Just not played your best when it mattered. Need to win in Lyon for even a Europa League consolation
No points at home has been the downfall

Winning in Lyon and beating Milan at home should do the trick.

    Easier said than done though...

If you win in Lyon you go above them and the table will look pretty much as might have been predicted before the start of the first match. Top two is still possible but from where you are now, finishing third looks like a good result. It was always going to be difficult though; this is a very strong group for this stage of the competition.

    Argggggh - last minute goal

They deserved it thoiugh sadly - strong team they put out and Laporte on bench

Decent effort from your guys and now 2 wins are needed - it IS possible but I'm guesing you need other results to go your way now which will be tough

    Horrible 1st stage group

Chin up for the league game

    Wijnaldum injured

    Breaking news:

Just when we need to fight for our last chance to qualify for the next Champions League Phase - or at least for Europa League consolation, as one pundit called it - our captain left training with a damaged shoulder!

This means Wijnaldum will not be available when we play TOP Oss, and most likely also not when we play Olympique Lyonnais at the Olympic Stadium!

El Bouchataoui or Wouter Burger will replace our captain.

Zirkzee brace gives us a win over TOP Oss

It's often hard to play a League game against mediocre opponents after an important European game but Joshua Zirkzee fired a first half brace to give us an important win over TOP Oss last night.

We played with our best possible formation as the Eredivisie title has priority this season, but we clearly missed our injured captain. However, after we had been struggling to find the net for over half an hour Naoufal Bannis found Joshua Zirkzee with a weighted pass into the area. Our striker latched onto the ball, turned quickly and advanced on the goalkeeper and curled the ball into the bottom corner, off the post, for the goal!

And less than ten minutes later Bannis had a go from a free-kick and although Padt did well to get his fingertips to the ball Zirkzee was first to the rebound and scored his fifth goal of the season!

In the second half Haps replaced Verdonk and TOP Oss made some feeble attempts to get back into the game, but Bijlow denied two shots by Parzyszek and he plucked the ball out of the air when Gakpo tried a volley with some topspin and that was about it.

Burger got some game time towards the end, as did young Tijme Wessels, but the game basically petered out.

    Summary
El Bouchataoui replaced Wijnaldum, but he was largely anonymous. However, the same can be said of Wouter Burger. Our lads seemed to lack the proper motivation but Joshua Zirkzee made the difference today. And every win counts!
    Spoiler!

At the Johan Cruijff Arena Ajax only defeated FC Eindhoven by a very narrow margin, which is even more remarkable in the light of the fact that PSV demolished them (7-2) last week! But then again, they did get the three points.

I heard people saying that if your keeper was captain they rarely make any saves, you seem to prove that wrong. Maybe it was a bug thatís since been fixed?

Bijlow proved them wrong. He always puts the critics wrong!

He will be our captain against Lyon as well.

    Important win after Europe

Very even game on the stats and you could have droped points today - but that great GK and solid defence and enhanced quality up top is the difference in this division for you

Yes, it looks like our team is strong enough to win the title but in Europe we struggle against strong teams because our attacking line (Chong, Summerville, Bannis and Zirkzee) still need a lot of maturing.

It's settling down into another exciting season, with yourselves and PSV currently on exactly the same GD. Effectively the pair of you are already well clear of the pack. Ajax can't go on dropping points all over the place though, surely?

Another good performance from the defense and from Hansson but we expect more from the young players in that kind of matches.

A little bit disappointing that they don't step up more this season.

Yes they did. I only report on PSV and Ajax these days when it's noteworthy.

It's all or nothing in Lyon

We lost our home to Lyon, just like we lost our game at home against Man City. But does that mean that we have no chance in the return match? Of course we do! After all, we beat AC Milan at San Siro so why couldn't we win at the Lyon Olympic Stadium?

And there's some good news for us. Lyon's experienced goalkeeper, Anthony Lopes, is still injured! Two minutes before the final whistle was blown in their European game last week Lopes had to go off injured, to be replaced by Jean-Marc Sahnoune.

This is a major setback for Lyon, who went on to comfortably win their league match against Stade Reims (5-2), but Jean-Marc Sahnoune - who just turned 19 last month! - did not make a very positive impression as he conceded two goals in his first ever full match for Olympique Lyonnais.

So the two minutes against Milan and the ninety minutes in the 5-2 win over Stade Reims is all the experience the young goalkeeper has had!
    Spoiler!

As for us, Wijnaldum is still injured and we will definitely miss our captain who has the technique of an attacking playmaker, the awareness and passing of a number six and the physical strength and endurance of a full back!

Achraf el Bouchataoui replaced Wijnaldum when we played TOP Oss. Like Wijnaldum El Bouchataoui also has superb passing skills, but he was quite anonymous in this match.

So Wouter Burger will play in Lyon and we will make one minor change in our formation. Burger, being left-footed, will play as left central midfielder so that Jordy Wehrmann, who is right-footed, will play as right central midfielder, taking over Wijnaldum's role. However, Jordy Wehrmann is not a playmaker, nor does have have instructions to try through passes, like Wijnaldum normally has. Wehrmann's instructions are the same as always, to move forward with attacking set pieces and help our defence with defending set pieces. Wehrmann's impressive heading skills make him very suitable for that task. But it does mean we play without a creative midfielder.

So on paper it looks good, but Lyon have far more individual class and they have the home advantage. So possibly their only weakness is their 19-year-old goalkeeper.
