The Road to Mexico '16
For interested onlookers, it's certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Mark Henderson since taking over and vowing to bring back the interest in the national team that has been lost following humiliating exits in previous tournaments including THAT defeat to Iceland and being eliminated from the group stages of the World Cup for the first time in 2014.
It all began with a thrilling 3:0 win at Wembley against Slovenia where the first signs of Henderson's selection policy were on display when Michael Mancienne and Tom Ince earned their first cap for England and the likes of Jack Rodwell and Ashley Westwood were included in the squad. It's worth noting though that Mancienne and Rodwell, as well as Ben Foster have not earned a cap since!
A 3:2 away defeat in Belarus soon followed but Henderson and co. were not panicking given that defeat and all 3 goals came following Fraser Forster's red card after 38 minutes. Indeed, England showed signed of spirit by scoring twice with Marc Albrighton and Benik Afobe scoring on their debuts. Also earning first caps that day were Aaron Cresswell and Lee Cattermole.
A reverse 3:2 win followed against Austria to set England back on the winning path thanks to a brace by Harry Kane and Cresswell scoring for the first time. Defensively frailties were highlighted with Austria scoring twice from their only chances on target.
That perhaps led to a change of selection policy as Henderson vowed to select players to suit their best position, having seen Ryan Shawcross struggle on the left-side of central defence. Chris Cohen was drafted in for Henderson's first friendly, a 1:1 draw against Belgium but didn't quite settle into the role. He, along with Jack Robinson and David Jones were making their debuts for England and perhaps the occasions got to them. Still, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was on hand to score an equaliser in what turned out to be his final appearance for England after since falling out of favour at Arsenal and failing to make the most of a move to Newcastle this season.
The first game of 2017 began well with a 4:1 win against Bulgaria who did have their goalkeeper sent off after 27 minutes. Still, with the likes of Ben Gibson, Conor Coady, Tom Carroll earning their first caps, they showed great professionalism to see the job through.
Sadly, the team lost the next two games 3:2. Gibson himself struggled in the second friendly meeting with Belgium although Jonjo Shelvey and Wilfried Zaha found the net in an encounter that Henderson felt England had edged. It's unfortunate for Karl Darlow that he started both games as a Chris Smalling red card after just 17 minutes helped Slovenia to win when returning to qualifying action. Darlow had been impressing for Bournemouth at the time but has since dropped off the radar after joining League 1 Fulham this season. Mark Davies scored his first England goal to open the scoring initially but although Kane added a second, Slovenia took advantage of the extra man.
England's best performance followed against Belarus, Danny Drinkwater scoring twice besides Nicky Maynard, Joe Mason and Theo Walcott in a 5:1 win but a 2:2 draw in Austria meant qualification would go right down to the wire. Thankfully, Andre Gray's strike beat a determined Bulgarian goalkeeper to ensure that England were off to Mexico!
Spirits were dampened somewhat by a 3:0 friendly defeat to France but preparations for the World Cup improved with a 3:1 win against Belgium before the recent 1:1 draw in the fourth friendly between the two nations. In reaching this point, Henderson has used 62 players!
Meanwhile, the domestic campaign has drawn to an end with Arsenal winning the league title by just two points, ahead of Man City and Everton. Hull, West Ham and Aston Villa have been relegated and shall be replaced by Leeds, Bournemouth and Brighton next season. Man City won the FA Cup and Everton won the League Cup on penalties. Leicester also represented the nation by winning the Europa League!

Joe Hart
Now 31 years of age, Joe Hart has accumulated 68 caps for England now but has been selected just twice. He ends a season with Man City having played 61 games and conceded 50 goals, with an average rating of 7.08.
Jack Butland
Still plying his trade at Stoke who finished 17th, 7 points clear of the relegation spots, Butland has conceded a disappointing 68 goals in 38 games this season but his average rating of 7.05 has seen him remain in the England squad where he has been selected 4 times. Overall, he has 8 caps for England.
Fraser Forster
Southampton's number one has conceded 53 goals in 41 starts but has an impressive average rating of 7.17. With 5 caps for Henderson and 10 for England altogether, he is the most selected goalkeeper out of five names who have featured in the sticks. Southampton finished 10th in the top flight and it'll be Forster's last season as he is due to join Joe Hart at Man City after agreeing a Bosman transfer.
John Stones
Capped 23 times for England, John Stones has been selected 7 times by Henderson and is included in the squad on the back of 41 starts for Everton with an average rating of 7.12. Everton have enjoyed a superb season, finishing 3rd and winning the League Cup.
Eric Dier
Eric Dier has been a steady performer for Tottenham this year with 34 starts and an average rating of 7.02. He has been capped 14 times but selected just twice by Henderson and will provide competition for Stones on the right side of central defence. Spurs meanwhile, finished 5th this season.
Luke Shaw
Selected 4 times at Under 21 level, Luke Shaw has now progressed to the seniors to feature 3 times for Henderson and already has 15 caps. The Man Utd left-back is expected to be first choice after an average rating of 7.23 in 47 starts where he chalked up 9 assists. However, Man Utd had a disappointing season by their standards, finishing 6th.
Nathaniel Clyne
Now in his second year at Chelsea, Clyne had enjoyed an excellent season at Liverpool which led to a £4.1M switch to Stamford Bridge and he simply hasn't looked back, being the most selected defender for Henderson, appearing 8 times to contribute to an overall tally of 24 caps. Chelsea are trophyless this season however, finishing 4th despite Clyne's average rating of 7.21 from 46 starts where he scored just once.
Moses Odubajo
Six years ago, Odubajo took in loan spells at Sutton United and Bishop's Stortford and few would have expected him to be heading to Mexico even 12 months ago. However, although Hull were relegated, Odubajo has been a revelation on their right, averaging 7.05 per game in 37 starts which was enough to recently hand him his first and only cap in which he managed an assist.
Alfie Mawson
Although Mawson has only been capped 3 times, he is seen as a regular fixture in the England squad having first been called up whilst a Burnley player. He'd been a £875K signing from Barnsley and played just a year before Derby snapped him up for £1.6M. Mawson has helped Derby to a 13th place finish and has scored once in 44 starts, with a whopping average rating of 7.43.
Ryan Bertrand
Southampton's left-back Bertrand missed 25 days of action at the start of the season which may explain why he has only started 29 games for the Saints this season but his average rating of 7.17 is enough to see him included in the squad for the World Cup. Capped 11 times, Bertrand has appeared in 4 of those for Henderson.
Ben Gibson
Chris Cohen has been overlooked to include Ben Gibson in the squad thanks to his average rating of 7.55 in 49 starts for Middlesbrough. Those games did come in the Championship though, making Gibson the first second flight player to be included in the squad. He has 5 caps, all from Henderson, and will of course be competing with Mawson.
Ross Barkley
It's been a difficult couple of years for Barkley as he has been overlooked for other players due to not doing enough to warrant selection, despite already being on 22 caps. However, as Everton enjoyed an excellent season, so has Barkley with 11 goals and 5 assists in 41 starts, lending itself to an average rating of 7.18. His form has earned two caps for Henderson recently, scoring once in the process.
Jordan Henderson
Like Barkley, Henderson found it difficult to break into the England team after getting 6.92 last season for Liverpool. But he's shaped up this year with 9 goals and 6 assists and an average rating of 7.11 in 46 starts led to 2 caps from his namestake to add, putting him on 32 caps overall.
Fabian Delph
Danny Drinkwater can consider himself unfortunate to miss out to Delph after scoring 3 in 3 games for England. He'd also scored 12 for Leicester but Delph fought his way back into the reckoning with a bang on average rating of 7.00 in 41 starts for Man City, who won the FA Cup and Charity Shield this season as well as finishing 2nd. Delph has 15 caps now for England and 6 of those have come under Henderson with Delph actually being the second most selected midfielder (behind Marc Albrighton).
Adam Lallana
Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck are the four players who have had a very poor season by Henderson's standards and that has allowed Lallana, who has 4 goals and 7 assists from 38 starts to be named as competition for Ross Barkley. Interestingly, Lallana has only played once for Henderson which was in fact in only the second game in charge from the bench but his £8.5M switch to Chelsea this year has clearly paid off. He'll be hoping to add to his 27 caps at the tournament.
Joe Mason
Henderson has bemoaned the lack of natural wingers in form this season and that's why we have seen Joe Mason emerge with 4 caps and a goal, thanks to scoring 17 goals in 52 starts for Wolves in the Championship where they have finished 8th, missing out on the playoffs only by goal difference! Mason, who could also have been selected by Ireland, is on the hunt for a move to a bigger club.
Nathan Oakes
Oakes is still a relative unknown having only made his professional debut this year despite being 22 years of age! The right winger seems to have coped well in the top flight as Newcastle finished 14th with Oakes making 22 starts, scoring 5 times.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek
The Chelsea graduate made a £1.7M move to Aston Villa last season and his form this year, despite starting just 21 matches has led to two caps for England, meaning that Loftus-Cheek was the first player to make the transition from the under 21's to the senior squad (without having already played for the seniors like Shaw). Unfortunately, it's not been a great season for Aston Villa who finished rock bottom in the Premier League and Loftus-Cheek is eyeing a move out of Villa Park this Summer.
Jake Forster-Caskey
After his surprise first call-up in the last Belgium friendly, though he did not get on the pitch to earn his first cap, Forster-Caskey retains his place in the squad to challenge team-mate Joe Mason on the left wing. The former Brighton midfielder had been a £550K signing for Wolves two years ago and has come into his own this year with 5 goals and 4 assists in 45 starts for the Champioship outfit.
Scott Wagstaff
Reading signed Wagstaff from Bristol City for £475K three years ago but this is surely his best season yet after an average rating of 7.32 in 53 starts where he's scored 5 and assisted 13 has helped Reading to finish 7th in the Championship although like Wolves, they lost out on the playoffs on goal difference. Wagstaff earned his first cap recently and gets his place ahead of Wilfried Zaha, Marc Albrighton, Mark Davies, James Ward-Prowse and Ashley Young who have all featured before on the right.
Luke Hyam
Like wingers, defensive midfield has also been a problem position for Henderson with Luke Hyam often included on the back of his performances for Ipswich. This hasn't been his best season in comparison to last year when he'd earned the first of his 4 caps but an average rating of 7.08 in 31 starts along with 6 goals and 5 assists has seen him included. Ipswich though, finished 23rd in the Championship and will be relegation so Hyam will no do doubt be looking to move on to keep his international ambitions alive.
Harry Kane
Still playing at Spurs, Kane has smashed in 32 goals in 55 starts which keeps him in the squad as England's main man up front. He has 26 caps and 14 goals but scored 5 of those in 8 caps for Henderson, making him the most selected England player along with Clyne and Albrighton.
Daniel Sturridge
Benik Afobe certainly pushed Sturridge close but the Chelsea striker, who joined from Liverpool for £9.75M last season, has just done enough to earn a call-up on the back of scoring on his first appearance for Henderson last time out. His average rating of 7.00 in 33 starts comes after scoring 9 and creating 7 for Chelsea.
And that's it, these are the boys that the nation will be following and it'll all kick off with England themselves facing Germany in the very first game of the tournament!

Good luck! Just one question, not a single GK over 7.17 in average looking at all leagues in England? And and only three strikers over 7,00? Seems pretty low or can you choose anyone you want as long as they are over 7,00 average?

I sort by valuations first then if their average rating is over 7.00, they're in the squad but even then, only if they've started at least 50% of the games that have passed so far that year. So that probably explains why the 3 GKs rarely change unless they're having a right stinker of a year
You can see quality around. Questions marks over Odubajo and Oakes perhaps but they deserve a spot based on their stats. Gibson, Mason, Forster-Caskey, Wagstaff and Hyam five players from the Championship in there though, time will tell if they can make an impact!

For a tournament as prestigious as the World Cup, it seems somewhat fitting that England and Germany are the two teams that face each other to kick start the competition on the 13th June.
For me though, it was a nerve wracking affair!
It was tough enough to be drawn into a group containing the Germans as well as Ivory Coast and Colombia but all I could hope is that the players I've selected who are in top form could keep up their good work from qualifying and recent friendlies against Belgium and bring that into the tournament itself, even in conditions as tough as those in Mexico!
The old nerves were triggered even further when Harry Kane picked up an injury during training in the build up to the game, ruling him out for the first two group games! It was a big blow to my plans given that a) he had scored five times in eight games for me and b) I had elected to name only two strikers in my squad!
Naturally, that would mean a start for Daniel Sturridge who did score from the bench in our last game, the 1:1 draw in Belgium where he'd made his first appearance in an England shirt for me.
The remainder of the squad was announced on the day with the goalkeeper and back four having a familiar look to it with Fraser Forster, Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand, Ben Gibson and John Stones selected. They'd all played in at least five games for me now with this Germany game being my 14th game in charge.
The midfield had a different feel to it. Joe Mason was making his 5th cap on the left wing but the trio of Ross Barkley, Jordan Henderson and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were selected for only the third time whilst Scott Wagstaff got the nod to start on the right wing.
The Germans themselves named a strong side which included stalwarts Manual Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller. We were in for a stern test!
What is it about the Germans that they always seem to have a hold over us?
Hopes of pulling off a surprise were heightened when we looked decent to begin with, seeing a cross from Henderson met by a header from Mason which went over the bar.
But on the 20th minute, Leroy Sane's shot on the volley gave them the lead and things went from bad to worse just 10 minutes later when Ruben Loftus-Cheek lost his head, pushed Stendara in the chest and was issued a red card.
How do we react after that? In fairness, we saw the rest of the first half out admirably but suffered another blow when Scott Wagstaff had to go off with a foot injury just before half time! Nathan Oakes came on in his place.
Germany scored almost immediately after the break through Muller and also had one disallowed. Muller capped a 3:0 win by scoring his second of the game and that was that.
Colombia beat Ivory Coast 2:0 later on in the evening which leaves us firmly rooted to the bottom of Group A.

The World Cup campaign may have had a disastrous start for England after THAT 3:0 defeat to the Germans in the opening match of the tournament. However, there was still a sense of optimism in the air that qualification, certainly via second place, was still a possibility. It was always going to be a big ask that the team could hold off the power of Draxler, Muller, Sane and co when they had been left with 10 men thanks to the stupidity of Ruben Loftus-Cheek!
The Aston Villa midfielder was obviously banned for the next match which takes place against Ivory Coast in San Nicolas de los Garza at the stadium locally nicknamed 'El Volcan'!
Winger Scott Wagstaff had also broken his toe against Germany and joins Harry Kane on the treatment table although Kane was named on the bench anyway, given that he was 90% fit. The question on everyone's minds would be whether we'd gamble on featuring Kane but Daniel Sturridge was tasked to the lead the line once more. As expected, Luke Hyam and Nathan Oakes take over from Loftus-Cheek and Wagstaff.
John Stones, Jordan Henderson and Joe Mason had all been poor against Germany and so it was all change with Eric Dier, Fabian Delph and Jake Forster-Caskey coming into the team, the latter handed his debut in a big, big game for England!
With Henderson dropped, the incoming Delph was the captain for the game against an Ivory Coast side that featured Serge Aurier, Eric Bailly, Yaya Toure, Salomon Kalou, Wilfried Bony and even Gervinho!
A rousing team speech in the dressing room sent us out on to the pitch in good spirits. The team knew they had to work hard for a win to keep our hopes alive of qualification and Forster-Caskey showed no sign of any nerves to send a shot wide early on.
Then came a goal from Ben Gibson! Bailly was booked and gave a free-kick away. Barkley lined it up but the wall deflected it. Dier hit it at goal and Sayouba could only turn it into the path of Gibson who celebrated wildly! The Middlesbrough defender had come in for some criticism after being preferred to Alfie Mawson recently.
Toure joined Bailly in the ref's notebook after catching Barkley in the air whilst Oakes could consider himself unlucky not be awarded a penalty when brought down by Djakpa. He then had a chance to score after great work from Forster-Caskey but Sayouba saved it.
It didn't matter though as we soon doubled our lead. A free-kick from Dier was delivered with perfection into the box where Sturridge got his head on the ball to put us 2:0 up in the 27th minute!
We seemed to be cruising at that point so it was a bit of a sucker punch when Ivory Coast sprang to life with Bony sending a shot narrowly over the bar before Hyam lost possession to Bailly who knocked it on to Gervinho. The ex-Arsenal man worked his was past Clyne before delivering the ball into the box for Bony to knock first time into the net past Forster.
The timing of the goal could not be better for them, scoring just before the break. It took the winds out of our sails a bit but all we had to do was go back out there in the same manner for the second half and get at them. The offensive midfielders were enjoying the game and needed to keep that going to restore our lead.
Thankfully, much to my relief, they did just that. Sturridge won us a free-kick after a one-two with Forster-Caskey, being pushed over by Kanon. Barkley struck the ball from 20 yards out and it simply flew into the net!
11 minutes later, it was game over for Ivory Coast as Barkley took the ball 25 yards, beating Djakpa for pace before rocketing the ball home!
We saw the rest of the game out easily as Lallana and Stones came on Barkely himself and Dier. Bertrand and Hyam picked up bookings though as we kept breaking up play to ensure that victory was ours!
To nobody's surprise, Germany beat Colombia 1:0 which puts us 3rd on goal difference. It's in our hands now as we simply have to beat Colombia to get out of the group stages.

It's not just based on the last game though, form is dictated by the last 5 games in CM so would seem fairer that way.

Do they await with expectation, anticipation or just nervousness?
No-one can quite put their finger on their feelings for a game in which England must win to progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup. I certainly know what the FA expects, having outlined the objective to make it into the second round, something that I definitely feel is achievable on the back of a fantastic 4:1 win over Ivory Coast.
Colombia wouldn't be an easy game though, for they too beat Ivory Coast (2:0) whilst holding Germany to only a one goal deficit in the other group game. They also boast the likes of James Rodriguez, Falcao and Carlos Bacca in their squad! Their manager appears to have a full squad to choose from!
As for England, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Harry Kane were both back and available for selection. Scott Wagstaff had returned to training but was nowhere near fit enough to participate. Loftus-Cheek was named on the bench but Harry Kane went straight into the starting eleven. That's not because Daniel Sturridge was dropped or anything, far from it. Sturridge had injured his jaw in training in the build-up to the game and rather than aggravating it, he was named on the bench with Kane starting in the only change to the team that defeated Ivory Coast.
It's a testament to their performance that the team remains unchanged, striker excepted. Forster-Caskey and Oakes may not be household names but they'd definitely played their part in helping Ross Barkley to shine.
This time, we were asking Kane to get us a goal and it'd be nice to score early on to settle the nerves too. Kane had a chance but put a header from Hyam's cross over the bar. Colombia responded with Montano denied by a Forster save.
Delph copied Kane in headnig wide before Ospina parried away a shot from Oakes. Barkley had a great opportunity to play the ball into the net beyond Ospina but blazed it over the bar. That could be a costly shot and Barkley knows it.
He soon had another chance but after a one-two with Forster-Caskey, dribbling past Mojica, Barkley could only send his shot wide.
James Rodriguez had a free-kick on target which Forster tipped wide then England countered with Clyne working his way up to the pitch for a powerful shot which Ospina managed to hold. Colombia then went up the other end and saw his low drive go wide.
It was truly end to end stuff now. Good play from Delph saw Oakes square the ball to him but Delph's vicious shot rattled back off the bar!
Determined to get their goal, England worked up the left flank next. Bertrand passing forward to Forster-Caskey who looked up, spotted the run of Kane and crossed the ball perfectly for Kane to nod into the goal!
The goal came just before half-time which was timely. All England had to do now was hold onto the lead and they were through! Muriel won a free-kick after a foul from Delph and Forster had to save well from Rodriguez's effort.
A half-volley from Forster-Caskey and a header from Kane reminded Colombia that England weren't giving up easily. But England's wasteful finishing was punished in the 68th minute when Arias was allowed to run free past Hyam and into the area before crossing to the back post where Muriel waited to head into the net.
The goal put Colombia back into second to qualify and England made a change with Delph replaced by Jordan Henderson. Oakes tried a shot from long distance but it went wide.
Vergara took over from Murillo for Colombia whilst Dier was injured and had to be replaced by Stones, with Luke Shaw also taking over from Bertrand.
The changes did nothing to change the game as England only saw Barkley drive a free-kick into the wall and Colombia's Montano volleyed wide. Rodriguez was replaced by Pardo as a time wasting substitution and as the full-time whistle blew, Colombia were the ones celebrating and going through.
It seems harsh that despite only one defeat, England go home with a worse goal difference. The question is though, would Mark Henderson be given another chance?
The answer arrived shortly after South Korea won the World Cup against the odds with a 2:1 win over Spain in the Final!
