Could've told me that a year ago.

As I've mentioned before, I have made some changes - a few nation names, league names, WC hosts, like. Nothing major like any league swaps though, at least not in this one. I did do a separate copy of everything when I was futzing around with the S Korea > NZ league swap.

But that said I'm backing things up obsessively.

Ya could have started this thread a year ago

Make sure to keep a few copies of the .exe so. Avoid the dreaded 5809 error

I suppose I could have, but I didn't really want to say anything until I had something reasonably concrete to show, as opposed to just talking about pure vapourware.

Yeah I have a couple backups of the exe.

    What is the 5809 error?

Data mismatch. Happens when the exe doesn't match the data.

So just for fun, now that I got most of the 1. Bundesliga players entered into the DB, I decided to start a game up just to see who gets named to the World Cup squads. So I chose Finland as the active league with max database, and so here I'm gonna list the squads of those WC-qualified countries that are completely entered into the DB (minus perhaps a few players playing in leagues in countries whose names start with G (other than Germany) through Z).

-- Real-World 2015 Women's World Cup Rosters vs Womens Game DB 2012 World Cup Rosters --

Players listed in bold are on the in-game squad; listed in italics are players who are in the in-game squad but weren't on the RW squad; players marked with a ! are not yet in the database.

Verdict - 10/23. Reasonable swaps, but reminded me that I need to raise the league standard for the Australian league (and, incidentally, lower it significantly for some other countries, like Italy and Spain, and raise it for yet others, like Norway, Sweden and Denmark).

Verdict - 12/23 (2 not yet in DB). Okay, but could be better - several big players playing in the US were overlooked in favour of lesser players playing in France and Germany, which reminded me I need to raise the league standard for the US. As much as this affected Canada's NT roster, it was even worse for the US...

Verdict - 15/23. Pretty decent, not gonna complain about this. Pretty sure that Shirley Cruz, if uninjured, would've been on the team, though kinda puzzled as to why Karla Villalobos was left out. But overall this looks good.

Verdict - 11/23 (1 not yet in DB). Not bad, but not ideal. Mostly decent substitutions, but some omissions are glaring, especially Angerer - she is the best German goalie in the DB. But contracted to Portland Thorns, so probably overlooked because of the low league rep for the USA. Now that I've changed that, hopefully that will change the next time I start a game up.

Verdict - 8/23. This was the biggest annoyance, because so many players were left out in favour of worse players, simply because the better ones were playing in the US and the worse ones somewhere in Germany or France or England. Well. I've since upped the US' league standard to 18 (so, equal to Germany and France), so hopefully next time I start a game, we'll have a more accurate squad.

So initially I just did this for fun and because I was bored of entering staff, but I'm really glad now that I did it, as it helped me realise things that need to be addressed. Hopefully the changes I mention above will do the trick.

League Rep will help but club rep is key.

If the clubs in US are all around 10-12 and you are giving the players at those clubs CR or 100-120, HR will be brought down to match CR. So a player with HR180 and CR120 will have HR120 in game. This doesn't happen to players playing abroad so a player with HR and CR130 abroad will be more likely in the national team that anyone playing in the US that has a CR of 125 since with the reduction, the max those players HR will be 125 (or whatever their CR).

So if the US clubs were all 16-18 and the player CR were mostly 160-180 (not all players, just national side), their HR wouldn't drop to a level were its lower than those abroad. You could just raise the player CR's to match the HR but problem there is a player with CR*Club Rep+10 or more going to want to leave the club more often than not e.g. CR135 at Club Rep 12

Also, and I got no explanation to this, don't use the call-ups when the game loads as a guide, wait until the first game. That's when the best squad based on HR gets called up generally. before then players appear to slightly random more often than not. The game also calls up players to fill certain positions so for instance if it wants 3 DR's in a squad, it wont include a DRL (D20 R15 L20) as a DR but a DL

Okay, I'll adjust the club reps and see what that does.

For the most part, though, I've gone simple for the time being, and everyone has the same value for HR, CR and WR.

Lastly, for the squads I listed above, I waited until the first game of the World Cup before checking the rosters out.

So for the playable leagues we have:

Argentina - 237: Roster info is surprisingly difficult to come by, and only a few D1 teams have full rosters (Boca, River, UAI Urquiza). Not really enough there to make it worth playing in this league unless your main objective is just to play in CONMEBOL club comps.

Australia - 380: All but a few extra teams I had to add to the top league have full rosters, so this is playable.

    Belgium - 761: Easily playable.

Brazil - 760: All top division teams but one have full rosters, so plenty playable.

Croatia - 382: Info from here is pretty difficult to gather, too, but there are enough players in here to make it possible to play this league if you stick to D1. You'll have to do a lot of squad/depth building, though...

    Denmark - 614: Easily playable.

England - 2114: Easily playable Prem/D1/D2/D3, down at Conference level rosters are spotty, some teams are full, some are empty, but still playable.

Finland - 438: Easily playable if you stick to the Naisten Liga (top division).

France - 1645: Easily playable at any level.

Germany - 1752: Easily playable. Some Regionalliga clubs are spotty.

Greece - 63: Not playable - could only find roster info for 2 clubs.

Another of the (RW) 2015 World Cup participants is done, so here's a comparison as before, for Holland.

Players listed in bold are on the in-game squad; listed in italics are players who are in the in-game squad but weren't on the RW squad; players marked with a ! are not yet in the database.

    G Loes Geurts !
    G Sari van Veenendaal
    G Angela Christ
    G Jennifer Martens
    D Stefanie van der Gragt
D Mandy van den Berg !
    D Petra Hogewoning
    D Dyanne Bito
    D Dominique Janssen
D Maran van Erp (on B team in game)
    D Marije Brummel
    D Kitty Susan
    D Nathalja Nijman
    D Kika van Es
    M Desiree van Lunteren
    M Sherida Spitse !
    M Daniëlle van de Donk
    M Lieke Martens !
    M Anouk Hoogendijk
    M Merel van Dongen !
    M Tessel Middag
    M Jill Roord
    M Vanity Lewerissa
    M Manon van den Boogaard
    M Jolijn Heuvels
    M Eshley Bakker
    F Anouk Dekker
    F Manon Melis !
    F Vivianne Miedema
F Kirsten van de Ven !
F Shanice van de Sanden (on u21 squad in game)
    F Silvia Smit
    F Jackie Groenen
    F Chantal de Ridder

Verdict: 11/23 (6 not yet in DB). Pretty alright, I think, considering how many aren't in the DB yet, and the substitutions are pretty decent.

Holland - 475: Playable, though I'd stick to the top division myself.

Ireland - 283: Playable, 11 of the 12 Premier League clubs have staff.

Italy - 1452: Easily playable in Serie A and B; Serie C1A is good, C1B is spotty. C2A/B/C is mostly empty.

I'm going to eventually look at doing league swaps for the playable leagues that don't have enough staff to be playable. Austria and Iceland are so far probable candidates.

    Thanks Dermo!

With the info from there, Ireland is now at 283 staff, all but one of the 12 Premier league teams have players, so it should be more playable now.

Very impressive work Rapinoe - This'll still be fun to play without the realistic league structures, especially with the amount of players been added here... I'm not sure if it works or not but if you change the first and second names in the database then surely 'women' will also be able to appear as regens?

After finishing inputting all the staff into the Nadeshiko League, I started up another test game to see how the WC rosters match up in game vs Real World. Test game, as in all previous cases, had Finland selected, and vacationed until the start of the World Cup, rosters looked at the day of the first match. Ivory Coast and Japan are the two newly-completed sides.

Players listed in bold are on the in-game squad; listed in italics are players who are in the in-game squad but weren't on the RW squad; players marked with a ! are not yet in the database.

    IVORY COAST
    G Lydie Saki
    G Dominique Thiamale
    G Cynthia Djohore
    D Fatou Coulibaly
    D Djelika Coulibaly
    D Nina Kpaho
    D Mariam Diakite
    D Fernande Tchetche
    D Sophie Aguie
    D Raymonde Kacou
    D Deborah Nogbou
    D Rachelle Bracchi
    D Chacoum Coutouan
    M Rita Akaffou
    M Ida Guehai
    M Christine Lohoues
    M Binta Diakite !
    M Jessica Aby
    M Aminata Haidara
    M Sebe Coulibaly
    M Oura Agnes Kouame
    F Nadege Essoh
    F Ines Nrehy !
    F Sandrine Niamien
    F Ange N'Guessan
    F Rebecca Elloh
    F Josee Nahi !
    F Nadege Cisse

16/23 (3 not yet in DB) - I'm happy with this. Once the missing three are added to the DB and with a few tweaks on a couple of important players (Akaffou, Haidara), should be pretty perfect.

    JAPAN
    G Ayumi Kaihori
    G Erina Yamane
    G Miho Fukumoto
    D Aya Sameshima
    D Azusa Iwashimizu
    D Kana Kitahara
    D Megumi Kamionobe
    D Saki Kumagai
    D Saori Ariyoshi (in U21 squad in-game)
    D Yukari Kinga
    D Yuri Kawamura
    D Ayano Dozono
    D Yuka Kado
    D Natsuki Kishikawa
    D Ruka Norimatsu
    D Yurie Obara
    D Kana Osafune
    M Asano Nagasato
    M Asuna Tanaka
    M Aya Miyama
    M Homare Sawa
    M Kozue Ando
    M Mizuho Sakaguchi
    M Nahomi Kawasumi
    M Rumi Utsugi
    Emi Nakajima
    F Mana Iwabuchi
    F Shinobu Ohno
    F Yuika Sugasawa
    F Yuki Ogimi
    F Mami Yamaguchi

14/23 - pretty good actually, the substitutions are good/understandable, though a few players I'll need to tweak to get them in.

Since I was there already, ran through the World Cup to see what happens... here's some notable things:

    QFs:
    Australia - France 1:2 (Khamis 73; Le Sommer 21, 57)
    Finland - Canada 1:2 (Auvinen 50; Tancredi 2, Scott 75)
    Brazil - Holland 3:2 (Tamires 45, Grazielle 79, Gabi Zanotti 83; Smit 5, Miedema 36)
    Colombia - England 0:2 (Aluko 25, White 88)

    SF:
France - Canada 1:1 (Savin 48; Kyle 30), France win on penalties
    Brazil - England 0:3 (White 21, 57, Aluko 64)

    3P:
    Brazil - Canada 0:1 (Andrews 6)

    Final:
England - France 1:1 (Kirby 90; Le Sommer 77), France win on penalties.

So some surprises sure like Germany's and USA's early exits, but that *is* football, isn't it... still looking pretty reasonable though, to me. There are things that turn up that are bugging me, but on the whole, I'm pretty happy with how things are looking so far! I'm really looking forward to getting all the players/staff inputted to get some proper test games played!

I went through and changed Every. Single. First name in the DB to female names suitable for each country -wherever possible, I looked at lists of most common names by country, and did it like that.

And I went through last names, too, for the languages that have different forms for male and female - so Cechova instead of Cech, Kasparaite instead of Kasparaitis, Zhukova instead of Zhukov, etc. I also went through each to make the romanisation of names from languages written in different alphabets be consistent.

And, once I'm done inputting the staff, I'm going to tackle the language thing. I've already got the match events done so that it has "she/her" instead of "he/him/his". Next step will be to figure out how to change that in the rest of the game.

    Ouch.

Pretty sure the Empty DB I created had 0 first and second names in it too. Did you use the older variation of the Empty DB where the staff still existed?

Yeah, I did. But I don't mind because this way the names kinda are weighted more towards names that are actually common, and in many cases adds more possible names for regens than would otherwise be the case.

Indeed that can be an issue in some of the smaller nations. The game runs out of first and second names and uses random names from different nations

So now that everything from Macau to North Korea, and the Norwegian Toppserien are done, here are the next three World Cup squad comparisons, RL vs in-game. As before - bold means on both RL and in-game squads, regular text means on RL squad but not on in-game squad, and italics means on in-game squad but not RL squad.

    NEW ZEALAND

    G Erin Nayler
    G Rebecca Rolls
    G Cushla Lichtwark
    G Jess Reddaway
    D Meikayla Moore
    D Ria Percival
    D Abby Erceg
    D Anna Green
    D Rebekah Stott
    D Ali Riley !
    D Jessie Wharepouri
    D Bridgette Armstrong
    M Katie Bowen
    M Katie Duncan (nee Hoyle)
    M Betsy Hassett
    M Kirsty Yallop !
    M Annalie Longo
M Evie Millynn (U21 in game)
    M Daisy Cleverley
    M Rebecca Burrows
    M Emma Proctor
    M Hayley Bowden
    M Katie Rood
    F Rosie White
    F Amber Hearn
    F Sarah Gregorius
    F Hannah Wilkinson
    F Emma Kete
    F Jasmine Pereira
    F Sarah Jane McLaughlin

Verdict: 15/23 - this is pretty good! A couple (Pereira and Cleverley) were probably left out for being really young, two because they're not in the DB yet... I'm actually fairly satisfied with this as-is - the substitutions are actually reasonable.

    NIGERIA

    G Ibubeleye Whyte
    G Precious Dede (injured)
    G Christy Ohiaeriaku
    Rachel Ayegba
    Marbel Egwuenu
    D Blessing Edoho

M Halimatu Ayinde (U21 in game)
    M Cecilia Nku (was injured)
    M Efioanwan Ekpo
    M Esther Edem
    M Seun Odeniyi
    M Uchechi Sunday
    F Perpetua Nkwocha !
    F Asisat Oshoala

    F Esther Sunday
    F Desire Oparanozie
    F Soo Adekwagh
    [i]F Chichi Igbo{/i]
    F Cynthia Uwak

Verdict: 10/23, 3 not yet in DB. Not very happy with this... but not entirely sure what to do about it, since most of the players left out are younger players... well we'll see. I might lower the reps of some of the replacements.

Verdict: 11/23 - not awful because the substitutions are almost all perfectly understandable - older, more experienced players.

And ran through the World Cup again... group stage surprises, Australia tanked, finished 4th. Brazil only managed draws against Norway, Japan and Scotland (!), so finished 3rd. China finished 3rd in a tough group behind France and Holland (so reasonable, as a Dutch surprise). Sweden (much like RL) underperformed, finishing 4th in a reasonably difficult group with Colombia, Switzerland and Mexico. England were poised to finish 2nd in their group behind New Zealand but a surprising late-goal loss against Ukraine in the last match, together with NZ and Costa Rica playing to 0:0, let Las Ticas slip into 2nd. Of the teams that made it to the second round, only two (Switzerland and Spain) haven't yet been fully added to the DB.

    2nd round:
    Germany - Japan 1:0 (Laudehr 8' pen)
    USA - Holland 5:1 (Morgan 9', 77', Press 25', 57', McDonald 47'; Janssen 2')
    Canada - Costa Rica 2:0 (Julien 22', Kyle 36')
    North Korea - Switzerland 1:0 (Ri Un-suk 41')
    France - Italy 1:2 (Houara 84'; Camporese 33', Panico 54')
    Norway - Spain 1:0 (Tuxen 17')
    New Zealand - Iceland 0:1 (K. Omarsdottir 5')
Colombia - Finland 1:1 (Ingrid Vidal 15'; Angie Clavijo og 32') Colombia 12:11 on penalties (!!)

    QF:
    North Korea - Canada 0:3 (Sesselman 2', 77', Busque 38')
    Germany - USA 0:1 (O'Reilly 20')
    Colombia - Iceland 0:1 (O. Vidarsdottir 10')
    Norway - Italy 2:0 (Hegerberg 11', Haavi 89')

    SF
    USA - Canada 2:0 (Press 63', McDonald 71')
    Norway - Iceland 1:0 (Hetland Akerhaugen 22')

    3P
    Iceland - Canada 1:2 (T. Einarsdottir 77'; Julien 20', Kyle 47')

    F
    USA - Norway 2:1 (Rodriguez 59', O'Reilly 63'; Herlovsen 20')

Yknow, keeping in mind that football often surprises... not unreasonable! I'd say Italy's upset of France in the first round opened the way for Norway's run to the final.

Australia - 383: All but a few extra teams I had to add to the top league have full rosters, so this is playable.

    Belgium - 767: Easily playable.

Brazil - 770: All top division teams but one have full rosters, so plenty playable.

Croatia - 383: Info from here is pretty difficult to gather, too, but there are enough players in here to make it possible to play this league if you stick to D1. You'll have to do a lot of squad/depth building, though...

    Denmark - 620: Easily playable.

England - 2130: Easily playable Prem/D1/D2/D3, down at Conference level rosters are spotty, some teams are full, some are empty, but still playable.

Finland - 441: Easily playable if you stick to the Naisten Liga (top division).

France - 1653: Easily playable at any level.

Germany - 1760: Easily playable. Some Regionalliga clubs are spotty.

Greece - 63: Not playable - could only find roster info for 2 clubs.

Holland - 481: Playable, though I'd stick to the top division myself.

Ireland - 285: Playable, 11 of the 12 Premier League clubs have staff.

Italy - 1455: Easily playable in Serie A and B; Serie C1A is good, C1B is spotty. C2A/B/C is mostly empty.

Japan - 884: Easily playable since only the 1st and 2nd levels (Nadeshiko League and Challenge League) are playable.

    N. Ireland - 236: Rosters are incomplete-ish but probably playable. This is one of the leagues I've got shortlisted for swapping out.

Norway - 734: Certainly playable, though there are a couple teams in the playable divisions that have no players. But it *is* playable, I actually played a season through over the past couple of days (my first full season-long test!)

So I started playing a test game, with England as the main league, Australia, France, Germany and Japan selected as background leagues. My plan is to play 5 seasons and see how things go, taking notes on things to tweak.

First season done, and I don't think it could have finished any tighter - even the goal differential between us and Liverpool was the same:

The rest of the top table was pretty reasonable though I think Leeds did better than I'd expected. But it played out pretty alright in England. France and Germany were a bit more surprising, Lyon 2nd and PSG 5th despite being the two strongest sides in France; in Germany 1. FFC Frankfurt were 2nd, Wolfsburg 6th despite them being the two strongest in the Bundesliga. Biggest surprise though was Juvisy being relegated. Japan had a couple surprises too, with NTV Beleza finishing only 6th and Elfen Saitama and Kobe Leonessa (!!!) being relegated - will definitely need some adjustments made there with their 'depth players'.

World Cup squads were reasonable taking into consideration various players' performances in the active and background leagues, but still there were a few significant surprises, like NZ not including Amber Hearn (6.92 over 39 games with 8th-placed USV Jena) and Ria Percival (6.86 over 43 games with Jena), and North Korea passing on Song Kyong-un (6.46, 3g 2a over 41 games with my Arsenal)...

    And then there were these:

FIFA World Player of the Year:
    1. Kara Lang (CAN/Lyon) - 36gp 4g 1a 7.22
    2. Elodie Thomis (FRA/Lyon) - 47gp 16g 6a 7.02
    3. Eugenie Le Sommer (FRA/Lyon) - 37gp 11g 4a 7.11

How did this get chosen? Lyon finished second in French D1, and lost to Montpellier in the semi-final of the Champions League (Montpellier won that over PSG, who beat my Arsenal in the other semi).

    World Footballer of the Year:
    1. Christine Sinclair (CAN/Portland Thorns) - 26gp 14g 11a 7.23
    2. Abby Wambach (USA/Western NY Flash) - 25gp 14g 6a 7.20
    3. Alex Morgan (USA/Portland Thorns) - 22gp 9g 8a 7.27

How did this get picked? How was, say, Kara Lang not amongst these three? Megan Rapinoe had 26gp 4g 10a 7.12 with Seattle Reign...

I don't quite understand how those worked, but the European awards confused me even more:

    European Footballer of the Year:
    1. Kerstin Garefrekes (GER/Frankfurt) - 41gp 13g 11a 7.29
    2. Turid Knaak (GER/Arsenal) - 46(2)gp 18g 7a 7.38
    3. Lina Magull (GER/Wolfsburg) - 25(3)gp 12g 1a 7.18

Why Knaak or Magull and not, say, Fara Williams (ENG/Liverpool - 61gp 12g 20a 7.16), or Kara Lang? And if you're gonna pick one from my team, why Knaak and not Caroline Weir (SCO) - 38(7)gp 9g 12a 7.64, or Taome Oliver (ENG) - 31(4)gp 11g 6a 7.86??

    European Goalkeeper of the Year:
    1. Desiree Schumann (GER/Frankfurt) - 51gp 49c 7.43
    2. Merle Frohms (GER/Wolfsburg) - 39gp 24c 7.15
    3. Sara Bouhaddi (FRA/Lyon) - 47gp 32c 7.26

    So why is say, Siobhan Chamberlain (ENG/Arsenal - 23(1)gp 14c 7.46) left out? Or Erin Nayler (NZL/Arsenal - 38gp 28c 7.37)?

    European Defender of the Year:
    1. Alexandra Popp (GER/Wolfsburg) - 50gp 2g 5a 7.28
    2. Kathrin Hendrich (GER/Frankfurt) - 32gp 1g 2a 7.06
    3. Marith Priessen (GER/Frankfurt) - 34gp 0g 3a 6.97

    Why no Lucy Bronze (ENG/Liverpool 60(1)gp 1g 5a 7.11)? Or Megan Campbell (IRL/Liverpool 48gp 4g 4a 7.29)? Or Corine Petit (FRA/Lyon 47(1)gp 2g 2a 7.13)? Or Laure Boulleau (FRA/PSG 40gp 0g 3a 7.22)?

    European Midfielder of the Year:
    1. Garefrekes, 2 Knaak, 3 Magull

Could make a list of "why nots" here, too.

    European Striker of the Year:
    1. Simone Laudehr (GER/Frankfurt) - 43(3) gp 6g 0a 7.15
    2. Kenza Dali (FRA/PSG) - 38gp 6g 3a 7.03
    3. Celia Sasic (GER/Frankfurt) - 41gp 15g 7a 7.34

Nevermind the fair list of "why nots" I could make here, too (Christie Murray (SCO/Arsenal 47(1)gp 13g 6a 7.52), Karen Carney (ENG/Birmingham 45(2)gp 16g 5a 7.26) etc etc)... of the three above how did Sasic not win it?

Why, with two exceptions, is every single player of German nationality, and why, with three exceptions, are they all players from the Bundesliga (and one of those three exceptions is of German nationality)?
