Now this was epic, Good Friday 1984, Quebec Nordiques vs Montreal Canadiens, the rivalry to end all rivalries. Those two cities have loathed each other for 400 years now.

Best part of this scrap, it starts at the end of the period, goes on for a while, finally gets broken up and the players go to the dressing rooms. Come back out after the intermission... everyone gets right back on the ice and back into fighting! :) Even the Habs-Flyers bench-clearer in... 1986? when Roy gave it to Hextall wasn't as good.

And now here's the thing though. Everyone will say omg hockey thuggery violent blabla but they don't know what they are talking about. Nowadays you see much dirtier play much more often, and skilled players getting targetted, like the multiple headshots Crosby's got leading to all the concussion problems he had... because the players know they'll get away with it? What's losing a few days' pay at worst when you're making 3 million a year? That's not punishment. Back before they brought in the instigator rule you very seldom saw dirty play like that, because you knew, if I touch Gretzky, Semenko is gonna come smash my head in. So one thought twice about it.

It did occasionally get out of hand like above but not often. And it /was/ fun to watch. An elbow to the head, or a leg taking a guy's knee out, is decidedly the opposite of fun to watch.

So nice to have a fellow Canuck and hockey fan on here after all these years.....plus someone who enjoys the rough stuff like me......

have I mentioned that I love you?

oh and by the way, the only time I saw Hextall lose a fight was vs. Potvin when he was getting old..... he certainly didn't lose to Roy during the '87 pre-game brawl :D

Need to bring 1v1 fights into more sports, especially field sports. Would solve a lot of the bullshit in most of them.

28-12-15, 04:06 PM
What are the rules with regards to 1v1 fights in Ice Hockey? Do both players get 'sin binned' following the fight?

Craig Forrest

Yes. Fighting carries an automatic 5 minute penalty. However since they offset each other, neither teams has to play a man short - but neither penalized player comes out of the penalty box until the next stoppage in play.

Also, if one guy is deemed to start the fight, he will be assessed a separate 2 minute penalty for "instigating" which also carries a 10-minute misconduct penalty (however the team doesn't play a man down for that penalty either.... it simply a way to punish the player)

btw, back in the old days, you didn't get the 10 minute penalty for instigating..... and that let the players police themselves on the ice.... if one of your guys was taken advantage of, you could go deal with the offender and simply serve the extra 2 minutes..... now with the 10 minute misconduct penalty being automatic, players are much more hesitant, and as a result, there are more dirty hits and stick fouls than there used to be.... players aren't afraid of retribution like they used to be.

OK, the NHL playoffs are about to start... I know that no one cares except maybe Archibald and Rapinoe..... but my team managed to sneak in to the last playoff position on the second last day of the season.... our reward is to play the best team in the league in the first round... but hey, anything can happen :D

12-04-16, 07:04 PM
I... don't care.

The Habs didn't make it, and there are *no* Canadian teams in, so fuckit. And I'm hoping Detroit get swept so that maybe just maybe they'll finally get rid of Ken Holland.

I'm not gonna watch any of it but will kinda hope San Jose wins it.

Craig Forrest

Meh to Canadian teams..... more than half the players are Canadian so it doesn't *really* matter.....

I have no expectations for my Flyers.... we shouldn't even be there, but we are.... so it's all house money from this point onwards :D

13-04-16, 12:23 AM
Eh, still. Canadian teams are more important than teams where they shouldn't be (i.e. anywhere in the US that doesn't get winter!).

Anyone seen what Bobrovsky is up to lately? Some unreal saves - night after night! These two probably the best of the lot. Unreal!

Sedin brothers going to retire. Well, 18 years is a long time in this league. They have been sensational. But guess, what's the point for them scating one more year on a team that's gonna be really bad for the next foreseeable future? Gives Canucks space to start the rebuild finally, too.

I liked the Sedins, as much as I don't really cheer for Vancouver..... good players, and from what I've heard class acts off the ice too :ok:

Playoffs are about to start :D

What team you support?

As a Flames fan, season is over. Let's talk in six months again. :behindsofa:
Well, with my left hand I keep the fingers crossed for the Preds. Ever since I've been to Nashville and they handed out those lovely yellow hats that day before the game, I have a soft spot for them.

Live in Ottawa and my kids are Sens fans, but I've cheered for Philly since I started watching hockey when I was 6.

It'll be tough for my boys vs Shittsburgh, but if we stay out of the penalty box, we can beat them.

I hope Nashville comes out of the West. I don't cheer for anyone but the Flyers, but if Nashville or Winnipeg won, I probably wouldn't complain.

10-04-18, 04:10 PM
The Sedins were definitely top shelf guys off the ice. I haven't considered myself a Canucks fan since the whole debacle with Keenan and Messier that led to Bure leaving, but the Twins were fun to watch. I liked what one of them said about the best and worst moment of his life having been game 7 of the final... best, playing in a Stanley Cup game 7, worst, losing it.

That last home game though... Daniel (#22) scoring off an assist by Henrik (#33) at 0:33 of the 2nd to tie it at 1:1... then scoring at 2:33 of OT to win it... couldn't have planned it better. (This was actually the first NHL game I've watched all season...)

Wouldn't mind Winnipeg or San Jose winning... but don't really care who wins. So long as each of Boston, Toronto, Las Vegas, Philadelphia (sorry Craig...) and Shitsburgh each lose.
