Haps was indeed first choice for a bit, but he got injured. It's worth having a look at him again, though.

Great news on all the new deals

How long does Malacia have left on his contract? Is he pissed and wants to go? How much he worth?

Good stuff in dead wood going

Actually Malacia still has a contract for three more years and no minimum release clause.

He just "wants to be transfer listed" as he "wants to move to a bigger club". He's valued at 7.24M.

    Pre-season friendlies

We won our first pre-season friendly, against Swansea City, but what with a red card, a penalty and two our key players having to go off injured at times if felt more like a battle than as a friendly football game!

Still, you have to look at the bright side of life. Wehrmann was outstanding again and to the delight of the crowd both Stefan de Vrij and Tahith Chong also made their mark!
    Spoiler!

We also managed to win our second friendly, against Stoke City, and because Vente was injured we had Chong play as false nine, which was fine, but it wasn't a brilliant match.

All in all, a somewhat disappointing team performance. Malacia was anonymous, but Verdonk, Berghuis and Clasie showed that they are willing to fight for their place in the first team. And Kökçü also delivered again!
    Spoiler!

    Transfer news

Ajax sold Tagliafico to Atlético Madrid and Santamaria to Real Betis. So far they spent no money on transfers. They still have a formidable team, though.

Jeroen Zoet left PSV on a Bosman free transfer! PSV bought Maarten Paes from FC Utrecht to replace their experienced goalkeeper, but they will certainly miss Zoet this season!

    Our starting lineup against Heracles

Tomorrow night we will play Heracles in the Johan Cruijff Schaal with Tahith Chong replacing the injured Dylan Vente as false number 9 and with Mats Knoester replacing the injured Jeremiah St.Juste.

Sam Larsson will replace Chong as left winger.

Heracles will play an attractive 4-5-1 formation with three attacking central midfielders. It looks as if Wehrmann, De Vrij and Knoester will have to play together well if we want to keep a clean sheet tomorrow night!

Don't you want to try Jörgensen in the false nine role ? You never know, he could surprise you.

Yes, it's an option. On the other hand, he is getting on in years but we might still be able to sell him, if we don't wait too long.

We currently have Vente and Chong and El Hankouri whom we could still try out as false nine as well. And we are scouting Joshua Zirkzee. That's the future.

    Got lucky v Swans

Think you should be playing higher quality in pre-season now - not learning much IMO with those opponents

    Chong screenie please

Agree that Jorgensen could be given a go in new formation - easily getting forgotten

Good that Chong gets a denut (friendly) goal

    PSV losing Zoet is HUGE

Ajax not strengthening (is that 2nd successive winow/year that has happened now?)

Should be an easy cup win coming up

Last year Ajax signed Van Ginkel, Tete, Pjaca, Veltman and Musonda Jr.
Still not quite the quality of the players they sold, though.

As to Chong, he can play as attacker or winger (both right and left side):

Johan Cruijff schaal goes to Feyenoord

Bijlow and Kökçü keep their cool in shootouts

With Wijnaldum only just back from his injury we were still a bit rusty as we played Heracles Almelo in the Johan Cruijff Schaal. However, thanks to our excellent defence and because we kept our cool in the penalty shoot-out we could lift the trophy after more than two hours of suspense!

Heracles surprised us all last night. They started positively and played with a lot of confidence and it took more than twenty minutes before we finally produced our first shot on goal, but when Summerville hurdled over Van Hintum's challenge and curled one in from long range Wuytens cleared it off the line!

Heracles also had a couple of decent scoring chances; Osman volleyed from long range, but it went over the bar. And when Traore blasted the ball towards the top corner it went just wide.

Minutes before half-time we almost scored. Chong had a go on goal, Plattel could only parry it and the ball fell to Janmaat but Osman made an excellent last ditch tackle.

The second half was a mirror image of the first half. There were scoring chances for both teams, but Heracles had the best chances overall. Droste tried to bend one round Bijlow but he was denied space by Malacia and the ball went over the bar.

Wijnaldum also hit a volley from way out but it went over the bar and so with sixty minutes on the clock we brought on Calvin Verdonk for Malacia and Steven Berghuis for Summerville. And that seemed to make a difference. In fact, with ten minutes remaining Berghuis passed the ball into the penalty area looking for the run of Wijnaldum who got free in the area and unleashed a volley at goal and scored! However, it was ruled out for offside.

Five minutes later Traore hit a hopeful looking shot but it was well wide of the goal and so the match went to extra time and we made one final substitution: We brought on Kökçü for the fatigued Georginio Wijnaldum.

But both teams were near exhaustion now and less willing to take risks. Larsson hit a long shot but he put it over and Van Nieff almost scored for Heracles, but Bijlow made a superb save. There were one or two more long shots on goals but eventually the match went to penalties.

And after the first two penalties Bruns stepped up and took the spot kick but Bijlow made a magnificent full-stretch save! And so, because no other player made any mistake it was Kökçü who had to take the deciding penalty. And our young midfielder confidently stepped up and calmly sent Plattel the wrong way! We had won the shootout!!

Now perhaps it's more correct to say that we had a huge sense of relief than saying that we felt proud, but silverware is silverware!

    Summary

We did not dominate the game as we had hoped we would and arguably we were a bit lucky to even win the game, but we did, thanks largely to our water-tight defence. And so for the second time in four years we have won the Johan Cruijff Schaal in the Johan Cruijff Arena! Stefan de Vrij, who was absolutely superb, was named Man of the Match.
    Spoiler!

So this is already our second Johan Cruijff Schaal in four seasons. With the two KNVB Cups and last season's title that makes a total of five pieces of silverware, although some fans don't take the Johan Cruijff Schaal all that seriously.

And just before the Eredivisie season starts there is some remarkable transfer news as Ajax managed to sign PSV's world class right defender Thomas Meunier!

But of course the transfer windows is not closed yet! Still, no matter how you look at it, this is bad news for PSV and good news for Ajax.

    Starting lineup against Dundalk

Our next game is the Champions League qualifying match against Dundalk FC and everyone is fit and available for this first European clash of the season with the exception of Justin Bijlow who is suspended.

We will play with our best possible formation (as indicated by the shirt numbers) to try and win this first leg by a reasonable margin so that we can rest players when needed in the return match.

We know very little about Dundalk, apart from their formation and the players names. But that is hardly a reason to underestimate them as we know all too well from previous experience.
