http://s6.postimg.cc/9leqgksb5/Ronald_Koeman_2014.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

In 2011 Feyenoord hit rock bottom and ended in a miserable 10th position. Then Ronald Koeman came.

With Koeman as coach (2011-14) Feyenoord were runners-up in 2012, third in 2013, and runners-up again in 2014.

But the fans want more! After all, it's been 15 years since Feyenoord won the title, back in 1999.

But Koeman left for Southampton and what's more, he took Graziano Pelle with him!
So how will Feyenoord do without Koeman - and without Pelle?
Not to mention De Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi, the two key defenders who went to Lazio Roma and FC Porto.

So Feyenoord wisely approached Samsami who said he would try and make them the Dutch champions again.

And that is what this whole story is about. Can Feyenoord once more become the club that rules in the Netherlands? The club that wins league titles and Dutch cups? The club that is feared even by Ajax and PSV?

Perhaps Feyenoord can even achieve some success in Europe in the process. But first and foremost, can Feyenoord win Dutch trophies again???

Will look out for this - surely a realistic challenge but interesting to see the journey

Well, it's a two year plan. Or three. Rome wasn't built in a day, you know.

And not too many top players want to join Feyenoord, nor do we have much money, so let's first see what we've got:

http://s6.postimg.cc/4rzkpgl75/starting_tactic.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Lots of talented youngsters there, at least.
There's Boetius and Vilhena, both attacking midfielders. And there's Kongolo and Van Beek, the two central defenders.
All of them play for the Holland under-21 team. So if we can keep them we have a good future ahead of us.

And we have experienced players: El Ahmadi, Toornstra, Clasie (wanted by all of Europe) and of course Kenneth Vermeer, the surprise goalie who came from rivals Ajax Amsterdam for just half a million pounds - and they did not like it one little bit!

Nelom (DL) is okay, too, but Wilkshire is getting on in age, so we shall have to be on the lookout for a new right defender.

And we have no decent striker! Colin Kazim-Richards is really an attacking midfielder and the only real alternative, Mitchell te Vrede, is not nearly good enough while Manu and Achabar are limited strikers, too.

Also, the squad lacks depth. We have Lex Immers if Boetius or Vilhena would disappoint us, but other than that it's only more youngsters with Bilal Basacikoglu as the most promising one.

So the first year will be a test year with two main goals: First of all to see how well they perform, and secondly, to see if they want to sign new contracts.

After that we will have to buy some new players: At least a striker and a right defender to replace Wilkshire.
And if Clasie does leave, we will have to replace him, too.

samsami
30-12-14, 09:22 AM
At least both Van Beek and Kongolo immediately signed new contracts!

These four we cannot afford to lose. They all have contracts now, so let's hope they don't become unhappy and want to leave!

samsami
30-12-14, 02:17 PM
The first year the lads will have the chance to prove themselves. Nobody will be quickly replaced by new players.

And so far, so good. Although PSV is already getting too far ahead.

Kazim-Richards, who is on loan anyways, will have to be replaced. That much is already clear.
He cannot make the fans forget Graziano Pelle.

We are considering considering approaching Aston Villa for their Czech striker, Libor Kozak.

http://s6.postimg.cc/npodu73o1/libor_kozak.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Van Beek and Kongolo, on the other hand, are managing well. They almost make us forget De Vrij and Martins Indi already.

Good luck :) WE hope to read an amazing ride to the top of the world!

samsami
30-12-14, 06:25 PM
Well, the amazing ride to the top of the world starts with the runway: Season One.

Then, and only then, the real excitement can begin, the take off: Season Two.

The question, of course, is: how high can we get?

Here's the end of the runway:

http://s6.postimg.cc/60e9jlydt/firstyear.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

We got to the end of the runway in a rush, but hold on to your chairs as we're about to take off because from now on it will be one step at time!

And it better be good, because the fans are already grumbling and saying that we are the eternal runners up, always one step behind either Ajax Amsterdam or PSV Eindhoven.

samsami
30-12-14, 06:33 PM
The good news is, we have signed him! Libor Kozak!

http://s6.postimg.cc/npodu73o1/libor_kozak.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

He will replace Kazim-Richards who was suspended a lot and scored little. Most goals came from our midfielders.

The fans can finally look forward to goals again!

RuiEsteves

With a single-striker tactic this could indeed make a huge difference! how many goals have your AMC and MC's scored during season 1?

Redknapp69
30-12-14, 10:05 PM
Solid enough season there mate!

I'm predicting you win it next season!

samsami
30-12-14, 10:12 PM
The first season we conceded fewer goals than any other team. But three teams scored more than we did.
And yes, most goals were scored by Toornstra, Vilhena and Clasie, all attacking midfielders.

And more good news! For next season we managed to sign Johannes Geis from Mainz.
An extremely talented young player, or so it would seem. They hated to lose him so he ended up costing us 7.25M!

http://s6.postimg.cc/97w8jbioh/Johannes_Geis_do_Mainz_05.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

As a D/DMRC he will immediately replace Wilkshire (DR) - our weakest link. In addition he can fill in for El Ahmadi (DM) when needed, as well as for either of our central defenders. So he should play in virtually any match this season!

All in all we spent 14.5M for Kovak and Geis and we are now ready for season #2.

samsami
30-12-14, 10:23 PM
Here's the squad, then, for season #2:

http://s6.postimg.cc/qag6chowh/squad.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Nobody left the club after last season, except Kazim-Richards and Te Vrede, both of our strikers, so we only have Kozak as striker now, but Vilhena can fill in for him when needed since we had a special training program for him last season!

We even managed to keep Clasie somehow!

samsami
31-12-14, 08:24 AM
The Take-Off

After a friendly against Sparta Rotterdam (2-0 with goals, remarkably, by Kozak and Geis) we received bad news:
We will be facing Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League Qualifying Leg 3. That could hardly have been worse!
Their star player, Brazilian forward Hulk, earns 300.000 a month!

Our fans are still talking about how last season was simply 'more of the same' with a good enough result but no prizes. Being the runners up doesn't feel good to them anymore. Second best for a team of Feyenoord's reputation is simply not good enough. It's been 15 years since we last won the title, etc. etc.

Hopefully Kozak will come through for us in St.Petersburg - and in the return in Rotterdam!

samsami
31-12-14, 01:27 PM
A sensational game in St. Petersburg!

http://s6.postimg.cc/t35925gsx/Wow.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Not Clasie (our star player), not Kozak (our new striker), not Geis, but El Ahmadi was the Man-of-the-Match!

And all of that after the early red card for Vilhena! El Ahmadi scored in the 49th minute!

What a start of the season!!!

Redknapp69
31-12-14, 07:49 PM
A real chance to qualify!

But us that what you want if going for league?

Extra money though I guess?

Do you not have enough players to fill the bench?!

samsami
01-01-15, 09:11 AM
Well, the bench is filled with mediocre players  but for now we're enjoying the success.
Maybe naive, but who cares!

The first league match of the season at home against De Graafschap is an easy one, although Boetius is injured and Immers has to take his place.

We beat De Graafschap 3-0 with goals by Toornstra (2) and El Ahmadi.

This was immediately followed by an away-win against Vitesse Arnhem: 0-2 with goals by Immers and, yet again, El Ahmadi.

That's 6 points in the bag.

No goals by Kozak yet, but both he and Geis are performing well enough.

So now it's getting ready for the return match against Zenit!

samsami
01-01-15, 11:48 AM
Feyenoord qualify for the CL!

http://s6.postimg.cc/4k2r1gvgx/zenit.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

We did it!!!

And once more El Ahmadi scored while Bilal Basacikoglu (subsititute for Vilhena who was suspended after his red card in St. Petersburg) scored the other goal. Geis was the Man-of-the-Match.

We will now be facing Toulouse, Man City and Galatasary. At least that means money!
And we might have a chance against Toulouse and Galatasaray.

Of course what the fans really want is the title but for now they are more than happy.
In fact, Koeman never succeeded in making Feyenoord qualify for the CL so it feels really good!

Redknapp69
01-01-15, 08:50 PM
Congrats on the league start and the CL qualification!

Decent CL group as well so a chance to progress!

samsami
01-01-15, 11:09 PM
Initial unexpected and huge success

We have really taken off now!

In the Premier League we beat Heracles 6-0 and then PEC Zwolle 0-2 (with Kozak finally scoring a goal). And we won five games more without conceding a single goal yet. This is totally incredible and unheard of!

http://s6.postimg.cc/4hs2646kx/clean.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And it doesn't stop there! In Europe we beat Toulouse in France and next we beat both Man City and Galatasay in Rotterdam, albeit by the skin of our teeth.

For now, at least, nobody talks about Koeman anymore!

http://s6.postimg.cc/jf0j74jtd/CL_3games.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Of course we know very well that this cannot last, but none of the fans seem to realise that.

Redknapp69

Motoring along! Another good result in CL should see qualification sorted

Ajax already dropped points so you have a nice cushion on them

The First Signs of Trouble

Thinking that we were invincible we went to Turkey only to be beaten 2-1 by Galatasary (their first win).

Not to worry, we still have 9 points out of four games, but next thing we tied our Premier League game at FC Utrecht 2-2 where they scored in the very last minute and where we conceded our first two goals of the season.

This was followed by an impressive 3-0 win against Toulouse at home, but followed by a very disappointing 2-1 loss at FC Dordrecht. A game that we should have won without any problem.

So is our busy schedule beginning to demand its toll?

samsami
02-01-15, 10:29 PM
Feyenoord survive in Europe

With the European games apparently giving our players supernatural strength we managed to keep Man City at 0-0 in Manchester!
On the other hand this match did not matter anymore, of course.

http://s6.postimg.cc/vw76uaez5/qualify.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So the next important thing was the draw for Phase Two of the Champions League.
And this is the impressive result:

http://s6.postimg.cc/8jdqpio9d/Draw_CL.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

With Juventus, Man Utd and Real Madrid as opponents we have one tough schedule ahead of us!

Redknapp69
03-01-15, 04:59 AM
Congrats on topping the group!

Bitch of a draw for next round :(

How many points ahead in league?

samsami
03-01-15, 10:14 AM
More success for Feyenoord!

We managed to tie our home game against Man Utd (2-2) with a little bit of help from de Gea and from the ref.

http://s6.postimg.cc/nhw5jy3bl/manutd.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Then, after the previous two disappointing league matches, we barely beat Willem II 1-0 (with a goal by Kozak).

And then it's Ajax in Amsterdam. Arguably the toughest game in the season.

http://s6.postimg.cc/f26l2g0gh/ajax.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Two goals by Jordy Clasie! Where would we be without him? But what's wrong with Kozak???

http://s6.postimg.cc/a294uhutt/ajax2.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

For some reason we seem to play better against strong opponents then against weak opponents.
What can we do about that?

samsami
03-01-15, 10:18 AM
New problems for Feyenoord...

http://s6.postimg.cc/qskijtt8x/clasie.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

That was to be expected, of course.

http://s6.postimg.cc/qid00hemp/frustrated.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And Clasie's reaction is normal so what can we do? As it is we're lucky to still have him.

But if we let him go then it's no telling who will be next. Possibly Sven van Beek:

http://s6.postimg.cc/viag8fk9d/Van_Beek.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

samsami
03-01-15, 08:50 PM
Mixed Results

With a hat-trick by Toornstra we beat AZ 5-2 in Rotterdam.

This was followed by a 2-1 loss at Juventus.
We played well but the loss was only to be expected, of course.

http://s6.postimg.cc/5k6u2ees1/juventus.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The good thing is, though, that we did beat FC VVV 3-0 after the loss against Juventus.
Geis scored two goals (!) and Kozak scored the other one.

That leaves just four more games before the long January break.

And we really cannot keep Clasie much longer....

samsami
04-01-15, 11:06 AM
Feyenoord loses points

The last four games before the January break start at Heerenveen where we lose two points.

http://s6.postimg.cc/wrx0mrp3l/Heerenveen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The next game, in Rotterdam, is against Emmen, who are fighting against relegation.
Thanks to our attacking midfielders we win that game without any difficulty.

http://s6.postimg.cc/pant7jzkh/Emmen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

But now we seem to be losing momentum and we are beaten by Vitesse Arnhem in our next home game!

http://s6.postimg.cc/8pg6rw8gh/Vitesse.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And, finally, we lose two more points in our last game of the year, away at Heracles.

http://s6.postimg.cc/cac2b4d01/Heracles.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So that's just 5 points out of 4 games. Looks like our squad badly needs a break.
Particularly Kozak, who did not score a single league goal in December.

The good news is that we are still first in the league, no less than six points clear of Ajax Amsterdam who seem to be struggling as much as we do. In fact, it is actually the recent away win in Amsterdam (with Clasies two memorable goals) that accounts for the current six point difference!

http://s6.postimg.cc/5xwx1a9xt/League_Table.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Feyenoord topscorers:
Toornstra 11, Clasie 8, Vilhena 7, Immers 5, Geis and Kozak 4, El Ahmadi 3, Boetius 2

But there's some bad news coming very soon that will thoroughly spoil many people's holidays!

Redknapp69
04-01-15, 03:54 PM
Looking good even though you had a dip in form

samsami
04-01-15, 04:06 PM
Jordy Clasie leaves Feyenoord!

Of course it could not be avoided. Clasie had told us last year already that he wanted to leave if he would get an attractive offer and we had told him that he would be free to go then.

And it was clear that the time has come now. Clasies thoughts were obviously elsewhere all of December as he had not scored in any of our four games when the rumours started:

http://s6.postimg.cc/yrdme6jf5/Clasie.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

It would seem that virtually every major club in Europe is interested in Clasie!

http://s6.postimg.cc/vn2yhe2mp/Clasie2.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

In the end it is Inter who get Clasie, albeit for less than we had hoped to get for him - quite a bit less, in fact, than what Liverpool had offered just recently.

http://s6.postimg.cc/dvrc2xn81/Clasie3.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So now we need to rely on Lex Immers and the young, but highly talented Balil Basacikoglu.

We could obviously try and buy an expensive new player to replace Clasie, but that would only make Basacikoglu unhappy.
Not too mention Immers, who has already been complaining that he gets to play so little while he scored 5 goals already.

Redknapp69
04-01-15, 10:26 PM
Why didn't you keep him? (Assuming he's under contract and why care if he is unhappy?)

samsami
05-01-15, 08:54 AM
Clasie is too good for Feyenoord. He deserved a good contract with a European top team.
It's realistic.
Besides, they paid us reasonably well for him.
And we care about how he feels at Feyenoord :)

samsami
05-01-15, 08:56 AM
AZ knock Feyenoord out of the Cup!

With Clasie left for Inter and with Toornstra's injury both Immers and Basacikoglu had a chance to play against AZ for the Dutch Cup.
In addition, El Ahmadi was on international duties for Morocco so the squad for the game against AZ looked like this:

http://s6.postimg.cc/3prxbfhld/Cup_Squad.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Unfortunately Immers hardly had the chance to make the fans forget Clasie because he got injured in the game.
We are beginning to realise that the squad may lack depth.

Kozak again failed to score and fans are beginning to wonder why we bought him if he does not score more than Kazim-Richards did.

Impressive performance so far. Ronald Who ? It looks like you are building a team based on defensive strength rather than blitzing goals, which is probably why you do better against good teams (set up to counter attack). I like that you are being realistic with transfers and I hope that you can maintain that when things get tough.

samsami

Feyenoord recover

After the December dip and after just having been knocked out of the cup by AZ, the big question is:
Can Feyenoord get back on track and win the title? After all, we do still have that six point lead.

The first February game is away at FC Emmen, one of the weaker teams in the league.
We are still missing El Ahmadi; Toornstra is back from his injury better and stronger we trust, but Immers is injured so Basacikoglu will play again. And this time Kozak did score and was even announced the man-of-the-match!

http://s6.postimg.cc/ot1uj6or5/Emmen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And we go on to win the next game as well, at home against PEC Zwolle.
Not the most difficult opponent, but every win helps at this stage.
The red cards help, too, by the way!

http://s6.postimg.cc/624imrjkh/Zwolle.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Unfortunately, Ajax also won both of their games so the situation at the top of the table remains the same,
while Feyenoord faces Real Madrid in the Champions League twice. First at home and then we have to travel to Madrid!

samsami
06-01-15, 08:41 AM
Feyenoord vs Real Madrid

In our third and fourth game in Phase Two of the Champions League we play Real Madrid, first at home.

And they teach us a football lesson in the first 45 minutes! But after that we manage to come back and even score a goal.
Of course it's not enough, but the fans don't complain.

http://s6.postimg.cc/6g5umd3o1/Madrid.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The game against Real Madrid, however, was followed by a shocking loss at De Graafschap.
Obviously we are playing too many games right now for this young squad.

http://s6.postimg.cc/y4tvg05ht/shocker.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

In the meantime Ajax takes advantage of the situation by beating Willem II (2-0) and getting three points closer.

And there is no time to think about it. We have to fly to Madrid for the return match against Real Madrid.
And we don't hardly want to play that game anymore. Although, for the youngsters it will be a fantastic experience.
But if it means losing more points in the league games and the title going to Amsterdam....

But... to everyone's surprise the game in Madrid turned out to be another shocker!
One that the fans are not likely to quickly forget.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ngq4h5vip/shocker2.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Of course it's not enough to qualify for the Quarter Finals, but it's a game the fans will cherish for a long time.

http://s6.postimg.cc/weaueinyp/CLGroup.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Still, because of our lost game to De Graafschap and with Ajax beating Willem II we only have a three point lead in the league now.
And what's more, our next game is against Ajax Amsterdam and the week after that we will be facing PSV in Eindhoven!
These two games will be crucial!

Predictions anyone, for these two clashes?

A) Feyenoord - Ajax
B) PSV - Feyenoord

Feyenoord and Ajax clash

With our heavy schedule and Ajax catching up slowly but surely, our home game against Ajax is crucial.
Nobody has forgotten the away match with Clasie's two wonderful goals, but of course Clasie is not playing for us anymore...

It's good that we have no injuries and nobody is banned for this match so we start the game with our regular squad.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ee1na4vrl/Squad_Ajax.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And it's Immers, of all people who scores the first goal!
However, Ajax manage to equalise just 9 minutes later.

http://s6.postimg.cc/y9xmpocsx/Ajax_Draw.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And so this crucial game ends in a draw.
Not good, but not bad either as we do keep our three points lead now.

So just when we are playing two of the most crucial games of the season, another player tells us he wants to leave.

http://s6.postimg.cc/j2hn5bky9/Kongolo.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

We will first try and talk with him and offer him a better contract.
He hasn't played for us nearly as long as Clasie had so perhaps we can convince him to stay on.

Meanwhile, the game in Eindhoven, like the one in Amsterdam against Ajax, is a major challenge for us. PSV won the title last year and even though they are having a disappointing season this year nobody can realistically hope to beat them in Eindhoven.

And yes, again we take the lead, and again our opponents score the equaliser.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ilwfivx75/PSV.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And because Ajax beat Vitesse (3-2) we are now only one point ahead of them!

Will we still win the title? Or will it be another season like the three years with Koeman as coach?

Feyenoord picking up steam in March

Our schedule is still very heavy because we have to play two more European games.
But hopefully those two games will help our youngsters develop into mature players!

We travelled to England without much hope and indeed, we had no chance against Man Utd while El Ahmadi receives a red card in the final minute of the game. So our best player is now banned for the last European match as well.

http://s6.postimg.cc/9dmqlyuhd/Man_Utd.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Fortunately our youngsters recovered very quickly this time!
Without El Ahmadi (banned one league match) and without our goalie Kenneth Vermeer (injured) we still managed to destroy NAC Breda and what's more, Kozak scores two of the goals!

That was one much-needed win and a boost of confidence for the youngsters!

http://s6.postimg.cc/psgnyjcgh/NAC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Immediately after the game we hear that De Graafschap-Ajax ended in 1-1 so we unexpectedly have a three point margin again!

To be fair, that was one hell of a UCL group. Back in the driving seat domestically though. Your goal difference makes it as good as a 4 point lead.

Good battle for 3rd place with 8 teams having a realistic chance. Only 39 goals in total in the 25 Dordrecht games !

Feyenoord surprise Juventus

In the middle of the week Juventus came to Rotterdam with a team that had many substitutes.
Without El Ahmadi (suspended) and Vermeer (injured) we upset Juventus 4-0 after Ogbonno gets sent off.

Why do we suddenly get two very good results when we are expecting nothing?

http://s6.postimg.cc/wuelkqg29/Juve.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Although the game did not matter anymore this is of course great for our team's morale.
And in Vermeer's absence Hahn did very well as goalie, both against NAC and against Juventus.

Is Feyenoord ready for the title?

Right now all squad players have a very good average rating of 7 or higher!

http://s6.postimg.cc/wmvk1yuhd/ratings.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Kenneth Vermeer is still injured, though (but Hahn is a solid goalie, too).
And Kongolo is unhappy because he wants to move to a bigger club.
Also, El Ahmadi is unhappy because he thinks we need more squad depth.

Our remaining schedule:

Feyenoord are not there yet!

For the third time in a row we win our game 4-0. This time in Alkmaar against AZ!
We seem invincible at the moment! And Kozak keeps scoring goals now.

http://s6.postimg.cc/sca1raztd/image.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And because of the result of the Almelo game (Heracles 1 Ajax 1) we are now 5 points ahead!!

However, the final game in March is a bit of a disappointment.

http://s6.postimg.cc/bah7p7ky9/FCTwente.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And this time Ajax does win their game: FC Emmen 0 Ajax 2
So it's a 3 point lead again.

There's some more news, too.
Kongolo definitely wants to leave at the end of the season. He refuses to sign a new contract.

http://s6.postimg.cc/o4juwanrl/Kongolo.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Vilhena also wants to move to "a bigger club". What does he think!!?

On the other hand, the good news is that Van Beek signs a new contract!

I wouldn't have said that any of the teams interested in Kongolo are bigger than Feyenoord, but once a player gets into that state, there is bugger all you can do.

Good news is that Ajax are dropping points too. You should have some winnable games coming up.

Feyenoord struggles to stay afloat

Without Toornstra (suspended) we only barely beat Excelsior, partly because Jonathan Geis was sent off after he recklessly went in with two feet on Etock. His red card means that both Geis and Kozak (after his yellow card to-day) will be suspended in our next game against FC Utrecht.

Lex Immers, however, did very well and scored both of our goals!

http://s6.postimg.cc/h1va2e9qp/Excelsior.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

In Amsterdam Ajax beat PEC Zwolle 3-1 so nothing changes at top of the league.

The good thing is that El Ahmadi and Vermeer sign new contracts, but Kongolo will definitely leave the club at the end of this season.

Feyenoord performs below par

Unfortunately Geis has been banned for a further five games! Of course we appealed against this decision, but our request was dismissed by the KNVB who seem to "feel the ban was just and fair." Not sure where feelings come in here, but anyway, this means that Geis will miss the rest of the season now, which is bad news.

So here we are, facing FC Utrecht without both Kozak and Geis, and also without El Ahmadi who is on international duty.
And without some of our best players the squad suddenly looks less than impressive.
Especially because normally Geis fills in for El Ahmadi as DMC!

http://s6.postimg.cc/7359istzl/limited.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And it's not just on paper that our squad looked less than impressive.
On the pitch it wasn't any better. Manu did not perform well at all and we even managed to miss a penalty.
And even with Kist having been sent off we could not score a single goal.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ifmwxp901/Utrecht.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Because the important game between Ajax and PSV in Amsterdam ended undecided (1-1) we keep our 3-point lead, but we did miss a great opportunity to increase the margin with Ajax again.

Off-day for Feyenoord in Tilburg

Both El Ahmadi and Kozak are back from their suspension, but this time it's Kongolo was is banned for one match; Geis, of course has been banned for the rest of the season. Boulahrouz and Wilkshire replace the two defenders.

But for some reason we had a total off-day and for the second time in a row we did not score. After Willem II took the lead we attacked ferociously but Willem II countered well and even scored a second goal.

How come we win three games in a row 4-0 - even the away-game against AZ - and then we don't score any goals these last two games?

http://s6.postimg.cc/yo7qkx781/Willem_II.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Feyenoord score goals again!

Kongolo is back but Toornstra is suspended for one match and El Ahmadi is on international duty - again!
So with Boulahrouz for Geis (DR), Wilkshire for El Ahmadi (DMC) and Basacikoglu for Toornstra (AMR) we face FC Dordrecht, the team that has only conceded 18 goals in 30 matches and is #6 in the league, while we did not score a single goal in our previous two matches.

But supported by an enhousiastic crowd and with highly motivated substitutes the team gives it all they have got!
Boulahrouz(!) manages to score to give us the lead at half-time while Kozak scores two goals within five minutes after the break before an overzealous Kongolo is sent off in the 70th minute after going in hard on Menzo.

http://s6.postimg.cc/vlaqg2w9d/Dordrecht.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

As expected, Ajax beat Excelsior in Amsterdam (1-0) and so with three games to go anything can still happen.

http://s6.postimg.cc/fyjh2pihd/3togo.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

There is a lot of bad news, though, in this final stage of the season.
Kongolo is banned for a further three matches, so he has played his last game for Feyenoord!
Bouhlarouz, who did so well against Dordrecht, is suspended for one match after his yellow card.
Also, El Ahmadi was injured in his game for Marocco so he will miss the next match (or two).

Sleegers and Lopes Cabral come from the reserves and are really not good enough. But we have a DR-problem and what's worse, a serious DMC-problem with El Ahmadi injured and Geis suspended!

And Kongolo and Geis are not available for any of the three last games. So we need a few lucky wins it seems or the title will slip from our grasp!

I don't want to change formation at this stage. So Lopes Cabral will play DR. And Wilkshire will play DMC.

Feyenoord struggle against ADO Den Haag

With two inexperienced players (Woudenberg and Lopes Cabral) filling in for Kongolo and Geis, and with Wilkshire as substitute for El Ahmadi we had to face ADO Den Haag in The Hague and our team really struggled. There were no goals until Kramer scored for ADO in the 54th minute.

A second goal would have decided the game but somehow we found the strength to bounce back and Boetius scored the equaliser in the 65th minute. We tried to score another goal, but ADO's defence was too strong and their counters were very dangerous.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ougxkslw1/ADO.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

It is clear that our team is tired and not as impressive as it was early in the season when we won the first nine games in a row without conceding a single goal. Ultimately El Ahmadi was right when he complained about the lack of squad depth.

http://s6.postimg.cc/678tqvwsx/Team.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

I'm afraid you're right (both about the small squad and about the chance being blown!) although you never know...

But for that to happen we will need a solid squad or we will fail for the third time.

We had already bought Alfred N'Diaye to replace Kongolo. He cost a lot of money so he better be good!

Van Ginkel signs with Feyenoord

This time we were lucky enough to sign Marco van Ginkel!

Van Ginkel will replace Lex Immers as the central midfielder, Clasie's old position.
He should help ensure that our midfield has more control than last season, when Immers played in that role after Clasie left.
In fact, Van Ginkel may be just the right player to make the fans forget Jordy Clasie!

http://s6.postimg.cc/ylshzd5g1/Van_Ginkel.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So the squad for the third and final year is beginning to look good now.
We already know how good Geis and Kozak are. And we have reason to believe that Kozak will score more goals this year.
Van Ginkel is a winner. Promes, too. So N'Diaye is the only question mark.

The main thing now is to get more squad depth for the time when players get injured or suspended.

A good start of the season

There was not much time to celebrate. We had to start the season early, at home against Dinamo Zagreb in the third round of the Champions League qualification. The team was eager to prove themselves and while Kozak may not be another Ove Kindvall - as some of the ever-complaining fans think they need to point out with every new Feyenoord striker - he did show that he can score goals for us!

http://s6.postimg.cc/ev2m5wkwh/01_CLQ.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The crowd went wild and celebrated as if we had already won the Champions League!

http://s6.postimg.cc/5a1j2szwx/Fey_Champ.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Just days later, however, in our first league match away at Heerenveen, an overzealous Kozak was sent off after bringing down his opponent and we had a lucky escape when Boetius scored with a ferocious strike, just 13 minutes later, while Kenneth Vermeer with the help of his defenders managed to keep a clean sheet.

It's always a nasty game at Heerenveen, so to travel the long way home with the three points in the pocket feels really good!

Feyenoord without Kozak

With Kozak suspended for three (!) league games, Manu filled in for him against NEC. But Manu is a somewhat limited player and this time, too, he was not very effective, although he played reasonably well overall.

Another potential problem is that N'Diaye was the weak link in this game, just like in the Heerenveen game. He still hasn't shown what he is worth.

In the end it was Marco van Ginkel who became the match-winner. In the 32nd minute he received the ball from Geis and blasted it into the top corner. Perhaps not a very convincing win, but at least it's three points and a clean sheet again.

http://s6.postimg.cc/6qz3ewnv5/03_NEC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Then we had to travel to Zagreb (with a squad without any injuries or bans!) and guess who scored again?

http://s6.postimg.cc/e9i8njf81/04_CLQ.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So like last year we qualified for Phase 1 of the Champions League and this time we were drawn in Group G with some really interesting opponents. Definitely not an easy group if we want to qualify for the next phase.

Well done for a great start of the season with no goal conceded so far. Defense seems to be solid and midfield sorted with van Ginkel.

2 questions though :

1/ you cleared lacked depth towards the end last year, how many players have you recruited (net of departures) in interseason?

2/ your striker. Since you play with a single striker tactic this position is ultra-important in your team. Although he has scored a lot so far this season (but the red-card and the 4 games suspension is really bad), there is a feeling Kozak may not be up to standard for your team. And also if I may, you ought to have a sub who is of very high-quality since if you find youself like right now, having to play without your main striker (injury or suspension), having an average player as the lone striker is likely to cost you several points.

Other than that, great story to read! hope you make it this season!

Rui is very right, but at Feyenoord we never have more than 1 decent striker in the selection. Oftentimes not even that.

Feyenoord still struggling to score goals

We went to Breda to play NAC and this time it was Boetius who filled in for Kozak. But as it turned out this was even less of a success than having Manu play as centre forward. Boetius could not convince at all.

One good thing is that N'Diaye played his first solid game for Feyenoord.

Boeteng scored for NAC early on in the game and it took until the 61st minute for Toornstra to score the equaliser. Perhaps that would have been all we could hope for but ten minutes later Te Vrede (ex-Feyenoord) was sent off after he went in with two feet on Basacikoglu. Feyenoord stay on track...

We beat Willem II in our fourth game with Boetius once more struggling as striker, but El Ahmadi scored an easy early goal which decided the match.

The fans were hoping for a display of power but scoring remains a problem for us.

Also, N'Diaye was a disappointment again. We're still not convinced that he is the right player for us.
We need to look for another DC and then see who's the best.

Is there an Argentinian striker on the radar? Like Julio Cuz back in the day?
Will the manager stay on to see Feyenoord win the CL?

Why is N'Diaye a dissapointment ?

I see a defence, in which he is a key part, that has let in just 1 goal in 7 games. While the strikers have been misfiring, it is the defence that has been winning you these games, so to single him out seems harsh. Rumours of a rft in the dressingroom will start to leak out if you carry on like that.

Feyenoord vs Man Utd

Everyone expected a horror scene for Feyenoord, but the crowd supported the boys in a tremendous way and just like last year in the Champions League our team seems to possess supernatural strength in games against huge opponents. Virtually everyone played beyond their normal capacity. Especially our goalie and our defenders. In fact, even N'Diaye played an excellent game!

The result was a thriller that ended in 0-0 and left the fans exhilarated!!

Feyenoord does not slow down

Unlike last year, when European games were often followed by below par performances, Feyenoord played a very decent league game just days after the Man Utd match when FC Emmen came to Rotterdam, only to be beaten 3-0.

The game really only lasted 45 minutes because at that point, with all three goals already having been scored, Laghmouchi was sent off. Nothing happened anymore after the break. Our boys had done the job and tried to save some energy for the heavy games ahead of them: two European games and the match against Ajax in Amsterdam.

Manu played as centre foward again and Boetius as attacking midfielder. And indeed, Boetius performed much better in his usual, preferred role. The goals were scored by a defender (Nelom) who was the Man-of-the-Match, and two goals by El Ahmadi (DMC) which only goes to show once more that we don't have any forwards who can score goals for us when Kozak is not available.

http://s6.postimg.cc/puzaxv2s1/Emmen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Both Ajax and PSV were free this weekend.

Meanwhile we are talking with two clubs about a defender and a striker. In fact, we have already made bids for both players so there may be good news soon.

Fans have been talking about De Vrij or Vlaar returning to Feyenoord, but De Vrij is content with his move from Lazio Roma to PSV and Vlaar plays for Galatasaray right now. Both clubs want to hold on to them.

European success for Feyenoord

We went to Germany to play Borussia Mönchengladbach and initially it looked like it would be a walkover for them. Xhaka scored after 17 minutes. A second goal by Kruse after 50 minutes was disallowed by the referee for off-side, but that was very debatable. For the first time our defence seemed to have lost its grip.

But then, out of the blue, Nelom scored from a corner taken by Boetius and Kozak made the winning goal in the 85th minute after a fine cross pass by Van Ginkel.

Two days after our impressive victory in Germany we manage to sign Alexandar Mitrovic. The 22-year old Anderlecht striker signed a 4-year contract. He agreed that he will be used in a squad rotation system, at least initially.

We firmly believe Mitrovic is the striker we desperately need as substitute especially for when Kozak is injured or suspended. And he is also a great prospect for the future!

Feyenoord go to Moscow

Our next game was in Moscow, against CSKA, and precious little happened.
They had four shots on target, we three.
We did not need to win and they lacked the creativity.

http://s6.postimg.cc/v59s5naa9/CSKA.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The result is good enough for us, especially if we win the return match in Rotterdam.

But, more importantly, the very same day we signed another player! And not just any player, either!

http://s6.postimg.cc/ju74ha3f5/Bruma.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Bruma had a choice between six different clubs and he chose for Feyenoord!

What's also good is that he did not even cost us all that much...

And, ironically, two days later N'Diaye left the training with a damaged shoulder!

Ajax vs Feyenoord a real thriller!

Last year we beat Ajax in Amsterdam but that was because we had Clasie. This time our team may be stronger, but so is theirs and Bruma plays with Van Beek for the first time as central defenders so our defence is an uncertain factor.

Toornstra scores a quick goal after a low cross from Geis but after that opening goal Ajax becomes stronger and in the 32nd minute Van Rijn shows Bruma a clean set of heels and crosses the ball to Schöne who scores the equaliser. Just before half time we take the lead again when Toornstra picks up a loose ball and scores his second goal. But in the 53rd minute already it is Schöne again who scores for Ajax.

http://s6.postimg.cc/b4f3djs9d/Ajax.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The last half hour Mitrovic played for Kovak and Immers replaced Toornstra who had received a yellow card.
In the end we may count ourselves fortunate with the draw as we only had 4 shots on target while they had 6.
And our defenders were really struggling in this match against Ajax' creative forwards and midfielders.

Mitrovic Feyenoord's Saviour

We had to go to Zwolle for what should have been an easy match. After all, PEC Zwolle is currently #17 in the League.
Many fans that went to Zwolle to see the match wanted to see Mitrovic play, but they were disappointed.
But Feyenoord seemed uninspired and Kozak did not have his day, and then Boetius was sent off just before half time and things looked very bleak indeed.

After half time Toornstra had to play in Boetius' position and Mitrovic finally replaced Kozak but with Toornstra having left his original number 10 position Mitrovic was very isolated. And yet it only took him six minutes to score the much needed goal after an incredible solo!

http://s6.postimg.cc/qghvy9p75/Red.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Toornstra scored the second goal towards the end of the match.

http://s6.postimg.cc/4vctansgh/PEC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And with PSV losing 2-1 to Vitesse in Arnhem the day ended well for us!

Feyenoord fails against CSKA Moscow

With N'Diaye still injured and Bruma not registered to play in European competitions, Boulahrouz had to play as DC against CSKA Moscow. Also, Kozak had to play the whole match because Mitrovic is not registered to play, either.

However, after the goalles draw in Moscow we had no fear. We were convinced that we would win the return match in Rotterdam without much difficulty. But Feyenoord did not play well and Promes received a yellow card so he had to be replaced by Basacikoglu at half time. And as the match went on another 0-0 result seemed inevitable, until the fatal 84th minute when Vermeer could not get a good hold of the ball and let it go free only for Bueno to use the opportunity and score an unexpected late goal that silenced the crowd.

http://s6.postimg.cc/rzmguqaj5/CSKA_loss.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And with just two matches to go we suddenly don't look so good anymore now.
In fact, we could be very well eliminated in the next round if we lose at Man Utd and Borussia M win their home match against CSKA Moscow. Not an unlikely scenario.

http://s6.postimg.cc/4dvg0170x/Table_CL.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The day after we lost our match to CSKA Moscow we received news that Boetius has been banned for a further ten(!) league matches for having punched Lukoki in the match against PEC Zwolle.

http://s6.postimg.cc/sf2c1hlu9/Boetius_Ban.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

To look on the bright side, this means that our most talented youngster, Balil Basacikoglu, will now have his first decent chance to show us what he is really worth. Fans, at least, are looking forward to it!

Just two days later we had to play FC Dordrecht. It was important to win this match and this time Mitrovic got to play while Kozak had a chance to rest. Feyenoord did not seem tired though. They played remarkably well with Mitrovic scoring the winning goal just before half time with a good header. Mitrovic definitely seems to be a winner!

http://s6.postimg.cc/ro9lvpjgx/Dordt.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Bruma played well, too, as did Geis and El Ahmadi but we should have scored more than the one goal.

There are some now who say Feyenoord should play with two forwards, both Kozak and Mitrovic.
The question is, will they form a good striker partnership together?

http://s6.postimg.cc/wpgzx2qxd/Ratings.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

In the meantime NEC vs Ajax ended in 0-0 so this was another good day for us.
But there's no time to waste, we are heading for Manchester where it will be all or nothing!

Soccer Shocker in Manchester!

Knowing well enough that we had no chance against Man Utd at Old Trafford we played without fear.
And sure enough, Man Utd outplayed us!
With eight shots on goal (compared to just three for our side) it should have been a walkover for them, but our defence did very well, especially Kenneth Vermeer and Jonathan Geis, and we also clearly had more than our fair share of luck.

And just when we started to hope against hope for one point, there it was. Totally out of the blue Kozak scored from a great pass by Geis! There were some tense moments afterwards and Falcao all but equalised with a great volley but there were no more goals and Feyenoord left the home crowd stunned as they celebrated on the pitch.

Feyenoord suffer a dip

For the first time this season we made the same mistake as last year; we underestimated a weaker team. After Mitrovic (yes, again!) had scored against VVV we thought this would be another comfortable win but then Promes pushed his opponent. He was sent off and VVV scored the penalty kick and we never recovered from that.

http://s6.postimg.cc/67mp76pxt/VVV.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Promes was suspended for no less than four matches and Toornstra for one match after his yellow card so we that means we had to face FC Groningen without Boetius (9 more matches), without Promes (4 matches), and without Toornstra. Three of our four midfielders suspended!

With Basacikoglu, Immers and N'Diaye replacing them our midfield lacked the power and the creativity to deal with FC Groningen. Even though Mitrovic scored once again (!) and it looked we would get away with it, Zschusschen scored for FC Groningen in the very last minute of the match and we lost two more important points.

http://s6.postimg.cc/wv93pkvyp/Stats.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

With our current tactic we totally rely on our midfielders and three suspensions is a bit much, even though Van Ginkel and El Ahmadi played very well indeed.

http://s6.postimg.cc/pdzwad6fl/Groningen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So we lost four points in two matches and have to face Borussia M'Gladback now!

None of our players have any European bans so we played our final game in Phase 1 at home against Borussia M'Gladbach without using any substitutes. That is to say, Mitrovic and Bruma can of course not play any European games yet, so Kozak and N'Diaye played.

After the disappointing results in the league it was good to have Boetius, Toornstra, and Promes back again for this all-deciding match. And what a difference it makes to have our strongest possible midfield!!

We controlled the game very well and in the 74th minute it was Kozak who scored with a great header, which turned out later to be the only goal of the match! It almost seems wrong to replace him by Mitrovic when he scores so many important goals for us!

It's hard to tell. We have 6 good defenders and 2 very good strikers and for the midfield (4 players) we have Immers and Basacikoglu as subs. So it's better than last season but it may not be enough.

Feyenoord back to Germany!

We had a nine day break and then we had to travel to Germany already for our first match in Phase 2 of the Champions League. Borussia Dortmund has a very good reputation but they are not as good anymore as they used to be.

With N'Diaye injured (and Bruma not registered to play European games) Bouhlarouz had to play as central defender. But things went well until just before half time when 'Boula' received his second yellow card and was sent off.
After that we really struggled to keep a clean sheet.

Dortmund had a total of twelve shots on goal, nine(!) of which were on target. We only managed three. So when the referee blew the final whistle we were incredibly relieved to get away with an unexpected draw.

Vermeer was the man-of-the-match and rightly so!

http://s6.postimg.cc/4dynrnhld/Bor_Dortmund.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

There is no rest for the weary so a few days later we played Heracles in Rotterdam. Toornsta was back from his suspension, but we still have to miss Boetius and Promes and we badly needed a win after the two recent draws so a quick goal by Mitrovic or Toornstra would be nice. However, it was Linssen who scored for Heracles after barely 5 minutes! Things looked a bit bleak until Bosz put the ball in the back of his own net. With that score we were frantically looking for a second goal which did not come before half time. Instead Mitrovic received a yellow card.

So after half time Kozak replaced Mitrovic but it was not Kozak who scored, but Van Ginkel and Immers (who is disappointed that he gets to play so little) scored the third goal with a nice header.

Our next game will be at home against FC Twente.

http://s6.postimg.cc/vxqqgzc29/Table.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The main question now is, who will play against FC Twente? Mitrovic or Kozak?
Or should we have both of them play, even though that means a weaker midfield?
Especially with Boetius and Promes still suspended.
But then again, Immers and Basacikoglu are playing quite well, too.

Feyenoord vs FC Twente

After much deliberation we decided to change our tactic and have both Kozak and Mitrovic play against FC Twente.
This means we have one less midfielder now and we don't need to replace both Boetius and Promes who are still suspended. So Immers won't fill in for Promes. Just Basacikoglu for Boetius.

The crowd was extremely pleased to see both strikers and eagerly expected more goals now!

http://s6.postimg.cc/euxlwbr2p/2_FW.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And for a change we did score two quick goals instead of just one but, interestingly, they were scored by midfielders El Ahmadi and Van Ginkel!

http://s6.postimg.cc/pvxcf38pd/Twente.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Both Kozak and Mitrovic played well but neither of them scored, so was this new tactic really successful? It's hard to tell and we cannot use it in our next match against Paris SG (Mitrovic is not registered to play) but after that there will be seven league games in a row to experiment.

Kingsley

Good to see a return of domestic form and already it is shaping up for another Feyenoord/Ajax tussel for the title. I like the look of the new formation and can see Toornstra getting goals. My worry is that with both of your primary strikers playing together what happens when you have a midweek game and both are struggling for fitness. I think that this is an option, maybe something to try when you are chasing a game, but for the bread and butter (or should that be "brood en boter") games I'd rather see one "aan de voorkant"

AJ
21-01-15, 09:52 AM
I also like the single striker tactics better. One of the defining characteristics of a good manager is his ability to make tough choices. Can't Always play both strikers, they'll have to live with rotation.

The lone striker, or "de piek in de kerstboom", can be complemented by the other one if we really need to create pressure. About Toornstra, did you train him to be AM/FC?

Goodness knows what would have or could have happened but in the confusion Promes almost immediately scored his first goal ever for Feyenoord and after that PSG seem uncertain whether to defend or attack and the game petered out because we were not able to score another goal either.

2 strikers tactic is tempting but then as was said by other fans, in that case you need much more depth for the position and at least one more top-level striker! It's therefore probably wiser to stick to 1 this season, at least as long as you play European games...

Agreed. I have only 2 players for that position. Either of them injured or banned or tired means I cannot use that tactic.
I assume in Europe I can now finally register Mitrovic and Bruma. So that will give me more squad depth in Europe.

Feyenoord off to a good start for December

The first of our seven(!) league matches in December was in Alkmaar against AZ. With both Boetius and Promes still suspended, Basacikoglu and Immers had to play again and although we are much stronger than AZ and we create lots of opportunities to score, there is no goal until almost an hour into the match. But just as we are about to substitute Mitrovic by Kozak, Mitrovic manages to head the ball to El Ahmadi who scores the crucial goal! So we decide to not make any changes after all. Kozak sits down again and seems to have mixed feelings.

http://s6.postimg.cc/vd82qu3td/image.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So this is another important win for us, although as usual we do not score many goals. And the one goal that we do score comes from a midfielder.

A few days later we face Vitesse in Rotterdam. We have some catching up to do so we play two league games a week right now. Promes is back from his 4-match suspension so it's only Boetius now who is not available - and will not be for quite some time, actually. And again there are no goals before half time. And again we plan to have Kozak start his warming up. And once more we score! This time it is Toornstra.

With two more goals (both from midfielders, including Promes...) this is finally a good and solid win which should serve as a confidence boost for the team. Vitesse is a decent enough team and 3-0 is quite a convincing victory.

Feyenoord's run continues

Our next opponent, SC Heerenveen, came to Rotterdam with ex-Feyenoord striker Anass Achabar in their squad. We played very well and created some good chances and El Ahmadi scored with a fine strike.

After the break we replaced Mitrovic (who had not scored in the last four matches and was not playing well this time, either) by Kozak who seemed very inspired and scored a fine goal. After 18 games unbeaten we continue our good run!

Having said that, after Achabar scored for Heerenveen there were some tense moments again but Feyenoord withheld the pressure. Van Beek was the man-of-the-match.

http://s6.postimg.cc/z59o6z6q9/Heerenveen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

A few days later the ADO vs Feyenoord match was postponed because of the weather conditions.
Ajax beat Roda JC in Limburg and has just two less points than we do.

In the meantime we have been talking with Sunderland about John Guidetti but they refuse to let him go right now as they have only recently bought him.

By the way, Guidetti is not the only player we'd like to see return to Rotterdam. We have another option and there are already some rumours amongst the fans who this might be, but nobody knows for sure. It's just wild guesses and perhaps it's better that way...

http://s6.postimg.cc/jx769acwh/Robin_Van_Persie.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Robin van Persie returns to Feyenoord! Van Persie's wages may have been more than 50% reduced because of this unexpected move, but he said that he wants to help Feyenoord win the title.

Van Persie wants to spend the twilight of his playing career in his home city and eventually hopes to work for the club as a coach!

http://s6.postimg.cc/vzp2gro41/Van_Persie.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Most fans are delighted although some sceptics say he is too old and should have returned to Feyenoord one or two years ago if he wanted to be of any use to the club.

Dream debut for Van Persie

Our match against Willem II in Tilburg should have been a straightforward win, but Mitrovic failed to score again and our midfielders were unlucky, too. And just before half time Agustien even scored for Willem II!

So we changed our tactic and used the two strikers tactic after half time with Mitrovic and Van Persie as striker duo. And sure enough it took less than five minutes for Van Persie to score with a lovely strike! He could not have wished for a better debut!

Next we replaced Mitrovic by Kozak and that was another good move as Kozak also scored almost immediately. A second goal by Van Persie towards the end of the match was the icing on the cake.

http://s6.postimg.cc/69rx9l429/Willem_II.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

A few days later we had to play Roda JC in Kerkrade. This time we used Kozak and Van Persie as striker duo since they seem the most productive right now, while Mitrovic has not scored for quite some time.

http://s6.postimg.cc/54xv47hld/Squad2.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

However, nothing is predictable in soccer and unfortunately Van Persie got injured (after Toornstra had already scored for us) so we had to switch back to our original tactic with just the one striker.

The match ended well for us but we could have wished for a couple more goals.

http://s6.postimg.cc/pqcmw3z69/Roda_JC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The table looks good, from our perspective, but we do have to play two more matches before the January break, the first one being against PSV in Eindhoven! And Van Persie is not available for that important clash.

Disappointment in Endhoven

It looked so promising when Aké was sent off after just 3 minutes. This could have been one of those very few times that we could have taken 3 points home from Eindhoven, but Feyenoord failed to make use of the opportunity and in the end we were even lucky to get away with one point.

For some obscure reason both Mitrovic and Kozak don't score any anymore since Van Persie joined us. And Van Persie himself was injured, of course.

Feyenoord eliminated from the Dutch cup

What should have been a fantastic celebration - Van Persie's first game in De Kuip in 14 years - became a huge disappointment. There were no goals in the game against AZ and in extra time the tactic was changed and Van Persie was replaced by Kozak while Basacigoklu was replaced by Mitrovic.

But even in extra time there were no goals so the game went to penalty shoot-out. And even then Mitrovic could not score and because Van Beek and Toornstra(!) also missed, we were eliminated from the Dutch cup by AZ.

http://s6.postimg.cc/ls4oyv64x/image.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So that's one prize we won't win this year.

But what's worse is that Van Persie could not do in front of his own fans what they wanted him to do so badly: Score goals and help Feyenoord advance.

Do the fans think we will still win the title?

Feyenoord has trouble scoring but keep winning

We beat NAC Breda, but only with much difficulty. NAC was actually much better than us and when they finally scored things looked really bleak for us. Van Persie failed to score, so we changed the tactic to two forwards and replaced Toornstra (AMC) by Mitrovic. And that did it!

By the way, Robin van Persie was Man-of-the-Match.

http://s6.postimg.cc/af70dems1/NAC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The next match, against NEC in Nijmegen was one of the strangest matches of the season so far. Again we did not score. Klich was sent off, but that did not help. Six minutes before half time Corona was also sent off, but still no goals.

So once again we changed the tactic and again Mitrovic joined Van Persie and that finally, finally resulted in a single goal against nine NEC players. A match we would do well to quickly forget!

http://s6.postimg.cc/omwp21zgx/NEC.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And then there were the rumours that Basacigoklu resented being substituted by Mitrovic in the match against NEC.

http://s6.postimg.cc/iahjs7wep/Unrest.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

We told the press that none of this was true. We also talked with Basacikoglu and told him that he is now a full first squad member. He will be offered a better contract soon.

We have to play Chelsea next and cannot afford unrest right now! Especially since we don't have too many players for European games this season.

Feyenoord rise to the occasion

Feyenoord had to face Chelsea twice now in the Champions League Group Phase 2.

Obviously, especially after the mediocre results in the league, nobody expected Feyenoord to have even the remotest chance at Stamford Bridge. And for the longest time it looked like a sure win for Chelsea except that they were only leading 2-1 at half time and somehow they did not manage to score a third goal.

With 5 minutes on the clock Elvis Manu replaced Kozak and to the home crowd's horror - and the visiting fans' delight - Manu scored a totally undeserved and unexpected late equaliser!

Feyenoord vs Chelsea in Rotterdam

Without Van Persie and Mitrovic we don't have too many options. Also, because Kenneth Vermeer is injured Hahn has to replace him as goalie.

The question is, do we attack or play defensively? We know we can rely on our defence but this is Chelsea. On the other hand, we have not won a single match yet in this CL-group so we may need a win in order to qualify for the quarter finals.

It soon became clear that Chelsea was too strong for us to expect a win. On the other hand, even without Vermeer our defence was a solid as ever and the result was a goalless draw which could either be interpreted as gaining one point or as losing two.

A horrible week for Feyenoord...

Emmen should have been such an easy opponent, even with Hahn filling in as goalie for Kenneth Vermeer, and when Van Persie scored a great first goal - a perfect header after a pass by Van Ginkel - everything was just fine until that fateful 73rd minute when Hahn brought down Boekholt in the area and was sent off so Emmen scored the penalty kick. After that we struggled and lost all confidence.

Losing two points in Emmen was not what we had bargained for. Ajax is catching up on us again!

http://s6.postimg.cc/6aexttzgx/Emmen.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

For the next match, against ADO Den Haag, Kenneth Vermeer was back but unfortunately Van Persie was injured again. As some fans say, nothing is more predictable in football then Van Persie getting injured!

We tried two different tactics in the match but Kozak and Mitrovic failed to score and our midfielders also had an off-day. We managed eleven shots on goal, eight of them on target, but no goals...

So all of a sudden we have this dip and we lose 4 points in two matches and things don't look so good anymore.

We are still two points ahead, but too many games left to play.

Feyenoord fail to qualify

After so many wonderful European matches and so many excellent results in Europe we were optimistic when Borussia Dortmund came to Rotterdam. After all, the away-game was a goalless draw with only ten players! But this time they dashed our hopes well within the 90 minutes. We hardly got a decent chance and they scored two good goals. That's all that can be said about this match. It's over!

http://s6.postimg.cc/b09gw6fv5/Dortmund.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The next week a good 0-0 draw with Paris SG in Paris was insufficient to qualify for Feyenoord. And of course, even a win would not have been enough.

http://s6.postimg.cc/nc7rvxec1/PSG.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Still, with five draws and only one loss in this second group phase we have shown Europe that we have become a force to be reckoned with!

Feyenoord humiliate Ajax'

http://s6.postimg.cc/g205j9eq9/ajax.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Ajax, undefeated so far just like us, came out with an attacking formation, but after just 4 minutes Van Ginkel got past Muric and Serero and took the ball on his right foot and buried it in the top corner. Just what we needed!

Barely six minutes later Bruma made a sliding but took the man rather than the ball, so he was shown a yellow card. Unfortunately he lost his temper with the result that he was sent off. Not quite what we needed...

Ajax immediately had some good chances but Muric, Serero, and Zikovic all failed to score. So we recovered and El Ahmadi scored a second goal for us. Ten minutes later we were awarded a penalty when De Zeeuw barged El Ahmadi in the back and Van Ginkel sent the keeper the wrong way to score our third goal!

With N'Diaye in Bruma's position and an enthusiastic crowd supporting us we did not give Ajax too much of a chance after the break, either. In fact, Van Persie even scored a fourth goal for us!

Interestingly, we only managed a total of four(!) shots on goal and they all found the back of the net, while Ajax had twice that many opportunities but did not score a single goal.

After defeating Ajax 4-0 with only 10 men, how can we possibly manage to not score even one single goal at home against PEC Zwolle, a team struggling against relegation??? What is wrong with us??? If even Van Persie fails to score!?!?

And because Ajax of course did win their game against NAC in Breda (0-1) we are now only three points ahead again instead of five, with seven matches left to play.

Are we getting careless and did we underestimate them? Or is Van Persie not able, at his age, to play top football every week anymore - or even twice a week sometimes. Or is it just bad luck?

A good performance in Arnhem

Just three days after losing two points to PEC Zwolle we had to travel to Arnhem for our match against Vitesse, a stronger opponent than PEC Zwolle and an away game this time. And we were pleased to see the match going very well for us, even without El Ahmadi who is still injured so that Marco van Ginkel had to replace him as defensive midfielder (the key position in our tactic).

For some reason we seem to do better against strong opponents. And it was good to see Van Persie scoring another goal. He may just be the one to give us the title, after all!

And let's face it, we bought Van Persie halfway through the season from Man Utd for 5 million pounds plus a significant signing-on fee, so the fans obviously expect him to deliver.

http://s6.postimg.cc/hg5kjsi4x/Vitesse.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

We are still debating, though, if Van Persie should play in all six of the remaining league matches or if we should give Mitrovic another chance. But as long as Van Persie keeps scoring in most games we don't want to take any risks. (Perhaps Mitrovic should have replaced him after the break?)

By the way, Ajax played Man Utd in the UEFA Cup semi-final, 1st leg, in Amsterdam (2-2) so they will play their league match at a later time.

It would definitely seem that Van Persie cannot perform at this level every week anymore. Obviously that was why Man Utd was willing to sell him to us.

However, we still firmly believe we can make it and win the title; perhaps even undefeated!!!

We simply cannot afford to have Ajax catch up with us again, like they did last season! We have a better squad than last year and hardly anyone is injured or suspended. We're only missing El Ahmadi in the crucial DMC position.

Yes, we paid 5 million pounds and 3 million pounds sign-on fee in December! Plus the highest wages of our squad members!
So if we don't win the title this year it is wasted money (although we would qualify again for the CL perhaps).
But the fans want the title!!!
Perhaps I am letting him play too much but what else can I do? Pay so much and not let him play???

Mitrovic shows Feyenoord the way against AZ

In the home match against AZ we decided to let Robin van Persie play again. After all, we paid so much for him and we hope he can give us the title this year! The fans desperately want the title! But Van Persie got injured after just 17 minutes and at that point AZ was already in the lead.

But Mitrovic grabbed his chance; he played extremely well and he scored two goals so in the end we won this crucial match 3-1.
Well, having said that, of course every match is crucial at this stage!

And then, to our surprise, we heard that the match between FC VVV and Ajax in Venlo ended in a shock 1-1 draw thanks to a last minute equaliser by VVV well into injury time! In fact, we were already in the dressing room, glad that we had won but thinking that Ajax had won their game, too, when all of a sudden the fans who were still in the stadium started cheering!

It would seem that Ajax may have tried to save some energy for their UEFA Cup semi-final match and paid the price for it!

(By the way, in the UEFA Cup Ajax did extremely well, a few days later. They managed to eliminate Man Utd by a 1-2 win in Manchester so they will now play Benfica in the UEFA Cup final.)

But in the Dutch league we are three points ahead again with just four matches remaining now!!!

It seems fate has forced the decision which the fans were hoping for: see Mitrovic get more game time and start banging in goals again like he did in the first part of the season.

Feyenoord are in the hot seat now, make sure you keep your nerves! Best of luck...

Ajax in UEFA Cup Final! wow... this is a huge achievement, and at the same time it could be their downfall, as Eejit mentioned earlier they have dropped points because of their schedule. Go Feyenoord! we rarely talk about the defense, you concede very very little. Who are your outstanding defenders this year? can you tell us more about them, their style of play, etc..?

Feyenoord defeat FC Twente in Enschede

http://s6.postimg.cc/t7kra0rf5/fctfey2011_12006.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Without Van Persie (still injured) we managed to win the difficult away game in Enschede in the way we have won so many games already this season. Our defence was as solid as ever and we successfully prevented FC Twente from scoring so the early goal by Van Ginkel - after just 7 minutes - turned out to be all we needed to-day.

Mitrovic played the whole match. He did not score but he played well enough and we really think we will make it this third year, now that we have won these last two difficult matches, first against AZ and now against FC Twente.

http://s6.postimg.cc/955z6qifl/Twente.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Having said that, Ajax also won their match vs Heracles (3-0) so they are still just three points behind us and we should not underestimate Roda JC, our next opponent. After all, we are known to drop points against so-called weak opponents! So we are not there yet!

After Roda JC we still face FC Groningen, in Groningen, and then PSV in our own Kuip. It would be a fairy tale and a dream come true to win the title on the final day of the season in a match against PSV before our own fans!!!

Feyenoord keep winning

With Van Persie back from injury and fully rested we had him play again and we simply beat Roda JC 2-0 with goals by El Ahmadi (who is also back from his injury) and, yes, Van Persie himself! So this was our third win in a row at this very crucial stage.

http://s6.postimg.cc/rw7wgwd01/Roda.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Ajax keeps winning, too, though. This time they beat ADO Den Haag in The Hague (0-3) so we cannot afford to make any mistakes anymore. We still have to play FC Groningen (never an easy opponent) and, finally, PSV in Rotterdam! The fans are getting ready for that final all-deciding match.

To win the title again after 18 long years, and in our own stadium, De Kuip, against a team like PSV, would be a dream come true!

FEYENOORD WIN PREMIER DIVISION TITLE RACE!!!

http://s6.postimg.cc/73odid7f5/media_xl_723575.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

And so it was meant to be that, exactly like in 1993, we would win the Eredivisie Championship in Groningen! The delighted fans had been waiting for this title since 1999! Their only regret, if any, was that this historic moment had to be in an away game with a limited number of supporters and not in our own Kuip. But it did not stop them from celebrating!

While we continued our winning streak and beat FC Groningen 0-3 (with all three goals scored by midfielders) Ajax seemed to have given up all hope as they failed to beat FC Emmen in Amsterdam. Their minds are obviously on the UEFA Cup final clash with Benfica.

The next day, in Rotterdam, supporters gathered in the Coolsingel to celebrate with the players, just like they did back in 1999 and 1993. There is still one match left to play, but right now, who cares!?!

http://s6.postimg.cc/5rkx52v2p/feyenoord.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Feyenoord sign Ron Vlaar

With the supporters hopes up high for our future and with their spokesman saying they want to have 'a world class team' it was good to have Ron Vlaar be the first one to respond and sign for us just days after this historic match. Obviously more players are interested to join Feyenoord now than in previous years!

So with Vlaar having returned to Rotterdam, who knows who might be next in line...

Can the manager bring back crowd favourites Guidetti and Clasie? Will Vlaar replace van Beek? Also, what club legends make up the backroom staff?

We're thinking of Vlaar and Van Beek as DC's (with Bruma and N'Diaye as backup).
Midfield unchanged: El Ahmadi, Toornstra, Boetius, Van Ginkel and Bacacikoglu (with Promes as backup) so we need another player like Clasie there, but will Clasie be interested???
And Van Persie needs to be replaced by a good quality striker, either young and VERY talented, or experienced and proven to be effective. We'll do our best!

Feyenoord defeat PSV and remain undefeated

With Van Persie playing before the break we were 0-2 down after just over half an hour. It looked like our squad had been celebrating too much and totally forgotten that there was one last match left to be played. But you can hardly blame them.

After half-time Mitrovic replaced Van Persie and once more this young, talented striker showed us how valuable he can be for us. Just like in the match against AZ he scored two important goals as substitute so that we ended up winning our final game of the season against PSV 3-2!

Some fans are already saying that this is symbolic for what's happening: The Robin van Persie era is over and the Aleksandar Mitrovic era has begun!

http://s6.postimg.cc/sgrzgpck1/PSV.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So not only did we win the title, but we remained undefeated as well!!!

http://s6.postimg.cc/5a1j2szwx/Fey_Champ.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

It is incredible that Ajax lost just one match this season. This was when we defeated them 4-0 in Rotterdam with 10 men!
Just imagine what the table would have looked like if we had lost that game...

Van Persie announces retirement

Less than three days later Van Persie announces his retirement from professional football!
Perhaps some fans had expected this, but to many others it came as quite a shock.
Still, he was worth every penny we paid to get him back!

Well done in any case to have remained undefeated in the League, that's no small feat. And it's always great when old glories come back, even for one season, and help achieve success. Your investment was worth it, you really needed an additional striker in your force.

Oh it's great to see Vlaar back home!

Feyenoord's successful season

http://s6.postimg.cc/69xxwzkr5/e_Indstand.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

While Van Persie played an important role in Feyenoord's successful season, it was really the goalie and the defenders (and the defensive midfielder!) who made the difference between Feyenoord and Ajax. We only conceded 16 goals in 34 league matches!

Average ratings:

Vermeer (GK) 7.66

Nelom (DL) 7.21
Bruma (DC) 7.23
Van Beek (DC) 7.06
Geis (DR) 7.49

El Ahmadi (DMC) 7.94

Our midfield, apart from El Ahmadi, consisted mostly of attacking midfielders and they scored lots of goals:

Toornstra (AMC) 11 (48)
Van Ginkel (MC) 8 (46)
Boetius (AM/FRL) 4 (38)
Promes (AMR) 4 (44)
Basacikoglu (AMFRL) 2 (18)

Mitrovic was the most effective striker, apart from Van Persie:

Mitrovic 10 (11)
Kozak 8 (27)
Manu 1 (2)

So the main question now is: Should I accept a new contract offer by the Board to stay on as coach for at least one more season to try and be even more successful in Europe? Or should I apply for a job at Tottenham or Liverpool to show them what a Dutch coach can do for them.... like I did for Feyenoord?
