The tone was set early on by the Vipers as evesham sent a furious shot over the bar but Southend showed why they were hoping to catch up to the Vipers in responding with a goal in their first attempt. After Deegan had jinked his way past gazzas1uk, he was able to lift the ball into the box towards Cassidy in the area and the striker showed his prowess in beating Goofy to the ball with a header, an astonishing 37th goal in only 35 starts this season for Southend.
But there is a reason why the Vipers are top of the league and they emphasised that point as evesham was able to take control of a ball that had been lost by Deegan, lifting it into he box where AJ took just one touch before firing it into the net. It was only evesham's 2nd assist of the season but it was one that delighted The Gaffer given that the Vipers had missed the creativity of Jesus in that position in recent times.
The equaliser handed the momentum back to the Vipers, seeing Paul Smith save an effort from AJ while Papalzru tried an outrageous lob that went well over the bar.
Unfortunately, disaster struck shortly before half-time as Weston found his way into the penalty area and Goofy, trying to close the player down, clipped his feet, sending him tumbling. The referee had no choice but to award a penalty which was converted by Timlin.
Half-time followed after evesham had been pulled back by Deegan, who picked up a yellow card as a result. Unfortunately, Bevchenko wasn't able to take advantage of the free-kick, sending it straight into the wall as the whistle blew.
The second half began quietly before The Gaffer made a change 11 minutes in, taking off Bevchenko and sending Redknapp69 on in his place. As Janis89 was spotted warming up in readiness to come on, batman and Baz worked well together down the left before the latter chipped the ball into the box. Redknapp69 was able to bring it down before laying it off to AJ who had no trouble in smashing the ball into the net with all his might. It was an immediate impact for Redknapp69 who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, returning to the squad after a recent injury. The assist was also his 10th of the season.
As expected, Janis89 came on to replace AJ, offering fresh legs up top while Southend did likewise in sending Bridge on for Timlin. Before long, a third and final change was made for the Vipers as batman was replaced by pyromyst although he swapped positions with Redknapp69 due to the latter's experience on the left wing.
Perhaps those changed killed the game a little bit as there wasn't much to note from the final 20 minutes. Southend did come close to getting a goal but felixsjo did well to cut out a cross intended for Prosser. His controlled ball out of defence had been picked up by Redknapp69 who was taken out by Thompson. pyromyst stood over the ball with clear intention of taking it himself but soon had his hands on his head after his effort struck the bar and went out of play!
As the final whistle blew, The Gaffer considered the result to be a positive one for the Vipers as they maintained their 11 point lead over Southend who have a game in hand to play.
