    Saints defeat strong Ajax side

On Wednesday 25th November we played Ajax Amsterdam in front of a crowd of just 36,116.

Ajax started very well. They were not afraid and immediately created a couple of good scoring chances. Initially we withheld the pressure but in the 34th minute Vossen drove the ball in low and scored the opener! At that stage we still had not produced a single shot on goal...

But with the support of the home crowd we succeeded in pulling ourselves together and we got back into the match! Alexis Sánchez received the ball from Bender and he tried a right-footed volley and scored with a superb strike! And barely two minutes later Kongolo passed the ball into the area looking for Goretzka who was left with a simple finish and he found the net!!

In the second half we brought on Wanyama for Clasie, who had received a yellow card, and Rodríguez for Lallana, who was less than fit. Both subs played well and after Goretzka had powered a header at goal which went just over the bar we brought on Ward-Prowse to replace him as well.

Ajax had one more scoring opportunity when Verdonk attempted to blast the ball towards the top corner but he was closed down well by Kongolo and he missed by a mile. The very next minute we scored the clinching goal when Ward-Prowse struck a free kick over the wall from 20 yards out and found the back of the net!

So after a weak start we recovered well. Our defence was superb and Kongolo was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

Elsewhere Man City won their first group match, but Man Utd lost in Madrid and Chelsea lost in München.

We have to play three League matches now and after that it's the trip to Germany to play Borussia Dortmund!

Goretzka scores some goals. Must be in double figs already this season.

Also is it worth putting the table towards bottom of the post. Kinda gives the result away seeing that first!

A fortunate win at the Etihad

On Sunday 29th November, four days after we had defeated Ajax, we were very lucky in the Etihad Stadium in a match marred by three red cards and a penalty!

When Abdennour was sent off just before half-time we had not produced a single shot on goal yet, whereas City had half a dozen shots on target already. And the red card for our left defender meant that we had to bring off Alexis Sánchez and bring on Virgil van Dijk.

Without a striker we could do little but defend. But then, with an hour on the clock - there were still no goals - Guedes was sent off after taking away the legs of Kongolo! So now it was City's turn to bring off Bony for Romeu. We immediately replaced Clasie by Wanyama, but just when things began to look better for us Romeu scored his first ever goal for City!

That goal left us with very little hope. We brought on Rodríguez for Lallana, but at first that also did not seem to have much effect until suddenly Goretzka was brought down by Hart in the area!! Hart received a red card and Götze made no mistake in scoring the penalty!!

And before all the excitement had quite worn off Bergwijn played the ball into the area ahead of Götze who scored his second goal of the match! Once more the football gods were smiling on us!

A very fortunate victory and a much-needed one, too! Götze was obviously named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

The bad news is that Abdennour has been banned for no less than four English matches, just at the time when Bertrand is injured. This means that Kongolo will start as full back in our next few matches.

Lucky draw for Saints at Leicester

Just three days later, on Wednesday 2nd December we may not have won the match vs Leicester City but at the end of the day we felt almost just as lucky as we did at the Etihad.

With Kongolo as left defender we played well enough, but Clasie must have had some kind of rare off-day. So after an hour or so we brought on Wanyama, as well as Rodríguez and Ward-Prowse. And all three of them played well, especially Rodríguez, but we still did not find the net.

And then the inevitable happened. Toivonen was fouled by Kongolo backing into him and a penalty was awarded! Toivonen himself stepped up confidently and nestled the ball into the back of the net!

So after thirteen games unbeaten, we looked certain to see our run come to an end when Van Dijk got to take a free kick and Rodríguez won the ball in the air from Moore and scored with a superb header!! Götze even had a final chance as he smashed the ball in low, but Nicholis saved well and held the ball.

A rather bad day at the office, but at least we did not lose.
    Spoiler!

Now because Bender picked up his fifth yellow card today, he will be suspended for our next League game when we play none other than Chelsea.

Saints lucky against Chelsea as well

Another three days later, on Saturday 5th December we played Chelsea at home in front of a crowd of 36,101 and once more luck was on our side.

Without full backs Abdennour and Bender and with Sánchez and even Benzema starting on the bench (Benzema is almost fit again, and Sánchez is in need of rest) initially we were no match for Chelsea, who seemed very keen on revenge for last season when they lost the title race on that spectacular final match day.

And it hardly came as a surprise when Agüero scored after half an hour, only it was ruled out because Diego Costa had strayed fractionally offside. But then, just when it looked like we would last until the break it was Bazoer who jinked past Clasie and found the net with a fierce strike!

In the second half we had to take a risk and so we brought on both Benzema and Sánchez for Rodríguez and Lallana, even though neither of them were 100% fit. But although both players did quite well, for the longest time it looked like Chelsea would simply win the game. In fact, with four minutes remaining Rahman scored another goal for Chelsea, but once again it was ruled out for offside!

And then, just when people started to give up hope, Benzema picked up the loose ball and drove it in from an acute angle; Begovic saved but he could not hold onto the ball and Goretzka was there to apply the finish!!

We barely deserved this draw, but none of our fans cared about that. Forster was named Man-of-the-Match and he certainly deserved it!
    Spoiler!

Still unbeaten after all that luck, but five points from three matches just isn't enough with Man Utd having won their latest three League matches.

We actually beat them at Old Trafford (1-2) early in the season (before we realised how good they are this year)!!!

    Saints demolish ten-men Dortmund

On Tuesday 8th December we played Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park with Sánchez as striker and Rodríguez as left winger. Lallana started on the bench. Benzema needs more time to fully recover so we had him stay at home for this European match.

We had just dropped some valuable points in the Premier League, but it soon became obvious that today was our day! Alexis Sánchez got us off to a dream start with an early goal after Bergwijn had crossed the ball low from the right. Sánchez found himself unmarked, hit the ball in low and found the net!!

Obviously Dortmund still had ample time, but then there was this moment of madness from Elvedi who actually butted Clasie in the face! Obviously he was immediately sent off and from that moment on we had little to fear, although it took until deep into the second half before Rodríguez finally doubled our advantage with a simple finish when Courtois beat the ball away after a header by Bergwijn.

We then brought on Lallana and Ward-Prowse for Sánchez and Rodríguez and it was Lallana who scored our third goal with the assist from Abdennour. And after Wanyama had been brought on to replace Goretzka he also found the net with a great volley!

It is one of those days when everything we touch turns into gold!

A totally unexpected but very welcome victory thrown into our lap!
    Spoiler!

This same evening Man City also won their second group match so like us, they have six points now. Man Utd beat Porto in Group B, but Chelsea lost again, this time at home to Paris Saint-Germain. Their group of death is already living up to its name!

The next couple of months we can focus on the Premier League again as we shall not have to play any European games until mid-February.

Yes, that's absolutely right. But the result does mean that it should be a lot easier to qualify from this group now.

    Just had a catch up.

Nice qualification from the first group and now going well in the 2nd Phase.
Losing Sturridge and Banzema together doesn't seem to have slowed you down too much!
