Everton have a strong team out

But looks like they have a few "GREY" players on bench (no positions?)

    If only...

Last night we played Everton in front of a crowd of 51,102 who went from hope to despair with the referee playing an important part as we were eliminated from European football.

It started so well. Pickford fisted the ball away after a long shot by Vilhena and Jørgensen was first to the rebound and netted to end his ten-match goal drought as the crowd erupted in joy! Suddenly we had a real chance to qualify for the next round!

And with just three minutes on the clock Berghuis received a long pass and got a glancing shot at goal and he left the goalkeeper with no chance to the rapturous delight of the home crowd! But to our misfortune it was ruled out as Vormer had apparently strayed just offside.

If only that goal had not been ruled out...

But there was plenty of time left and we were brimming with confidence now and even when Morgan Schneiderlin scored with a fierce shot many of us continued to believe that anything was still possible.

If only Bijlow had not been sent off...

It started when Ramírez took the ball into the penalty area and hit it with his right foot. Bijlow could not gather the ball cleanly and when Ramírez went for the follow up he went down easy - or was fouled by Bijlow, as the referee seemed to think. So he stopped the play and VAR had a look at the incident and to our disbelief Bijlow received the red card and a penalty was awarded to Everton!

We had little choice now. We brought off Jørgensen and brought on Ten Hove and Sigurdsson began his run-up and confidently scored from the spot..

And that was game over. We needed three goals now and we realised very well that our European campaign had come to a premature end.

The rest of the match is history. We played well enough, Jørgensen ended his long goal drought, Vilhena was named Man of the Match.

    If only...

    Spoiler!

And after the match Robin van Persie (37) officially announced his decision which of course came as no surprise to any of us at De Kuip.

And so all we can do now is refocus on the Eredivisie again as we will be playing FC Utrecht while Ajax and PSV will play each other in the Johan Cruijff Arena. But undoubtedly this European elimination will haunt us...

It all started so well indeed

Isn't that the second time Bijlow has been sent off this season?

RvP has served you well. Hope he gets to make an impact for you somehow as a swansong.

Unlucky, I don't think you have much option but to continue with Bijlow for now.
RvP must be on a big wage. I hope that you are going to offer him a coaching contract on reduced wages. (Sentiment can bugger off when it comes to football finances)
Time to concentrate on the league, and of course your 3rd and Feyenoord's 4th cup in a row. Do you get to keep it this time ?

Ten Hove (our backup for Bijlow) is a very talented goalkeeper.

The main thing now is that we qualify for Champions League football rather than ending in third place again!

Bijlow was banned for four Dutch matches the first time, but now only for one European match. It was hardly a foul this time.

    Samsami blaming VAR!

1st leg was the killer IMO - not getting an away goal now is always a worry

Even when Everton scored you then needed 2 more - always tough

Poor European campaigns thus far - some people would question how you would do in CL!

But - I think its a blessing for league chances - looking good for you certainl top 2 - and maybe even win it!

You don't always get what you deserve

After our disappointing European result we desperately needed a win but just like against Everton we were unlucky last night at the Galgenwaard Stadium and for the second time in a row the VAR decision was not in our favour.

We started the match with Crysencio Summerville replacing Steven Berghuis as right wide midfielder and that worked well enough, but some days you just don't get what you deserve. And this was definitely one of those days!

We were the better team and we created a few very decent scoring chances but then Niemeijer went down after a trip by Vilhena and Hansson struck the free-kick with dip and when the shot skimmed off the wall St.Juste scored a very unfortunate own goal!

It did not take long, though, before Janmaat put a low cross into the far post and Larsson smashed in low across the goalkeeper to cancel out the opener. However, FC Utrecht defended well and at half-time the scoreline was still 1-1.

We started the second half with Knoester for Botteghin and with Vente for Jørgensen. Both Botteghin and Jørgensen had received a yellow card and we did not want to take any unnecessary risks. And we almost scored when Summerville centered the ball from the right and Vente headed it down for Larsson who half-volleyed the ball on his right foot and hit the post!

Then, when Wehrmann also picked up a yellow card we brought on Clasie to replace him and soon after that final substitution Vente scored what looked like the deciding goal from the rebound! However, the referee stopped the game and after consultation with the VAR the goal was disallowed because Vente had strayed in an offside position...

We did create one or two more chances but Paes denied shots by Vilhena and Larsson and the match ended in a disappointing draw.

We deserved more. Not only did we score an own goal, but the post denied us a goal and the VAR decision was also not in our favour again. Janmaat was named Man of the Match for the third time this season.
    Spoiler!

And in Amsterdam Ajax unexpectedly humiliated PSV with a brilliant Kasper Dolberg netting yet another brace. It remains very interesting at the top of the Eredivisie table!

    Spoiler!

And so suddenly Ajax are the new Eredivisie leaders and PSV have dropped to third place! And what's more, we have to play Ajax next in our midweek game. And we shall have to play them without Daryl Janmaat.

    ouch. Should've won that one.

Now, the moment of truth. If we beat 020 we have a sure shot at the title. If we lose we're done.

Hmmmmmmm - not sure if Ajax winning v PSV was good for you or not? Guess a draw may have een better as both drop points?

Great referee name for the next game!

Tad harsh on you but looks like Utrecht got thier goal and were then happy to hold for what they could get - maybe if they were losing they would have come out more

Have to give credit to them defensively I'd say

We're quite happy with the referee to be honest. Especially for a match against Ajax you need a good referee!

Yes, well we lost 5-2 to them in our last meeting and considering their current winning run they are the favourites.

Yeah, I know. Amazes me every time. They sold almost all their best players and are still crushing the league...

I guess our transfer policy is restricting us from getting a whole lot better...

We are actually doing a whole lot better already. Just look at the goal difference. Last year there was a tremendous gap between them and us (+70 vs +50).

I know we are doing better. But without restrictions we'd be at least equal to them, if not better.

Perhaps, but we can never attract the same quality players they are attracting. Their reputation (16) is so much higher ours (12).

Well that sucks! Would have been nice to stay top, then face Ajax and build up a better gap if you beat them. Simply have to beat them now!

Jorgensen doesn't seem to be firing at the moment.

No, just 1 goal in his last 12 appearances.

No real damage done and at least you are playing well.
The next game is a big one. More a must not loose rather than a must win.

Our goalkeepers repel Ajax to earn stalemate

What a game and what a result! Both Justin Bijlow and Nicolai Jørgensen limped off injured as we held Ajax to a 0-0 stalemate in last night’s Eredivisie tie at De Kuip in front of a crowd of almost 60,000 fans.

With no less than eleven shots on goal (and eight of them on target!) it's a minor miracle that Ajax failed to find the net last night, even after Bijlow had to go off injured just before half-time.

But both Justin Bijlow (in the first half) and Ramón ten Hove (in the second half) played faultlessly to deny Ajax and between them they managed to keep a clean sheet with several important saves each.

There's no denying that Ajax had the upper hand, just like in our last meeting in the previous season when they beat us 5-2. Ajax attacked and created scoring opportunities and it was remarkable that we were approaching the break still with a 0-0 scoreline. But then Ajax took a corner and when Santamaria appeared to dive he hit Bijlow who picked up a knock and had to go off! And Santamaria only got away with a warning!!

We brought on Ramón ten Hove and he was immediately tested in the final minute before the break! Ziyech headed the ball down for Van Ginkel who stole a yard on Botteghin and skimmed one in hard but our young goalkeeper denied Van Ginkel with a superb reflex save!

We had a lot to discuss during the break and we started the second half with Verdonk for Malacia and with El Bouchataoui for Leroy Fer and this did seem to make a bit of a difference, but Ajax were still the attacking team. In fact, it was only because Ten Hove played so well and because Botteghin is back at the top of his form that we managed to survive Ajax's onslaught.

However, five minutes before the final whistle was blown we had another major setback as Jørgensen also had to go off injured! And to be honest, his injury looked rather serious.

But we did hold our rivals to a draw! And both Bijlow and Ten Hove played very well, but Botteghin with his superb tackling ability was named Man of the Match.
    Spoiler!

And because PSV simply defeated PEC Zwolle (2-0) in Eindhoven the Dutch Champions obviously stay in the title race.

And so, barely halfway through the season they are already talking about the title in Amsterdam. Why are we not surprised?

Hmm, you seem pretty pleased about it but that's not good enough imo to be challenging for the title. Appreciate it wasn't easy with the two injuries though.
