How the mighty have fallen! Never thought I'd see the day AC Milan were expected to stay clear of relegation.

having a much better season 6 thus far with a counter attack direct style at half way point considering the overall quality of the squad being out of europe probably helps

post some screenshots later when i back on other machine

but on the off topic i noticed people that did the challenge previously and stuck strictly to the rules could not get a better hit rate for the strikers than 1 in 2 and it usually only for one of them. I looked back in previous seasons and Shearer getting 18 one season in all comps was the highest and saw others have same issue with really good renowned finishers

Even in season 1 with inzaghi and shev they both averaged just under 1 in 2 but shev did get a lot of assists for me also but generally it's tough getting them to be super productive so isolated

Ya I think the team make less chances with defensive mentality so striker rates will never be great

i do think though with other base shapes like 5 3 2 or sweeper or even a standard 4 4 2 defensive could be much more potent the issue isn't stopping the opposition as much it's just hard to create outlets without going insane with the arrows. Like even releasing a dmc or the wide players because it's defensive set they aren't gonna take the risks at the same rate compared to normal or attacking mentality anyway.

    Season 6 Xmas Break

    Settings

Defensive, direct, counter no press even though a lot of players are set to press in player instructions no hard tackling either. Still can't get the strike force to work better i think the one dropping deep should be feeding through balls and hold up ball but that doesnt seem to work well on defensive mentality so will change also wbs performing much better rating wise but still not getting enough assists from crosses or deep balls on direct.

One thing worth noting with arrows is that arrows pointing backwards only affect a player on the WOB screen. Sideways and forward arrows affect a player on the WIB screen. So as it stands you have your left striker running towards your right striker when you have the ball, and when you don't have the ball your right striker is dropping back in to the AMC slot to defend.

yah i have him on press dropping deep the idea was to hold up or thread through passes to striker but not working great by assists for forwards perhaps a creative player be better there with some workrate but then i wouldnt be able to play direct as it suits physical strikers better i think and defensive short passing is too slow in build up so its a dilemma really

drop deep in a defensive sense on press without ball as he is upfront with ball

extra body too and if opposition plays a dmc or even 2 midfileders that dont get forward its a good job for the team

    ya he pretty awesome

sneaked through @udinese in the cup they swamped me entire game playing uber attacking one shot from me and from a knock down from a free kick and my big greek centre back put the tie beyond them equalising with 20 mins to go man marked there entire team second half lol

    image bb

for 21 mins they didn't get near my goal on man marking after we scored equalizer the last 10 mins got pretty nasty though but they still needed 2 goals as we had the away one

Gave up after the cup semi defeat to Juve. Just flew through the remaining fixtures till the end of season had nothing to play for points wise except some clean sheets

Re-signed Maldini in the summer but he retired a few days later

The harder i tried the more i failed the glory moments of 8-9 clean sheets in a row soon come to an abrupt end then you are re editing tactics for new players replacing the declining oldies

But some oldies are golden Maldini , the Korean Keeper the Egyptian right back even Costacurta was doing a job up until he retired aged around 37

I look forward to never having to play 4-4-2 defensive shape with defensive mentality ever again!

Will submit scores now on in the other section as it's unliekly any of my players will win an award

    Season 6 score total

    Clean sheets (only) 17 = 85

I was naive enough to think the 4 4 2 defensive could work and i would stumble into a great tactic as the years went on but the opposite happens as the seasons go on with declining players and small transfer kitties

So I've actually had a go at this twice, about a year ago - first attempt ended in the sack during season one - aggressive selling of players went very badly. 2nd attempt went much better but I was frustrated by 2x UEFA Cup final losses and the lack of points that earned!

I thought this was a good time to take a fresh approach and go at this again. New strategy this time, having seen the money problems that can happen as this challenge progresses, I decided to try not to sign too many players too early and keep some of my best players for the majority of season 1. Here's how it went:

    Season 1

I only signed Panucci, Suker and Cesar Sampaio in pre-season, adding Desailly, Conte and Donadoni (on a free when he got sacked) in October. They cost a combined £6mil.

The initial squad started well and I sold some as offers came in, keeping key men like Shevchenko right to the end of the season (that backfired). We topped Serie A until December, when defeats at Roma and Atalanta de-railed us. Shevchenko's goals were key - he started the season with 11 in 5 games(!)

Second half of the season and Super Roma pulled away at the top of the league, we stuck in there and managed to finish 2nd place on 68 points, ahead of Juve and Lazio on goal difference. In the Cup, we lost to Inter 2-1 on aggregate in the semi final. The UEFA Cup was a highlight, we reached the final after a 4-2 agg win over Liverpool in the semi, then beat Fiorentina 4-1 in the final, Sheva signed off with 2 goals to finish the season on 44 goals in 46 apps.

So we raffled off the players after the season end, raising over £100mil. Now my error re Shevchenko.. somehow, despite teams being interested, no bids arrived, even as I reduced the asking price lower and lower, to £4mil!! In a panic, 2 days before new season, I had to release him, which Silvio somehow allowed. He went a further month unattached, before Middlesbrough(!!!!!) took him. Mad. Anyway, objective achieved, good solid season, raised good funds and didn't waste too much money. On to season 2...

    Season 2:

Lots of signings were made in the off-season, including all 1995 players I could get. Here's the list:

Lentini, Eranio, Simone, Galli, Stroppa, Mostovoi, Torricelli, Lizarazu, Bierhoff, Paulo Sergio, Canizares, Boksic, Schmeichel, Roberto Baggio, van Hooijdonk, Carrera, Carboni, Couto, Radebe and Leonardo.
Gareth Southgate arrived in Sept after he turned 32 and Alan Shearer came in October. He signed for Celtic in Jan of season 1 which complicated things, but I swooped in when he fell out with his manager. Total cost for this lot was £48mil, with Lizarazu and Canizares setting me back the most.

    Points:
Serie A winner! 100 pts. Won via playoff v Juve!
Italian Cup: 0 pts, lost final v Roma (2-1agg)
UCL: 0 pts, Quarter final, lost 2-1 aet v Bayern.
95 Players: 325 (All 13 of my players made their quota.) (Rossi, Costacurta, Galli, Maldini, Desailly, Panucci, Lentini, Donadoni, Eranio, Albertini, Boban, Stroppa and Simone.)
    Clean sheets: 28 x5 = 140pts.

    Total points = 565.

The season started with a Euro Super Cup win v Juve on pens, followed by a 3-0 home win over the same team in the Serie A. We scraped through our Champions League group with 3 home wins v Betis, Sporting and PSV, but carried on our good form in the league. A 2-0 home win v Roma was followed by a 4-3 classic v Inter, a Panucci 10/10 and wonder goal saw us take the win. Top of the table at Christmas!

We played well after the break, but our luck turned in terms of results. 1 point from 3 consecutive games v Juve, Lazio and Vicenza saw us fall 6 points behind resurgent Roma and 3 behind Juve. Meanwhile in the Champions League we dominated the 2nd group phase, topping a group of Celtic, Man Utd and Dortmund with 16 points. Our mid season blip was followed by a record of 8 wins and 2 draws from our next 10. Away games at Udinese and Roma, 3 days apart, seemed crucial. Shearer got a stoppage time winner at Udinese, we then pulled off a memorable 2-0 win in the Olimpico to hit the top of the table, 3 clear with just 5 games to play.

Meanwhile, we reached the Italian Cup Final v Roma and won 1-0 at the San Siro in the 1st leg. They overturned it late in the season with a 2-0 win in Rome - not to be. In the UCL, we won 1-0 at home v Bayern in the quarter, but lost out in extra time in the return. We missed Shearer's goals in the competition (cup tied) and our league success may have just affected us here.

The league conclusion was epic. A 2-1 defeat at home to Fiorentina, despite 18 shots on goal, seemed to have ruined it. We got lucky - Roma drew 3 in a row with UCL games taking their toll. Juventus sneaked in and we were level going into the final day. Us home v Parma, they had a tough away game at Lazio. Shearer scored on 4 mins, perfect start. Lazio also took a first half lead and things were looking great. We battered Parma. 17 shots to 4. But Sebastien Frey decided this was a good time for the form of his life and saved everything. Parma duly levelled the game with their first shot before getting the winner on 82 mins. Gutted! Lazio held on to earn us a play-off at least.

The play-off itself was mad. First game in Turin and we see the contrasting effects of goalkeepers. Buffon put in a 4/10 performance, his teammates don't do much better and we win 6-1. We lose 2-0 in the return, but Donadoni makes his 25th appearance of the season and I don't care. A dream season for me in this difficult challenge! Luck has certainly been on my side, let's hope it stays that way. Now to target European success next year..

Top performers were mostly in defence. Maldini, Shearer, Radebe, Desailly, Panucci and Canizares had the highest av ratings. Shearer top scored with 22 in 31, although Bierhoff and Boksic contributed with 14 goals each. I've just landed Batistuta for season 3, taking advantage of another manager row! This is where we are currently, screenshots will be available but I don't know yet how to get them on here..!

Amazing start to this challenge mate, seems you've shaped quite the squad especially with Batistuta coming in! Would be interested in seeing your formation
