Superb Rovers need one half to crush Saints

On Saturday 29th September we played Southampton and broke our club record attendance!

We played a superb first half and at half-time the game was already decided. And it was hardly a coincidence that our goals were all scored by Chirivella and Fekir, who found the net against his old team!

We scored the quick opener when Fekir lobbed the ball into the penalty area ahead of Marshall who lost out to LuaLua, but then Chirivella picked up on the loose ball and struck it with fury and found the net!

Clasie also almost scored, but Forster made a fingertip save to divert the ball wide. However, there was nothing Forster could do when Chirivella smashed the ball in low to score our second goal and nine minutes later Chirivella flicked the ball out left to Fekir who tried a left-footed volley and found the back of the net with a ruthless hit.

The second half was far less exciting. With Grimes for Clasie and with Chalobah for Besic (both players had received yellow cards in the first half) we remained in control of the match, but there were no further goals. And the few times that Saints attempted shots on goal Steele showed safe hands.

Chirivella, with his two goals and an assist, was obviously named Man-of-the-Match, but really this was a more than superb team effort!
    Spoiler!

This important win (and a clean sheet!) has put us in a comfortable 6th position. Just about where we hope to be at the end of the season!

    Spoiler!

Chirivella and Fekir, who scored all three of our goals today, have both had their best start of the season ever. Fekir could become the type of striker we need. Chirivella already is the kind of central midfielder we need to play alongside Clasie, however he is on loan so that could pose a problem for us.
    Spoiler!

But for now we will focus on Leicester City next. The Foxes have lost all seven of their Premier League matches so far which means that they desperately need a few wins or else...

    Two good wins there

Great to see Fekir has settled in well. Thought his average rating would be higher considering he's scored 5 already!

    Chirivella on fire

A game of 2 keepers that one though - not much in it but an off day for Forster and a good day for Steele

    Liverpool willing to sell Chirivella?

They weren't before the season started so we had to loan him again. He is a player for the future to them.
Based on his PA he is our most talented player (179) with Fekire as second (170) but considering Steele's PA of 134 I can't say I'm much of a believer in PA's anymore.

    Deception against Leicester

On Wednesday 3rd October we played Leicester City in front of a crowd of 34,254 who came to witness us win what was supposed to be the easiest match of the season, only it turned out to be a huge deception.

So did we underestimate the team who had lost all of their League matches so far? Or did the Foxes perform above their station? It is hard to tell but the fact is that Slimani scored the early opener and although we still had plenty of time, our lads somehow became nervous and too eager to score the equaliser which enabled Musa to double the score!

At that point we became nervous as well so we brought on Henley for Aké and when Marshall found the net with a header just before half-time most of us thought that we would simply finish them off in the second half after all.

But the second half began with a strong Leicester side. So we brought on Bennett for Lens as we desperately needed two goals, but instead Slimani, who played the match of his life, scored again!!

That seemed to settle it until Chirivella (who else?) hit a hopeful looking long shot and found the net. So with ten minutes remaining we made one final substitution as we brought on Zeqiri for the invisible Fekir, but it was all to no avail. Instead, Slimani completed his hat-trick to silence the crowd and leave our lads empty-handed.

A very curious match. Leicester's first win of the season and they did not even play all that brilliantly while we just had a bad day at the office, although our two central midfielders played as well as always.
    Spoiler!

So what was supposed to be an easy win turned into a deception and we dropped to 8th position. And what's more, we shall have to play mighty Liverpool at Anfield next! That is to say, the Reds have had a poor start to the season but they still have the quality to beat us any time.

    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Hope Akpan has decided to leave to club. Now that we have both Besic and Chalobah as defensive midfielders there was not much chance of first team football for the Nigerian who had recently been relegated to the reserves.

Ouch - leicester by the far the better team and a man on fire in Slimani - you get these days unfortuanately

It's goals galore to start the season - but you certainly need to tighten this defence up. every game seems to be leaking goals

How much you get for Akpan?

Shame about Akpan, did well for you in the beginning but just one of those things where you need upgrades on him.

    Disappointing defeat, especially at home!

Just over a million I think. Unfortunately that is his official value. But he did what he had to do in our promotion year!

After a few years where your defense was rescuing the lack of firepower, it looks like that is now the weak link. Nobody above you has let in more goals, however you are now the leagues leading scorers. Slightly concerning.

It's very odd. Nyambe and Steele both have a lower average rating than was to be expected. BMI is adjusting well now, so I am not overly concerned yet. However, if we'd lose to both Liverpool and Man City things don't look too good anymore. Shudder!

Perhaps one reason is the switching between the two tactics?

Stunning win at Anfield - Fekir scores twice

On Saturday 13th October we played Liverpool at Anfield and while we expected nothing, for some reason this time our opponents were the ones who had a bad day at the office and the match ended in a stunning win for us, thanks largely to Fekir's two wonderful goals.

Although Liverpool seemed keen to get the early goal, it wasn't their day. In fact, we should have scored within two minutes when we countered and Besic spotted Clasie in the area and chipped the ball ahead of him. Clasie found himself with plenty of time and he shot on the volley, but he put the ball just over.

Two minutes later, though, Fekir found the net with a fierce shot and so we had our early goal after all! And in fact, Clasie almost doubled our lead with a ferocious right-footed strike but it was well held by Karius who denied our central midfielder a great goal.

And surprisingly, we remained in control of the contest. Somehow Liverpool seemed unable to do much and it was once more Fekir who scored! After dribbling past Caulker he tried a fierce strike. Karius could only parry it and Fekir reacted immediately to the rebound and scored his second goal of the day!

Next we brought on Henley for Aké, who had received a yellow card, but it was clear now that Liverpool were the beaten team and in fact we should have scored at least one more goal in the second half, but of course nobody cared too much about that.

A wonderful team performance on Liverpool's off-day! Fekir was obviously named Man-of-the-Match. He has now scored seven goals in just ten appearances.
    Spoiler!

This unexpected and much-needed win keeps us in the race but we have to play Man City next! Still, we know now that anything is possible.

    Spoiler!

At least we can look forward to our next game with more confidence. Of course, some fans still complain on social media about our performance against Southampton (and yes, we did lose three unnecessary points that day) but three points from the last two matches is still not bad! The Board, at least, is very pleased.

Fantastic win and a precious clean sheet. I had my doubts about Fekir when you brought him in, but he is delivering the goods. Big game against City next.

Duelund not even on the bench. Is he injured ?

I have recently brought Duelund for one of my saves and although on the pitch he did the business, off the pitch he was a nightmare! Wanted a to move to a bigger club after 1 season, started to dislike a lot of his team mates and moan about being substituted! Brought him for Ł975k and sold for Ł11.5m so not all bad, kept an eye on him and he is now causing the same problems at his new club to, just a word of warning!

That is good information! I wonder if that is a random attribute or what. Let's see if he behaves any better at Rovers.

Man City prove too strong for Rovers

On Sunday 21st October we played Man City in front of a crowd of 34,538 - and we played well, but Man City proved just a little too strong for us.

City want the title after a very disappointing season (they ended in 7th position last year) and they came out with an attacking 4-4-1-1 formation with Kevin De Bruyne as attacking midfielder behind their striker, Agüero. And as it turned out De Bruyne proved to be in top form!

With twenty minutes on the clock Agüero went down from a shove by Henley and De Bruyne lined up the free-kick, fired it in from 20 yards out and found the back of the net! We needed a goal now, but we played cautiously while hoping for a break. However, just before half-time Matic hit the ball towards De Bruyne in the area and De Bruyne got to the ball before Nyambe, headed it towards goal and found the net for the second time!

That second goal decided the match, of course. However, Man City seemed content with the score-line and in the second half nothing too much happened, although we gradually began to take more risks. And then, with fifteen minutes remaining Martins Indi turned on the ball, took it forward and passed it into the area looking for Fekir. Our striker showed good ball control and scored with a low shot to give as a way back into the match!

We quickly made a triple substitution now and we brought on Aké, Bennett and Grimes, but the truth of the matter is that Man City did not give us another chance. In fact, in a counter Ntcham almost scored for them when he shot on the volley, but Steele managed to turn the ball behind.

A really good team performance by our lads, but Man City showed their superior class and they deserved the win.
    Spoiler!

We can only be proud of the team, but we did lose the match and we dropped to 8th position. However, our upcoming fixtures look reasonable, so surely we will get back to winning ways again!

    Spoiler!

Now because our coaches are all positive about Duelund we decided to give him a chance and so we promoted him to the seniors.
    Spoiler!

This means that Zeqiri is no longer needed and we have terminated his loan deal. In fact, the Swiss striker has returned to Everton today. And with Zeqiri back at Everton we can now loan another player in the January transfer window, if necessary!

I think that you really needed to win that one, or at least draw, in order to keep up with the Leaders. All of the big names are now ahead of you and it will be difficult to come from behind.

Am I imagining it, or is your away form better than home ? Is it worth reverting back to the previous home tactics ?

    No you're not imagining things

Tomorrow I'll try to post the actual results. We do so well in away games (including a goalless draw at Old Trafford and a 0-2 win at Anfield) and so poorly in home games that it's not funny anymore!

Was it not worth keeping Zeqiri just in case of injuries, etc? After all, you can't get anyone else in until January either way?

Looking forwards to seeing how Duelund copes with all the hype surrounding him!

True, but we also have Victor Claesson as backup. Oh, and Duelund scored for the reserves in his third match, by the way. He got injured in his second match.

I can understand Zeqiri going. With Fekir, Duelund and Lens all ahead of him for the 1 attacking role there is not much point in having Zeqiri as well. If for some reason all 3 were out, I'm sure that you have a spotty teenager in the stiffs squad

Not sure why Kingsley thinking you should be beating the league leaders?!

Some fans need to realise Top 8 would again be successful this year. You're having to manage the finances whilst dropping in the odd bit of sparkle in aplayer when you are able to get one

A decent effort against City but 2 top performers stole the show for them

Agreed with Mark about the loan sisgning just in case but soudns like you're well stocked anyway

Yep - good run of fixtures coming up - need to pick a decent amount of points up
