Are the movie industry hitting a new low?

In the last 3/4 years, i'm struggling to find a recent film a decent one.
I often see myself watching or re-watching old and/or classic movies nowadays. I'm following IMDB's top 200 in a decreasing order.
The last 5 movies i've watched, i had to press my dvd player's stop button in a couple and make an effort to see the rest until the credits.
Today I toke a peek at a divx releasing sites and all I see is crap. (appart of "The Artist")
The movie industry is killing the great stories and don't give a chance to someone blossom amongst all these "instant profit" pieces of shit.
Even Sundance festival is looking too much mainstream nowadays.

Is it only me with my pretencious taste of Cinema or are you feeling the same as I?

Still, i'm looking forward for the next Nolan's Batman series and Ridley Scott's "Prometheus".

I rarely watch movies anymore..... except for zombie movies as I know what I'm getting into before I start it.... but so many movies are a waste of time that I just don't bother.... every now and then I'll have 6 or 7 friends tell me I HAVE to see something and I'll check it out..... but that's about it... other than a few kids movies I've taken my children to I think the last movie I saw in the theatre was the final Lord of the Rings..... although I'll probably see the Hobbit if the world hasn't ended :D

Hard to find 'anything worth watching' these days I agree Luis.

The 1st film I'll probably go see this year will be Wrath of the Titans. I don't know whether that says as much about my taste in films or the quality on offer, Im inclined to go with the latter :D

Going to watch Appleseed tonight, Japanese anime film from 2004 that features in the Hadouken! video for their single - Mecha Love.

Looks very Final Fantasy-ish so might be good (hope it's dubbed )

There's a void to be filled for a few genres that seemed to have died out - the action movie being the main - the latest efforts are awful (or not cheesy enough). That said the action movie could be to us what Westerns were to our parents and that run their course.

TV programs like CSI and Bones etc. have probably had a role in ruining an action flick too. Now you look at the lead breaking a guys nose and you think 'so fake, the blood spatter is so at the wrong angle' - everyone 'knows' too much these days. I guess that's why the fantasy genre is so strong at the minute - people can't quantify or measure what it should be so they are drawn to it.

We need more films like Super 8. Solid special effects to accompany a strong and enjoyable story. Stories being the key ingredient missing from a film these days. Hence the strength in program adaptations like Game of Thrones

Cheers for the tips though Mark - Law Abiding Citizen was on over the weekend but forgot it.

Watched the 1st Sherlock Holmes (2009) last night, enjoyable flick given I hadn't much hope for it. Downey Jr and Law work well as Holmes and Watson but Rachel McAdams looks unreal as the love interest. Normally only ever seen her in rom coms or mushy shit but it was nice to see her in a different role. Made a bit dirtier I guess :D

Drive - ace :ok: Surprised it 'only' done $74m at the box office but defo in the cult film list and probably this decades Scarface, Goodfellas , Fight Club etc. Must see imo

As film plots go, comedy Iron Sky is a headline-grabber: in 1945 the Nazis went to the Moon. In 2018, they are coming back to invade Earth. No wonder since its first screening at the Berlin Film Festival, it has caused both comment and controversy.

But is the low-budget production, made by Finnish director Timo Vuorensola, actually worth the hype?

"It's a tremendously politically incorrect film," says Vuorensola. "I wanted to make something fun. We're not aiming to preach here, and we're not being offensive, but we do have a message."

The film starts in 2018, with an American landing on the Moon, staged to help secure the current Sarah Palin-esque president a re-election. The astronauts are captured by a group of Nazis, who have been hiding on the dark side of the Moon since the end of World War II.

They are plotting an invasion of Earth. This thrills the US president, who believes a war will automatically win her another term in office.
“Start Quote

The best response has been from young Germans, who have nothing to do with the Nazi era - to them, the Nazis are just historical, but it's still a big taboo subject over there”

Timo Vuorensola

"Obviously, it's got something to say about war-mongering," says Vuorensola.

"From my point of view, I am frightened by the rhetoric of international politics right now. It has echoes of the 1930s and the rise of fascism. However, it's up to audiences if they want to grab that message."

Vuorensola has a reputation as a sci-fi fanatic - he has previously made cult parodies Star Wreck V:Lost Contact and Star Wreck:In the Pirkinning. He says it's no surprise he looked to space for inspiration for Iron Sky.

"The Moon is mysterious, and I love the phrase 'dark side of the Moon'. There's an urban myth that the Nazis had a space programme which was just more than trying to launch a rocket.

"There's a conspiracy theory that the Nazis made lots of secret space experiments and whatever they built, at the end of the war, it just vanished. Did it go to the USA? The USSR? No-one knows. So a whole mythology has grown up around the subject.

"And it's not so far-fetched they could have gone to live on the Moon. Twenty years after the Nazi era, ice was found there, and algae. If you knew what you were doing, you could survive.

"Of course, I am trying to look at a crazy topic with a straight face."
Iron Sky German actor Udo Kier is the best known member of the Iron Sky cast

Vuornesola says he took a chance by giving the film its world premiere in Germany but says despite the subject matter the response from audiences there has been warm.

The film does have several German stars in it, including cult horror actor Udo Kier, who was born towards the end of the war, in 1944.

"The German cast did ask their agents to read the script before signing up, and I can't blame them. Ten or 15 years ago it wouldn't have been possible to do this film in Germany.

"It's probably still not possible if you're German. You need some distance still in order to make fun of the Third Reich.

"The best response has been from young Germans, who have nothing to do with the Nazi era. To them, the Nazis are just historical, but it's still a big taboo subject over there. I also want to make it clear that in this film, we might make fun of the Nazis, but we never, ever poke fun at their victims."
Contemporary issues

Director Timo Vuorensola: "We thought this was a topic that would be interesting"

Since its premiere in February, Iron Sky has been sold in 70 countries, including the UK, and the Iron Sky trailer has been viewed online more than seven million times - breaking records for an independent film.

Its budget was seven million euros, which considering the level of special effects needed was tiny at best. One million euros was raised online by fans.

"We managed," the director says. "I am used to making tiny films. The fans' support for the project was incredible, and actually once they had given a million, we managed to secure the rest of the budget by the more traditional means.

"Executives told us it was their best pitch in years. Well - it's a pretty simple tagline, isn't it?"

Reviews, however have been mixed. The Guardian said "nothing about this Finnish derived space-oddity quite matches the genius of its tagline".

Time Out comments: "The sight of space Nazis powering down a lunar inspired autobahn is especially memorable. The problem is the script, which at best feels like an irritatingly self-aware B-Movie pastiche."

That has not stopped Vuorensola and his production team from plotting both an Iron Sky prequel and a sequel, which was recently announced at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Will audiences still be interested?

"I hope so. Iron Sky is a contemporary film, more contemporary now than when we made it. Look at the rise of the far right in places like France and Greece.

"We've gone through it in Finland too. There's a lot of unemployment and financial hardship, and just like in the 1930s, outsiders are getting blamed.

"In the film, I put some words that the Nazi Joseph Goebbels actually spoke, and put them into the mouth of the US president. We are still speaking the same nonsense as we did then.

"Nobody escapes in this film. The Nazis are just used to reveal the true colours of all the politicians in this story."

Iron Sky is on limited release in the UK and available on DVD this week.

Was full sure I'd be writing a review on Prometheus but myself and missus disdain for 3D movies meant there wasn't a 2D showing ~9 on Sunday. Was having a look through the DVD rentals and the site also has cinema trailers. Loaded up Snow White and the Huntsman, trailer was good so we went to that.

It's a lot better than I'd thought it be. Even though Chris Hemsworth playing a guy dressed in boiled leather with an axe wasn't far removed from playing a guy in boiled leather with an hammer. There was a couple of times he lost the axe and I was expecting him to reach out and it returned him. And it to be a hammer.

Same goes for the other stereo type in the film, Kristen Stewart. A random "Where's Edward?" wouldn't have been out of place.

Decent fantasy flick all in all that could have been better with some tweaks. A lot darker than you'd expect a Snow White film. Having regular sized actors playing dwarfs was a bit of a novelty but it worked. Good performances from Bob Hoskins, Nick Frost and Ray Winstone even if a Cockney Mobster was a bit out of place.

Picked up these 5 yesterday...

Watchmen.
Shutter Island.
Slum dog Millionaire.
Bad Lieutenant II.
Hot Tub Time Machine.

Only seen Watchmen so far, good not great, a solid 6.5.

Prometheus - 8/10

It was never going to live up to the hype for me, it leaves many questions unanswered but also paves the way for a sequel or two on the lead up to "Alien". There's a few "Easter Egg" moments in there, and again Michael Fassbender is superb.

I'm not going to give away too much, but this isn't a suspensful movie, more of an action packed Sci-Fi film, the Space Jockey myth is also dechipered.

x2 - I really liked Monsters, I think as it was just the 2 of them venturing across a quarantined Mexico it added to the suspense. Not a bad debut film from a bloke who did it all for about £7k

Been watching a lot of movies lately, since the summer means rubbish/reruns on TV. Me and the missus especially enjoyed;

Anger Management (Jack Nicholson/Adam Sandler/Marisa Tomei) - hilarious, one of the best comedies ever imo.

Frequency (Dennis Quaid/Jim Caviezel) - one of the most original movies I`ve seen, but you gotta like Sci-Fi to enjoy it.

Silence of the Lambs (Jodie Foster/Anthony Hopkins) - a classic thriller, it was some time ago we had seen it. Cant wait to watch Hannibal/Red Dragon/Hannibal rising now.

The Skeleton Key (Kate Hudson) - creepy strange stuff, just what we love.

The Manchurian Candidate (Denzel Washington/Meryl Streep) - gotta love these x-files-like government conspiracies.

Even when I switch my dns and use the American stuff the content is still well old. It's roughly two or at least one full season behind In every show im interested in, plus the movies arent new at all.

I'm someone that downloads tv shows the day they come out in America and movies as some as they're available on DVD, so it's understandable how it'd be no use to me but still worth the six quid a month to someone else.

I've enough overheads at the minute anyway tbh without adding what would be basically a unnessecary luxury.

I feel like I'm turning into my Dad more and more cos I've begun to say 'Oh yeah, I've seen that one' and more than likely only seen a trailer when I actually get around to watching the movie :D Don't think anyone has seen but not seen more films than him. Especially since he falls asleep after about 10 minutes of every film

I started doing the same when I first came across imdb, created an account and gave ratings to films which I think was saved into a list of films in your account - Haven't touched it in years though :(

Yawn. Another USA made shit apocalypse movie. Zzz. :P

Not that I have anything against this movie personally. Just looking at USA Hollywood movie industry and the shit they have produced about zombies/disasters in recent years. Sadly, all looks same to me, despite cracking crew playing in them :(.

Have been following this for a while after I read the book, which is a cracker.

Apparently it's been 1 disaster after another on set, running about 18 months behind schedule, the script has had to be re-written a few time's so that now it is nothing like the original story.

Will still be watching it though, love a zombie flick :ok:.

Well it should be called "Attack of the super-crazy-fast CGI Zombie Things"... I'm a huge fan of the book and from the trailer it looks like Brad Pitt's company bought the rights so they could use the name... nothing I saw looks anything like the book I've read countless times....

Might still be a good film but I think they are only calling it World War Z to attract the fans of the Max Brooks novels rather than actually making a film version of his story...

End of Watch - What a great movie, 2 LA cops film their daily routine in South Central LA, only to get on the wrong side of a Mexican Cartel after making some disturbing discoveries. I have to say Michael Pena/Jake Gyllenhaal put in two great performances and the build up to the end is superb

8/10 (better than Street Kings/Training Day)

The Hobbit - 8/10

If you liked the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy you'll know exactly what to expect, it takes a while to get going until they leave the shire but after then its get very interesting, only trouble is you have to wait 12months for part 2. Suprised to see Jimmy Nesbitt and Sylvestor McCoy in it.

I watched it in 3D at 48FPS which was unusual at the start as some scenes felt like they were playing on my PS3 at 1.5x  but the action/CGI scenes are great.

Quick summary of recent films i've watched over the Christmas/New Year period.

Django Unchained - 10/10 - cannot recommend this enough, Christopher Waltz again is the main man, but Jamie Foxx, Leanardo Di Caprio and Samuel L Jackson are all almost as good. Just go and see it!!!

The Sessions - 8/10 - quite enjoyed it, true story and Helen Hunt is quite a MILF!

House at the end of the street - 3.5/10 - I love horror films but this was a yawnfest

Compliance - 7/10 - Enjoyable true story and I mean it when I say this would only happen in America

Life of Pi - 8/10 - Despite my initial reservations, found it engrossing, CGI was good but the ending made me feel a little cheated

Lincoln - 4/10 - WTF, completely different to what is made out in the trailer film is about 2hrs 30mins of politics and 1min of action sequences.

The Impossible - 8.5/10 - Good film, definitely worth a watch.

Zero Dark Thirty - 7/10 - After a dull opening 20mins, the film gets very interesting it's more like a good TV drama/documentary on the hunt for Bin Laden.

Taken 2 - 5/10 Very poor dumbed down sequel made to a very good film. 12A says it all, and I like the way some 18yr old girl can walk brazenly along the rooftops in Istanbal and lob grenades in broad daylight casually. That wouldn't happen in Merk's town!!!
