Ade Pennock has masterminded four wins over CM Vipers
"New kit, Gaffer? exclaimed ajvonkrondor.
"Yep, the home kit last year didn't go down too well with the supporters so we've decided to use our away kits as our home kits for this year." replied The Gaffer.
"Sweet. What are we wearing as our away kit?" said Fodster.
"You'll have to wait and see, lads!" said the Vipers boss.
The squad were gathered in the dressing room at the www.champman0102.co.uk Stadium, fondly known as the Snake Pit by the supporters of the Vipers. Of the 24 man squad, five were missing as vinjwoods, merkezekrem, ZanSnake, Bevchenko and batman were nowhere to be seen.
Of the 19 that had actually turned up, one wouldn't be able to play after pulling up injured on that very morning of the first friendly. loyal_royal1 had strained his calf which was horrendously bad luck for someone who was looking to make an instant impression in midfield. It looked as though the new signing would be out for a month which rules him out of all the four pre-season friendlies and possibly up to three league matches.
Nevertheless, loyal_royal1 took up a place in the dugout as The Gaffer invited him to remain involved in the squad. There were two other new signings in the squad and one took up a spot on the bench as well as Robaldo1 was named on the bench while the lucky man to start straight away was Shermaldo on the right wing given that ZanSnake was missing.
The Gaffer had explained his pre-season selection policy this time last year. For the first fixture at least, he selects a team of those who had attended training the most last season. If two players had the same amount of training appearances then he picks those who started more games last season. That isn't a policy that he stands by in every game, as every Vipers player knew but just to get the ball rolling in pre-season. Everyone would get a full 90 minutes in each game. For example, should Robaldo1 make an appearance in the next match, he will get a full 90 minutes as Jesus will be put on the bench.
Either way, it is imperative that all players turn up to every game to be considered for selection. It will also contribute towards bonus points at the end of the season when each player is able to improve on their own abilities.
As ever, the Vipers lined up in The Gaffer's favoured 4-5-1 formation with emphasis on wing play. For those who are not familiar with the formation:
The squad certainly had a familiar look to it, especially in defence as Goofy ushers in a defence of trunky, ebfatz, Dermotron and BobMem with Dermotron named as captain. Midfield consisted of gazzas1uk playing behind Jesus and Fodster leading the line. The midfield was an area that did look unfamiliar as Shermaldo started on the right with Liam playing for the first time as a left winger. Ex-left winger Redknapp69 starts in the middle behind Fodster.
In some ways, it made sense to go with the strongest line-up possible. After losing each of the four games that the Vipers had played against Forest Green, the Gaffer was desperate to register a first win over them, even if it was only a friendly!
7 - It's a positive start for the Vipers as BobMem gets Shermaldo involved early in the game. The new signing chests down a long ball before playing it to the feet of Jesus. Spotting Redknapp69 free in the area, Jesus lobs the ball in but Redknapp69's right footed volley goes flying over the bar.
8 - The Vipers are on the attack again as best of friends Fodster finds Liam on the left who then passes it to Redknapp69 in the area. Redknapp69 does well to turn on the ball and sets up Fodster for a shot that goes high and wide.
11 - There's more superb play by the Vipers as Redknapp69 holds up the ball before passing back to Jesus. It's then played forward to Fodster who swivels on the ball before putting it wide of the goal.
18 - Shermaldo gets on the ball and turns nicely in the middle of the pitch before hitting the ball ahead to Fodster. The striker takes a touch before rifling in a shot that bounces back off the crossbar. It's collected by Redknapp69 who finds Fodster but his drive is tipped wide by Steve Arnold.
19 - The corner is delivered into the box by Jesus and BobMem gets on it, squaring it to Fodster but he loses out to Corby Moore.
20 - Redknapp69 pounces on a loose ball and chips it into the box where Shermaldo meets it with a header but Arnold parries it. Danny Coles gets it and clears it from danger.
21 - Forest Green finally work up their first shot as Elliott Frear plays the ball to Jon Parkin and his lobbed ball left is headed at goal by Christian Jolley but Goofy is alert to catch the ball.
22 - The Vipers maintain possession for a while with passing that starts with Goofy and includes Jesus, BobMem, Shermaldo, Redknapp69, Liam, Dermotron, trunky, ebfatz and Fodster with the latter heading down a ball from ebfatz for Redknapp69 to blast at goal but Arnold turns it behind. The corner is given straight to Sam Wedgbury by Jesus and cleared from danger.
30 - The Vipers win a corner and it's aimed to the near post by Jesus with Fodster getting above Luke Oliver to win the ball but his header goes well over the bar.
31 - Arnold takes the goal kick and it's headed on by Redknapp69. gazzas1uk latches on to it and sends it into the area where Fodster takes on Oliver, gets away from him and blasts the ball into the top corner to put the Vipers ahead!
35 - Another headed ball on, this time by gazzas1uk, is collected by Jesus who hits it towards Shermaldo. The winger's volley is well held by Arnold.
37 - Redknapp69 gets on the ball just outside the Forest Green area and hits it towards ebfatz. ebfatz crosses low and hard and it's connected with a left foot by Redknapp69 who sends it inches wide of the goal.
41 - Jolley takes on BobMem but is pushed to the ground. A free-kick is award which David Pipe passes down the wing. Frear takes it upfield before lifting into the area for Jolley. Dermotron tries to intercept but is unable to control it and Jolley takes it and shoots only for Goofy to divert it wide with his fingertips.
It's been a decent half for the Vipers as they blew away the cobwebs and got straight on the attack. Redknapp69 is hugely involved and Shermaldo looks to have settled in nicely with Fodster hitting the goalscoring trail straight away. Forest Green have managed to muster up a couple of chances but Goofy has been alert to the danger both times. There are some tired looking legs out there but as The Gaffer is determined to give everyone a full 90 minutes of action with the hope of rotating the team in the next friendly, there won't be any changes.
47 - It's Forest Green who come out attacking first as a Jolley ball into the box is volleyed by Parkin to which Goofy can only parry it before Dermotron picks it up and plays it out of the area to Redknapp69. The converted central attacking midfielder waits for support before playing it to ebfatz and they twice exchange passes before it's given to Jesus. It's then knocked on to Fodster who lobs it left to Liam but it goes out of play.
49 - Redknapp69 touches the ball on to Jesus who chips it on to Fodster. The striker swivels on it before crossing into the box where Redknapp69 puts it clean over the bar.
52 - Fresh legs enter the game for the visitors as Moore, Coles and Oliver are replaced by Aarran Racine, Tom Bender and James Marwood.
53 - Forest Green concede a second goal as Jesus turns Pipe on the ball before squaring to Redknapp69. He shoots at goal and Arnold saves it but couldn't hold on to it. Redknapp69 acts quickly to pounce on the rebound and makes it 2:0!
57 - More changes for Forest Green as Dale Bennett, Jolley and Wedgbury are taken off and replaced by Kurtis Guthrie, James Norwood and Clovis Kamdjo.
69 - A loose ball hits Bender and Redknapp69 gets possession before playing the ball into the area for Shermaldo who loses his man but sees his shot cannon back off the crossbar.
70 - gazzas1uk collects the loose ball and plays it into the box for Fodster who tries a pot-shot but it hits Norwood.
71 - The game is over for Kamdjo already as he is replaced by Charlie Clough after just 14 minutes.
82 - Racine looks to have left a high foot on Redknapp69 in the area but the referee turns down the appeal for a penalty!
86 - Redknapp69 on the ball once more and he chips it to BobMem who puts his foot on the ball before returning it to Redknapp69. It's then sent into the area where ebfatz times his run well to head at goal but puts it inches wide.
It's been a thoroughly professional performance by the Vipers as all 11 starting players made a good impression on The Gaffer. Redknapp69 was certainly one of the stars on the pitch but the man of the match award goes to Jesus who kept things ticking over in the middle of the pitch. Special mention too for Shermaldo who looks to have integrated himself into the side nicely with Liam working hard in a new role on the left wing.

Friendly #2 - Lincoln v CM Vipers
"That was a cracking performance against Forest Green lads, well done. Now let's focus on the next game which is five days away at Lincoln. Now these are another team that managed to beat us last year when we lost 2:1 at their place. Our record over four games isn't that bad though, two wins and two defeats overall. Hopefully we'll get a good turnout for this game as I want to play those who didn't feature against Forest Green. It's a good chance for you now to show what you can do and outperform those who you are competing against in the same position. Let's get a good turnout!" That had been the words of The Gaffer as he spoke to the players in the dressing room.
The Gaffer had certainly been impressed with a few individuals so others have got to step up to the plate when they get a chance. He certainly hoped that they wouldn't forget to attend training in order to do so! One player wasn't going to feature after a blow of a calf strain but he hoped loyal_royal1 would still show his face in order to earn a training point. batman had been another player to suffer an injury during pre-season but hadn't shown up at the training ground anyhow. Hopefully he would now make an appearance given that it was likely that he'd make a full recovery in time for the trip to Lincoln.
Meanwhile, the Vipers have been drawn into the League Cup for the very first time in their history given that they are now a Football League outfit. They will play away in the 1st Round in August which will be against Morecambe at the Globe Arena.
