Not a bad draw - could be a lot better but home is always nice

Steele sent off as Rovers lose to Premier League leaders

On Sunday 22nd January we played Man Utd, the current Premier League leaders, in front of a record-breaking crowd of 34,362 who did all they could to cheer our lads on.

Because both Henley and Wisdom are injured, Nyambe started out as right defender and Aké as central defender. This means that Grimes replaced Aké as central midfielder alongside Jason Lowe. And for almost an hour we managed to keep Man Utd from scoring.

And who knows how the game would have ended if Steele had not been sent off..

In the first half, Steele, Marshall and Lens were our best players. Man Utd created twice as many chances as we did but we played well and held our own. But then Steele clipped the feet of Shaw in the area and that moment decided the match. We brought on Raya for Lens, Mkhitaryan sent Raya the wrong way to score from the spot and there was nothing we could do after that.

We did bring on Cani for Lowe, and he played well enough, but what can you do with ten men against the Premier League leaders? Mkhitaryan had to go off injured so they brought on Rashford, but injuries hardly worry our opponents and it was Rashford himself who scored the clinching goal for Man Utd.

Steele was in fact our best player to-day. Without Steele and with just ten men for over half an hour we lost grip of the match and we should consider ourselves lucky that they only scored twice.
    Spoiler!

We are still not in danger of relegation, but we can certainly use of few more wins at this stage!

    Spoiler!

With Steele banned Raya will get to play again, first in the FA Cup and then also in our next two League matches.

Menawhile, Man Utd seems to be well on track to win the title with Arsenal losing to Chelsea (2-1) at Stamford Bridge, although the season is still very long of course.
    Spoiler!

But for us it's Middlesbrough in the FA Cup next!

Not a great cup draw, neither a big team nor a minnow to thrash, but atleast it is at home.

That Southampton game could be crucial. Now 10 points clear of relegation, there is a degree of safety and you are now just 5 wins away from the magic 40 points.

Yeah, it's very odd, after three home draws in relegation six-pointers in December we finally beat Saints away from home. That was clearly a six-pointer. But we're not there yet.

Oof, tough enough without getting a red card and giving a penalty away. Hope Steele has been fined

A big chance for Raya to impress now.

The first hour should give you confidence that you can live with anyone at home. Steele will be a loss, but if the defense play as they have been, then you can go into every match looking to get something. The bottom 3 look to be awful and not getting any better.

You ain't gonna need 40 points this year. 30 will be enough with the pile of dross below you

A blow to lose the keeper in a game where was always tough to get anything

"We had them by the throat.."

On Saturday 28th January we played Middlesbrough in the FA Cup 4th Round in front of a small but loud crowd of 17,963.

And we had them by the throat and we were fully convinced that we were about to advance to the 5th Round - but we let them off the hook...

It started so well with Matt Grimes (on loan from Swansea) scoring his first goal ever for Rovers! Initially, the wall deflected the shot after a free-kick by Marshall but Grimes collected the ball and drove it in low and found the net!

And in the second half, when Marshall himself had doubled the score with his fifth goal of the season, we decided on a double substitution and we brought on Cani (to give him some game time) for Grimes and Mulgrew for Bennett, who had received a yellow card.

Now the question will always be, where did it go wrong? Middlesbrough had not produced a single shot on goal yet and after this double substitution we clearly remained the better team, but nevertheless Adam Forshaw scored with their first attempt at goal and although that in itself was not a disaster, with two minutes remaining De Roon scored the shock equaliser with their second attempt on goal!!

Raya was certainly not the one to blame. Perhaps it was a mistake to have replaced Grimes by Cani, but even so, we should have won the match!
    Spoiler!

And there is not much rest for us, either. We have to play four matches in the first eleven days of February, including the FA Cup replay, which will be an away game now, of course.

On the one hand, it seems we can now slowly start moving up the ladder. On the other hand, the relegation zone is still not far enough behind us. Our next match is therefore crucial!

Another good showing from Grimes, could be a legend in the making at this rate. He's definitely surprising me, didn't think he'd be good enough at this level.

    Guwon the Grimes!

Ugh - replay isn't ideal for fixture congestions - shame you didn't see that game through

I'm afraid somebody will show up with a bag of money and buy him before we have any money to put in a bid!

But with the transfer window, at least you know you have him until the end of the season.

    Big game next.

That's true. But if he plays too well he'll draw attention to himself! And we might want him!

I've got a feeling that you'll have eyes on other targets when you do get some money!

Depends how much money is available. That's why it's key to get as far up the table as possible.
No relegation fears now I don't think so time to grind out some results and move up that ladder.

We got little or no money for all our trouble last year (promotion after play-offs) so the more csh we will get this year, the better, as long as the Board don't get in to their silly heads to expand the stadium or install undersoil heating or something!
