Shamrock Rovers confirmed the release of nine players from their playing squad on Wednesday. All the players had contracts that had finished at the end of the 2013 season and Hoops boss Trevor Croly had spoken to them in recent days to let them know their contracts would not be renewed for 2014.
Rovers supporters certainly seemed very disappointed at the loss of fans favourite Stephen Rice who announced his departure on Twitter on the eve of this official announcement. Rice had captained the team on a regular basis and was the longest serving player at the club. The 2012 club captain Ken Oman (31 years old) has also been released, along with fellow defenders David Elebert (27), Danny Ledwith (22) and Conor Powell (26). Tommy Stewart’s and James Chambers’ second spells at the club have also ended.
Two experienced players in Billy Dennehy and Conor McCormack released by Rovers will no doubt have rival managers searching for their contact details.
