Chelsea prove too strong for Rovers

On Sunday 3rd November we played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and we quickly found out that yes, they do have a world class team!

With Batshuayi, Messi and Eder as their strikers our makeshift midfield and defence stood no chance.

The Blues were much better than us - much more aggressive and they have that individual class. With just two minutes on the clock Field headed the ball out left to Ki Sung-Yong who hit it first time towards Batshuayi in the area; Batshuayi found himself in some space and he let the ball drop before firing in a half-volley to put Chelsea ahead.

And some twenty minutes later Lucas put a low cross into the near post where Messi showed superb control of the ball before he smashed it towards the top corner to double Chelsea's lead.

In the second half we brought on Ak for Flanagan, who had been shown a yellow card, and sure enough, Ak delivered again when he handed us an unexpected life-line after a superb pass by Fekir. So we quickly replaced our tired wingers and brought on Lens and Vera but it was Messi who decided the match with a lovely strike to make it perfectly clear that Chelsea would not be caught.

So we played as well as we possibly could but it just was not enough.
    Spoiler!

We'll play West Brom next, but first it's Leicester City in the EFL Cup 3rd Round.

    Spoiler!

The good news is that Grimes and Martins Indi have both resumed full training. They are two of our most useful subs and we need them!

Akpoguma is still banned, of course, and Chirivella and Sisto are still injured but things are beginning to look a little better when it comes to injuries and bans, which is good considering the fact that we will be playing Schalke 04 in the Europa League 3rd Round!!

That is one hell of a Chelsea forward line. You would have needed your best 11 playing at their best to match Chelsea, so let's get over that one quickly and onto the next game.

I enjoyed my Pelforth in France and I can't complain about German beer. I'll need to find one that is local to Gelsenkirchen for the second leg. Tough draw, but not unbeatable

Chelsea are pretty good in my game - they have Messi and after Bale fell through to join my team (went over 50 players, deal cancelled, re-bid and then he chose Chelsea )

You pretty much matched them - bit that bit of quality showed for them

Wow - can't believe you lost that and still 1 point off top spot!

Another tough draw in Europa - you're going to go well to get to the latter stages of this trophy with the draws you are getting!

Good to hear a few bodies back to choose from!

Nathan Ak about to leave the club?

Nathan Ak, who has claimed to be homesick for several weeks now, may be about to leave Rovers!

After we had refused their initial bid, Aston Villa has just made a more than decent offer for our defender (aprox. 1.5M above his current transfer value!) so this time we accepted their bid as Ak is clearly unhappy at the club. His recent good performances were perhaps mostly to impress the scouts?

Be that as it may, our Dutch defender claims to be homesick so it will very interesting to see how he will respond to an offer from another English club!

And at least we will get 1.5M more than his current transfer value if he accepts the offer!

Rovers eliminate Leicester from EFL Cup

On Wednesday 6th November we played Leicester City in the EFL Cup 3rd Round in front of a crowd of just 14,009 without Akpoguma, who is still suspended, and without Chirivella and Sisto who are both still injured.

In addition we gave three of our star players - Steele, Mahrez and Fekir - rest, which gave Duelund the chance to start out as striker, with Bilal as left winger and Lens as right winger.

But even with those six squad changes (and with Grimes playing alongside Clasie again) we managed to defeat the Foxes and advance to the EFL Cup 4th Round!

We had a dream start when Duelund scored in the very first minute! It started with Besic feeding the ball ahead of Flanagan in the area. Duelund made himself available for the pass and got free in the penalty area. When he received the ball he tried a low drive and found the net! Our fans could hardly believe their eyes!

But we had bad luck as well. With barely ten minutes on the clock Flanagan picked up a knock and went off injured. Once again we have an injured defender.

As the game progressed we created some chances, but so did the Foxes. In fact, Slimani almost scored when he drove the ball in low but it went just wide. Clasie actually did score a goal for us, but it was ruled out by the linesman's flag. Grimes also fired the ball in low and hard and thus almost scored on his return form injury, but Schmeichel saved and deflected the ball clear.

The second half was uneventful and so the clock ticked on until Morrison made a dangerous two-footed challenge on Duelund in the penalty box and was shown a red card! Lens stepped up to take the kick and he made no mistake!

A solid team performance after our loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. And what's more, Duelund, with his goal and his assist, was named Man-of-the-Match!
    Spoiler!

According to our physios, Flanagan will be out for three weeks, so this is yet another setback for us, just when it seemed that our list of injured players was getting shorter.

Fortunately we have drawn Ipswich in the EFL Cup Fourth Round. Another chance, perhaps, to give some fringe players game time again. On the other hand, at this stage we don't want to risk losing the game, either!

And believe it or not, but there is more bad news! Nathan Ak stubbed his toe in training and will be out for a while as well!

With both Flanagan and Ak injured and Akpoguma still banned we only have Martins Indi as left defender. It makes you wonder how large a squad is really needed to complete a season successfully!?

Our November schedule looks rather demanding and we cannot afford further injuries. As it is, our physios are already working overtime. We shall need every able body to pad out our decimated squad!

Birmingham is a bit closer and has a direct flight to Amsterdam. Good riddance.

Losing away to Chelski isnt a biggie. Drawing Schalke in the UEFA is great! The bigger the occasion, the bigger the experience gained.

    What a small crowd

Very close game and Leicester gave it a hell of a go with 10 men

Nice to see Dueland score so early but in some respects would have been nice to see him add to it with 10 men

Nice draw for next round should see you progress and rotate

Whoa, Duelund scored! Could be the start of something beautiful for him at Blackburn

Good win there and tough against Chelsea too, as always.

Nice fee for Ake - How much was he signed for? Hopefully a good profit!

From Blackburn it is a short hop to Hull where he can get a direct Ferry to Rotterdam. Not that it matters as he wanted away and you have got a good fee to sign another defender. It looks like you will need them with that injury list building.

Nice win in the League Cup and a decent draw for the next round.

    Ak signs with Aston Villa

Nathan Ak has accepted Aston Villa's terms!

This means that Ak will leave the club in January. We originally signed him for 2.2M and he is currently valued at 3.9M but Aston Villa were prepared to pay 4.7M for the versatile, but unpredictable defender.

Meanwhile, we are expecting a new defender to join us in January. Faruk Hasan has agreed to join Rovers on a free transfer.

Hasan is a very promising 20-year-old right defender who can also play as defensive midfielder.

It is certainly a good deal for Ake, but I was expecting a bigger name than Hasan to replace him

All I can say for now is that he has some extremely good attributes and some rather low attributes. He could be a total failure and he could be a huge success. More after he has joined the club and we know more about him.
