Rovers' good run continues at Old Trafford

On Saturday 10th February we played Man Utd at Old Trafford. Man Utd were the runners-up last year and this year the title race is between them and Chelsea and Arsenal. But we are at the top of our form and luck is on our side again!

With Besic banned for three matches and Akpan away on international duty, we had Chalobah start out as defensive central midfielder and that was not a bad choice. It's his favourite position and even though he was happy to play as defender and performing very well in that role, he must have been secretly happy to play as defensive midfielder again.

The match did not start well for us, though. Within ten minutes Man Utd had already scored and it seemed like this could become a very long afternoon for us. But Man Utd were relaxed about the job and they took their foot off the gas a little so that at half-time the score line was still the same (1-0).

In the second half we produced some shots on goal but we never managed to strike any fear into our opponents and the game began to peter out when Lens decided to try a long shot. De Gea pushed the ball away rather than holding on to it so that Bennett suddenly got the chance to pick the ball up and score the shock equaliser!

We quickly brought on Claeson for the exhausted Pedro Chirivella and with Chalobah continuing to play superbly we held our powerful opponents to an unexpected 1-1 draw!

Chalobah and Bennett were brilliant, but Grimes was struggling again and Lens was virtually invisible. We did get a bit more than we deserved, perhaps, but then again it helped that Man Utd's attacking line had an absolute off-day.
    Spoiler!

So three days after beating Arsenal this was yet another unexpected positive result. If we can keep it up, this might become a memorable season for the club! However, there are still eleven important Premier League games remaining.

    Spoiler!

And then Grimes picked up an injury in training so he will be out for three weeks or so. Grimes has had a dip in form lately so some might say that this does not come at a bad time. Claesson will definitely get a chance to prove himself now.

Anyhow, we shall be playing Man City next at Ewood Park in the FA Cup 5th Round and we would seem to be ready for it! City have a world class team but their horrendous schedule has been detrimental to them this season as their position in the Premier League table shows.

Spurs can definately be caught, especially if you can pick up points like that. Be great if you can upset City.

No surpise to me that Chalz had a good game

Rovers edge City in five-goal FA Cup thriller

On Saturday 17th February we played Man City in the FA Cup 5th Round in front of a remarkably large crowd of 29,419 who demanded nothing less than that our good run would continue. And they got what they wanted!

And it wasn't only about the number of goals scored today, but also about who scored them. Just like last week at Old Trafford we conceded an early goal but once again we bounced back with a lot of confidence. Marshall crossed the ball low and hard from the right and Lens scored with a fierce strike!

And it was none other than Chirivella who scored our second goal by rifling in a half-volley, but just before half-time Man City scored again to cancel out that goal.

With several chances missed by both teams in the second half it was beginning to look very much like a replay would be needed when Marshall got another cross in from the right to the far post and this time it was Claesson who headed the ball and scored the deciding goal!! He most certainly grabbed his chance with Grimes injured!

Our midfield was superb today! Claesson and Chirivella played together as if they have done so for years, but it is Marshall who was named Man-of-the-Match because of his relentlessness and his two assists.
    Spoiler!

So our exceptional good run continues and we made it to the FA Cup Quarter Finals! And not a bad draw for us, either.

    Spoiler!

But it's Everton we shall have to play next and every point seems important at this stage.

What a win! Claessen with an impressive showing, how's he settling in?

After that, you've got to be one of the favourites to win the trophy but I see Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs have gone through too. So to get Reading is certainly the luck of the draw Plus Man Utd or Arseal set to go out next time!

Great result and a real oportunity to get a semi final.

Grimes form before the injury might make it difficult to get back in the starting 11

If it weren't for AJ I might consider leaving Grimes on the bench, yes. On the other hand, this was only one game.

    Everton end Rovers' unbeaten run

On Saturday 24th February we played Everton in front of a crowd of 32,975 who were as optimistic as ever but you can't win them all and after our recent impressive unbeaten run we know again how it feels to lose a game. We had almost forgotten!

Although Besic is still banned and Grimes is still injured we knew we could rely on Chalobah and Claesson who did fantastically replacing them in the FA Cup match against Man City. However, our entire team seemed lacklustre compared to their fantastic efforts against Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City. It's so easy to think we can beat anyone after three of those impressive performances, but the truth is that we can just as easily lose to any club in the Premier League!

Nothing much happened in the first half apart from Henley barging Lukaku in the back and Ramselaar nearly scoring the free-kick, but the score-line at half-time did not seem to worry the crowd. But then Ramselaar did score the opener for Everton and that changed everything.

We did all we could to try and score the equaliser of course, but it only gave Everton the space to counter-attack, which they did superbly and it was Lukaku who finally doubled the score for them.

The truth is, we simply did not deserve to win to-day. Claesson was invisible but his teammates hardly did any better.
    Spoiler!

This loss means that we have dropped to seventh place again. Still, a far better position than any of us had expected at the beginning of this second season in the Premier League!

And we won only 12 games. But our goals scored and conceded (40-28) look so much better than last year (34-38 at the end of the season after 38 games).

Disappointing loss at home, but I guess it had to happen as you have been probably overachieving. 5th is still looking on.

Rovers defeat Palace as Cabaye is sent off

On Sunday 4th March we played Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and after the early opening goal by Lens and a red card for Cabaye we returned home cheerfully with three points in the bag!

Once more it was Marshall who provided the assist but this time it was Lens who scored the goal which was sufficient to win the match, especially with the red card for Cabaye in the second half which he received for clattering Lens.

So as it turned out it was quite an easy victory for us because the early opener seemed to make our opponents feel that this was a lost game for them and they appeared to give up hope already. They never got into the game and after the red card it was all over. In fact, we didn't even have to play all that well to win to-day.

All in all, a well-deserved win. Marshall and Lens were our best players, but Claesson was invisible again.
    Spoiler!

We are in a solid seventh position with only Everton breathing in our necks right now.

    Spoiler!

But it's time to focus on the FA Cup again as we play Reading at the Madejski Stadium next!

Solid away win. Is it me, or are Swansea starting to come back towards you ? Maybe too late but we can only dream

Rovers and Reading need replay in FA Cup Quarter Final

On Saturday 10th March we played Reading at the Madejski Stadium in the FA Cup Quarter Final and although it initially looked like it would be an easy afternoon for us, The Royals almost became a banana skin in our quest for a place in the FA Cup Semi Finals, exactly like one pundit had already predicted.

Claesson scored his second goal for the club with a fine header (both of his goals were scored in cup matches) with the assist coming from Marshall again. Soon after that opener Bennett doubled the score, also with a header, with the assist coming from Aké. And it was that second goal which seemed to give us false security.

Deep into the second half Reading clawed one back when Novakovich scored, but it was still no cause for real concern, until Fabio passed the ball into the area and Bennett clumsily clattered Semedo. Bennett was sent off for his professional foul and Wieser confidently began his run-up and nestled the ball into the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy!

Truth is, we really do miss Besic. Chalobah plays well enough, but it's just not the same as having Besic as defensive midfielder. We miss his creativity and his superb passing.
    Spoiler!

Ours is not the only game that will need a replay, though. The season is nearly over and tension is quickly mounting on all fronts.

    Spoiler!

With Bennett banned for three matches Bilal will get another chance as left winger.

Meanwhile, Marshall has just set a remarkable new club record with his Man-of-the-Match award to-day! Not only has he passed the test of Premier League football after our promotion, he also became our team captain and now he has personally set a new club record!

But life goes on and we shall be playing West Ham United next. An interesting match in the battle for 6th position in the Premier League table - and Besic will be back from his suspension just in time for this match!

You'll take them back at Ewood.
Disappointing to surrender a 2 goal lead, but every chance to progress to the semi final. Better have your tailor start the fitting for the Wembley suit.

Agree with the above - unfortunate not to see the game off and as long as no complacency kicks in - should be an easy progress

Stoke defeating Spurs would be nice for a S/F match
