Rovers eliminate Hammers from FA Cup

On Sunday 26th January we played West Ham United in front of a crowd of 16,271 and after a good fight we succeeded in eliminating our opponents from the FA Cup Fourth Round.

We played the Hammers in the strongest possible formation with Besic, Clasie and Chirivella (back from his injury) ruling in midfield and scoring both of our goals as well!

Unfortunately Chirivelli had to go off injured again.

The first few minutes were for the Hammers when Zaza tried his luck with a low and hard shot, but Laszló got down to turn the ball behind. Narsingh took the corner but Laszló confidently fisted the ball away.

After those first few minutes we took control of the game and with 32 minutes on the clock Besic got past Oblang and jinked past Burke and scored a fine goal!

Just before the break Besic was important again when he provided the assist for Clasie who scored our very timely second goal with a fierce shot.

In the second half, just when we were about to make a substitution, West Ham almost got a lifeline when Lanzini scored, only for some obscure reason it was disallowed(?). We brought on Wahlqvist for Nyambe and the game continued.
    Spoiler!

Unfortunately a little later Chirivella picked up a knock and so he had to go off injured. Duelund was brought on to replace him and he played quite well.

With Clasie and Chirivella back we simply ruled in midfield! Besic was named Man-of-the-Match again. Laszló was also brilliant again. The big question is, will Steele remain our first goalkeeper next year??
    Spoiler!

Unfortunately we will have to play an away game in the FA Cup Fifth Round, most likely against none other than Chelsea!

    Injuries and other Rovers news

It's hard to believe, but Chirivella will be out for another full month, this time with a twisted ankle! He is hardly back from his previous injury and playing so well alongside Jordy Clasie but here he is, injured again!

At least Grimes will get game time again, but this is not what we needed right now!

    Spoiler!

And it's not only Chirivella who is injured. Whalqvist will also be out for about three weeks with a damaged shoulder!

Meanwhile, Besic is playing remarkably well again, just like last season. And our star player continues to draw the attention of rival managers and their clubs.

Finally, youth player Connor Thompson signed a contract with Motherwell. Thompson never even played a single game for the reserves, so the cash is welcome!

The replay is at Swindon, so you never know.

Solid win and another clean sheet, but Chiv is a worry when youhave only just managed to get him on a permanent game.

(Could you lend some of these players to the real Rovers for this weekend please. They need all the help they can get.)

    Very impressive cup win

Love that random dissallowed goal from the spoiler - never seen that before!

Could be a tough next tie away if it is indeed Chelsea

    Pedro

    And Wahl as well

Is Besic happy enough? How long left on his contract? He's been colossal for you

Good win - Let's hope Swindon can pull off a surprise. Bad luck with injuries again though.

I'll remember that, but for now Rovers is enough of a challenge!

Yes, isn't it odd? During the match, too, the goal was mentioned but no word of it being disallowed.

As to Besic, he has a contract until 7.6.2024 (!) and whether he is happy or not, I think one can safely say that he is not a complainer.

Rovers upset Liverpool in EFL Cup

We had already defeated Liverpool (0-2) at Anfield at the beginning of this Premier League season and on Wednesday 30th January we managed to pull off this remarkable feat for a second time!

Clasie scored an early goal which was ruled out, but in the second half Marshall put us in the lead and after Burn had been sent off and Liverpool had to finish the match with ten men it was Fekir who scored his 19th goal of the season!

We could not have wished for a better result in the first leg! Clasie found the net with just thirteen minutes on the clock, but Besic had strayed fractionally offside. However, it set the tone for the match.

We continued to play well with Grimes replacing the injured Pedro Chirivella and with László replacing Steele (as he does in all of our Cup matches) and it was good old Ben Marshall who scored five minutes into the second half after a fantastic pass into the area by Clasie.

Of course Liverpool desperately tried to get back into the match, but their attacking line was frustrated by László and then Clasie took the ball down the right of the field and tried to take it past Burn who slid through our Dutch midfielder and was shown his second yellow card and sent off! So Liverpool had to finish the match with ten men now.

We felt there was more and to make things easier for us for the return match Fekir actually did score our second goal with a hard and low shot which totally silenced the crowd!

László was brilliant again in his third Cup match for the club. He was named Man-of-the-Match this time.
    Spoiler!

There is not much rest for us. After these two very successful Cup matches it's time to focus on the Premier League again, starting with an away game at Leicester. And it's important that we don't underestimate our opponents!

    Rovers defeat Foxes

On Saturday 2nd February we played Leicester at the King Power Stadium and in the end we defeated them 1-4 although it wasn't as easy as the scoreline would indicate.

Leicester played with one single striker, Ahmed Musa, so they started out with Vardy on the bench. We had Nyambe mark Musa and initially things looked good for us as Lens managed to get past Morrison and score with a fine strike to give us an early lead!

And with twenty-nine minutes on the clock Fekir doubled our lead by driving the ball in low and scoring his 20th goal of the season!

But Leicester also create some scoring chances and Nyambe did not look good. Musa dribbled past him more than once.

In the second half we brought on Aké for Flanagan, who had been shown a yellow card, and we had Martins Indi mark Musa now. But even so the fast and creative forward found Mahrez, who used his skill to go past Nyambe and score with a lovely strike!

We finally decided to bring off Nyambe and we brought on Chalobah and had him mark Musa. And that went remarkably well! Chalobah played fantastically and we slowly seized control of the game again!

With two late goals, one by Grimes who brought the ball into the area and struck it with fury, and one by Clasie, we sealed the victory and left the King Power Stadium with the three points in the bag!

So we continue our good run. Chalobah was important today as he helped turn the tide. As a matter of fact, even though he played barely half an hour, he was named Man-of-the-Match!
    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace lost at home to Tottenham (0-2) and Chelsea lost at home to Man City (1-3) so the race for European football is actually getting more interesting than the title race!

    Spoiler!

Flanagan will be banned for one match after collecting his fifth yellow card today. And of course Chirivella will be out for three more weeks (and Wahlqvist for two more weeks) but at least Grimes has been playing quite well so far.

Still, Brentford should not be a problem. It's only that after that we shall have to play Arsenal and then Liverpool twice, still without Chirivella.

Fantastic result. Just the boost that the European qualification campaign needed. Palace and Chelsea results helped to make a great weekend. 3 points from Brentford shoud keep the head on and although you have some tough games to follow, those above you will have tough games too.

2nd place finish seems ambitious, AJ! Got to aim high though, I suppose. See how you get on with these tough games coming up after Brentford and then re-evaluate where you are... I think you'll keep progressing though on last season's performance.

    Rovers easily defeat Brentford

On Wednesday 6th February we defeated Brentford in front of a crowd of 33,178 while there where some surprising results elsewhere!

As was more or less expected, we won our match without any difficulty. Grimes showed his value as super-sub again, while Aké did a superb job replacing the banned Jon Flanagan.

Fekir scored with just nine minutes on the clock, but it was ruled out as Clasie was offside, but it did not take long for him to score again after Martins Indi had passed the ball into the area looking for our striker. Fekir tried a volley and scored a lovely goal!

We remained in charge of the game but we had to wait until just before half-time when it was Grimes' turn to score again. Our super-sub blasted the ball towards the top corner and found the back of the net with Tzanev looking despondent.

We started the second half with Chalabah for Henley, who was not quite fit, and with thirty minutes remaining Aké crossed the ball low from the left and Marshall shot hard and low and scored our third goal!

Duelund also got some game time after that but the scoreline remained 3-0 until the final whistle.

An easy victory. Nyambe was named Man-of-the-Match.
    Spoiler!

We had to win this game as we will be playing four very challenging games next against Arsenal, Liverpool (twice) and Man City! But then again, we have already beaten Liverpool twice at Anfield this season, so we don't need to be afraid of them.

    Spoiler!

Meanwhile, Fekir set a new club record with his 21st goal of the season! He has proved himself to be as good as we hoped he'd be!

Not sure about Grimes being a super sub when he started the game, but I guess that is quite a rarity. The next run of games will test out your European credentials, but come out of that even or better and you will be in with a great shout. Palace can't keep on going.

Why are you worried about lowly Liverpool ?

An expected victory but a very convincing one too!

Nyambe is looking good - How does he look nowadays in comparison to when he first broke through?

There were a few doubts about Fekir but he's proved you right

Nyambe has become a very important first team player! Here are his stats of two years ago (at age 20) and his currents stats, at age 22.

A fine win and a good run you are in - must be one of the form teams in the league

But yes - tough run coming up against the mighty Liverpool et al - get through those games with a decent haul of points and maybe a challenge for the top 4 can become reality!

I must admit I raised my eyebrows when you signed Fekir, but it looks a steal now, I always considered him on my saves but always opted for someone else, I may have to give him a go now.

It was a gamble. The fact that he used to be called "the new Messi" caught my attention although it means nothing, of course!
