Let's see if Mahrez is in his element now. And Matic. We have Mahrez-Clasie-Matic (or perhaps Mahrez-Matic-Clasie) and we have a very talented player in Chirivella. But we will need one or two more later as Mahrez and Matic are getting on in age.

    very good pre-season games

oooof - potentially tough qualifier but that's the way it should be if you want to get in CL!

Any major "omissions" from your 25 man CL squad?

    Good to hear.

I meant more that player 'x' is not in the squad as you had no room for him

    Rovers ready for Shakhtar challenge

All of our first team players are ready and fit for the important first game of the season against Shakhtar Donetsk. Our defence is as strong as ever. Akpoguma will start out on the bench because Virgil van Dijk will obviously be playing.

The big question is, will our midfield prove strong enough against a very strong Shakthar side?

The good news is that Shakthar's key midfielder is injured. They will have to play without Fred who is out with a gashed leg and will most likely not be available for the return match at Ewood Park either.

This summer Shakthar signed Immobile on a Bosman free transfer and he will be their lone striker as they will use a 4-5-1 formation against us. Ryan Bertrand will start as full back.

Steele got 70% of the votes!

Plus 20% of the ones who voted for Lszlo changed their minds!

Rovers hold Shakhtar Donetsk in thriller

On Wednesday 12th August we played our first official game of the season, in the Champions League Third Qualifying Phase against Shaktar Donetsk in the Arena Lviv.

It was our first official match with Fekir and Agero as striker duo and with just three midfielders. But it was a risk we had to take. Besides, we could still rely on Besic and our defence and our goalkeeper!

And we survived the thriller in the Arena Lviv! And what's more, we scored an all-important away goal!

At times it seemed like our lads had never played in any other formation! Matic especially played a fantastic game. And so did Steele and Besic while our striker duo gave the impression that they had already been playing together for years.

After a nervous start Agero produced the first shot on target but Ojeda did well to save and hold onto the ball. On the other side Milanov blasted the ball goalwards with his left foot, but Steele did well to parry it. And the next chance was for Agero again. Matic curled the ball first time into the near post and Agero lost his man and found himself with plenty of room; he smashed in low, however he put it just wide.

But then, with fifteen minutes on the clock Nyambe played the ball up towards Matic who lobbed it into the penalty area ahead of Agero. Our new striker stretched to reach the pass and tried a pot-shot at goal and scored on his debut!

So after just fifteen minutes we already had the important away goal! And the match was more or less in balance after that opener with scoring chances for both teams. But just when it looked like we would survive until half-time it was Zubkov who found the net! It began with Stepanenko who drove the ball in low. Steele did well to turn it away, but Immobile went for the follow up and struck the ball with fury! Again Steele saved and deflected the ball clear, but now Zubkov picked up the loose ball and this time there was nothing Steele could do!

The second half was also action-packed. Milanov hit a fierce shot, but he was denied by Steele who got his fingertips to the ball. A little later Agero found Besic with a low pass left. Besic was unmarked and he put some curve on the shot but he put it horribly wide. Fekir also came close when he hit a long-range shot which was well held by Ojeda. The best chance was for Stapanenko, though. He shot the ball high and hard towards goal but Steele somehow managed to parry it with his legs.

All in all, a thriller of a match, this first game of the season! We created a good number of chances against a fantastic Shaktar Donetsk side and the result is just what we needed! We held them to a draw plus we scored an away goal, which is more than enough to give us hope for the return match! However, their defence is superb and Ryan Bertrand was named Man of the Match.
    Spoiler!

So it's Crystal Palace next. Palace have Luke Shaw, Wilfried Zaha, Milik and Fellaini. And they have Nathan Ak! In January we sold Ak to Aston Villa for 4.7M and six months later, after eighteen disappointing appearances Villa sold the versatile defender for just 1.2M to Crystal Palace!

It would be great if we can keep them at stalemate or win the game. That would bring in more cash as well!

Jordan Rhodes and Lucas Joo ?! No need to send your scout, you have solid information from inside

    Mass catch up from me.

Well done on the finishing position last season and I have to say great transfer business. The defence needed a little improvement and van Dijk will bring that. Matic will play well for a season although interesting to see him in the CM position not DMC.

And Aguero. I don't care how old he is, he will still be better that 90% of the strikers in the division. I predict he will bring you 20+ goals this season and that will be a massive difference to you.

Decent draw there, Shakhtar a very tough place to play. Fully expect you to wrap it up in the second leg

What a hum dinger of a game!

Brillant enetertainment for all involved - and an away goal which could be vital

Full strength v Palace or resting players?
