Firhill for Thrills

“Firhill for Thrills – Johnson's for Rolls” read the famous advert in front of the old North Terrace at Firhill. It hasn't always been thrills though, god, I can testify to that, but 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of The Jags finest 90 minutes - The 1971 Scottish League Cup final.

Celtic were the opponents. Celtic, managed by Jock Stein, winners of the last 5 Scottish titles, in their 8th consecutive League Cup final and the previous season's European finalists. Thistle on the other hand were a newly promoted young side of which half of the players were part time. In previewing the match, Sam Leitch on Grandstand said “In Scotland, it's League Cup final day at Hampden Park, where Celtic meet Partick Thistle, who have no chance. “ It didn't quite work out like that.

In the ninth minute the Celtic defence failed to clear a corner and the ball fell to Thistle captain Alex Rae who struck a right foot shot from eighteen yards which screamed past goalkeeper Williams. 1-0 to Thistle! Six minutes later Bobby Lawrie collected the ball from Bone, ghosted past Davie Hay as if he was not there, and cracked a tremendous angled shot beyond Williams. When the ball swung into the box the Celtic defence staged their own version of "after you Claude". Dennis McQuade did not hang about and poked the ball home from six yards. 3-0 to Thistle! The Hampden crowd were stunned. The Celtic players looked on in disbelief and their torment was not over yet. Six minutes later Thistle were awarded a free kick midway inside the Celtic half. Bobby Lawrie took it quickly and passed to Jimmy Bone. The big centre forward couldn't believe his luck as he was allowed the freedom of Hampden to direct the ball past an equally disbelieving Evan Williams. 4-0 to Thistle, 37 minutes played !

Celtic finally pulled them selves together, but were up against a magnificent young keeper Alan Rough. It took until the 70th minute for Kenny Dalglish to grab a consolation goal for the Hoops, but it was way too little, way too late. Alex Rae was the man lifting the Scottish League Cup at the end of the game

And so to your challenge .... to recreate thrills at Firhill

lets do this shit.

04-07-12, 12:56 PM
what is "the start of each season"? the day the game updates and you get the new fixtures or the day your first game is played? and i assume that when they turn 26 during the season that is fine for that season but have to get rid of them for the coming?

04-07-12, 05:24 PM
Start of each season is the date of your first competitive game. Players must be under 25 (so 24 or less) at the start of the season but you don't have to get rid of them immediately when they do turn 25, just at the start of the next season.

Same again mate, don't forget to upload your screenies :ok:

A question: "1 bonus point is available for every match played for Thistle by a player with these surnames" means each titular (starter) or a sub can score 1 point too?

14-08-17, 09:39 AM
I'll PM Kingsley now as this was his challenge so he'll know best.

16-08-17, 08:57 AM
Kingsley has said to include sub appearances as well, I'll have a check if past results also used them when I get a chance.

Am I missing something here mate as I can only see 278 points for appearances, including sub apps?

Just seen the pic for Rae but can't read the sub apps as cut off in the screenshot.

10-09-17, 10:24 PM
The pic of Rae had a problem...
He started 13 games and had 21 sub apps.
The only way to see it is to look the cup (7) and champ (14) sub apps played above for Mark Rae...
Sorry, I don't know what happen!

10-09-17, 10:41 PM
Of course! Cheers mate.
