Man Utd eliminate Rovers from FA Cup

On Saturday 9th March we lost to Man Utd in the FA Cup Quarter Final. Perhaps it was inevitable. You can't win them all!

The team that is bound to win the Premier League this season showed us that we have a long way to go yet. We did not play as well as usual and did not even come close to beating them.

Rashford scored both goals for Man Utd while Fekir is still very much struggling to find his form back.

So we never had a chance. Rashford scored in the first half after a long run with the ball and in the second half, after we had already made a triple substitution that made little or no difference (although it must be said that Duelund played decently again) Rashford scored the second goal with a low and hard shot when he had been left unmarked by Nyambe.

So we had no chance against the Premier League leaders, but at least Besic played like a champion and Ferenc László showed once more that he really is a quality goalkeeper.
    Spoiler!

And now for something completely different! It's......Charlton Athletic coming to Ewood Park!

Probably good in terms of no fixture congestion that you went out.
Win the League Cup and a chase for that top 4 is still on!

The first one (League Cup) would need nothing short of another miracle, like when we beat them at the Etihad recently.
Top 6 is still our main goal.
Top 4 would be well above expectation!

    Rovers defeat ten-man Charlton

On Saturday 16th March we played Charlton Athletic in front of a lively crowd of 35,723 who effectively helped us to bounce back from our FA Cup elimination. The red card obviously helped, too.

It took us less than three minutes to score the opening goal. Marshall provided the assist by sending the ball into the area in front of Besic who tried a half-volley and found the back of the net!

A little later Chirivella nearly scored on the volley as well, but he sent the ball sky-rocketing over the bar. We had further scoring opportunities, but when O'Brien was sent off for shoving Henley, the game was obviously already in the bag.

So in the second half we brought on Duelund for Marshall, and Chalobah to replace Besic, because both midfielders had been shown a yellow card and we did not want to take any unnecessary risks. Besides, Duelund and Chalobah are players who need game time!

Jordy Clasie almost scored when Chirivella set him up in the area. Clasie controlled the ball brilliantly and looked to chip it over Jakupovic, but it was just over the bar.

Our fans had to be patient but eventually Fekir scored the clincher. Chirivella looked for our striker in the penalty area and when Fekir found himself with plenty of time he blasted the ball towards the top corner and scored! And a much-needed confidence booster it was, too!

A solid team performance, although we should perhaps have scored more goals. Besic was named Man-of-the-Match, even though he played only in the first half.
    Spoiler!

With just eight games remaining you might say that the race is on! Even Crystal Palace have won again. But excitement is mounting at Ewood Park as fans begin to talk more and more about European football!

    Spoiler!

After the upcoming two-week international break we'll be playing in the EFL Cup Final against Man City! We are obviously the underdogs but as we keep telling the lads, it's an honour to even play in the Final!

Still, the fact of the matter is that we are having a fabulous season. Both Fekir and Marshall have just set new club records today. Fekir with his 16th League goal to end his brief goal drought and Marshall with his assists.

Always tough v Utd away in cup

Another red card - you bribing the refs?

Looking at those league fixtures coming up that should easily guarantee Top 6 and should put you well in the Top 4.
What do the final few league games look like? Any '6 pointers'?

Huge game next - go forth and conquer!

Any injury/suspension worries? Hopefully nothing bad happens in Intl break

A nice stroll in the park against Charlton there.

I like that you've now got a well earned rest before the final - Hope it helps. Do Man City have any games in that time?

No they don't, so they will be fully rested, too. Although. they have more players with international duties.

Man City win EFL Cup Final

On Sunday 31st March we played Man City in the EFL Cup Final at Wembley in front of a crowd of 89,953 without our captain, Ben Marshall, who got injured in training and will be out with a groin strain for a couple of weeks. Duelund replaced him.

After a nervous start we actually played one of our better games of the season, but Man City simply proved too strong for us, as was to be expected. Still, it was just the kind of experience that our lads needed and we have nothing to be ashamed of!

Man City set their stall out to attack and we were immediately under pressure. Our lads were clearly nervous and when Agüero looked to play the ball past Martins Indi he had his shirt pulled by our defender so a free-kick was awarded. Agüero lined up the free-kick and struck the ball, but the shot took a deflection of the wall and Besic took control of the loose ball.

Next, Stones squared the ball from the right and Fernandinho hit a hopeful looking shot, but László did well to get his fingertips to the ball. However, Gündogan pounced on the rebound and scored the early opener!

That did not help our lads to get less nervous. Agüero almost scored when he struck the ball with fury but he could not control the shot and it went wide.

Sterling tried a low drive next, but he sent the ball inches wide of the goal. Agüero tried a header but László saved and deflected the ball clear. And so, as the clock ticked on, we slowly recovered ourselves after conceding that early goal and at half-time we were still only 1-0 down.

In the second period Agüero rifled in a dipping shot at goal from 20 yards out, but László did well to parry it and we slowly gained more confidence. Chirivella hit a speculative long-range shot, but he put it wide. Even so, we still had some hope. So we brought on two substitutes, Chalobah and Wahlqvist for Nyambe and Henley, but barely two minutes later Agüero passed the ball right to Fernandinho who passed it into the area looking for the run of Sterling. And Sterling controlled the ball well and scored!

That second goal decided the match, although Fekir actually seemed to manage a late consolation, only it was ruled out as Lens had strayed offside.

So we lost the Final, but we left Wembley with our heads up high! Ferenc László especially made a huge impression on the crowd, but in fact our whole team performed quite well!
    Spoiler!

So our dream is over. We can now fully concentrate on the Premier League again and that is just what the club needs right now!

There are still eight League games remaining and every single one of them is important. Especially the so-called 'easy' games as we will have to play some really tough opponents at the very end!

Nooooooooooooooo! I'd hoped you would pull off a shock but Man City clearly still too strong at this stage of the game.

Focus on getting that top 4 spot and it will still be a great season.

The new GK continues to impress, he'll give you a tough decision to make next season in deciding if Steele continues as your number 1.

It's indeed very hard to know who our number 1 should be. Steele is considered one of England's best goalkeepers, but László is playing brilliantly as well.

Wow - helluva crowd - I wonder how many Blackburn took?

No shame in that when you see man City's Team -

As Man City in 2nd would this guarantee you a Euro spot or does that only happen in FA Cup?

Question - why did you bring on 2 defenders on 65 mins? Nyambe having a storming game (OK he was on a yellow card) but a goal conceede 2 mins later - poor managerial decision? Cannot see what 2 defenders would give you by bringing them on?

All top half teams in your final 5 games - could be a tough run in but decent results could be crucial in putting you ahead of them!

Yes, the yellow card for Nyambe and Henley was not playing well enough. He was the weakest link in our solid defence! Didn't you notice that?

He had a "6" and you were losing - would have changed things in MID/STR if anything!

Yeah, to bring on Grimes for Chirivella would perhaps have been a better choice.

Goalless draw at The Hawthorns for lacklustre Rovers

We had to recover very quickly to play West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday 3rd April but it was hard to refocus for our lads. They seemed uninspired and the match ended in a disappointing stalemate.

There were precious few shots on target. Nyambe was brilliant. He did a fantastic job marking Tyler Roberts who was eventually replaced by 18-year old striker Russel Borg who, like Roberts, did not produce a singe shot on goal! So Steele had little difficulty keeping a clean sheet.

However, our attacking line was not very effective, either. We even brought on Grimes to replace Chirivella but that did not make any difference either and so a goalless draw was the very disappointing result.

A game to quickly forget. We shall have do a lot better when we play Stoke City at Ewood Park next!
    Spoiler!

At least we are still in fifth position, but we should have won today to keep up with Crystal Palace who managed to beat Liverpool (1-2) at Anfield!

    Spoiler!

So there are seven games remaining, starting with the home game against Stoke City in just three days.

We have had a lot of extremely demanding matches against some of the very best Premier League teams lately and we have done exceptionally well, but now we somehow need to find the inspiration to motivate us when we play against teams like West Brom and Stoke!

After all, it is not as if they will be easily beaten by us.
    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Besic and Steele have been selected in the English Premier League team of the year. And both players have long-term contracts with our club!

    Spoiler!

    Good work by the duo

Disappointing result, hopefully it won't take long for the players to bounce back and earn a top 4 spot.

    Another disappointing stalemate for Rovers

On Saturday 6th April we played Stoke City at Ewood Park in front of a crowd of 36,211 and we played we more inspiration and passion than in the away game against West Brom, but once again the match ended in a very disappointing goalless draw.

And what's more, Steele had to go off injured! But László did not disappoint us.

Stoke have Lallana, Origi and Arnautovic and they created more scoring opportunities than we did, but as a team we performed well enough this time. Nyambe, Flanagan and Besic were in top form so our defence was as solid as ever.

And when Steele picked up a knock and had to go off László replaced him and he played brilliantly again. The same goes for Wahlqvist who replaced Martins Indi in the second half. So our defence definitely was not the problem. We just did not score and we did not nearly create enough chances. We brought on Bilal for Lens (who was not quite fit) and Bilal played decently but Duelund and Lens were the only ones to produce a shot on goal as we lacked the creativity to break through Stoke's defence.

So László played well and he kept a clean sheet, but it was Nyambe who was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

We dropped to sixth place after this second goalless draw in a row. We're in quite a fascinating race for European qualification, but we do need to start scoring goals again or we might drop out of the race.

    Spoiler!

Our next match will be at Bournemouth and then it's Swansea at home. And we just cannot afford to drop any more points!

    Steele or László?

With Steele being injured Ferenc László will get more game time. The big question on many people's minds is: Which of the two is the better goalkeeper?

Steele has done so well over the years and he has recently been selected in the Premier League team of the year again. Like good wine, he just gets better with age!

On the other hand, László has performed incredibly well in our Cup games and he does deserve a chance. It's a very hard choice so we have asked our coaches for their opinion and this is what they had to say.
