    Challenge 41 - A Race Against Time! - Part 2

    Challenge 41 - A Race Against Time! - Part 2

The year is 2020 and a global pandemic has hit the world forcing people to stay at home and postponing all sport in most countries! Sheffield United were on target to earn a European place before the crisis hit, the question is can you guide them to that European place?

You will take over Sheffield Utd for the 2019/20 season and making no transfers or loans try and finish as high as possible in the Premier League as well as go as far as possible in the FA Cup that they were also contesting when the enforced break hit.

This challenge has an onus on defence as well and so you will receive bonus points for every league clean sheet you record, while you will also be penalised for every goal you concede during the league campaign.

    RULES

    - March 2020 update (Saturn v9 can be used).

    - non wib-wob tactics only!

    - you must use a flat 3-5-2 formation (three CBs, a flat five across the midfield and two up front).

    - team/player instructions can be whatever you like, and arrows are also allowed.

    - no transfers or loans in or out are allowed, and you can't recall anyone already out on loan.

    - no staff hires are allowed either.

    POINTS

    Premier League

    Winners - 5,000
    2nd - 3,000
    3rd - 2,000
    4th - 1,000
    5th - 700
    6th - 600
    7th - 500
    8th - 300
    9th - 200
    10th - 100
    11th and below - 0
    Relegation - -1,000

    FA Cup

    Winners - 1,000
    Runners Up - 500
    Semi Finals - 200
    Quarter Finals - 100

5 points for each Premier League clean sheet
    - 1 point for every goal conceded in the Premier League.

    SCREENSHOTS

    - a screenshot of the final league table and how you got on in the FA Cup.

    - a screenshot to prove how many clean sheets you earned in the Premier League.

    - a screenshot of your transfers/loans in/out and staff in/out.

    Good Luck!

Can't wait to give this a crack. Interesting that you aren't allowed to shuffle your backroom staff either!

Sorry to be pedantic but is that 1 point for every goal conceded or -1 point for ever goal conceded?

minus 1, as stated the onus is on defence so you want to concede as little as possible, the more you concede the minus points you'll accumulate.

    • Messed with tactic for first month or 2 then settled on one
    • VERY much Jekkyl and Hyde – some fine wins but we got PUMPED quite a few times!
    • Seemed to go on runs of wins or a run of poor results
    • League – 8th – 300 points
    • FA Cup – out in 3rd round when we got superkeepered in a replay - 0 points
    • League Cup – binned it off and played kids
    • Clean sheets – 10 * 5 = 50 points
    • Goals against in league = 61 points (to be minused)

    Total points = 300+50-61 = 289 points!

    Added in above post

Looks like I released 1 fella at the start when I was going to make staff changes

No issues if DQ'd - I just enjoyed playing it

This one was a just a bit too tough and frustrating.

If it wasn't going well there wasn't much you could do as you were locked in to players and a formation.

I had a go and it was pretty clear half way through the season I was going to end up on negative points and I didn't think there was anything I could do about it.

A heavy tactics restriction AND a no signings restriction was too much. Maybe the normal WIB WOB with 2 wide players at least 3 at the back would have been enough.

Is recalling players who were out on loan at the start allowed ? Callum Robinson and Mark Duffy might be useful

    As the rules state mate,

    - no transfers or loans in or out are allowed, and you can't recall anyone already out on loan.

I decided to use TESTIRANJE (best back 3 tactic I know) as the foundation of my tactic, then removed all the wib/wob and added a few arrows to get as close as possible to the original. I came up with this

I looked at the fixtures and with the first 5 home games being Chelsea, Tottenham, Wolves, Man Utd and Leicester, I wasn't sure where the first points would come from, however we manage to hit the ground running and won 4 of those 5 (including a 4-1 thumping of United). Once I had my settled side, we became a very tough team to beat and settled into a battle for 5th, 6th and 7th with United and Chelsea. Liverpool were runaway leaders, with City, Wolves and Leicester clear for the other top 4 places.

I quickly ditched the League cup, the reserves losing 4-3 to Birmingham, but in the FA Cup we had some very favourable draws, Burton, Watford and Rotherham gave us a passage to the quarter final where we had no chance against Liverpool.

Back in the league, there was a total capitulation from Leicester in the second half of the season (lust after they beat Liverpool !) and we pipped Chelsea for 5th place when they could only draw with Liverpool on the final day.

Dean Henderson, Oliver Norwood (top scored with 16) and John Lundstram were the key performers. Defence was inconsistent and I never managed to find anyone who could hold the right wing role. Baldock, Freeman, Gribben and Mousset all tried and failed.

    Points …..
    5th place in League = 700
    Cup quarter final = 100
    16 clean sheets = 80
    34 goals conceded = -34

    TOTAL POINTS = 846

You mean the reserves? Yeah as long as they're at the club and not on loan anywhere then yes you can use them.
