Make sure you stick up your tips each day like you did for a previous tournament.

Bit easier to predict winners in this. There's some money to be made here I think.

Okay, well, my tips for today:

Canada - China. Canada will win (and this match will decide 1st place in the group).
NZ - Holland ... eeeeeep. Hard to say. If the Ferns can contain Miedema, they'll win. If not, Holland could pull a victory out. But I'll say NZ.

    My tips for the groups?

    A - 1. Canada 2. China 3. NZ 4. Holland

Today's match between Canada and China will decide who finishes first. Anything less than a Canada win will be a severe disappointment. China's still good, but not as good as they used to be. But they'll still be very tough for the Ferns or the Dutch to beat.

    B - 1. Germany 2. Norway 3. Ivory Coast 4. Thailand

Probably the easiest group to predict. Germany are the best in the world, and Norway outclasses the other two by some margin.

    C - 1. Japan 2. Switzerland 3. Ecuador 4. Cameroon

Also pretty easy to predict 1-2. 3 and 4 could go either way between Ecuador and Cameroon, I think.

    D - 1. USA 2. Australia 3. Sweden 4. Nigeria

Tough group, this. Nigeria could have a chance at second in almost any other group. I'm *hoping* that the finish is Sweden, Australia, USA, Nigeria, because then there's a good chance for a Canada-USA meeting in the round of 16 (and it would be here in town so I could go!). But hard to say. Any of the first three could finish anywhere in the top 3.

    E - 1. Brazil 2. Spain 3. Costa Rica 4. S Korea

Brazil easily 1st. I could see Las Ticas pulling something special out of their hats and finishing 2nd.

    F - 1. France 2. England 3. Mexico 4. Colombia

Another tough one. England might pull something off against France, but it won't be easy.

And keep in mind 3rd place is important, because some 3rd place finishers will qualify for the round of 16.

It may be a little easier to predict some things in this than in the men's WC, but the field has tightened up over the past few years. Nowhere near as lopsided as things were a decade ago (and light-years more competitive than women's hockey, where you have Canada and the USA, then everyone else miles behind).

Should defs be an exciting tournament!

Well. That was an exciting match, especially in the first half. But if I'm honest, Canada played like crap most of the day, and yeah, needed the penalty to win. But it was a very legit penalty, and 3 points is 3 points.

Disappointed the Ferns couldn't win, they tried, but the Dutch were very good - better than I'd expected, actually. But the Dutch goal was very nice.

    So, one for two on today's tips - Canada-China 1:0, NZ-Holland 0:1.

    So Group A today is:

    P W D L F A Pts
    CAN 1 1 0 0 1 0 3
    NED 1 1 0 0 1 0 3
    CHN 1 0 0 0 0 1 0
    NZL 1 0 0 0 0 0 0

Great first day that's just made me even more stoked for the rest!

    Today's tips:

Norway - Thailand: easy Norwegian win
Germany - Ivory Coast: probably one of the few cakewalk victories you'll see

Also, because everyone needs to see that Chinese free kick (or see it again), here's a highlight vid from CAN-CHN:

Very much a hometown penalty, China would never have been given it.

Dunno if it was just this match but if all teams play with the defences rarely moving 5 yards from the box, surely even a medicore team could exploit it by pushing up. It would take nearly 60 yards of the route to goal going by that game.

Ha. Both Norway and Germany are 200/1 On to win their match today.
If I put them in a double, I'd have to wager 10 to win just 10p!!!

I dunno what match you were watching, an elbow to the face is a clear penalty.

Shielding the ball and Canada player makes the most of it. 99/100 away team never gets those for them. Decent penalty though.

And another unsurprising result - Germany-Ivory Coast 10:0. The Ivorians were lucky the ref was very slack, they could've had half the team sent off.

    So, standings:

    P W D L F A Pts
    GER 1 1 0 0 10 0 3
    NOR 1 1 0 0 4 0 3
    THA 1 0 0 1 0 4 0
    CIV 1 0 0 1 0 10 0

That said still hard to say who will win Thailand-Ivory Coast but I think I'd put my money on Thailand.

    Tips for today:

Japan - Switzerland - Japan. The Swiss might surprise and make it harder for Japan to win, but the Nadeshiko will have it all under control.

Cameroon-Ecuador - Ecuador. Should be a good match.

Sweden-Nigeria - Sweden. Nigeria are strong, they could maybe pull out a stunner here... not likely.

USA-Australia - USA. Although fingers crossed the Matildas pull some magic off.

    So today's results:

    Group C:
Cameroon - Ecuador 6:0 - this surprised the hell out of me. I had expected a much closer match, honestly.
Japan - Switzerland 1:0 - not surprised at all, Fods you got the 1-goal differential right.

    P W D L F A P
    CMR 1 1 0 0 6 0 3
    JPN 1 1 0 0 1 0 3
    SUI 1 0 0 1 0 1 0
    ECU 1 0 0 0 0 6 0

    Group D
Sweden - Nigeria 3:3 - Wow. I'd expected a tough Swedish win, but Nigeria managed to make up for the own goal that started the scoring by catching up from 2 down and tying it in the last minutes... this makes this group even more interesting now. Probably one of the toughest groups I've ever seen drawn anywhere.
USA - Australia 3:1 - Well. Not *entirely* surprising, but a bit disappointing for me (even if Megan Rapinoe did net two goals).

Everything is possible in this group now...

    USA 1 1 0 0 3 1 3
    SWE 1 0 1 0 3 3 1
    NGA 1 0 1 0 3 3 1
    AUS 1 0 0 1 1 3 0

    Craaaaaaaazy!

    Alright, tips for tomorrow's matches:

Spain - Costa Rica 2:1 (but hoping for a Ticas upset)
    Brazil - S Korea 4:0
    Colombia - Mexico 0:2
    France - England ...jeeeez. 2:2
