Rovers victorious at the Emirates as Clasie scores last-minute winner

On Monday 11th February we played Arsenal at Emirates Stadium and thanks to Jordy Clasie (and a big chunk of luck) we won our sixth game in a row!

It was a very close game which very few people thought we would win. And indeed, Arsenal scored the first goal, but Jordy Clasie was invaluable today with his first half equaliser and his last-minute winner! Having said that, Steele and Martins Indi were fantastic as well!

Arsenal seemed keen to get the early goal but they struggled to seize control of the midfield, so with just nineteen minutes on the clock they brought off left defender Rob Holding to be replaced by Alexis Sánchez in order to strengthen their forward line.

And that had a dramatic effect! Less than five minutes later Alexis Sánchez put his foot on the ball and advanced on Jason Steele. Besis could not stop the Chilean forward who turned well despite the slippery surface and passed the ball into the area looking for Griezmann, who made himself some space and scored with a fierce strike!

However, we were not beaten yet! A few minutes later Grimes took the ball forward and found Fekir with a through pass into the area. Fekir set up Clasie who was unmarked and drove the ball in low to cancel out Griezmann's opener! Leno did not move!

Now although Griezmann and Alexis Sánchez gave our defence a hard time, there were no more goals in the first half.

In the second half both teams played more cautiously. With thirty minutes remaining we brought on Duelund for Marshall and when Nyambe was shown a yellow card we brought him off to be replaced by Chalobah.

Both Duelund and Chalobah played well and as time wound down a draw seemed to be the logical outcome, especially when the referee turned down our penalty appeal after Mastafi clattered Fekirl!

But in the final match minute Duelund collected the ball and moved upfield with it. He squared the ball from the right towards Lens who ran at Süle. Süle made an inch-perfect tackle to win the ball from Lens, only for Clasie to be left with a simple finish and our Dutch midfielder found the net for the second time today!!

An unexpected, possible undeserved, but most welcome victory! Steele and Martins Indi were important for us, but obviously Clasie was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

This spectacular victory means that we are still in a solid fifth position, but in reality there are at least seven clubs in the race and with Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool all breathing in our neck plus Chelsea having a game in hand, anything can still happen!

    Spoiler!

We have to play Chelsea in the FA Cup next and then Liverpool in the EFL Cup so Ferenc László will get game time again. It's luxury to have two such excellent goalkeepers but it will be a hard choice to decide who will play next season!

Suddenly getting VERY interesting. If Chelsea win and Arsenal lose the game in hand we are looking at one hell of a dogfight for Europe.

    Heroic Rovers stun Chelsea

On Saturday 16th February we played Chelsea in the FA Cup 5th Round at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea played with an extremely attacking formation which they have been using a lot this season - though not always successfully.
    Spoiler!

Fekir was very important for us again, but it was Zouma's early red card and the awarded penalty when Ki Sung-Yong knocked Marshall to the floor, which decided the match in our favour!

Chelsea started well enough. With just two minutes on the clock Eder took the ball past Flanagan and blasted it towards the top corner, but László did well to parry it and Clasie cleared the ball to safety.

Our first scoring chance came barely two minutes later when Marshall sent the ball into the area where Fekir controlled it well, lost his man and tried a volley and found the back of the net!!

That was a dream start for us, but there was still plenty of time for Chelsea, only Zouma decided to clatter Clasie and he was sent off for his trouble so that Chelsea were now not only 1-0 down but they also had to finish the game with ten man!

Not that this made them change their tactics all that much, though.
    Spoiler!

Chelsea's boldness resulted in a quick equaliser when Oscar skipped past Flanagan and found himself in some space. He shot the ball hard and low towards goal and scored. For us that was an unexpected setback.

Chelsea now dropped the pace a little and the match was more or less in balance when Ki Sung made his mistake and Fekir scored the penalty, which more or less decided the match. Chelsea realised it wasn't their day and we seized control of the game from this point on.

The match wasn't really over until deep into the second half when Marshall crossed the ball low from the right and Grimes took it in his stride. He advanced on Courtois and hit the ball in low to score his tenth goal of the season! Grimes keeps surprising friends and foes alike!

Fekir almost completed his hat-trick when he blasted the ball towards the top corner and Courtois could only parry it, but Gueye put the ball out for a throw.

So a shocking away win against Arsenal first and now a stunning away win against Chelsea! Who could have predicted that? Fekir was named Man-of-the-Match this time.
    Spoiler!

The biggest upset today was that Crystal Palace, the revelation of the Premier League, were eliminated by Stevenage!

Also, in Manchester the local derby ended in City being defeated and eliminated by Man Utd (0-1).

    Spoiler!

Next we have to play the return match against Liverpool in the EFL Cup Semi-Final. We already won the first leg 0-2 at Anfield so we have our hopes up high for the second leg at Ewood Park. Not that we shall take any risks, though. We will play them in our best possible formation.

Three ways to get into Europe!

(The draw for the QF is in the spoiler. On my phone spoilers don't seem to work, though. So you need a PC for that.)

Wow, what a result! Some real though draws in the Cups, though. We need to keep our focus on the League as the chance of ending up emptyhanded is a little too big for my taste.

You are going to win one of the cups.
And gatecrash the Champions League places. Could even make a late dash for the title if you keep this form up.

Hell of a season you are having. Be interesting to see how you go without Besic in the side though.

    Shut it, Eejit

What a win though! If only that was in the league but will definitely welcome a good cup run!

Besic will be a big miss, such a key player.

    What a lovely red card

Professional job to win from there away from home

ANOTHER tough away draw - they are putting you through the ringer!

Besic indeed a blow but massive team confidence at the moment

Rovers to EFL Cup Final !

On Wednesday 20th February we played Liverpool in the EFL Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg in front of a large crowd of 32,922 who came to celebrate our recent successes. Not that we have won any prizes yet, but still..
    Spoiler!

After having won the first leg at Anfield (0-2) we probably took this 2nd leg less seriously than we should have. And although Chalobah did a reasonable job as defensive midfielder, we still missed the suspended Muhamed Besic. And so a strong Liverpool side came closer than we had expected!

At half time there were still no goals, only a few attempts on goal by both teams including a bullet header by Schürle but the ball was parried well by László. Overall we were the better team and we seemed in little danger of being knocked out of the EFL Cup.

So in the second half we brought on Duelund to give Fekir rest. But then, with 50 minutes on the clock Wijnaldum had a go from a freekick and scored with a great strike from 25 yards out! And suddenly Liverpool smelled blood!

We had to defend now and we defended well. When Nyambe was shown a yellow card we decided to take no risks, though. So we brought on Aké to replace him. Even so we were under a some pressure in the last fifteen minutes or so, until we countered well and Lens scored the deciding goal with a low and hard shot!

Not a bad game; and based on the entire match we certainly deserved that late equaliser. Martins Indi was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

We immediately have to play Liverpool again, this time in the Premier League and still without Besic and now also without Nyambe who will also be banned for two matches. However, at least Wahlqvist is back from his injury so either he or Aké will replace Nyambe.

But it seems we have another problem on our hands...

Our coaches say that Duelund is a huge talent, but he is lacking in professionalism, sportsmanship and loyalty.

Be that as it may, since he is not fit he will certainly not play against Liverpool.

Lets do the double over pool and end their season now.

Shame that Duelund isn't behaving himself, I wonder how long your patience will last with him.

Nyambe gonna be a big miss on top of Besic now!

Well done on reaching the final, gonna be tough against Man City!

Like whatshis name said, he signed Duelund and experienced the same, but could sell him for over 10M

Rovers' undefeated run ends against Liverpool

On Saturday 23rd February we played Liverpool four the fourth time this season in front of a crowd of 32,999 and for the first time this season they beat us!

With Besic and Nyambe both banned and with Chirivella injured (plus Duelund not being fit) we started out with Wahlqvist as central defender, with Chalobah as defensive midfielder and, of course, with Grimes replacing Chirivella as usual.

But the truth of the matter is that we probably missed Duelund the most. With Fekir playing below par who knows what might have happened if we could have brought on Duelund today?

So anyway, we opted for Wahlqvist (just back from his injury!) instead of Aké to replace Nyambe but just after Fekir had shot hard and low on goal but had put it wide our latest signing picked up a knock and he had to go off injured again! And so we had to bring on Aké after all.

Liverpool started to put less emphasis on defence now and Henderson came close with a swerving shot, but Steele saved and deflected the ball clear. On the other side, Fekir looked to jink past Mané who slid through our striker but the referee turned down our claims for a penalty.

In the second half we kicked off, hoping for the best, but 30 seconds later Fermino scored his 100th league goal of his career with a lovely strike and suddenly we were 0-1 down!

It must be added that Liverpool defended extremely well after that opening goal. Marshall looked about to score when he blasted the ball towards the top corner but Karius saved well and held the ball. It was actually our one and only shot on target!

So our undefeated run of seven wins and a draw has come to an end. Chalobah was named Man-of-the-Match, but Fekir was more or less invisible today.
    Spoiler!

We are still in fifth position, though, because Spurs are still unpredictable. After their good recent results they lost at Brentford!

Also, Crystal Palace are finally imploding. After their shock FA Cup loss to Stevenage this time they lost at home (0-3) to Leicester City.

    Spoiler!

So now we have to travel to Manchester twice! Hopefully we won't come back empty-handed both times.

Rovers sneak win at the Etihad Stadium

On Sunday 3rd March we played Man City at the Etihad Stadium without Nyambe (suspended) or Wahlqvist (injured again) but both Besic and Chirivella were back again!

And our star players made the difference! In what was a thriller of a match it first looked as if we were losing the game by a 74th-minute goal scored by Agüero, but in the final ten match minutes we sneaked the win when first Chirivella and next Jeremain Lens found the net!!

As was to be expected Man City seemed keen to get the early goal and they immediately created a couple of good scoring chances! With just three minutes on the clock Agüero got past Martins Indi and put some curve on the shot. Steele initially let the ball run free but then smothered it quickly and sent it upfield, only for Matic to head the ball to De Bruyne who lofted it upfield. Agüero took control of the ball and had a go from long range! Steele could not gather the ball cleanly but Flanagan cleared the ball from danger and so we managed to withhold the pressure.

Our first chance (although it was barely a chance) came with twenty minutes on the clock. Fekir came forward and tried to find a way past Stones who stopped our striker with a perfectly timed tackle.

Next in was City's turn again. De Bruyne hit a fierce strike, but Steele let the ball run free. Gündogan picked up on the loose ball and tried a low shot but Steele smothered the ball and kicked it upfield. A little later Agüero got free in the penalty area and tried a volley but Steele managed to turn it behind!

Fekir had one decent chance just before half time, but Bravo saved and deflected the ball clear and so there were no goals in the first half.

Initially, the second half was a mirror image of the first half. City moved forward in numbers and created some scoring chances but Steele showed safe hands, while we created very few scoring opportunities and, just like last week, Fekir seemed to struggle.

So with less than thirty minutes remaining we decided to bring on Duelund for Fekir. But ten minutes later Stone dribbled past Clasie and played the ball past Besic before laying it off to a charging Agüero who hit a speculative effort and finished their brilliant team move!

That late goal seemed to decide the match. Man City were the better team, they had the home advantage and the goal was well-deserved.

So not surprisingly, City took their foot off the gas a little now but they seemed to remain well in control of the game when suddenly Marshall found Clasie with a superb long pass from the left. Clasie hit the ball first time to Dueland in the area. Duelund set up Chirivella who lost his man and fired the ball in low and hard and scored! With just ten minutes remaining we had equalised!

Man City looked to push forward in numbers again and they were almost successful when De Bruyne found Gündogan, who got free in the penalty area and hit a fierce shot! Steele saved but he could not hold onto the ball. However, Clasie took control of the loose ball and cleared it to safety!

A few minutes later Matic went down after a trip by Chalobah. De Bruyne struck the freekick, but he was frustrated by Steele's lightning reflex save! And De Bruyne gave the corner straight to Chirivella who played the ball out of defence.

So a draw seemed inevitable when, deep into injury time, Marshall had another brilliant moment. He played the ball past Moreno and past Kolarov and put a low cross into the area where Lens was ready to blast the ball towards the top corner and score the winning goal!! And immediately the final whistle was blown!

A sneak win if ever there was one! We did not deserve it and perhaps it would have been better to pull a trick like this in the EFL Cup final, but for now, who cares!? Jason Steele was named Man-of-the-Match!
    Spoiler!

We are still in a solid fifth position, but Arsenal does have a game in hand. Still, things look very good right now, even though Palace won a game again.

    Spoiler!

So we will be facing Man Utd next in the FA Cup Quarter Final at Old Trafford! And we know now that literally anything is possible!

Oof, not a great showing against Liverpool but you've more than made up for it by beating Man City. Definitely looks as though you're in a good place to finish in the top 6 after getting that tough run of games out of the way.
