'Wonders' is a term that we reserve for trashing our rivals

But yes, we have never been this close to the title before - and certainly not by goal difference!

Absolutely! Vente does exactly what he has to do. Making the defence unsure about what to do or how to respond and thereby helping our midfielders to score more goals!

Definitely liking the new formation in terms of how you're controlling games but first big tests are coming up in the next two. Dispatch AZ and then bring on PSV!

Good result - the team can smell the end line now

For me - the next 2 games are ENORMOUS

4 points from them (and do well on the run in) and you won't be far off winning this thing

Are Ajax/PSV in Europe at all now?

Nope. No European football for any Dutch team anymore.

    The plot thickens!!

Based on match stats we should have comfortably won the game last night. Based on player ratings we fully deserved a convincing win. It just didn't happen, though.

AZ are in fourth place and with a ten-point gap between them and number five (currently Heracles) they have all but qualified for European football, so we knew in advance that it would not be easy last night. But we controlled the game just like we have been doing recently with our new formation and we should have been a goal up at half-time, only we weren't.

The first good scoring chance was for Malacia, but Schendelaar saved with a superb reflex stop. And our best opportunity came towards the end of the first half. St.Juste hit a 30-yard ball to Vente and our 'false 9' aimed for the run of Vilhena who hit a vicious shot - but he put it just over the bar. A world-class move, according to the commentator, but be that as it may, it was no goal.

We started the second half with Steven Berghuis for Summerville, but within five minutes we had a major setback when Boadu sent over a free-kick and Svensson jumped above Malacia and hit a bullet header at goal which came off Botteghin... who scored a very unfortunate own goal!

We did not give up, though. Berghuis produced a vicious shot for the top corner, but the ball skimmed the top of the bar! Wijnaldum had a decent opportunity, but he skewed the ball wide and when Vente blasted the ball towards goal it was parried by Schendelaar.

But then, with some twenty minutes remaining Botteghin hit the ball towards Berghuis in the area and our winger beat Bergsma with a nice bit of skill, took the ball on his right foot and buried it in the top corner! For the second game in a row Berghuis scored as a sub.

There were almost twenty minutes remaining and there were scoring chances for Berghuis and especially for Dylan Vente, who put it only just over. And with two minutes remaining Malacia had a great chance and he struck the ball with fury and scored! However, it was ruled out because apparently he had strayed just offside.

And a few minutes later it was all over. We had dropped two valuable points...

    Summary
Another solid team performance. We should have won the game but we were unlucky and Schendelaar was superb last night. Unfortunately, both Botteghin and St.Juste picked up a yellow card so that both of our central defenders will be banned for our match against PSV!
    Spoiler!

But the day did not end on a sour note because Ajax suffered a huge, shock loss at home to PEC Zwolle while PSV were held to a totally unexpected goalless stalemate by Heracles!

Obviously this was one of those weekends which make the football season so utterly exciting!

    Spoiler!

Now talking about mixed feelings! Here we are, dropping two points at home to AZ but nevertheless we find ourselves suddenly topping the table! If only we had beaten AZ today...

But there is no rest for the wicked. It's PSV next and we shall have to play them without Eric Botteghin and without Jerry St.Juste. And, also without Jørgensen!

Holy moly. Who writes this script ?

A win in the next game will become huge. Is it just 4 to play after that ?
Are you going to stick with the new formation ? Who do Ajax play next ?

Yes, there's 34 games in total.

Well, we played good, pressing football against AZ and we should have won game so there's no reason to revert back to our 4-1-4-1 formation now. Also, with Jørgensen injured we have no choice, really.

Ajax will play Groningen (a), Excelsior (h), De Graafschap (a), Emmen (h) and in the final game of the season they will play AZ (a)
PSV will play us and then TOP Oss (a), Heerenveen (h), ADO Den Haag (a) and NAC (h)

You shaded the game but with only 1 shot on goal more than the opposition not sure you can really claim you certainly should have won it

But what great news everyone else dropped points! It's that bit of luck that sometimes you need to win the league!

That should be the wake up call you need (if needed) before next game

Some may say win or bust................

    Matthias Sindelar?

    Gusztav Sebes?

I believe Sindelar is the first known case of a 9 playing in midfield to find space and defeat man marking systems, acting as provider and scorer.

The Austrian team he was the fulcrum for directly influenced the use of deep-lying centre forward by the 'Mighty Magyars' 20 years later. By the time Johan Cruijff came along it was a case of reinventing what had been done several times before...

PSV v Feyenoord and AZ v Ajax look like being the crucial games. Can't see any of the top 4 dropping points in the other games

PSV vs Feyenoord - Starting Lineups

Jeroen Zout (goalkeeper) and Jorrit Hendrix (midfielder) are both injured so PSV will start with Yanick van Osch (24) as goalkeeper.

Romero is indeed a prolific striker (with 27 goals from 32 appearances) and we'll have to deal with him somehow!

We will play with the same formation as in our previous five games, but with a makeshift defence. Jan-Arie van der Heijden will replace Eric Botteghin and Noah Lewis will replace Jeremiah St.Juste.

Jørgensen and Kökçü are also both injured.

No starting place for Berghuis despite 2 goals in the last 2 games ?

Want to keep him as an impact sub ?

You couldn't make it up! That's football!

I'd take heart from the performance, tactic is still working out as you played well and AZ were indebted to their goalkeeper for the point.

Hopefully being top will boost the confidence as you can get a victory to really consolidate that top spot.

Basically, yes. Summerville plays well, but he has his moments. Berghuis always played inconsistently, but he did well as sub in these two games when he scored important goals. So we will bring him om if needed. He may want to fight for his place in the first team!

I agree. There was nothing wrong with our performance. However, winning in Eindhoven takes more than confidence so a draw would already make us very happy!

Hopefully we can score a goal. Or even two! They will miss Jeroen Zoet and we will miss our two defensive midfielders, so it's going to be a challenging game.

It will start in about an hour!

Berghuis nets winner in seven-goal thriller

Surely last night's match at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven was the match of the season! There can be no argument about that!

Perhaps it's due to the fact that we were forced to play with a makeshift defence while PSV's goalkeeper was injured and had to be replaced by a less experienced goalie, but be that as it may, in stark contrast to the goalless draw in De Kuip earlier this season, last night's match turned into a seven-goal thriller!!

We started with one intention, not to lose the game! But that didn't mean we had come merely to defend. We have been playing pressing football lately and we have controlled our games these past few weeks and we had no intention to play any differently last night.

Both team started cautiously, though. But with just eight minutes on the clock Thomas Meunier's involvement in the game abruptly ended as he had to go off injured. Meunier is one of PSV's most valuable players, but they have Dumfries as backup for him. However, it was obviously still a bit of a setback for PSV.

Soon after we had the first scoring opportunity when Summerville had a sudden chance with a tap-in, but Van Osch beat the ball away. And although El Bouchataoui picked up the loose ball and drove it low towards goal Van Osch did well to parry it.

The next chance was for PSV. Maximiliano Romero got away from the inexperienced Noah Lewis and he continued in the penalty area. Romero hit the ball high and hard towards goal but he could not control the shot and it went well wide.

With eighteen minutes on the clock Romero had another scoring opportunity. He hit the ball with his right foot and Bijlow could only parry it. The ball fell back to Romero who hit a viceous shot, but Bijlow did well to save and hold onto the ball!

Now we created scoring chances as well. El Bouchataoui hit a savage right-footed shot, but it went just over the bar. Summerville had an opportunity but he skewed the shot wide.

But with 34 minutes on the clock Gutiérrez found Romero with a low forward pass and Romero ran at Janmaat and went by the challenge of our right defender. He hit a fierce shot and scored! We had been warned about Romero, but there was simply no stopping him!

PSV slowed it down a little now and we almost scored when Janmaat hit a viceous shot but Van Osch got across to tip it wide. However, in the final seconds before half-time Vilhena got into the penalty box, jinked past Koopmeiners and evaded Bergwijn's tackle before hitting the ball in low and he scored the equaliser! Vilhena is our current club top scorer and he remains invaluable!

After after the break we had a stunning start when Van der Heijden passed the ball into the area towards Vente who hit a bullet header at goal and scored and we were 2-1 up!!

But just as we were thinking that PSV would now need to score twice Onyekuru brought the ball forward and curled it into the far post when Vilhena took away Gutiérrez's standing leg! The referee never hesitated. He gave a penalty, Mangala stepped up confidently and scored from the spot and the game was level again!

Tension was mounting now and with a 2-2 scoreline and forty long minutes remaining we brought on Wouter Burger for El Bouchataoui, who was quite anonymous, and as we continued to try and attack Janmaat passed ahead of Wijnaldum in the area. Wijnaldum lost his marker and got a clear sight on goal; he hit attempted a grass-cutter but Van Osch did well to parry it. However, Wijnaldum was first to the rebound and this time all he had to do was tap in the ball into the net!!

And so we were 3-2 up as we brought on our impact sub Steven Berghuis for Crysencio Summerville and Mats Knoester for Van der Heijden, who had received a yellow card.

But with the support of the home crowd PSV were the attacking team now and sure enough, with just eleven minutes remaining Gutiérrez got the cross in from the right and Angelino completely out outjumped Lewis and scored a powerful header! PSV had drawn level again!

A draw seemed more or less inevitable now, but we had Berghuis! Two minutes after PSV's third goal Wijnaldum went down from a shove by Koopmeiners. We were awarded a free-kick and Knoester took a very long run up before sending the ball into the area. And Berghuis had the beating in the air of Angelino and powered a header at goal and found the net!! Van Osch could only watch and admire!

And our fourth goal finally clinched it! There was only final scoring chance for PSV, but Dumfries put the ball over the bar. We had defeated the Dutch Champions in the Philips Stadium!

    Summary
Unquestionably, this was the match of the season! A superb team effort and a stunning win! The five yellow cards were simply the result of the intensity with which we played. Wijnaldum continues to shine and scored his third goal since we play our new formation. He was also named Man of the Match again!
    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Ajax are back to their winning ways even though they had to finish their game against FC Groningen with ten men after Tagliafico had been sent off.
