Good win at West Brom, looked set to win even before their red card.
After promotion we only had 10M to spend on transfers. I mean, what is this???

Man City prove too strong for Rovers

On Saturday 26th November we played Manchester City in front of a faithful crowd of 32,835.

City only scored once but it was enough for them to win at Ewood Park. It did not make our fans stop celebrating, though. They feel that we are doing well with the squad we have and they are right, of course. The problem is that too many of them expect us to 'do a Leicester' next year, or at least the year after. But for now we have their unwavering support, as well as that of the Board.

Agüero scored his 13th goal of the season for City and we have Steele to thank for the fact that the score-line did not change after that opening goal. We, on the other hand, had only one single shot on goal in the entire match. So the result was fair enough and if it had not been for Steele and Flanagan the score would at least have tripled.

Steele was named Man-of-the-Match, but once more we received too many yellow cards. As the season drags on we will get injuries no doubt and suspensions and the lack of squad depth will pose a real problem for us then.
    Spoiler!

We dropped one place, but there's still a two-point gap between us and the relegation zone.

Our next opponent will be Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. If there's one lesson we are learning these days it is that every game is a tough game in the Premier League...

    Spoiler!

    Very good!

It's the social media. After the trashing of Arsenal our fans talk about nothing but doing a Leicester. The fact that we are in danger of relegation now only makes them believe in it more, because that's exactly what happened to Leicester as well, the year before they won the title.

Could have been worse bar from Steele's magnificent performance but these are not the games that will define your season

No idea why the fans would be expecting a Leicester - still a lot of squad depth esp in Mid/Str needed IMO

Point would be nice to come back from South Wales from - good luck (not that I mean it for the next game )

    Disappointing performance in Wales

On Saturday 3rd December we played Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, full of hope, but the match turned into a major disappointment. In fact, we played our worst game of the season so far and the Swans had an easy afternoon.

Perhaps it was Bradley's quick opener that did it. He played the ball past Aké and blasted it towards the top corner. Steele didn't move and we were 1-0 down with just six minutes on the clock.

Be that as it may, our whole team had an off-day, even Steele. The second goal was typical. Fer sent the ball over from the left, Bradley simply out jumped Steele and scored with a fine header!

And Steele wasn't the only one who had an off-day. Even Flanagan and Marshall clearly under-performed. This was one of those days in a football season that you better quickly forget. After all, we shall have to move on and do better next time.

James Lowe was the only one who played a decent game to-day.
    Spoiler!

The result of all this is that we dropped to 17th position on the table and things are starting to look a little less positive.

In fact, even the Board are beginning to get concerned and from their statement after the match, which still sounded positive enough, it could be construed that they are reluctant to try and find money for the signing of any new players in the upcoming January transfer window.

    The Gunners' revenge

Four days later, on Wednesday 7th December 2016 we played Arsenal in the EFL Cup 4th Round in front of a crowd of 16,499. Now the Gunners had obviously not forgotten how we had trashed them in the League (4-0) and they made sure that this would not happen again!

We played well enough. In fact, our lads fought like lions, but in the end they were left empty-handed when Tolisso scored the clinching goal in the final minutes of the match.

And it started so well for us with Lens scoring after just 11 minutes (his 6th goal in 18 appearances) and the crowd were already preparing to enjoy another battering of Arsenal by our lads when Welbeck cancelled out Lens' opener with a superb header.

And frankly, Arsenal were the better team this time, but we never gave up hope until Tolisso scored two minutes into injury time. A bit of a damper for us, but perhaps it's only for the best as the Premier League has now very much become our priority of course.

At least we played considerably better than on Saturday. But Arsenal were simply not going to let us beat them twice in one season.
    Spoiler!

So December did not start well for us and we have a tough schedule ahead of us with another six(!) League games before the January transfer window begins. And then there will probably not be any money available to sign new players. We may have to try and loan one or two central midfielders instead. With Shenton leaving, in the second half of the season lack of squad depth will become an increasing problem for us.

Meanwhile, the next match is one that we simply cannot afford to lose! It's another six-pointer.

Dissapointing to lose, but these things happen. That is not a bad run of games to come with 3 6 pointers in the next 5 games. There should be points available in all of them, so if you could get 9 or 10 from the next 5 games it will make a huge difference. Even 6 would put you half way to the magic 40 points.

A lovely win for the Super Swans - Just an all round bad day at the office

Harsh last min goal in the cup

Yep - squad depth is a killer for you - how bad are the finances if board mentioned it?

On average - how much are you making/losing per month - you must be avergaing best part of 18-20k attendance per game and you cannot have that man big earners?

Nice set of fixtures coming up - think you need to pick up some points from those otherwise will be a very long season ahead

The situation is not too drastic, I don't think, but we did have some players sign new contracts this year.
Wages (monthly wages in spoiler) are not extreme, either.

    Wow - £2m in debt!

Do you have "normal finances" on as £50k for Ake seems huge as does the wages for Bennet/Lowe/Williams/Henley?

I am not sure what tools there are for finances - I simply use Aussie $ (which is about 2.5 x GBP price in 01/02) which then sort of gives a more "real life" wages level (e.g top top players on 200k per week)

They are normal (monthly) wages and it's still nothing compared to what Newcastle pay their players. And they got promoted when we did!

There are some steep wages there which doesn't seem right. No wonder you're in debt, this is CM 01/02, finances shouldn't be like they are today so paying £50K at a club like Blackburn and just promoted from the Championship is a bit extreme imo. Got a bad feeling that you'll struggle to keep things going financially now.

I must admit that I have never seen wages that high. I also notice that you are paying a wage to Shenton. If you offer 0% on a loan, it doesn't make any difference to whether they will accept or not. only £400, but every bit helps.

Just noticed that these are monthly. I normally use weekly, so divide by 4 and it starts to look better.

Ah - if they are monthly wages then looks fine but if Ake on 50k per WEEK that's a different case!

Yes, sorry if that created confusion. At least it got the discussion going
I still wonder, though, how Newcastle can pay 240K per month to David Luiz and 150K per month to Rooney and 70K-90K p/m to some other players and not go bankrupt.

Red cards affect relegation six-pointer at Ewood Park

On Saturday 10th December we played Sunderland in front of a crowd of 30,720 - in what could be seen as the first of three relegation six-pointers this month.

Now because Shenton has not been playing too well and is leaving the club in January, we decided to try something new so we had Aké play as central midfielder alongside Jason Lowe. This meant that Akpan was back as defensive central midfielder, just like last season.

And both players seemed more than happy in their respective roles; they played well enough, but at the end of the day the game was affected more by red cards than by who played or didn't play.

It was a match which we needed to win and we went all out for it, but goals don't come easily and as so often happens, when we didn't score, our opponents did. With 35 minutes on the clock Koné scored his very first goal of the season. Why on earth did that have to happen at Ewood Park, though?

However, seven minutes later Koné could already go for an early shower when he was sent off by the ref because of his dangerous, two-footed challenge on Wisdom. And suddenly things brightened up at Ewood Park when just before half-time Lens found the net with a fierce shot!

The crowd realised we had a real chance now and indeed, we played well in the second half. There were some decent scoring chances for our midfielders and a few scoring opportunities for Lens as well and it seemed only a matter of time before we would score that deciding goal when Mulgrew (who had just come on to replace the tired Jon Flanagan) tripped Wilson and was immediately sent off for his professional foul!

And so the game ended undecided as neither team found the net in the remaining 13 minutes or so. Both teams were clearly exhausted and with ten men it seemed a draw was inevitable.

We played well and we had the chances to-day but we failed to find the net in the second half against ten men. Flanagan was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

Fortunately for us, Derby County lost their match as they were crushed by Liverpool (6-2) so the gap with them actually widened because of our draw, but nevertheless this very much was a missed opportunity for us.

Having said that, there are still two relegation six-pointers remaining this month.

    Spoiler!

Nobody had a particularly bad game, it was just that the chances didn't quite fall right and nobody stepped up to grab the game.

That might be a chance missed and it puts presure on the Watford and Southampton games.

Oof, bad luck with the red card. Definitely a game you would have liked to win at home. Draw's better than a defeat though!

Missed that it was monthly wages too. I use the default weekly wages so it makes sense now

    Steele injured

    LATEST NEWS

Jason Steele will be out of action for more than a week with a bruised thigh! This means he will certainly miss our next three matches. Tomorrow we will play West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Fair play - great crowd there getting behind you

Unlucky on not getting the winner there - looks like you did all you could with a man advantage for a while but didn't pay off

Is the backup keeper any good?

I think luckily for you there seems to be worse teams in the division and you'll do enough to stay up - it does seem a tough task to improve squad strength with lack of cash but you'll always get quality players from other clubs unhappy that can maybe get loaned or leave on a cut price fee

David Raya is a more than decent goalkeeper. He just hasn't had game time, yet.
