    An evening full of emotions

It's not easy to summarise an evening full of twists and turns and late drama so let's relate last nights events as it happened.

    1 min:
The match of the season has begun! We need a win, but so do Man Utd if Roma would beat Barcelona tonight.

6 min: As was to be expected, Man Utd started positively and Kongolo was very fortunate that the referee did not show him a yellow card when he blatantly pushed Coutinho! The free-kick came to nothing.

9 min: Bad news from Rome already! Baptista has just scored an early opener for AS Roma! With this scoreline we would be eliminated from our group even if we would win our match, while Man Utd know they have to win now. Now we can most certainly expect them to play attacking football!

17 min: Fonsuh-Mensah out-jumped Malacia and headed the ball into the path of Matic, but Bijlow bravely collected the ball down low!

18 min: Messi has scored the equaliser at the Stadio Olimpico! FC Barcelona got the goal they deserved and we have a decent change again. We still need to win, though! But that did not take Barcelona long! Interesting, too, that Messi is playing for them again! And it was great goal after a superb solo!

25 min: IT'S A GOAL!! Lingard looked to spread the play to the left, but De Vrij nicked the ball from the toes of Rashford and chipped it forward to Wijnaldum. Our captain drove the ball into the path of Zirkzee who sprinted onto the ball and hit it in low and scored! Zirkzee is celebrating with his teammates. We are 1-0 up and with these scorelines we are through!!

27 min: Dalot sent the ball into the path of Martial who timed his run to perfection and was clean through on goal! He hit it in low, but Bijlow pushed the ball away!

28 min: Fosu-Mensah knocked the ball down for Phil Jones and Rashford made himself available for the pass, but Bijlow slid out and smothered the ball! Well done!

40 min: Well, it would seem that both teams are ready for a break. Nothing much is happening...

45 min: Bad news! Bannis had to came off after not being able to run off his injury. This is not good! Larsson comes on to replace the injured Bannis and Chong will take over Bannis' role.

46 min: Chong found Zirkzee with a pass into the area. Zirkzee advanced on the goalkeeper and hit the ball high and hard towards goal, but De Gea got his fingertips to the ball!

47 min: The referee blows for half time!

So we're 1-0 up and in Rome the scoreline is 1-1 at half-time. With these scorelines we are through, but there are another 45 long minutes remaining...

    46 min: We've started again.

50 min: Wehrmann lifted the ball towards Berghuis in the area and Berghuis headed it, but the ball struck the bottom of the post and went wide!

51 min: And Messi has found the net again at the Stadio Olimpico!! From a free-kick this time. So FC Barcelona are 2-1 up now against AS Roma who seem out of the race now. Nevertheless, we shall still need to win our own game, but this is very good news for us!

52 min: Malacia was tugging Martial's shirt and the referee showed him a yellow card!

56 min: Rojo held back Zirkzee and he, too, was shown a yellow card.

63 min: We are definitely under a lot of pressure now. Man Utd need two goals and they know it!

66 min: Matic aimed for the near post from the right and Rashford timed his jump well, but his bullet header was brilliantly held by Bijlow! Our goalkeeper is important for us again.

75 min: AND IT'S A GOAL!! Malacia carried the ball upfield and delivered it from wide, Zirkzee beat De Gea in the air and hit a glancing header and scored his 15th goal of the season! We are 2-0 up! It looks like an insurmountable lead. Man Utd have to score three goals now and at the Stadio Olimpico even a draw won't help AS Roma now.

75 min: Just 15 minutes remaining plus stoppage time. The crowd are elated!

76 min: Rashford desperately tried to score from distance, but it went over the bar.

77 min: AND THAT'S ANOTHER GOAL!! Malacia found Wijnaldum in the area and our captain set up Sam Larsson who found himself in some space and Larsson tried a low drive and found the net! That's Larsson's first goal of this season and it's 3-0 now! The crowd are already celebrating!

83 min: A free-kick taken by Dalot, but of course Man Utd know they are beaten and we are just seven minutes away now from qualification for the Champions League Quarter Final!

89 min: Another goal in Rome! Patrik Schick has scored the late equaliser for AS Roma. Of course we are still through on goal difference with these scorelines but the crowd suddenly realise we are not quite there yet.

    90 min: It's almost over!

90 min: And the referee has brought proceeding to a close. No time added on, which is a rarity. And surely it must be nearly over at the Stadio Olimpico as well?!

91 min: Three minutes of injury time in Rome. The suspense is growing!

92 min: No!! Another goal in Rome!! Two minutes and forty-five seconds into injury time Giovani Lo Celso has scored the winning goal for AS Roma! And so it's all over for us, after all!

And so it ended here. We won, but so did AS Roma. Our European campaign has ended...

What a deception! And yet it's a result to be proud of! We've beaten Man Utd and we very nearly made it to the CL Quarter Final. For the first time a European campaign to be really proud of and one that makes us look forward to next season already. But still, what deception!

A hard-fought win and a flattering scoreline. De Vrij played extremely well again, after his long dip in form. Bannis had to go off injured; Larsson was the impact-sub we needed and Zirkzee played fantastically and scored a European brace. But it's not enough...
    Spoiler!

And so all that remains for us now this season is the League. And with nine games remaining, five of them away games, we shall quickly have to refocus.
