    Stalemate at Goodison Park

On Saturday 22nd October we played Everton at Goodison Park and it wasn't easy, but with considerable difficulty we held the Toffees to a 0-0 draw.

As we had already anticipated Everton came out with an attacking formation but nevertheless, the first chance was for Denis Suárez who tried a right-footed volley. However, Suárez was surrounded by defenders so it was a difficult chance and he put the ball well over the bar.

Everton were the stronger team, though. Lukaku played particularly well and when Matic went in hard on the Belgian striker he was immediately shown a yellow card which clearly hampered our defensive midfielder.

Even so, we seemed to score when Wanyama sent the ball into the area and Suárez found himself with plenty of time to strike the ball on the half-volley and find the net, but it was ruled out because Mahrez was offside.

The next chance was for Everton again. Lukaku chipped the ball into the penalty area ahead of Januzaj who tried to collect the ball but László got down well to save to feet. And minutes later when Barkley had a go from a free-kick Lászó managed to save the ball with his legs.

In the second half we brought on Akpoguma for Bernat and Besic for Matic, but Everton remained the better team and it is a good thing that both Van Dijk and László are both at the top of their form.

We made a final substitution as we brought on Cataldi for Praet, but it made no difference and when Lukaku spotted Oscar in the area and chipped the ball ahead of him László had to produce a quite remarkable reaction stop to deny Oscar's close-range header. And so we withheld the pressure!

All in all, Everton were the better team, but Van Dijk played very well while a confident Ferenc László was named Man of the Match.
    Spoiler!

We don't concede many goals - and that's an understatement - but we shall have to score more goals if we really want to defend our title this season.

    Spoiler!

We have a very tight schedule these next few weeks so we will rest several players in our upcoming European match.

By the way, our December schedule will be even more demanding as we shall have to play the FIFA Club World Cup games in addition to our Premier League games of that month!

    Our next fixture

Ventspils have a mediocre team and they concede lots of goals. They will play with a defensive 4-4-2 formation trying to prevent us from scoring.

We will rest Di Bari, Mahrez, Matic, Wanyama and Marichez. They need a break and besides, it will be good for the likes of Clasie, Besic and Agüero to get game time again.

Ooh, stopped in your tracks at last. But on the plus side, still unbeaten and another clean sheet on the board.

Don't forget Chelsea. They also held us to a draw with that late equaliser of theirs.

An away point is good as Everton were the better team

Risky to play Bernat in such a big game - he's not an out and out defender so might be something to think about for future games

Tight schedule but all average at best teams so you should come through it easy enough

    Lazlao on

You're right that Bernat can also play as left midfielder. He is good but it was a bit risky. Still, he creates chances!

Disappointing but expected draw. Glad you didn't lose at least!

Ventspils are no match for you so I say rest some players and an easy 0-3 win for you!

Rovers win at the Olimpiskais Centrs Ventspils

On 25th October we played Ventspils at the interesting Olimpiskais Centrs without several of our key players who needed rest. And although the match was nothing to write home about, we achieved an important milestone by beating our opponents and qualifying for the next phase.

Ventspils have a weak team and they where unfortunate to have Osipovs go off injured after just eleven minutes. And to make matters worse for them, when we somehow failed to find the next Savinovs scored an own goal.

When it comes to finding the net the second half wasn't any better than the first half, but at least Agüero scored his second goal of the season.

This season Agüero is once more our backup striker rather than Duelund or Vera and perhaps that will turn out to be a good thing.

Of course we outplayed our opponents but let's say we had mercy on them. Clasie played quite well again and he was named Man of the Match. And by the way, it is quite remarkable that when we give our subs game time it always seems to be Jordy Clasie who performs better than any of the others.
    Spoiler!

So as expected we qualified from Group H - as did Besiktas. We will still have to play Besiktas at Ewood Park but that final group match is mostly going to be for statistics only. Although, it would be good to win the group.

    Our next fixture

Eddie Howe normally prefers Stoke City to play an attacking 4-5-1 formation, but for this particular game they will start with two strikers.

Stoke have a strong team and Ray Howe is an important part of the Stoke defence.

We will start with our regular lineup. Everyone is fit and available and we need to win this match so we shall not take any risks.

Predicted win for you and well done on qualifying for the next stage!

As for Stoke, they don't look special so I predict an easy win for you: 0-2.

Simple win and that looks like top of group done as well

Stoke don't look great but their attacking full backs have quality and could cause problems

Narrow win if home but if the game is away they may sneak a draw

Were Benfica a 5th team in your group
Congratz on the win mate, Clasie was just that classy. BTW how much did you get KUN* Aguero for and any chance of a screenshot?

Yes, and what's more, Agüero has finally said what we hoped he would say!

We signed him for just over 3 million. He had a fantastic first year and was unhappy to lose his place to Di Bari and did not perform well in other positions in his second year. So now he only plays as striker occasionally.
    Spoiler!

Because of his remarkable coaching skills we want to keep him at the club!

Another win and another clean sheet!

On Saturday 29th October we played Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium and we travelled home with three points and yet another clean sheet in the bag!

It wasn't a game with many scoring chances, but with Van Beek and Wanyama as our best players we defended well and we did not need many scoring opportunities as we effectively decided the match in the first half already.

With 33 minutes on the clock Matic lobbed the ball in the direction of Marichez, who put a low cross into the near post. Suárez stretched to reach the pass and he managed to lift the ball towards Di Bari who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and scored the opener!

And just six minutes later Matic decided the match with a perfect low drive.

In the second half we brought on 20-year-old Aidan O'Neill and it must be said that O'Neill played remarkably well! Two years ago he joined us on a free transfer and who knows, this might just be the year for O'Neill to break through into the first team! It certainly would not surprise our coaches.
    Spoiler!

In that second half there were no further goals. Not even after we had brought on Jordy Clasie for Matic and Sergio Agüero for Di Bari, although once again Clasie played very well.

All in all, a solid and well-deserved win, but we received too many yellow cards. Wanyama played brilliantly and he was named Man of the Match although Van Beek played just as well or perhaps even better than Wanyama.
    Spoiler!

So it looks like we are back on track after that 0-0 draw at Everton, although it must be added that Man Utd still seem to be virtually unstoppable.

    Spoiler!

We have to play five games in the next seventeen days. Fortunately, we do have enough squad depth and we still don't have any injuries or suspensions yet, either.

    Our next fixture

Our next game is the EFL Cup match against Aston Villa who were relegated from the Championship last season and who are struggling again this season.

Villa are currently in 8th position on the Football League One chart, but that is hardly unexpected as their squad lacks any players of real quality. Their only strength is their fairly reliable defence.

Nevertheless, Steve Dodd decided that Aston Villa will play with an attacking 4-4-2 formation as it's a home game for them.

Now even though it's an away game for us, this is still another good opportunity to rest some players and to try out something new.

So we will start with Akpoguma as left defender so that Juan Bernat can play as left midfielder for a change. Suárez will move to the number 10 position which means that Praet will start out on the bench where he will be sitting next to Cataldi.

Also, Agüero will replace Di Bari and Clasie will replace Matic while Steele will be our goalkeeper in this match.

    Again I predicted it right.

You should trash Aston Villa for sure so I go for a big win: 1-5.

Ten-man Rovers advance in EFL Cup

On Wednesday 2nd November we played Aston Villa in the EFL Cup 3rd Round at Villa Park and we had to finish the game with ten men after Wanyama had been sent off. But fortunately we stayed calm and we had sufficient individual class to defeat our Football League One opponents, even with ten men.

We were by far the better team but Wanyama was sent off when he backed into and fouled Barnes and was shown a second yellow card. It seemed unnecessary but our lads stayed calm as Besic was brought on to replace Wanyama and Suárez had to go off for his early shower.

And while Suárez was still having his shower Mahrez crossed the ball low and hard from the right and Agüero swivelled on the ball, tried a low drive and scored!

We played well with ten men. Steele was very confident and he did well to turn the ball away both times that Hirst hit a fierce shot. Akpoguma also played well as left defender, but Bernat as left midfielder did not seem to be a huge success.

Mahrez was named Man of the Match.
    Spoiler!

This month and the next we will need almost every single squad player and of course with Wanyama's red card we have our first suspension of the new season.

    Our next fixture

Our next fixture is the home game against Newcastle United who are currently in second position on the Premier League table!

Tite, their Brazilian manager, normally prefers Newcastle to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation and it must be said that the Magpies are having a fantastic season. Fabinho is the rock around which their formidable defence is built.

For this game Newcastle will play with just two strikers, partly because James Wilson is injured.

We will play with our normal formation, but this time Serrano (19) will be our attacking midfielder. He played so well against Ventspils that we want to give the talented youngster a chance to show his skills in the number 10 position.

Also, because Wanyama is suspended Clasie will play alongside Matic.

Oof that was some luck you needed there against Aston Villa which was unexpected.

Newcastle look decent, but not a world class team. I think a small win for you: 1-2.

You are through and that is all that matters!

Could have easily been an early exit though after the red

Newcastle have a decent team there and the likes of Kyle Walker and Assombolonga on bench.

Sels is a good keeper who will go his best to stop you

Kyle Walker on the bench because they now have our Adam Henley!
