same tactic? I assume the answer is yes. Then it might be their physical attributes or intrinsic values of their ca related attributes.
As you mention about ca/pa thing i recommend reading these entertaining threads.

If you have a guy that rates 7.51 and another that rates 6.86, why does it matter what their PA/CA/any attribute you fancy is. You play the guy that get the better rating.

CM Scout has frazzled too many peoples brains that they can't play the game with their own common sense any more.

I would normally just take the match ratings as the basis for who to play (or buy/sell) but I was so annoyed that the left back with crappy attributes was so much better than the guy with excellent looking numbers (that also cost me 3.5 million smackers) that I had to look up their CM Scout ratings. As another example I have a striker with CA 186 who scores 15 goals a season, partnered with a bloke with CA 122 who bangs in 25...it just makes no sense to me
