Clasie as central midfielder against Chelsea

Besic has been banned for this one match and Jordy Clasie will take over his role as central defensive midfielder against Chelsea. Chalobah and Aké will start out on the bench.

This means that Grimes will take over Clasie's role and play alongside Chirivella, who is back just in time from his injury.

Chelsea, on the other hand, have decided to play with three strikers, hoping to score an early goal.

Rovers vs Chelsea ends in draw

On Saturday 1st December we played Chelsea in front of a loud, enthusiastic crowd of 32,999.

Chirivella is back from his injury, and Clasie replaced Besic as defensive midfielder. Both players did remarkably well, but Clasie's absence as central midfielder was also very evident.

Nevertheless, we held Chelsea to an unexpected and encouraging 2-2 draw!

Chelsea seemed keen to get the early goal and they got it, too! They played with three forwards (Batshuayi, Diego Costa and Solanke) and with just four minutes on the clock it was Diego Costa who provided the assist and Batshuayi who got into the box and blasted the ball towards the top corner and scored!

But with the incredible support of the home crowd we quickly got back into the match! Just three minutes later Chirivella read the game well to cut out the pass. Fekir received the ball and brought it down well before smashing it in low and scoring the equaliser to cancel out Batshuayi's opener! A crucial goal that helped avoid an embarrassing walkover.

The game could go either way now, but Chelsea have some world class players and with 28 minutes on the clock it was their third striker, Solanke, who scored with a fierce shot to put Chelsea in the lead again!

Chelsea had what they wanted and they were content with the scoreline. We needed a goal, though. And we knew it would not be easy to draw level a second time.

So well into the second half, with some 30 minutes remaining and just after Solanke had almost scored again, we brought on Duelund for Grimes who had been more or less invisible. It was a risk, but we had to do something.

But it was Fekir found Chirivella with a pass to the left. Chirivella laid the ball right to Marshall who had to stretch to reach the pass; he took the ball into the box and drove a right-footed shot low towards the goal and scored!!

So we had drawn level for a second time!!

And we immediately made another substitution and brought on Aké for Bruno Martins Indi who was less than 100% fit. Chelsea also brought on fresh legs with Cahill replacing Christensen and 36-year old Philipp Lahm replacing Riedewald. And Diego Costa came very close with a savage right-footed shot, only he was pressured by Nyambe and he put it narrowly over.

The final attempt at goal was by us. From long range, Dueland bent the ball towards goal, but Courtois did well to parry it and so the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

And judging by the match stats, the game was more or less in balance. Chirivella, back from his injury, was immediately named Man-of-the-Match with his two assists! Henley also played fantastically again. He is having a great season so far and has been offered the new contract he wanted.
    Spoiler!

A draw against Chelsea is always good, but nevertheless this will be a very long and challenging season! As one pundit has repeatedly pointed out, we might very well end in 8th position, just like last season, and even that would be a result to be proud of.

However, the fans want European football! And not just the fans...

    Spoiler!

Our next opponents will be Watford in the EFL Cup Quarter Final and then West Ham United at Ewood Park!

If it's Blackburn, West Brom, Soke and Charlton then you would have to fancy your chances.

Rovers advance to EFL Semi Final

On Wednesday 5th December we played Watford in the EFL Cup Quarter Final at Vicarage Road and we won the match to qualify for the Semi Final.

We took no risks so we played in our best possible formation and it should hardly come as a surprise that Lens and Fekir were the ones to score our goals.

With ten minutes on the clock Marshall hit the ball in low and Lens scored in the rebound to give us an early lead. But that did not mean the game was over. Watford have a more than decent goalkeeper in Szczesny who frustrated our attacking line again and again.

Fekir, Chirivella, Lens and Marshall all tried but they failed to score the deciding second goal until Szczesny made his one and only mistake of the day when he lifted a goal kick up-field and Fekir could simply collect the ball. Our striker did not hesitate. He struck the ball with fury and scored!

For the remaining five minutes plus injury time we brought on Duelund and he played well, but there were no further goals.

Besic was named Man-of-the-Match for the third time this season.
    Spoiler!

So this means that while we have already played our Quarter Final match the other clubs still have to play theirs.

For now we can concentrate on what's really important: the Premier League!

Ten man Rovers beat Hammers at Ewood Park

On Sunday 9th December we played West Ham United in front of a crowd of 34,510 with Grimes replacing the suspended Jordy Clasie.

The Hammers had a very good start to the season and they were just ahead of us in the table but (after Grimes had been sent off!) we managed to defeat them by a late goal scored by Ben Marshall!

We played very cautiously with Nyambe effectively marking Andy Carrol out of the game but this also meant that after 45 minutes there were still no goals. Flanagan had attempted a bullet header which Ospina did well to parry and when Henley was first to the rebound Ospina managed to smother the ball. On the other side, Lennon had blasted a banana shot from outside of the area but Steele had turned the ball behind. And that was all the scoring chances. So we knew we would have to take some risks in the second period.

But the second half had barely started when Grimes pushed Greswell away and was sent off!! A very harsh decision by the referee but we had to finish the game with ten men now. Somehow Grimes is not the same player that he was before Chirivella and Clasie joined the club, but he hardly deserved a red card.

Our defence played fantastically though, and with twenty minutes remaining and still no goals Carrol was brought off and replaced by Zaza but just as we struggled more and more to withstand the pressure Besic lifted the ball ahead of Lens in the area. Lens got free and took the ball on the bounce and shot, but Ospina did well to turn the ball away! Only Marshall was there just in time to apply the finish as he scored his 5th goal of the season!

West Ham had twelve minutes remaining to score the equaliser and they came close when Reed chipped the ball into the penalty area towards Ibe whose superb header was well held by Steele so to the delight of the crowd our goalkeeper, with the help of his defence, kept a clean sheet and we won the match with ten men!

Our defence played brilliantly again. Flanagan was named Man-of-the-Match. His contract will expire at the end of this season so just like Henley he has been offered a new contract and does he ever deserve it!
    Spoiler!

A very important win which helps us to stay in the race to qualify for European football, especially with the tough upcoming fixtures, including away games at Tottenham and Crystal Palace (!) to start with!

    Spoiler!

Meanwhile we signed another young talented striker, Cristian Vera, who will join us on the 1st of January on a free transfer. Vera is considered to be a huge talent by our scouts - his PA is 195.

    Spoiler!

And then, on Wednesday 12th December the remaining EFL Cup matches were played and as was to be expected, Liverpool and Man City both qualified for the Semi Final.

    Spoiler!

Great win with 10 men! Well grounded out

Vera looks like a good steal! Hopefully he keeps improving and will be ready for the first team next season perhaps!

Shame you didn't get West Ham in the final but not impossible to win.

    Doing very well indeed.

Keep yourself in the tie in the first leg and it's all to play for at Ewood.

    League form also very good.

    Cracking win v Hamners

You'll get battered by the mighty reds in the cup!

How many others out of contract end of season in first XI?! Get them signed up!

Rovers' undefeated run ended by Spurs

On Sunday 16th December our undefeated streak of four wins and two draws came to a brutal end at White Hart Lane.

Grimes has been banned for just one match after his red card the other day, but more seriously Besic was injured in training so he is out for about a week with a bruised shin. Therefore, we had Nathaniel Chalobah replace him and not for the first time it was quite a disappointing performance by our backup defensive midfielder.

We had Nyambe marking Harry Kane and with both teams starting extremely cautiously there were very few serious scoring chances until Wanyama hit a 35-yard ball ahead of Alli who was onside and through on goal. Alli controlled the ball well and he put some curve on the shot and scored a great opener!

Now Spurs have a solid defence and with not just Chalobah but also Flanagan and Henley having an off-day our opponents easily withheld any pressure until the break.

In the second half we started well. Marshall floated the ball over into the area where Chirivella got above Fernández to win the ball and head it down for Lens. Lens tried a pot-shot at goal, but Lloris managed to push the ball away.

With half an hour remaining we brought off Henley and brought on Duelund. Marshall took over Henley's role as right defender and Duelund played as right winger. And our young attacker played well. He is beginning to settle in nicely. However, it did not lead to the equaliser we needed.

And with three minutes remaining Spurs countered, Bellerin played the ball ahead looking for Rose who passed the ball first time into the area looking for Suárez. Now Suárez found himself with plenty of time, shot on the volley from out wide and scored with a lovely strike!

We missed Besic sorely as we were outplayed by a strong side. Why are Spurs only in twelfth position, though?
    Spoiler!

A nasty loss and we shall have to play Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next! So far Palace are the revelation of the season and it will be another tough game for us.

The problem is, we cannot afford to lose too many games with the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Spurs breathing in our necks. And certainly not with the fixtures coming up next!

I don't know what is up with Chalz. He has always been brilliant as a DMC for me. Perhaps he needs to play regularly.

Disappointing to lose to Spurs, but the run had to end at some point. Top 2 for your next 2 games. Not going to be easy, even if you are at home.

That is some team Spurs have - suprised they are so far down the table

Looking at the team and away from home a point would have been great - 100% shots on target just a clinical day for them
