Yeah money doesn't exactly flow freely in Italy... No price for winning the league, no price for winning the Cup

Orlando was one of our best and most consistent performer. His solo runs from deep are now legendary in Foggia

Thank you very much for the compliment Redders

    Foggia Calcio
    Season 2002-2003
    Serie C1/B

    Interseason

    Financial status

At the end of June our finances were largely in the red, with a negative balance of more than €3.7M:

At the eve of the season's first competitive match, the situation is slightly better due to the season tickets sales:

But in any case the transfer funds are a grand zero...

Despite this the board expectations are that the club attain a respectable league position:

    Staff and players changes

    Transfers in
None to date. We took a Guinean central defender on trial but he didn't convince us.

We are scouting a couple of other players who are available on loan, mainly central defenders, but no decison has been made yet.

On the free transfers market, nobody's standing out as particularly useful for the team.

    Transfers out
Nicola Mariniello who was out of contrat and didn't want to renew has joined Piacenza, as known since last December.

We have also sold high earner Giuseppe Di Bari to Pro Patria for free.

And we have very reluctantly decided to put Renato Greco on the transfer list because:

    a) he'll be 34 next January
    b) he'll be out of contrat next June
    c) at €49'500 per month, he's our highest earner

    Other changes
34 years old Daniele Vantaggiato who spent most of last season with our Reserves has decided to retire from professional football:

Since he was on a €18'250 per month contract until june 2005, that's a whopping €657'000 spared over 3 years. Thank you Daniele !

We've had a new intake of players from our youth setup and one of them seems particularly promising:

Since Mariniello left to Pacienza, he'll be the deputy to Di Toro in the DMC role even if he's only 17.

Two other youngsters seem to have some promises:

Both played a couple of minutes in our friendly matches and they will be slowly incorporated to the first team. Unfortunately Mosconi injured himself during our last game and is out for about 3 weeks.

    Friendly matches

This year we had the chance to play four friendlies before the Serie C Cup start. The results have been quite mitigated:

    Foggia - Sassuolo (C2) : 1-1
    Goal: Orlando

    Casale (D) - Foggia : 0-0

    Foggia - Palermo (B) : 1-3
    Goal: Eshun

    Marsala (C2) Foggia : 3-4
    Goals: Eshun (2), Orlando (2)

However we are not too worried by these average performances given the fitness levels in the team.

    Match preview

    Vs

Like last year, we start the season with the Serie C Cup group phase. We have been placed in Group O with the following teams:

Avellino and Benevento play in Serie C1 while our old friends Catanzaro and Igea Virtus are still in C2.

This first game against Avellino will allow us to know a little better where we stand, especially because the Campanians are in the same league group with us.

A couple of players who have fitness problems are rested (Zanutto, Catalano, Di Toro), otherwise we field arguably our best 11.

    Our lineup:

No new players then, only youngsters.

Vanni (17) has great dribbling, very possibly even freakish, but then what will he do with the ball? He has poor passing, poor decision making and poor finishing

Locatelli (17) looks more promising as DMC with his tackling (could also be freakish) and positioning skills.

Locatelli looks awesome. Positioning of 18 and only 17 years old? He also looks like a possible future captain. Not so good in the air and his passing needs some work, but he looks great otherwise.

There's still a lot of time before the transfer market closes. As I said a few loans are almost certain, possibly a free transfer if I can find a hidden gem.

Vanni looks interesting but has contradicting skills/positions. Locatelli on the other hand really is the typical DM (tackling 20, aggression 18, workrate 17...).

Really excited by the lad. I thought the same as you: this guy could become the next Foggia captain for many years to come.

    • Board a bit unrealistic – certainly a “stretch” target!
    • Trial – what do you do with them – play them in friendly games?
    • Loan market looks your friend if possible
    • Locatelli looks BRILLIANT – may as well give him first team football now!

We'll see. It would be a pity to be fired in these conditions.

That's exactly that. And if you haven't scouted them before, their skills are revealed in full.

Indeed that's seems the best (if not the only) solution to get a few new players right now.

Yeah he looks great at only 17. I do intend to play him in the first team right from the start, only he's behind Di Toro in the pecking order.

    Everybody likes Locatelli already

Let's hope his 'hidden' attributes are good enough for him to become a great player!

    Foggia Calcio
    Season 2002-2003
    Serie C1/B

    Week 1

    Match of the weekend

    Foggia 2 - Avellino 0 (Serie C Cup)

Goals: Eshun (40), Del Core (87)
    Assists: Torricelli
    Yellow cards: Torricelli; Ossari
    Red cards: -
    Injuries: -

    Report
Foggia started their Serie C Cup campaign with a two-nil win over fellow C1 club Avellino in front of 7'244 spectators at Pino Zaccheria.

After an even first half in which both teams had their chances, the Satanelli opened the score just before the break through Eshun. After a cross from Traversa was headed clear by a defender, the Ghanaian forward picked up on the loose ball and beat Avellino's keeper with a placed shot.

In the last 45 minutes Avellino tried hard to come back and Efficie had to make a couple of important saves. Foggia had a couple of their own but neither Eshun nor De Zerbi were accurate enough with their shooting.

With the time passing and tiredness slowly creeping in under the hard Apulian sun, the opportunities dried and both teams made all their substitutions. Del Core was the last one to be subbed in in place of Eshun after 77 minutes and it was he who scored the second goal, profiting from an excellent cross by Torricelli.

    Key points
    • An even match that could have gone either way
    • Excellent game from Efficie
    • Good debut from Locatelli

Zanutto is back in full training.

We continue to scout a couple of players, mainly central defenders and keepers but nothing decided so far.

    Match preview

    Vs

On Wednesday we head to Catanzaro for our second match in the Serie C Cup. The Calabrians have won their first two games with a goal-average of 5-0.

Catanzaro have caused us many problems last season. We drew twice at their home and beat them with difficulty 3-2 at Pino Zaccheria.

For this game we have to make a couple of changes due to fitness problems which means for instance that Traversa will play for the first time in central defense.
He'll be replaced on the right by Masangane and Bonatti plays on the left.

Di Toro is injured so Locatelli gets his second match in the DMC spot. Up front Del Core gets the nod over Eshun.

Some may say a fortunate win! An even game but brilliant GK performance!

Where do I recognise Kevin Franck name from?

Right, we were a bit lucky here. I'm a little bit worried over De Zerbi who hasn't seemed much motivated for quite some time now.

Kevin Frank is the young Belgian/Spanish we bought on a free last year. Or do you mean IRL ?

Yeah sorry for the lack of updates in this story.

Been extremely busy at work the last couple of weeks. And I wanted to follow on my other story.

Now I'm on holiday and flying tomorrow to Apulia with the wife for a one week vacation.

I'll take the laptop with me but not sure I'll have much time to write
