    [STORY] Feyenoord after Koeman

In 2011 Feyenoord hit rock bottom and ended in a miserable 10th position. Then Ronald Koeman came.

With Koeman as coach (2011-14) Feyenoord were runners-up in 2012, third in 2013, and runners-up again in 2014.

But the fans want more! After all, it's been 15 years since Feyenoord won the title, back in 1999.

But Koeman left for Southampton and what's more, he took Graziano Pelle with him!
So how will Feyenoord do without Koeman - and without Pelle?
Not to mention De Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi, the two key defenders who went to Lazio Roma and FC Porto.

So Feyenoord wisely approached Samsami who said he would try and make them the Dutch champions again.

And that is what this whole story is about. Can Feyenoord once more become the club that rules in the Netherlands? The club that wins league titles and Dutch cups? The club that is feared even by Ajax and PSV?

Perhaps Feyenoord can even achieve some success in Europe in the process. But first and foremost, can Feyenoord win Dutch trophies again???

Well, it's a two year plan. Or three. Rome wasn't built in a day, you know.

And not too many top players want to join Feyenoord, nor do we have much money, so let's first see what we've got:

Lots of talented youngsters there, at least.
There's Boetius and Vilhena, both attacking midfielders. And there's Kongolo and Van Beek, the two central defenders.
All of them play for the Holland under-21 team. So if we can keep them we have a good future ahead of us.

And we have experienced players: El Ahmadi, Toornstra, Clasie (wanted by all of Europe) and of course Kenneth Vermeer, the surprise goalie who came from rivals Ajax Amsterdam for just half a million pounds - and they did not like it one little bit!

Nelom (DL) is okay, too, but Wilkshire is getting on in age, so we shall have to be on the lookout for a new right defender.

And we have no decent striker! Colin Kazim-Richards is really an attacking midfielder and the only real alternative, Mitchell te Vrede, is not nearly good enough while Manu and Achabar are limited strikers, too.

Also, the squad lacks depth. We have Lex Immers if Boetius or Vilhena would disappoint us, but other than that it's only more youngsters with Bilal Basacikoglu as the most promising one.

So the first year will be a test year with two main goals: First of all to see how well they perform, and secondly, to see if they want to sign new contracts.

After that we will have to buy some new players: At least a striker and a right defender to replace Wilkshire.
And if Clasie does leave, we will have to replace him, too.

These four we cannot afford to lose. They all have contracts now, so let's hope they don't become unhappy and want to leave!

The first year the lads will have the chance to prove themselves. Nobody will be quickly replaced by new players.

And so far, so good. Although PSV is already getting too far ahead.

Kazim-Richards, who is on loan anyways, will have to be replaced. That much is already clear.
He cannot make the fans forget Graziano Pelle.

We are considering considering approaching Aston Villa for their Czech striker, Libor Kozak.

Van Beek and Kongolo, on the other hand, are managing well. They almost make us forget De Vrij and Martins Indi already.

Well, the amazing ride to the top of the world starts with the runway: Season One.

Then, and only then, the real excitement can begin, the take off: Season Two.

The question, of course, is: how high can we get?

Here's the end of the runway:

We got to the end of the runway in a rush, but hold on to your chairs as we're about to take off because from now on it will be one step at time!

And it better be good, because the fans are already grumbling and saying that we are the eternal runners up, always one step behind either Ajax Amsterdam or PSV Eindhoven.

The good news is, we have signed him! Libor Kozak!

He will replace Kazim-Richards who was suspended a lot and scored little. Most goals came from our midfielders.

The fans can finally look forward to goals again!

With a single-striker tactic this could indeed make a huge difference! how many goals have your AMC and MC's scored during season 1?

The first season we conceded fewer goals than any other team. But three teams scored more than we did.
And yes, most goals were scored by Toornstra, Vilhena and Clasie, all attacking midfielders.

And more good news! For next season we managed to sign Johannes Geis from Mainz.
An extremely talented young player, or so it would seem. They hated to lose him so he ended up costing us 7.25M!

As a D/DMRC he will immediately replace Wilkshire (DR) - our weakest link. In addition he can fill in for El Ahmadi (DM) when needed, as well as for either of our central defenders. So he should play in virtually any match this season!

All in all we spent 14.5M for Kovak and Geis and we are now ready for season #2.

Here's the squad, then, for season #2:

Nobody left the club after last season, except Kazim-Richards and Te Vrede, both of our strikers, so we only have Kozak as striker now, but Vilhena can fill in for him when needed since we had a special training program for him last season!

We even managed to keep Clasie somehow!

    The Take-Off

After a friendly against Sparta Rotterdam (2-0 with goals, remarkably, by Kozak and Geis) we received bad news:
We will be facing Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League Qualifying Leg 3. That could hardly have been worse!
Their star player, Brazilian forward Hulk, earns 300.000 a month!

Our fans are still talking about how last season was simply 'more of the same' with a good enough result but no prizes. Being the runners up doesn't feel good to them anymore. Second best for a team of Feyenoord's reputation is simply not good enough. It's been 15 years since we last won the title, etc. etc.

Hopefully Kozak will come through for us in St.Petersburg - and in the return in Rotterdam!

A sensational game in St. Petersburg!

Not Clasie (our star player), not Kozak (our new striker), not Geis, but El Ahmadi was the Man-of-the-Match!

And all of that after the early red card for Vilhena! El Ahmadi scored in the 49th minute!

What a start of the season!!!

    A real chance to qualify!

But us that what you want if going for league?

    Extra money though I guess?

Do you not have enough players to fill the bench?!

Well, the bench is filled with mediocre players but for now we're enjoying the success.
    Maybe naive, but who cares!

The first league match of the season at home against De Graafschap is an easy one, although Boetius is injured and Immers has to take his place.

We beat De Graafschap 3-0 with goals by Toornstra (2) and El Ahmadi.

This was immediately followed by an away-win against Vitesse Arnhem: 0-2 with goals by Immers and, yet again, El Ahmadi.

That's 6 points in the bag.

No goals by Kozak yet, but both he and Geis are performing well enough.

So now it's getting ready for the return match against Zenit!

    Feyenoord qualifies for the CL!

    We did it!!!

And once more El Ahmadi scored while Bilal Basacikoglu (subsititute for Vilhena who was suspended after his red card in St. Petersburg) scored the other goal. Geis was the Man-of-the-Match.

We will now be facing Toulouse, Man City and Galatasary. At least that means money!
And we might have a chance against Toulouse and Galatasaray.

Of course what the fans really want is the title but for now they are more than happy.
In fact, Koeman never succeeded in making Feyenoord qualify for the CL so it feels really good!

    Initial unexpected and huge success

We have really taken off now!

In the Premier League we beat Heracles 6-0 and then PEC Zwolle 0-2 (with Kozak finally scoring a goal). And we won five games more without conceding a single goal yet. This is totally incredible and unheard of!

And it doesn't stop there! In Europe we beat Toulouse in France and next we beat both Man City and Galatasay in Rotterdam, albeit by the skin of our teeth.

For now, at least, nobody talks about Koeman anymore!

Of course we know very well that this cannot last, but none of the fans seem to realise that.

    The First Signs of Trouble

Thinking that we were invincible we went to Turkey only to be beaten 2-1 by Galatasary (their first win).

Not to worry, we still have 9 points out of four games, but next thing we tied our Premier League game at FC Utrecht 2-2 where they scored in the very last minute and where we conceded our first two goals of the season.

This was followed by an impressive 3-0 win against Toulouse at home, but followed by a very disappointing 2-1 loss at FC Dordrecht. A game that we should have won without any problem.

So is our busy schedule beginning to demand its toll?
