    Cracking free signing there

Good cup win - useful for game time for Chirivella and hopefully Bilal can improve given Marshall's injury

The formation is working so I wouldn't go changing it.

It depends on how you want to use Chals. I'm not sure he will cut it as a starting central defender, but fine as a backup.
If you want to start both Chals and Besic, can Besic move into central midfield ?

I knew Kingsley would point out that Chalobah is to be used as a DMC

    Good freebie though, good business.

Excellent performance in the FA Cup and very wise to keep Besic fit!

Well, it's nice to have options at least! And of course Chirivella is on loan until 1st May only. So we need a midfielder for the final games in May!

    Disappointing stalemate at Portman Road

After a week of much-needed rest, on Saturday 13th January we played Ipswich Town at Portman Road - so with rested players, but still without Nyambe, Henley, Marshall and Lens, who are all injured.

And although we were the better team, we were held to a disappointing goalless draw by our stubborn opponents.

We played a decent game, but there was something vital lacking. Perhaps it was Marshall's passion and relentlessness? Bilal certainly could not make us forget Marshall! Or perhaps is was Lens' killer instinct? Lens often scores goals when we need them most.

In the second half Chalobah replaced Wisdom and he did well, especially considering the fact that he lacks match practice, but we scored no goals. And with Marshall and Lens injured we simply had no attacking options.

So in a way we failed as a team, be we sorely missed Lens. Zeqiri plays well enough but he is only a 19-year-old kid and no-one can expect him to deliver consistently at this level.
    Spoiler!

So this was yet another disappointing draw for us. It's been a while since we won a Premier League match!

But at least we kept a clean sheet again. And we have a home game coming up against Reading. And with a little bit of luck Lens will be back from his injury just in time for this match!

    Spoiler!

    More transfer news

We signed yet another player on a free transfer! Victor Claesson is a very useful attacking midfielder/forward who can replace either Grimes or Chirivella, when needed. This gives us even more squad depth. And, just like Bilal and Chalobah he joined on a free transfer, unlike Chirivella and Zeqiri who are on loan.

    Spoiler!

Looks like you did all you could and unlucky not to take the 3 points

Top looks a pipe dream and close now from you down to 12th. Top half finish would be superb for you IMO

Good signing - as you say adds squad depth

Claesson is a very familiar name, but I have no idea why. I must have signed him for someone at sometime.

Disappointing point to drop. Need to recover that form and score some goals or you might slip out of the european places altogether. I'm starting to think that if Zeqiri is the answer, I'd rather not know what the question is.

Not too bad a signing there, squad filler for free. It'll do!

Two points dropped there for sure. Bilal living up to AJ's expectations right now.

Rovers demolish Reading as Lens returns from injury

On Sunday 20th January we played Reading in front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd of 32,423.

Both Lens and Nyambe were back from their injury and what a difference it made! Nyambe has been out for a full month but, after a shaky start, he made it clear that he still is our best central defender, while Lens played brilliantly after his three-week absence and as a bonus he confidently scored from the spot!

The return of Nyambe and Lens seemed to affect the whole team. Grimes and Chirivella played better than they have been lately. Even the early opener by Lee Chung-Yong, who nutmegged Nyambe and drove the ball in low and found the net, never caused our lads to panic; nor did it affect Nyambe too much as he recovered quickly and we set things straight very quickly and very efficiently to the utmost delight of the crowd!

First Aké scored the equaliser after Bilal (yes, Bilal!) had crossed the ball from the right. Next Chirivella scored his first goal for the club after Lens had headed the ball and Vickers had deflected it clear, leaving Chirivella with a simple finish. And when Gunter jumped unfairly with Bennett we were awarded a penalty and Lens stepped up confidently and sent Vickers the wrong way to score. And finally Grimes also joined the party when he scored his tenth goal of the season!

In the less eventful second half we gave both Chalobah and Claesson game time. Claesson especially played well, but somehow there were no further goals. Not that this mattered to anybody in the crowd.

A fantastic team effort! Grimes was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

So finally we win a Premier League match again and we did it in style! Our last win dated from 23rd December when we beat West Brom (3-1) at Ewood Park.

We are now back in 6th position in the Premier League table, but with the likes of Man City, Everton and Liverpool all closely chasing us anything can still happen this season.

And our schedule looks quite challenging!

    Spoiler!

But for now we can focus on the FA Cup first as we play Watford at Vicarage Road next.

Rovers advance to FA Cup 5th Round

On Saturday 27th January we played Watford at Vicarage Road in the FA Cup 4th Round. Marshall was back from his injury so this only leaves Henley who will be out for just one more week with a twisted knee.

And as usual we gave some players rest and we also used this match to give some of the new players game time. Perhaps we made too many chances as the goals did not come easily, but in the end they did come and so we knocked Watford out of the FA Cup and advanced to the 5th Round.

The first half was uneventful although we were the better team and we created a couple of decent scoring opportunities, but there were no goals. Watford defended well and fanatically and they did pick up lots of yellow cards in the process.

We started the second half with Claesson for Grimes (which made very little difference) and with Akpan for Besic, who had also been shown a yellow card in the first half. It did not have an immediate effect, but eventually it was Bennett who picked up the ball after a long pass by Flanagan who played the ball into the area. Bennett looked certain to score but initially Szczesny managed to push the ball away. However, Bennett was quick to score in the rebound!

And that did it. Barely a minute later Jordi Amat sent Marshall to the floor with a hard tackle. Lens stepped up confidently and scored the penalty!

And as icing on the cake, in the final match minute Bennett tried a volley and Szczesny saved the ball, but it fell to Aké who simply score our third goal!

A good game for most of our new players. Bennett was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

And after the match we drew none other than Man City in the FA Cup 5th Round! A huge challenge, but at least it will be a home game for us.

And just before the January transfer window closed we sold one last youth player, this time to Sheffield Wednesday. John Askew has never broken through into the first team. He was a decent youth player but never much more than that.

We have a week of rest now and then we play Stoke City at the Brittannia Stadium.

A couple of good wins there and with a home tie, a reasonable chance to make the quarter final.
What a difference it makes having your 1st team regulars players back from injury, although it is good to see that Grimes is not a machine and can have an off day !

Two excellent wins! Great to see Lens and Nyambe back, definitely made a big difference after a bit of a lull in performances beforehand.

Still on course for a UEFA Cup place in my opinion!

Unlucky stalemate at the Britannia Stadium

On Saturday 3rd February we played Stoke City at the Brittannia Stadium and although everyone was fit and available for this match and we started with the best possible line-up, the game still ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw.

Two moments decided this match. Two decisions by the referee. The first one was when Lens scored with a header in the very first minute after a superb pass by Bennett. It seemed a valid goal, but it was ruled out because Lens was supposed to have been offside. And the referee may just have been right there.

Then, just after the break when Claesson had been brought on to replace Grimes, Chirivella hit the ball towards Claesson in the area and our attacking midfielder got above MacArthur to win the ball and scored with a header, but again it was ruled out because Claesson had supposedly strayed fractionally offside, although this time none of us shared the referee's opinion.

So another goalless draw was the end result. Not quite what we had been hoping for.

Grimes was very unhappy at being substituted again, but Cleasson played well and his goal would of course have been the decider.
    Spoiler!

There were too many yellow cards and Klavan will be banned for two matches now that he has collected ten of them! This means that Chalobah will get more game time as defender.

And he will immediately be put to the test as we have to play Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea next!

    Spoiler!

Still a bit of a gap to Liverpool and the rest, but you do need to find some form before you are caught up in midtable mediocrity. 5th is still a realistic target

    Rovers upset ten-men Arsenal

On Wednesday 7th February we played Arsenal, one of the title candidates, in front of a crowd of 32,952 who were more than delighted when Leno was sent off and Lens scored from the spot and we went on to defeat one of the Big Six for the first time this season!

Arsenal seemed keen to get the early goal but our defence, and especially Chalobah, played extremely well and Arsenal created precious few chances. And neither did we, actually. Until that 38th minute when Chirivella was fouled in the penalty area going past Leno! Much to the delight of the crowd the referee reached into his pocket and pulled out a red card for Leno! Cech was brought on to replace the unfortunate goalkeeper, but Lens made no mistake scoring the penalty!

Arsenal had to finish the game with ten men now, and perhaps it could still have been a close game, even against ten men, but two minutes later it was all decided. Marshall put the ball into the six yard box and Chirivella headed it superbly and doubled our lead!!

So Chirivella more or less single-handedly ensured that the second half was merely a formality - at least until the 89th minute. That's when Besic made a decent enough tackle but was shown a yellow card which made him lose his temper. Besic was held back by his teammates as he protested vehemently to the referee who did not hesitate but showed him his second yellow card!!

But at least we won the match. Chalobah definitely passed the test as central defender and Chirivella was extremely important again. Marshall was named Man-of-the-Match for the fifth time this season.
    Spoiler!

An unexpected win. We had only beaten supposedly 'weaker' teams so far. But the red card and penalty made all the difference to-day.

    Spoiler!

Now Besic has been banned for no less than three matches. We did appeal to their decision, of course, but whether or not that will make any difference..? We also gave Besic an official warning. He may have been right, in fact he was right, but you don't do these kind of things when you are two goals up and with just two minutes remaining!

    Spoiler!

Great win! Very fortunate to have their GK sent off.

Chalobah back into DMC with Besic banned then?
