    Feyenoord survives in Europe

With the European games apparently giving our players supernatural strength we managed to keep Man City at 0-0 in Manchester!
On the other hand this match did not matter anymore, of course.

So the next important thing was the draw for Phase Two of the Champions League.
And this is the impressive result:

With Juventus, Man Utd and Real Madrid as opponents we have one tough schedule ahead of us!

    More success for Feyenoord!

We managed to tie our home game against Man Utd (2-2) with a little bit of help from de Gea and from the ref.

Then, after the previous two disappointing league matches, we barely beat Willem II 1-0 (with a goal by Kozak).

And then it's Ajax in Amsterdam. Arguably the toughest game in the season.

Two goals by Jordy Clasie! Where would we be without him? But what's wrong with Kozak???

For some reason we seem to play better against strong opponents then against weak opponents.
What can we do about that?

    New problems for Feyenoord...

That was to be expected, of course.

And Clasie's reaction is normal so what can we do? As it is we're lucky to still have him.

But if we let him go then it's no telling who will be next. Possibly Sven van Beek:

    Mixed Results

With a hat-trick by Toornstra we beat AZ 5-2 in Rotterdam.

This was followed by a 2-1 loss at Juventus.
We played well but the loss was only to be expected, of course.

The good thing is, though, that we did beat FC VVV 3-0 after the loss against Juventus.
Geis scored two goals (!) and Kozak scored the other one.

That leaves just four more games before the long January break.

And we really cannot keep Clasie much longer....

    Feyenoord loses points

The last four games before the January break start at Heerenveen where we lose two points.

The next game, in Rotterdam, is against Emmen, who are fighting against relegation.
Thanks to our attacking midfielders we win that game without any difficulty.

But now we seem to be losing momentum and we are beaten by Vitesse Arnhem in our next home game!

And, finally, we lose two more points in our last game of the year, away at Heracles.

So that's just 5 points out of 4 games. Looks like our squad badly needs a break.
Particularly Kozak, who did not score a single league goal in December.

The good news is that we are still first in the league, no less than six points clear of Ajax Amsterdam who seem to be struggling as much as we do. In fact, it is actually the recent away win in Amsterdam (with Clasies two memorable goals) that accounts for the current six point difference!

    Feyenoord topscorers:
    Toornstra 11, Clasie 8, Vilhena 7, Immers 5, Geis and Kozak 4, El Ahmadi 3, Boetius 2

But there's some bad news coming very soon that will thoroughly spoil many people's holidays!

    Jordy Clasie leaves Feyenoord!

Of course it could not be avoided. Clasie had told us last year already that he wanted to leave if he would get an attractive offer and we had told him that he would be free to go then.

And it was clear that the time has come now. Clasies thoughts were obviously elsewhere all of December as he had not scored in any of our four games when the rumours started:

It would seem that virtually every major club in Europe is interested in Clasie!

In the end it is Inter who gets Clasie, albeit for less than we had hoped to get for him - quite a bit less, in fact, than what Liverpool had offered just recently.

So now we need to rely on Lex Immers and the young, but highly talented Balil Basacikoglu.

We could obviously try and buy an expensive new player to replace Clasie, but that would only make Basacikoglu unhappy.
Not too mention Immers, who has already been complaining that he gets to play so little while he scored 5 goals already.

Why didn't you keep him? (Assuming he's under contract and why care if he is unhappy?)

Clasie is too good for Feyenoord. He deserved a good contract with a European top team.
    It's realistic.
Besides, they paid us reasonably well for him.
And we care about how he feels at Feyenoord

AZ knock Feyenoord out of the Cup!

With Clasie left for Inter and with Toornstra's injury both Immers and Basacikoglu had a chance to play against AZ for the Dutch Cup.
In addition, El Ahmadi was on international duties for Morocco so the squad for the game against AZ looked like this:

Unfortunately Immers hardly had the chance to make the fans forget Clasie because he got injured in the game.
We are beginning to realise that the squad may lack depth.

Kozak again failed to score and fans are beginning to wonder why we bought him if he does not score more than Kazim-Richards did.

Impressive performance so far. Ronald Who ? It looks like you are building a team based on defensive strength rather than blitzing goals, which is probably why you do better against good teams (set up to counter attack). I like that you are being realistic with transfers and I hope that you can maintain that when things get tough.

    Feyenoord recovers

After the December dip and after just having been knocked out of the cup by AZ, the big question is:
Can Feyenoord get back on track and win the title? After all, we do still have that six point lead.

The first February game is away at FC Emmen, one of the weaker teams in the league.
We are still missing El Ahmadi; Toornstra is back from his injury better and stronger we trust, but Immers is injured so Basacikoglu will play again. And this time Kozak did score and was even announced the man-of-the-match!

And we go on to win the next game as well, at home against PEC Zwolle.
Not the most difficult opponent, but every win helps at this stage.
The red cards help, too, by the way!

Unfortunately, Ajax also won both of their games so the situation at the top of the table remains the same,
while Feyenoord faces Real Madrid in the Champions League twice. First at home and then we have to travel to Madrid!

    Feyenoord vs Real Madrid

In our third and fourth game in Phase Two of the Champions League we play Real Madrid, first at home.

And they teach us a football lesson in the first 45 minutes! But after that we manage to come back and even score a goal.
Of course it's not enough, but the fans don't complain.

The game against Real Madrid, however, was followed by a shocking loss at De Graafschap.
Obviously we are playing too many games right now for this young squad.

In the meantime Ajax takes advantage of the situation by beating Willem II (2-0) and getting three points closer.

And there is no time to think about it. We have to fly to Madrid for the return match against Real Madrid.
And we don't hardly want to play that game anymore. Although, for the youngsters it will be a fantastic experience.
But if it means losing more points in the league games and the title going to Amsterdam....

But... to everyone's surprise the game in Madrid turned out to be another shocker!
One that the fans are not likely to quickly forget.

Of course it's not enough to qualify for the Quarter Finals, but it's a game the fans will cherish for a long time.

Still, because of our lost game to De Graafschap and with Ajax beating Willem II we only have a three point lead in the league now.
And what's more, our next game is against Ajax Amsterdam and the week after that we will be facing PSV in Eindhoven!
These two games will be crucial!

Predictions anyone, for these two clashes?

    A) Feyenoord - Ajax
    B) PSV - Feyenoord

    Feyenoord 1 Ajax 1
    PSV 1 Feyenoord 2

That was one hell of a European group, so you did well to get 2 points. League title is going to go to the wire.

Still, our youngsters loved the experience and they are better players because of it, I'm sure.
And they'll fight like lions against Ajax and PSV. We always do well against strong teams.

    Thanks for your optimism
Actually, it's more likely that we'll win the first game and tie the next since that's an away game, but we'll see.

Those would be the results I hope for! That would give us a 6 point lead again after the Ajax game and at least a 4 point lead after the PSV game.

    Feyenoord and Ajax clash

With our heavy schedule and Ajax catching up slowly but surely, our home game against Ajax is crucial.
Nobody has forgotten the away match with Clasie's two wonderful goals, but of course Clasie is not playing for us anymore...

It's good that we have no injuries and nobody is banned for this match so we start the game with our regular squad.

And it's Immers, of all people who scores the first goal!
However, Ajax manages to equalise just 9 minutes later.

And so this crucial game ends in a draw.
Not good, but not bad either as we do keep our three points lead now.

The next match will be away against PSV Eindhoven. We could not have had a tougher opponent!
The supporters were optimistic but after this game against Ajax, the result of our game against PSV is even more crucial!

    Feyenoord and PSV clash

So just when we are playing two of the most crucial games of the season, another player tells us he wants to leave.

We will first try and talk with him and offer him a better contract.
He hasn't played for us nearly as long as Clasie had so perhaps we can convince him to stay on.

Meanwhile, the game in Eindhoven, like the one in Amsterdam against Ajax, is a major challenge for us. PSV won the title last year and even though they are having a disappointing season this year nobody can realistically hope to beat them in Eindhoven.

And yes, again we take the lead, and again our opponents score the equaliser.

And because Ajax beat Vitesse (3-2) we are now only one point ahead of them!

Will we still win the title? Or will it be another season like the three years with Koeman as coach?
Our supporters hate being the eternal runners-up, especially if it's Ajax who win the title!
