    World Cup Changes

    C'mon guys.

It's been at least an hour since the announcement that the World Cup will be expanded to 48 countries.

Has anyone come up with a patch to change the game yet?

Does anyone think this will make the competition better?

Nope, just as bad as the Euro change, but in the words of Jesse J it's all about the money.

How does the tournament make more money with extra teams?
I mean we never qualify but we'll still watch it, as will the rest of the world whether they are qualified or not.

Or is it just more hotels and camps needed so the host country will see more benefit in commercial income?
If it's the host country benefiting and not the disgusting FIFA organisation that's at least one good thing, I guess.

There are 195/196 countries in the world.
So roughly a quarter of them will qualify every time.

I think 'Norn Iron' may make it more often come 2026. You'll be in a group with The Maldives and American Samoa!!
You'll get through but go out on penalties to Nauru!

Probably one for the football thread now, but more Asian teams qualifying means more money from there being invested.

This is what I'm asking though. Invested in what? Who benefits from the money invested?

FIFA, yeah hotels and other things will get money but the big money will be TV deals, imagine how much China would pay for TV rights if they were in it?

I don't mind the 42 team qualifying (gives Scotland half a chance), but why 2 going through from groups of 3 ? That just means that it is more important not to lose than it is to win. Make it just the group winners and we get attacking football that will be more interesting for the neutral (Scotland) fan. This format makes no sense.

That would make sense but you'll lose the whole round of 16 phase and no chance that will happen #allaboutthemoney

How about 2nd placed teams compete for the "World Shield" rather than the World Cup. That way you get even more games and 2 finals, an A and a B final.

16 more games as well, so more money again there, 80 games in total over the same 32 day.

Decent article on the BBC about it, says according to FIFA's own research revenue is predicted to increase to 5.29 billion for the new format, a potential profit rise of 521m.

Just been reading up about it - No change in the amount of games each team has to play in the usual format though, 7 games max.

There's still roughly the same percentage of teams in it compared to when they expanded it in the 80s (from 16 to 24) because of the fact that there are more nations in the world these days, although I do agree that it will reduce the quality of the group stage games.

Italian Serie C cup (now Lega Pro Cup) would be the perfect candidate (with some tweaking) for replacing the current World Cup. But I'd say we don't worry about it until 2022 hits. Because the first World Cup to be played in the "new format" will be 2026 and we are nine years short of that. We would have to wait and see how qualys are going to be played (because that would also need tweaking) but if your concerns are based on how to mirror the "new format" then Seria C Cup has a 1st round of 16 groups and knock-out rounds up to a final match.

24 teams qualified in 1982 from 109 in qualification, which is ~22%. There are currently 209 in qualification, of which 48 will qualify in 2026, which is ~ 23%.

Look for crowd shots from the Euro's. The 2 banks left and right of the middle of the camera shot had the fans strategically placed for the camera's (the middle generally the premium seats or media). Anything out of camera shot hadn't blocks of fans from either team. Why? Pretty much every top level sports event has about 25% of tickets for the teams playing (so 12.5% or so each) and the entire rest of the stadium is 'given' to sponsors. This is not entirely a football thing but this is how things are. That percentage is going to keep getting smaller and smaller. FIFA makes all the corporate/sponsorship decisions so charge when their event's have huge audiences. No matter how many channels you advertise on it's easier to advertise at a sports event for a fraction of the cost. FIFA know this so charge a fortune to advertise at their events. Then you have FIFA not really putting a dime into upgrading stadiums and especially infrastructure but getting all the benefits from merchandising and all the other official sponsor things they take a cut from.

With 48 teams they can make it easier to sell that this event it unmissable as an advertising and corporate platform. Plus with more teams they can target national advertisers they might not have gotten before for the likes of pitch side advertising. Money on top of money.

3 teams in group is bad- there is always one team that finishes earlier and can be outplayed, if they don't finish with positive GD. It would be better 4x12 groups and 8 better third-placed teams to advance, so almost all teams have still chances before last group game.

No. If it's 12 groups of 4 then there would be 72 group games (and realistically minimum 18 days) before the group stage is completed. And then you still have to fit in 5 rounds/32 knock-out matches.

If it has to be 48 teams then 16 x groups of 3 is best of terrible options. Something like this as you can get group stage done in around 12 days...
