Fekir decides thriller for Rovers against Derby County

After the international break, on Sunday 9th September we played Derby County at the iPro Stadium, still without Besic.

The match remained interesting until the very end and with 88 minutes on the clock it was our striker who decided the 5-goal thriller with his second goal of the day!

Because Besic is still injured we had Chalobah start as defensive midfielder. Martins Indi, who is lacking match practice, started out on the bench.

Now Derby started defensively and after Clasie had already performed an overhead kick, but missed by a mile, our central midfielder took the ball forward and passed along the floor for Marshall to pick it up in the area. Forsyth intercepted, but couldn't control the ball and the loose ball was picked up by Chirivella who hit it high and hard towards goal and scored the opener, more or less in Grimes-style!

We remained the slightly better team and just before the break Clasie passed left to Flanagan who sent the ball into the area in front of Fekir. Fekir had plenty of space and he calmly finished a great team move to score his first goal ever for Blackburn!

So things looked rather good for us only the second half had barely started when Vydra hit a fierce shot and found the back of the net! And the next minute Nyambe was shown a yellow card. So in order not to lose control of the match we brought off Nyambe and we brought on Martins Indi who made his debut as central defender. Weiman then took the corner; he floated the ball over into the area where Will Hughes won the aerial challenge against Clasie (who is, after all, only 5 ft 7 in) and scored the equaliser!!

Now things could have gone awfully wrong at this stage but somehow we recovered. Even so, Vydra almost spoiled it with a ferocious right-footed drive, but he got it all wrong and sent the ball harmlessly over the bar.

We brought on Grimes for Clasie when he was shown a yellow card and Grimes did well enough but as the game progressed it seemed that both teams were content with a draw.

That is, until the 88th minute when Fekir dribbled past Weimann and kept the ball moving forward until he found a gap to shoot in low and score his second goal of the day with a lovely strike, although it did seem a bit odd that Lewis did not even move!

There was one final chance for Derby when Weimann crossed the ball low from the left but Vydra put it wide and so the game was ours!

With the match stats in almost perfect balance we were very fortunate that Joe Lewis had an off-day while Fekir decided that today was the day to score his first two goals for the club!
    Spoiler!

The win put us in fifth position, just before we have to play Arsenal at Ewood Park!

    Spoiler!

And, just for those who thought that we paid a lot of money for Besic (11.75M) and Clasie (11.5M)..

I hope that Chalz will get a run at DMC. Besic might not get his place back ! It's good to see that for once you have selection headaches of the right kind !

    What a win!

And after being 2 up you would have been gutted to draw!

Always a pleasure seeing an off day for the opposition keeper!

    Unlucky loss to Arsenal

Om Sunday 16th September we played Arsenal at Ewood Park in front of a crowd of 32,963. Because we had such a good start of the season, including the goalless draw at Old Trafford, our fans expected a lot but after a very good match and a good performance by our lads at the end of the day we were left empty-handed...

Arsenal were the attacking team, but both teams defended extremely well and there were very few scoring chances. Tolisso unleashed a volley at goal, but Steele did well to turn the ball away. Tolisso had another opportunity when he fired a fierce shot towards the goal but he put it high and wide. We had one or two decent chances as well. Nyambe passed the ball into the area looking for Clasie who connected with a diving header, but he put the ball wide and just before the break, when Lens drove the ball in low, Leno did well to parry it.

So there were no goals in the first half and the crowd had their hopes up high for the second half but their hopes were quickly dashed when Griezmann picked up the loose ball and struck it with fury and scored! And barely twelve minutes later he already scored his second goal after a perfect low cross by Deulofeu!

Things looked very bleak indeed and the crowd were virtually silenced but then Fekir decided to try a long shot. Leno fisted the ball away and Lens, who was left unmarked, suddenly had the chance and scored!

So with just ten minutes remaining we made a triple substitution and brought on Martins Indi, Grimes and Claesson. And that actually resulted in a few scoring chances. Fekir picked up on the loose ball and he passed it into the area looking for the run of Lens, who lost his man and finding himself with plenty of room he shot on the volley, but he put the ball narrowly over. Fekir struck a free-kick in a hopeful position, but the wall deflected the shot and Digne scrambled the ball away. And finally, Besic gathered up the loose ball and tried a low and hard shot but Leno showed safe hands again. And then the final whistle was blown.

So we played well, Lens was brilliant as left winger and we certainly deserved more than we got, but this was one of those days when luck was not on our side, especially in those final match minutes.
    Spoiler!

However, there is no real reason for concern; what we need to do is continue to defeat our 'weaker' opponents if we want to qualify for European football this season. And there is no reason why we shouldn't. We even have the squad depth for it.

But first we have to play Mansfield in the EFL Cup 2nd Round. A good game for giving at least Bennett and Martins Indi some much-needed game time and for giving players like Lens - and perhaps Besic - rest.

Shame you couldn't pull off a win playing at home though - But you're right, the performance was there.

ahhhhhh - one of those flip of c oin games where either side could have won but a draw probably a fair result

Just didn't go your way this time

Should be a confidence boosting win and gametime for others in EPL Cup

Rovers crush Mansfield at the One Call Stadium

Three days after we lost to Arsenal, on Wednesday 19th September we played Mansfield in the EFL Cup Second Round and they turned out to be the perfect opponents to help us restore confidence after the undeserved loss three days ago.

For this match Bennett and Grimes got game time so Lens and Chrivella started out on the bench. And it was only a matter of minutes for the match to be decided. Grimes scored with a simple finish and Clasie found the net with a fierce shot (his very first goal for Rovers) all within just six minutes.

So that decided the match more or less. More ore less, because then Nyambe slid through Anderson and a penalty was awarded and Hoban nestled the ball into the back of the net. But that was their one and only shot on goal in the entire match! After that penalty Mansfield withheld the pressure for a while, but just before half-time Fekir finally scored our third goal by firing the ball in low and hard.

In the second half we brought on Chabolah and Henley and with 63 minutes on the clock and no further goals yet we brought on Lens to replace Bennett, who had made little impact. And Lens did well! He provided the assist for our fifth goal, by Marshall, ten minutes after Chalobah had scored our fourth goal with a fierce strike.

And finally, just before the final whistle was blown, Clasie scored another goal.

A very nice game for our attacking line! And Lens once more showed that he, rather than Elliott Bennett, is now the first choice as left winger.
    Spoiler!

Confidence restored! And next weekend we have to play Brentford, who have lost four of their five Premier League games so far. A match we simply cannot afford to lose.

    Funny boy

Actually finally we seem to have less difficulty scoring goals but our defence is indeed leaky!

1 shot, 1 goal. In CM that mostly means a 1-0 defeat. So, you did good, Sam.

    Confident, deserved win over Brentford

On Saturday 22nd September we played Brentford at Griffin Park and after we somehow lost a two-goal lead in the first half we confidently finished them off in the second half!

We got the early goal when Bennett (back in our starting line-up because Lens got slightly injured in training) scored after a superb pass by Fekir. And four minutes later Chirivella doubled our lead with a fine header after a corner taken by Marshall. So just like in our EFL Cup match against Mansfield it seemed that this match was also decided within ten minutes!

And the comparison did not stop there. Smallwood gave Brentford a lifeline after a fierce shot by Hofmann which Steele initially saved but he could not hold onto the ball so Smallwood could apply the finish.

However, unlike in the EFL Cup game, this time our opponents managed to score the equaliser as well! Williams was brought down by Steele in the area and the referee hesitated, looked over to his assistant and awarded the penalty! Fortunately Steele was only shown a yellow card. But Hofmann stepped up and he did send Steele the wrong way to score.

In the second half we set things straight, though. We put a lot of pressure on our opponents and it was Fekir who scored his fourth goal of the season after a perfect low cross by Besic! And just six minutes later Chirivella found the net for the second time to-day. Walker parried the ball after Bennett smashed it in low, but Chirivella was first to the rebound and his goal decided the match.

A well-deserved win. Although it would seem that Martins Indi (chosen over Chalobah) has not fully adjusted yet, our attacking line, including Elliott Bennett, were superb again. Besic was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

That's ten goals in two matches! And a crucial away win to stay in the race. Plus we have two home games coming up next!

    Spoiler!

    Rovers ready for Saints

We need to keep our next opponents below us in the table so we shall play them with the attacking formation which we have not used much at all yet. So far it has been reserved for weaker opponents.

Lens is back from his injury. However, these are hard choices as Bennett has played remarkably well so far this season. And then there's Chalobah and Grimes who also start out on the bench.

On the other hand, we need this kind of bench if we want to have a successful season and qualify for European football.
