In the first competitive game of the season and for a chance to win some silverware, old rivals Legia Warsaw and Dinamo Zagreb go head to head. With some big name signings prepared to make their debut this was going to be an interesting match.
With so many changes to both sides' starting XI since their last clash, Warsaw would enter the game as favourites. The gulf in spending was huge. Warsaw winning the title last season provided a bumper payday as well as selling some of last seasons stars for a tidy profit.
When asked about the fortune spent, Manager Erkifino muttered something along the lines of 'net spend', 'opposition shouldn't be underestimated' and 'bananas'...
Attendance at the Estadio Azteca was 84,885. Both teams were cagey and it was nip and tuck and cliché, cliché, cliché...
Warsaw broke the deadlock in the 31st minute when new signing, Sami Khedira's corner was converted by new signing Serge Aurier. The first half petered out. The second half brought with it a few goals. New signing Aurier adding his second and livewire Nasri beating Buffon with a dipping shot to make it 2-1 in the 63rd minute. It was a nervey last 30 mins as Zagreb pushed for an equaliser. The 88th minute brought the next goal and it was new signing Cavani that buried new signing's Vidal deft pass... They play for Warsaw by the way. The wind was knocked out of Zagreb and the match finished 3-1.
It was a dominant performance by Warsaw as they limited Zagreb's chances. Commiserations.
Bring on the new season!
