We qualify for the CL Quarter Final!

Last night we qualified for the Champions League Quarter Finals by holding Schalke 04 to stalemate at the Veltins-Arena, although we came very close to losing the game!

After winning our first three group games we very nearly lost the next three games, but we managed to hold Schalke 04 to a well-deserved goalless draw!

Obviously our opponents tried to get men forward to support the attack, but their midfield and their forward line had an unusual poor day at the office, while Jordy Wehrmann ruled like a midfield general again and our counters were at times more dangerous than Schalke 04's attacking efforts.

After a fairly uneventful first half, at least with very few real scoring chances, we brought on Amrabat for Wouter Burger but this made hardly any difference. The best scoring opportunity was for Renato Sanches who found a way past Chong and tried his luck. However, Bijlow saved superbly and held the ball.

But then, with just eleven minutes remaining it still seemed to go horribly wrong for us! McKennie came forward and he beat Amrabat with a dummy, then went the other way before hitting the ball ahead of Lee Seung-Woo. And when the Korean winger realised he had no-one near except Federico Palacios he tried a volley and scored - but it was ruled out because Palacios had strayed into an offside position!

And so we got the goalless draw we needed!

    Summary
With Wehrmann as our best player we may not have played dazzling football but it was effective football nonetheless! Perhaps we were a bit lucky that Schalke's midfield lacked creativity and their forward line was inefficient.
    Spoiler!

And so we qualified for the Champions League Quarter Finals after three wins, two losses and a final goalless draw!

And we will play Hertha BSC in the Quarter Finals. Hertha are 10 points ahead of Schalke in the Bundesliga table and they are still in the title race!

    Spoiler!

  3. Congrats. It would have been an outrage if you hadn’t made the last 8 after your start in this group so glad you are through... decent chance to make the last 4 again by the sounds of it

Damb squib of a game - but looks like you nullified them well

Would have thought they might have stuck a bit more effort in knowing if they beat you (depending on score etc) they could have qualified

Looks like a dream draw - what are the other QF?

Should be a SF place unless Hertha have a belter of a team!

Great league fixtures coming up - could have the league sown up by the ime of PSV game

    You missed that goal, then?

Anyways, Hertha had a very strong team last year so we'll see if we even reach the semi final. It's a 50% chance at best as they have a 10 point gap with Schalke and we struggled to eliminate them!

A very comfortable win over FC Emmen

Last night we defeated a mediocre FC Emmen-side with Vente netting a brace this time! However, Idrissi had to go off injured.

We got the early opener when Amrabat passed the ball to Chong in the area and our left winger jinked past Van der Meer and Magnússon and rifled in low with his right and found the net.

Ten minutes later Idrissi had to go off injured, though, so we brought on Haps to play as left winger while Chong moved to the right winger position. And this worked rather well. As a matter of fact, Haps played fantastically!

Five minutes into the second half Haps centered the ball from the left and Vente had the beating in the air of Van der Meer and scored a fine header to double our lead. Some ten minutes later Haps spun past Nunnely and fired the ball into the area and once again Vente jumped with Van der Meer and won the ball and got his 25th goal of the season!

Philips scored a very late consolation goal for Emmen so Bijlow did not keep a clean sheet, but our winning League run continues!

    Summary
Another fantastic team performance. We outclassed FC Emmen and Dylan Vente, who has scored five goals in our last two League games, was named Man of the Match. Wehrmann also continues to play brilliantly, as do our fullbacks.
    Spoiler!

PSV also won their game; they defeated Willem II while Ajax had mercy on Jong Ajax but they still beat them (1-0) so that the top of the table did not really change.

We will be playing our game in hand against PEC Zwolle next and then it's the international break so it's switching hats again as we have to play two World Cup qualifying games again...

Idrissi's injury means that Summerville will play against PEC Zwolle. And Bannis and Vente can finally play as striker pair again.

Yes, indeed. Nor did the Italian clubs make it!

You can see FC Bayern, if you scroll up, in PSV's group. They ended in third place, though.

Vente? 25 goals already this season, from 25 appearances.

Wehrmann scores a hat-trick - Burger sent off!

Last night we won our midweek game in hand thanks to Jordy Wehrmann's fantastic hat-trick, but Wouter Burger was sent off for punching Van Wijnen in the face!

We couldn't play with two strikers after all because Dylan Vente had picked up a minor injury in training and so Wehrmann stayed on as defensive midfielder and we played with Bannis as lone striker. Also, Summerville started as right winger again because Idrissi is injured.

Now we started well and Jordy Wehrmann scored the early opener with a fierce shot from just outside the box. Summerville also played well and with 30 minutes on the clock he was the one to dink the ball in for Wehrmann to score a bullet-header and double our lead!

Wehrmann has been playing extremely well, lately, but last night - in the absence of Dylan Vente - he was also extremely efficient when it comes to scoring goals!

And so it could have been all good news for us, just before the international break, as we were comfortably winning our game in hand, if only Wouter Burger had controlled himself when Van Wijnen kept provoking him. But Burger didn't - and he was shown the red card!

We still dominated the game, even with ten men, and when Summerville lobbed the ball left towards Malacia our fullback cut it back to Jordy Wehrmann who scored with a volley to complete his hat-trick!

The second half was uneventful. Flemming did score a late consolation goal but the three points were in the bag.

    Summary
Because of Vente's injury we played our one striker formation again, with Wehrmann as defensive midfielder - and Wehrmann delivered! Malacia, with his driving forward runs, was named Man of the Match. Burger may be facing a very long suspension, though.
    Spoiler!

Now like us, PSV also keep winning their games. This time they defeated Vitesse to stay in the title race.

After the international break there are just eight games remaining, starting with the challenging away game against AZ on 30th of March.

The big question is, will Wouter Burger be available for these final eight League matches, or will his ban be extended and will he miss the rest of the season when it comes to League games?

    Spoiler!

There's not even much in it on goal difference.
I expect that it the last we see of Burger this season in a Feyenoord shirt.

Burger banned for a further ten matches!

Wouter Burger, who was sent off for punching a PEC Zwolle player in the face, has been banned for a further ten Dutch matches!

This means that Burger will be unavailable for our remaining Eredivisie games, as well as for the first three Dutch games of next season.

Wouter Burger's suspension also means that both of our central midfielders will now be unavailable for the rest of the season, since El Bouchataoui is still in rehab after his surgery early November last year.

We had started the season with Burger and El Bouchataoui as central midfielders. Wijnaldum, as our player/coach, was backup for either one of them. And we also have Jordi Wehrmann, but Wehrmann is more suited to play as defensive central midfielder.

Fortunately, in the January transfer window both Orkun Kokcü and Sofyan Amrabat returned to De Kuip and we shall really need them now!

    ------------------

Breaking news: Sofyan Amrabat has just picked up a chest injury in training and will be out for about three weeks as well! There's the international break first but Amrabat will definitely miss the first couple of games after the break...

    Clinical win

Burger - noooooooooooooo - end of season (can he play in Europe though?)

Wehrmann seems to have done rather well of late - how's his stats for the season?

Fortunately Burger can play in Europe.

Wehrmann has 8 goals and 2 assists and 2 MoMs from 23(5) appearances. He really needs to play as DMC, though, with instructions to move forward (or back) with set back pieces and we only need a DMC with our European 4-1-4-1 (winger) formation.

When both Vente and Bannis are available (so only in Dutch games) we play a 4-4-2 formation with two strikers and no DMC. So Wehrmann on the bench....

Perhaps for next year we need to look at a formation with a DMC (Wehrmann) and two strikers (Vente and Bannis) or with Bannis as AMC behind Vente?

Two away games: Malta and Romania

During this short international break we shall have to play two World Cup qualifying games and both of them are away games; first we play Malta, a relatively easy game, and then we have to play the more challenging away game in Romania.

We will play Malta with no less than five Feyenoord players: Bijlow, Malacia, Kongolo, Chong and Bannis. It's a good opportunity for each of them to show their skill at this level.

As usual, in our second game in Romania we will rest (most of) the Feyenoord players as they will need to be fit for the away game against AZ.
