Well, tomorrow marks the beginning of the Cheltenham Festival

For those long-term users of the site, you'll know that I and a few others like to have a flutter when these festivals come round. It all started 2/3 years ago when ashton430 was giving tips and I ended up losing over 100 because not a single one of my bets came in :tsk:

Money is a bit tighter for me now with a mortgage and bills to pay but I'll probably still put a quid on each race.

Anybody else going to be getting involved this week?

Dermotron

On Sporting Life pouring through videos of the the races for tomorrow (mainly as I don't follow the nags day to day anymore)

Probably have a bet on every race. Might keep a running total in this post for tomorrow:

Day 1

Race 1. - Agent Archie - mainly as I've a hunch. Midnight Games each way
Race 2. - Al Ferof - too many of Henderson's get blown up as superstars only to fail at on the Hill, must be the way he trains them, so going with the next best
Race 3. -
Race 4. - Hurricane Run - will be doubling and trebling him up. This is our Banker and should be every punters. Clear run, won't be any horse within 10 lengths.
Race 5. - Garde Champere - Old timer is off what can be a feather weight for him. Even at 13 he'll be hard to beat. Bolger's only runner too.
Race 6. - Quevega - someone posted 'Will Quevega lose', 'Only if after the race she turns out to be a gelding'.
Race 7. -

Bet's so far:

€2 EW on Agent Archie at 33-1 Lost
€2 EW on Midnight Games at 8-1 Lost

Sizing Europe @10/11
Hurricane Fly @4/5 Lost
Quevega @1/2 WINNER
Big Buck's @1/2
€1 Yankee

Hurricane Fly @4/5 Lost
Quevega @1/2 WINNER
Sprinter Sacre @4/5 WINNER
Sizing Europe @10/11
€1 Yankee

€5 win Montbazon Lost
€5 win Tetlami Lost
€2.50 EW Midnight Game Lost

€10 SF 1. Sprinter Sacre 2. Al Ferof Lost

Sprinter Sacre @4/5 WINNER
Hurricane Fly @4/5 Lost
Quevega @1/2 WINNER
€30 treble

€2.50 EW Tullamore Dew Lost
€2.50 EW Our Mick 3rd

€2.19 EW Garde Champetre Lost

€5 WIN Quevega WINNER

€5 WIN Bless the Wings Lost

Total Out: €95
Total In: €2.48

Happen I'll do the same, Derm. I'll post up my bets for each day and how much I'll have lost as a summary

Dermotron
12-03-12, 12:55 PM
I've a stop loss of €100. I'll have €1 bets just for an interest in some races though.

Mark
12-03-12, 12:58 PM
Exactly what I said in the OP mate. I went mental the first time I had a go on the festival a few years ago, nothing was going right so I started betting bigger to get money back and it didn't work

So yep, sticking to 1 bets this time around. I'll probably check the runners tomorrow morning though. I actually thought the festival kicked off today.

Dermotron
12-03-12, 01:06 PM
Had a great year last year, 3 races in a row, 9-1, 20-1, 10-1. And with 13 winners, patriotic betting was making up for the recession

AMC
12-03-12, 01:08 PM
Can't beat a bit of Cheltenham!

I'm changing tactics this year, and perming up a few short price favs, and probably just do a small Lucky 15 on the other races.

If you're going against Sprinter Sacre Derm, bet with Paddy Power as if it does win they'll refund all other losing singles.

I've only done one bet so far which is an enhanced treble of Hurricane Fly, Quevega and Big Bucks at 4/1.

Dermotron
12-03-12, 01:11 PM
If you're doing short prices, Yankee's are better value than Lucky 15's, even with treble money on 1 winner, just not worth paying for the single bets imo.

AMC
12-03-12, 01:18 PM
The Luckys are for the other races for a bit of interest, were they're big prices.

Even Yankee's aren't going to get my stake back if I have 2 winners, and initially I was going to pick 4 horses and go big on trebles and a four fold, but decided to go for that treble and will probably do Long Run as a single.

Cheltenham - Day 1.

Don't know about you, but I have a good feeling about today.

Time for a coffee and a study of the form :)

Just out of interest is there anyone that would be interested in joining a sweepstake for the Gold Cup, Friday? Just seeing if it would be worth it :D

Dermotron
13-03-12, 10:13 AM
Gold Cup sweepstake will be hard to get interest in if people actually look at the horses running  Its not the may west by any means

Mark
13-03-12, 10:14 AM
Depends if I've got any money left in the account by Friday

I'm just going to get a coffee now as well before having a look at the runners. Looking at Galileo's Choice and Darlan for the win and Montbazon or Prospect Wells at e/w. I just like to back Walsh/Nicholls and always try to make sure I've covered McCoy as well :D

Dermotron
13-03-12, 10:19 AM

That's the bet thought - all of us trying to get 1/2 horses. :)

Mark, you got good choice those were my fancies - that probably means bad news for you. I think I'm going to do a lucky 15 and Trixie...

WelshRed

Ps, the last 2 races are on RUK, for those who don't fancy coughing up 20 a month http://www.liveonlinefooty.com/ they offer it on here as part of the subscription... Not sure if they have closed registration so be quick :)

Scrap that - registration has stopped.

We can stream RTE (main Irish station) so thankfully I can watch them at work and look forward to the gold that comes out of Ted Walsh's mouth :D

If you have a 5 with any of the major sites you can watch the racings live. Unlikely firstrow will have the racing but I'm sure it won't be hard to find

Mark
13-03-12, 10:50 AM
Darlan 1.30 & Quantitativeeasing 2.40 ...both to be placed

7/1 special on William Hill...

Dermotron
13-03-12, 11:06 AM
Nicholls is 3-1 to be top trainer . . . . Mullins is likely to have 2 winners today so it might make sense to have bet after racing today.

I know Jack all about racing really or the different types of bets you can get so I've gone for the option that would win me the most!! :ok:

So far.....

http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/5461/bets.png (http://img837.imageshack.us/i/bets.png/)

Most of my bets so far have been covered by previous wins :) I was meant to be going to Cheltenham this year but one of our 'crew' died a month ago so we decided to cancel......... i had plenty money set aside for it so i plan on punting 10+ each race :D If i lose, i lose

Goofy
13-03-12, 11:43 AM
One of them is already a loser, The Giant Bolster is going for the Gold Cup instead of the JLT......... the dangers of antepost betting! Fuck knows why they're going for the Gold Cup, he's got no chance unless there's a few fallers

Mark
13-03-12, 11:45 AM
25's worth of bets now on! Just for today's races as well - So much for 1 a bet on each race  There's just tooo many to go for!

AMC

Bets for Day 1 placed so far:

20 on Darlan (offer from Bet Victor, bet 20 on first race today get a free 20 bet on the first race tomorrow and 20 in casino chips).

15 on Al Ferof (10 free bet from Will Hill and a 5 free bet from Ladbrokes

50 enhanced treble on Hurricane Fly, Quevega and Big Bucks.

I'll probably do a small trixie or a yank on the rest of the races today.

As usual Tuesday is make or break time for Cheltenham!

A fair few short price favourites got turned over last year which didn't do me too many favours so hoping they come in this year.

Sprinter Sacre aside that is.

I've had no free bet offers from Willy Hill :( Favourism!

AMC

Mark
13-03-12, 02:49 PM
1.30
1st - Cinders and Ashes
2nd - Darlan
3rd - Trifolium

No winners for me here and it also blows my accumulator after one race (ffs). Although I did do that McCoy special so Darlan placing is good news. Did anybody correctly call Cinders and Ashes? I don't think the name was mentioned at all by anybody!

Goofy

Got my bet matched at 11.0 on betfair for Alberta, sweet! :)

So tomorrow looks like this.....

First race - Peddlers Cross wins me 100
2nd Race - Buena Vista wins me 120
3rd Race - Alberta wins me a fortune......
4th Race - Chuck the lot on Big Bucks only for him to clatter a hurdle and throw Ruby into the turf :(

Yep, Bueno Vista has won the pertemps the last 2 years, took up the lead early on last year and brought home the bacon at 16/1 for me (year previous when i was down there i had him on my list and changed my mind at the last minute....... stormed up the hill late and won by a few lengths in the end) :D Backed it again at 16/1 antepost this year (5ew) - age will catch up with him eventually........ hopefully not this year ;) I backed him at Aintree last year when i was down there, had the race won until his jockey nearly pulled him up at the last fence........ useless cunt lost all momentum and finished 2nd. Seems to come alive this time of year :ok:

I have worked in a bookies since December and only 1 tip has actually made me serious money. Peter Bowens - Pension Plan, 16-1 down to 6-1 SP, had Best odds on it and 20 on @16's.

Other than that it is usually mates of mates that get the tips... We do of course follow the higher staking punters, but there is no one around here that has any 'tips' as such. Just huge stakes on Big Bucks and other short priced dead certs - Sprinter Sacre etc...

Well it seemed like it was only yesterday I was losing money at Cheltenham, but Aintree starts tomorrow.

I'm actually going, which is the first time I've gone on the Thursday, went Ladies Day (friday) last year and been to 3 Grand Nationals, all before I started working in the bookies.

Looking forward to seeing Big Bucks, but at 1/4 I won't be betting in that race! Actually maybe a small forecast :D

Winning distances my be a good call, he always wins by short distance, comfortably - he is a teaser :D

I'm working tomorrow open / close and fully expect a nice busy day - in all day Saturday too - first grand national working for a bookie :ok:

I think a few lucky 15's may be on the cards, or may just do a few trixies... See what's about :)

2.30 gottany o's has moved from 40's to 16's someone knows something :)

Diamond Harry also moved from 20's to 16's not a big move but enough to limit big bets at bookies :)

Simonsig easy winner of the first, my horse Super Duty came in 2nd! McGuire did really well to stay onboard after a horrible mistake at the 2nd last, the horses nose mustve touched the ground!

Simonsig looks like the real deal though, pretty much won on the bridle by a dozen lengths (might have been closer minus the mistake by Super Duty but still would have won).
