My local club, and they could do with a bit of a lift. It has been dark days recently, so anything that you can do will help.

An increase in attendances would also help my wife's school, which opens their carpark on matchdays to get cash which they give to Derian House Childrens Hospice

    Jeremain Lens joins Blackburn Rovers

Sunderland's Jeremain Lens has signed a four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers! Lens is a versatile attacking player, known for his pace and stamina, and is primarily used as a winger or a striker, but he can also successfully play as a second striker.

Lens was supposed to join Turkish club Fenerbahçe on loan, but in the end he opted for Rovers, instead.

With Lens we have the player to replace Jordan Rhodes, "the goal machine ignored by Premier League sides".
    Spoiler!

You only signed him because he's Dutch

Decent enough player to join you for the level Blackburn are at but can't help thinking you could have invested in a few players for that fee.

    Focus is on Lens (sorry)

He is a solid first signing, but quite a big investment

    Funny boy 😊

He is cheaper than Rhodes though.

    Disappointing draw in opening match

On Saturday 13th August a crowd of 16,546 witnessed a decent Rovers performance in the opening match of the season, but unfortunately there were no goals. Conway, who replaced the injured Bennett, had four shots on goal (two more than Lens managed) and he actually came very close when he hit the post in injury time, but nevertheless a goalless draw was the disappointing result.

Akpan was named Man-of-the-Match but Lens was invisible in his first appearance. But at least we kept a clean sheet.
    Spoiler!

Hopefully we'll do better in our next match away against Hudderfield and then at home against MK Dons in the EFL Cup 1st Round. Bennett will be back from his injury in time to replace Conway then.

Ben Marshall, what a wasted talent that lad is..

Was set for Crewe's first team when he left with Matty Lund to go to Stoke when Steve Holland moved there..

Could be just me but the sceenshots don't work?

Aye, I remember we had high hopes for Ben Marshall but he chose to leave us, joining Leicester instead when we offered him a new contract.

Still carving out a decent career for himself at Blackburn though.

I'm surprised that Gordon Greer gets a start ahead of Charlie Mulgrew. Maybe it is different, but IRL Mulgrew is worth starting even just for his freekicks.

Thanks. Mulgrew will get game time soon. This is the year to test out all the players.

Lens scores his first goal for Rovers

On Saturday 20th August we played Huddersfield at the John Smith's Stadium.

Adam Henley was Man-of-the-Match against Huddersfield

And this time Lens did score! He picked up the loose ball after Murphy had pushed it away and scored his first goal for Blackburn with just six minutes on the clock!

The game was more or less in balance and there was always the danger of Huddersfield cancelling out that early opener, but in the end Mulgrew - who had replaced Lowe sometime in the second half - aimed a corner at the far post and Henley blasted the ball towards the top corner and scored our second goal to clinch the match.

A somewhat fortunate win perhaps, but three important points for us in an away match. Henley was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

Rovers eliminate MK Dons from the League Cup

Three days later we beat MK Dons in the EFL Cup first round with goals scored by Evans and Byrne and with Gordon Greer playing his best game so far.

It was Evans' first appearance of the season and Mulgrew also played the whole game this time - and he played very well indeed - but as we outplayed our League One opponents it was actually Greer who was named Man-of-the-Match.

A comfortable victory and yet another clean sheet. So far, so good.
    Spoiler!

So we had a good week and quite a good start of the season and who knows what this season will bring! A lot will probably depend on how well Lens performs.

How much cash did you start off with?

£5m seems a chunk for Lens and suprised he joined you

Rhodes currently in prem and not really doing much IRL (to be fair do not think he is playing first team much)

Unlucky v Wigan - looks like you deserved the points there

How come Liverpool's Danny Ward was not in goal for on loan Huddersfield?

Give Marvin Emnes some minutes, grafts hard and seems to come up with a goal or some action

    Solid cup progress

    (1) We started off with just over £7M and spent £5M on Lens. That is a lot but it's part of my plan. We needed a striker that the other players would respect and yes, I was surprised as well that Lens was interested in joining. I think he will prove to be worth the money we invested in him.
    (2) Danny Ward was injured when we played them (Huddersfield, that is)
    (3) Emnes deserves game time (after all he is Dutch), but so does Sam Gallagher. We'll see!

    Rovers still undefeated

On Saturday 27th August we played Derby County - who had won both of their league games so far - in front of a crowd of 18,970 and our winning run continued!

Dannie Guthrie replaced Jack Byrne in the 2nd half and was named MoM.

Once more the game was in balance, and once more luck was on our side when first Lowe and then Evans scored just after the break. Derby's consolation goal came much too late, in injury time.

And so our winning run continues. Emnes actually got some game time after Lens had been presented with a yellow card, but unfortunately he failed to make an impression.
    Spoiler!

Rovers drop points at Elland Road

Barely two days later, on Saturday 29th August we already had to play Leeds United at Elland Road. And perhaps our lads were still tired, and we actually did give Byrne and Ward rest, but we clearly struggled to stay in the game. However, when first Bennett and then Marshall (who had just come on to replace Henley) both found the net early in the second half, it seemed as if history was going to repeat itself.

However, Cooper's goal in the 83th minute turned out to be more than a consolation goal when Murphy managed to find the net with a simple finish less than five minutes later. A bit of a blow for us.....

Although Leeds certainly deserved a point, if not more, it still very much felt like we unnecessarily dropped two points to-day.
    Spoiler!

Nevertheless, we are encouraged at the start we have made and things still look promising.

Lots of players getting on the score sheet. Seems like a different name each game. (Total football comes to Lancashire ... not sure what the locals would make of that, Blood and snotters is more their style)

Nobody making much of a move in the league yet

The local might start demanding 'blood and snotters' when the results are not what they are expecting. But that's okay. We're used to that at Feyenoord.

Only 4 games in but it looks like you may have the base of a squad that could compete for promotion.

I think Hope Akpan could be an underrated player for you, love a DMC who can put in good average ratings.

Yeah that's exactly how it felt

But the fact that we beat Derby means a lot at this stage, I think.

    Rovers beat Rotherham

On Saturday 3rd September we beat Rotherham in front of a crowd of 15,103.

Lens was important again. He scored the deciding goal and was named Man-of-the-Match.

It was supposed to be one of the easier games of the season, but we don't score too many goals and besides, Camp was superb to-day.

However, Lens managed to score the all-important goal. After collecting the ball and being chased by Kelly he only had the advancing Camp to beat and he made no mistake! It was Lens' second goal of the season and an important one at that.

We should have scored a second goal so that the game would have been decided in the first half, but at least it's three points in the bag again.

Tom Hoban played a brilliant game as left defender.
    Spoiler!

Villa prove too strong for Rovers

On Friday 9th September we faced Aston Villa at Villa Park, Birmingham, in front of a crowd of 38,252 !! Obviously Aston Villa want to gain promotion to the Premier League this year and they have a more than decent squad!

Bennett gave us unexpected hope when he found the net with a fierce shot, but once again we conceded two goals in the final stages of the game. First it was Adomah who applied the finish when Steele let the ball run free after Ayew had driven the ball low towards the goal. And just a few minutes later Gestede scored with a long shot to dash our hope.

One more, a bit of a blow. But if truth be told, we did well, especially in the first half, only Villa were the better team and of course they had the home advantage. In fact, we were fortunate that their captain (Mile Jedinak) had an off-day.
    Spoiler!

So we lost our first league match, but you can't win them all and we are still doing a lot better than anticipated so far. And we certainly hope to stay in the race for a long, long time!

    Gallagher signs a five-year contract

Just before the transfer window closed Sam Gallagher (on loan from Southampton) signed a lucrative multi-year contract.

    Spoiler!

Gallagher is a useful player who can replace Lens when needed.
