    Duelund...

Ah Well, point's a point. Nice cheeky snap up on Chirivella!

Great win over Everton, knew Grimes was ready to step up!

Shame about being held to a draw versus Newcastle though, silly Duelund!

Good news about Chirivella, Ł1.7m a bargain really.

A hard fought point when the cards were not in your favour. Disappointed in Duelund, but I don't remember you picking up many red cards. The chase for the final Champions League places is really hotting up now.

Rovers to FA Cup 4th Round

On Saturday 5th January we played Cardiff City FC in the FA Cup 3rd Round in front of a crowd of 18,322.

Cardiff are the current runners-up in the Championship but it took us less than half an hour to demolish them!

It isn't as if Cardiff don't have a decent team. In fact, they created several scoring opportunities, but our attacking line was far more effective and when our opponents produced shots on target Ferenc László showed his class!

Cardiff started with an attacking formation but we scored the early opener when Fekir had a go from a free-kick and the wall deflected the shot. Lens collected the ball and laid it off and Marshall scored with a low drive!

Ten minutes later it was Grimes' turn. Marshall looked certain to score his second goal of the day, but Begovic got his fingertips to the ball and it was Grimes who scored from the rebound. It must be said that Grimes does a great job, replacing the injured Pedro Chirivella. He is just not consistent enough. Certainly not as consistent as Chrivella or Clasie.

Now Cardiff almost clawed one back when Bannon sent a shot in low, but Lászlo did well to parry it. A few minutes later it was all over when Fekir scored our third goal with the assist coming from Henley.

In the second half we took it (too) easy and Cardiff actually created some decent scoring chances. Bannon sent the ball into the area and King drove it in low but Lászlo got his fingertips to the ball. And when Nouble unleashed a volley at goal Lászlo once again managed to beat the ball away with a superb reflex.

Eventually Fekir scored our fourth goal from the spot after Solomon-Otabor had clattered Clasie and so we simply advanced to the FA Cup 4th Round.

An easy game for us. Remarkably, Ferenc László was named Man-of-the-Match!
    Spoiler!

We will face either Wigan or West Ham in the FA Cup Fourth Round. But in nine days time we will play our next Premier League game, which has far more priority for us right now.

    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Steele might wonder about László's fantastic performance. Steele knows he is our first goalkeeper, but he definitely has some competition now!

Prize money should be easily enough to cover Chirivella. That is a great capture.

Good win and lets hope that Wigan can pull of a surprise in the replay with West Ham

What a debut by the new GK! Shame we didn't get to see the other striker in action too, especially with Duelund out.

For me it would be a proper left winger.I'm not sure that is Lens best position. I think abetter central defender would not be a bad thing.

I agree. Perhaps even a right winger as well.

It is often not so much as to which position needs improving, but you take every upgrade you can get. Every player in your team is not Messi, or even close. So I always keep an eye out for top level players who lift your whole team, regardless of their position.

But in your team, I would look closely at the instructions for the centre backs, replace both full backs and both wingers.

    Solid win

Yes - I agree - whole defence could be improved further if the right players become available

    Rovers humiliated at St.Mary's

On Monday 14th January we played Southampton at St.Mary's (the first in a short series of 'easier' matches) and it was a match that we quickly want to forget!!

With Duelund suspended, Chirivella injured and Nyambe away on international duty we had to make some changes in our team, but Steele was back on goal. Thanks to our excellent goalkeeper coaches, De Goey and Westerveld, Steele continues to develop and improve his game at a steady rate which is good to see!
    Spoiler!

But to-day anything that can go wrong did go wrong! It started with Ojo laying the ball off and the ball hitting Clasie's arm. The referee awarded a penalty, Hřjbjerg sent Steele the wrong way and with six minutes on the clock we were 1-0 down!

Initially we played well enough, but Lens failed to score after an excellent pass by Besic. He tried a low drive but he put it wide. Fekir also had a scoring chance, but Forster did well to save and hold the ball.

And then, with about an hour remaining, Clasie squared up to Targett and he was sent off! So we had to finish the game with ten men.

In the second half we hoped against hope that we would score the equaliser. We brought on Bilal for Marshall, who seemed to be struggling, and Chalobah for Flanagan who played poorly for the second game in a row, but it was all to no avail. In fact, things got even worse when Martins Indi barged Ojo in the back and the referee showed him his second yellow card and sent him off!!

And obviously that second red card settled it. With nine men we were helpless as Walcott and Pinto scored Saints' second and third goal in the final match minutes.

There was little we could do with that avalanche of yellow and red cards. A match to forget! Besic and Steele were the only two players we could still be proud of to-day.
    Spoiler!

Liverpool and Tottenham are slowly but surely catching up with us. At this rate we could drop to eighth position very soon. So it's essential that we recover quickly and defeat Derby County next, before we have to play our two Cup games.

    Spoiler!

The good news (if there is any) is that Mikkel Duelund has improved his attitude. At least in training. And that is a good sign.

    Ouch !
At least 2 more suspensions to add to the missing players. That game could result in more than just 3 points dropped.

It's only a one game ban so as long as we can beat Derby County at Ewood Park next that is no problem.

    Rovers narrowly defeat Derby County

On Saturday 19th January we played Derby County in front of a crowd of 34,050 and after the horrible display at St.Mary's this time we narrowly defeated Derby much to the relief of our faithful fans and the Rovers staff and Board.

Clasie, Martins Indi and Dueland are all suspended and Chirivella is still injured so we played with a makeshift midfield again. Grimes and Chalobah started as central midfielders.

The lads were visibly nervous after the performance (or the lack of it!) at St.Mary's and they played cautiously, but as it turned out we had little to fear from our mediocre opponents.

Remarkably, it was Grimes who scored the winning goal. Aké lifted the ball forward, Flanagan chipped it in the direction of Chalobah, who stretched to reach the pass and lifted the ball towards Grimes in the area. And Grimes did what he does best, he finished the team move!

Evidently Grimes has become our super-sub, a label that no player wants. However, for the club it is always reassuring to know that we have a super-sub who can save the day!

Deep into the second half we brought on Bilal for the invisible Marshall and Claesson for Fekir, who had played quite well but who had been shown a yellow card. However, even with those fresh legs there were no further goals. Still, the three points were in the bag and we had another clean sheet.

So a good recovery and a more than decent team performance, even though we should have scored more goals. Grimes was named Man-of-the-Match. Ironically, he will probably start out on the bench again next time.
    Spoiler!

Elsewhere Crystal Palace dropped two points, Liverpool lost at Bournemouth (1-0) but Spurs defeated Newcastle (2-0) so the race continues!

    Spoiler!

So it's a little break from the Premier League now as we play West Ham in the FA Cup next, followed by Liverpool in the EFL Cup Semi Final First Leg.

    A surprise signing

After the match the Board unexpectedly announced the signing of the young and talented Swedish defender Linus Wahlqvist on a free transfer! Wahlqvist can play both as central defender and right defender so he perfectly fits the bill!

    Spoiler!

And with Chirivella back from his injury literally everyone is fit and available for our FA Cup match, including Wahlqvist!

With everyone back from their suspension or injury Clasie and Chirivella can start as central midfielders again and as we have to play two Cup matches next, László Ferenc will probably get game time again.

Solid 3 points considering the players out. That 6 point gap to 5th will need to be reduced soon or it might be too late. Leicester and Brentford might be exactly the right teams for you to take maximum points and turn the Arsenal game into a six-pointer.

I don't know anything about this Wahlqvist lad, but if he is a central defender who can play right-back then he is a good squad addition.

Yeah, Wahlqvist is as good as any of our defenders, or better, with his stats and his PA of 163.

As to the top six, still waiting for Palace to collapse! We have a seven-point gap with them that should be easier to bridge.

Wahlqvist is a beast, a must buy for any Prem club outside the top 6 and to get him for a free is a bonus.

One of my favourite defenders on this update. Super consistent.

This is the first team in the series (Feyenoord, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Blackburn Rovers) which forces me to be very careful with money and which does not attract world class players. A bit of a change!
