There was absolutely no time for the Vipers to dwell on the defeat at the Bescot Stadium in Walsall. There was only a light recovery session on the Sunday afternoon before the players had to report to Vipers HQ for the visit of Southend on Monday night. Playing so soon meant that Craig Forrest, Baz, Dermotron, PedroM, gazzas1uk, Redknapp69, Bevchenko and AJ were all looking in need of a rest for this one. In addition, the performance of Felix (and 5 of the unfit players) meant that The Gaffer was looking to make up to 9 changes.

When the team sheet was announced, it transpired that the Vipers boss was only able to make 6 changes. ebfatz, evesham, colml, pyromyst and drkshadow1 came in as like for like changes for Craig Forrest, gazzas1uk, Redknapp69, Bevchenko and Felix. But with trunky injured, Baz was forced to continue at left-back and the same applied to Dermotron and AJ with their competitors being missing. Meanwhile, PedroM had failed to show up for the game and with BobMem unavailable due to injury and vinjwoods continuing to be AWOL, GFRay was asked to play out of position at centre-back.

Of course, the Vipers weren't the only team being asked to play so soon after the weekend. Their rivals for top spot were also in action with Sheffield United playing away at Millwall whilst Charlton are away at Fleetwood.

The pundits were tipping this one as a draw, despite Southend being 19th and having only won 14 in 43 games so far this season. The reasoning was simple, the two teams first met last year and drew both fixtures. They've also drawn their fixture earlier this season as well as seeing an EFL Trophy match end 0:0, though Southend won on penalties.

Hopefully the Vipers could end that sequence with a much needed victory and hope that Millwall will do them a favour against Sheff Utd. They certainly started the game in style as colml collected a loose ball early on in the game, playing it to evesham's feet. evesham played it into the area for pyromyst and though Dymond robbed pyromyst of the ball, the loose ball was then collected by AJ who had no hesitation in driving the ball into the net to put the Vipers ahead!

Meanwhile, Fleetwood had taken an early 2:0 lead against Charlton which is a result that would be enough to ensure that the Vipers are promoted. But at Millwall, Sheffield United had scored twice in 12 minutes.

This was looking like the Vipers of old, a dominant display with chances for the team as Smith beat away a shot from hornbloweroafc and denied pyromyst with a shot on the bounce a few minutes later. Dermotron also came close at a corner, blasting the ball at goal when evesham knocked it on from pyromyst's delivery but Smith parried it and Timlin cleared it away.

It wasn't until the 34th minute when Hines powered a header over the bar in Southend's first clear chance but Baz had done well to put the striker off. Meanwhile, Kowalinho was drawn into his first save moments later when Robinson smashed in a low shot.

The Gaffer was looking for a second goal to settle his nerves and his players were trying. A had a shot off target, colml saw a rebounded effort saved and pyromyst aimed for the top corner which Smith again saved before the half-time interval arrived.

What were the other scores at this point? Well, Charlton had pulled one back to make it 2:1 at Fleetwood which means that the Vipers were still on course for promotion as it stands! As for Sheffield United, Millwall had also pulled one back so could they be on track to deny Sheffield United victory?

Urging the players to focus on their own game and seal three points over Southend, The Gaffer sent the players back out there with both Baz and AJ having had extra treatment from the physiotherapist to get through the next 45 minutes.

Southend were the first to threaten, Robinson connecting with Fortune's cross but he sent the ball high into the stands. Robinson was then replaced in the 49th minute as Simon Cox came on in his place.

Then came a good spell for the Vipers as hornbloweroafc and pyromyst combined to create space for evesham to have a shot from the right but his shot hit Nditi. Pouncing on the ball, drkshadow1 went down under pressure from Leonard but the referee was having none of it!

But there was good news at Millwall as they had equalised against Sheffield United, to make it 2:2!

Things looked even better for the Vipers as pyromyst embarked on a piece of magic. He beat Timlin for pace before nutmegging Dymond on his way into the box. Finding that space, he fired low and hard into the bottom corner to double the lead for the Vipers!

hornbloweroafc nearly repeated the feat himself, playing a ball past Fortune and turning away from his before attempting a lofted effort over Smith to which the goalkeeper got back just in time to stop the ball going into the net.

Meanwhile, the Vipers supporters started a party in the stands as they learned that Fleetwood had scored to make it 3:1 against Charlton with 21 minutes left to go!

The Gaffer made a triple change with 3 of his players tiring. Bevchenko, ZanSnake and gazzas1uk all came on with pyromyst, hornbloweroafc and evesham being replaced to applause from the fans.

The game was dying down now as Southend couldn't find a way past the Vipers. The promotion party was punctured slightly as Sheffield United scored a third goal to put themselves back in the lead with 11 minutes to go.

But as full-time approached, there was still no more action going on to speak of at the Snake Pit and the biggest cheer of all arrived as Millwall did it again, they'd equalised in the 88th minute to hold Sheffield United to a draw!

With the referee blowing for full-time, the supporters ran on to the pitch to celebrate their promotion! But not just that, the Vipers had finally overtaken Sheffield United to top the league table for the first time this season!

Great win lads and gratz to ourselves with the promotion!

And now we need to win that league as well!

On a personal note: 85% pass completion, won my only tackle which also was a key one and won my only header. Still I get a 6 as only one in the squad!!

Great write up Mark, very gripping as the drama unfolded at Fleetwood and Milwall with the results going our way
Fantastic team performance all around guys. Poor Ray didn't deserve a 6 just for playing out of position, he had a solid game.
*would like gazzas back at DMC for the final 3 games

Who are our last 3 fixtures against Gaffer?
