Anyone have any weird managerial superstitions while playing this game? I'll give you two of mine:

I never allow my lone striker (or main scorer) to take penalties except in shootouts. No idea why, but i do.
Always immediately after kick off I change my team mentality from normal to attacking. Again, no real reasoning behind this except that perhaps its mty attempt to outwit the opposition AI.

I have a few more as well but can't think of them atm. What are yours?

Maybe not a superstition exactly, but if I'm about to make a substitution and the break in play comes when someone scores (for me or for the opposition), I'll restart the match and wait for the next break rather than making the change at kick-off

All I think I do is give my starting 11, numbers from 1-11

1 - GK
2 - RB
3 - LB
4 - CM
5 - DC
6 - DC
7 - RW
8 - CM
9 - SC
10 - FC
11 -LW

13 - Is always Sub Goalie

- Main goalie is usually #31 (after Cujo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Joseph)), #1 is rotation keeper

- Number #8 goes to my best central defender

- Number #19 and #24 are my main strikers

- I usually don't substitute a main player when he is rated '5' during a match. (if he stays 5, he will get a fine though)

- I always start looking for an other job when I created a local hero ("XY is an important player" "XY should play a bigger role at the club"). I should be the boss, not a player :)

I do the second one on away games sometimes.

I only ever sub a player when their fitness goes below 80% before the 80th minute. Never make changes (unless forced) after 80 minutes and for any other reason, even if rating is low.
I only buy players that my scouts have found and had 5 stars.
For penalties, I always select by positions. Strikers first, AM's, CM's, etc.
I always let the computer pick the captain.
Strikers always go into shooting, midfielders into skill and defenders (and DMCs) into tactics for training.
I always pick by form.
I never play anyone in reserves, they are always in my 1st team.
I always ask my coaches for a report on every player at the end of the season. If they ever say anything that isn't positive (such as useful squad player, lacks determination, highly strung, etc), then I will transfer list them no matter who they are and even if they did very well.
I never release a player if it will cost me money.

I always sub whoever has below 80% in the 60th minute.

#8 is always for my best player

#34 is always for a big strong guy (shaq)

I always stretch my toes when my team has the ball

I never assign the number 13 squad number as I think it will bring bad luck. When drinking I spark a cigarette before games and smoke during the matches. I tend to usually manage 5 or more clubs in those games.

1, 13, 26, 33 all goalkeepers numbers. ALWAYS sell players that end up with the number by mistake

9, 18, 19 all forward numbers (not as insane about players getting the numbers by accident :P)

11 left wing, 7 right wing (Giggs and Becks )

16, 4 DMC's

12 Utility defender

10, 23 - AMC's

44 new star signing (other than goalkeeper)

As I understand, originally it was:
1 - GK
2, 3 - Defenders
4,5,6 - Midfielders (where 5 became a third defender in WM formation)
7,8,9,10,11 - Forwards from right to left (where 8 and 10 became attacking midfielders in WM formation, 7,9,11 staying up)

U shud just sell that player... get him out the door...

I change team after 3-4 seasons anyway :)
Just that when the board thinks there is someone who is more important, I leave earlier (even after 1 season).

Béla Guttman is usually the one I try to follow. Never more then 3 years at the same club!

When he was at Timisoara, the president told him to play a certain player no matter what.
He replied that Mr.President can sit on the bench, because he already knows the basics of management it seems and handed in his resignation :D

Whatever happened to the legendary Kispesti? They were the army team weren't they in the 1950s? Puskas, Kocsis etc played for them in the famous Hungarian team which beat England, if I'm not mistaken. My relatives are from Hungary but they've never satisfactorily explained it to me..

Actually he won two Champions league titles two (both with Benfica).
He was really a strange fellow, arrogant as hell :)

When that hungarian team lost the final in 1954, Bern, the athmosphere surrounding them was pretty much changed to opposite, also a few players (Puskás - Real Madrid, Kocsis, Czibor - both Barcelona) didn't came back to Hungary (they were playing abroad during the 1956 revolution against the sovietS). This two things pretty much demoralized the players who stayed and they didn't win much in later years.
Honvéd had a second winning series in the 80's, when they provided many players to the national team.
Their lague champion titles are like this: 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 80, 84, 85, 86, 88, 89, 91, 93, it is easy to identify their two successful eras.

This sums up to the 4th in Hungary, after Ferencváros (or FTC, 28 titles), MTK (24 titles), and Újpest (or UTE, 20 titles)

Currently they are the 3rd best supported club in Budapest (after FTC and UTE), currently a mid table team. (they were never close to winning since 93, but were relegated once) Also they changed their name from Kispest Honvéd to Budapest Honvéd.

Excellent, thanks shikaka, I guess I should have known Honved and Kispest were the same club. Going to have to do some more research into this period of european football history.

When making tactical changes during the match, I normally try to avoid clicking on the tactics button while the opposition have possession. Otherwise they always seem to score.

TRUE! I also keep the cursor on the my tactics button the whole time. It's both practical and a superstition. I also don't look at the time when the opposition have possesion.

I dont like players that are only FC. Dont find they perform in SC and not keen on them in AMC either.

Always autopick numbers.

Sell a player if his AvR is below 7 at end of the season and has made at least 10 starts (I make an exception for CBs if they have over 3 tackles per game.

Sell a player if over 23 and made 5 or fewer starts and or under 15 sub appearances.

Not keen on CB/DMC combination players - never sure where to play them.

Not keen on DM/SC combination players.

Do not sell players to teams in same division

Just compare them with other players, if you check 3 or 4 players you find out the best position.
