Dream Team League - Season 11

Dream Team League - Season 11

And so it begins... The 11th instalment of the Dream Team League!

Following the end of season 10, things have certainly been interesting within the DTL. There are no new faces per sť but we have welcomed back Erkifino into the fold as he returns to the hot seat at Villa Park where he had left behind a star studded squad. vinjwoods had taken over from him initially but was soon resigned from the competition without making any changes to the squad itself so Aston Villa remains very much Erkifino's squad. Armed with that massive warchest, Erkifino wasted no time in being active, spending 140.9 on new faces and moving a number of players on for 91.1. Some of the big names arriving at Villa Park include Neymar himself and Eden Hazard, plus the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Daniel Carvajal and Romelu Lukaku in deals with other DTL managers!

There were also two other managerial changes within the DTL as Mark stepped down as manager of Middlesbrough despite leading them to promotion from the Championship last season. Instead, he takes on the challenge of building a squad from scratch at Arsenal, spending just 3.4 on 23 players to get things started at the Emirates Stadium.

Stepping down at Middlesbrough will leave 9 unmanaged teams in the Premiership for the season ahead with squads that had previously been put together by former managers of the DTL (Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich, Liverpool, Man City, Middlesbrough and West Ham). The more eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted that Everton feature for the first time as an unmanaged outfit after unfortunate circumstances saw Fods resigned from his role at Goodison Park.

West Brom will be a 10th side overall with a squad put together already but also unmanaged although they feature in the Championship. They will no doubt be one of the favourites to earn promotion along with the two managers fighting it out in there to win the title. drkshadow1 at AFC Wimbledon was left disappointed by playoff failure last season which means another season in the Championship. He has gone about his business quietly this year, selling only 3 players and adding 16 new faces to his squad with Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi being big name signings. Competing with him having earned back to back promotions at Plymouth is pyromyst who has made 19 signings of his own, all through auctions after refusing to participate in deals with his fellow managers. The signature of Marco Bueno has probably been the pick of his signings for the season ahead.

Back to the top flight - It's been business as usual for the rest of our DTL managers. Janis89 has been unusually quiet this year in terms of haggles without any big names added to his squad whilst both trunky and AJ have been the most active as usual, trunky adding to some star names with Bernd Leno, Douglas Costa and Felipe Anderson joining Pompey and Redknapp69 has been driving a hard bargain as per which has seen limited activity at Swanea! peaceboy at Derby looked to have assembled a decent squad but then made some last minute sales which seems to have left his squad looking light defensively. Still, you cannot deny that adding Karim Benzema to the squad will have left his supporters anticipating what the French striker can do for the club. Over at Hull, AMC was late to the party, failing to sell any players when they were offered to teams overseas which saw just 7 sales to DTL managers, bringing in 11 signings with Alexandre Lacazette topping the list. samsami too was fairly quiet as usual in the transfer market as well, keeping to his method of a small squad at Newcastle and ebfatz has continued his British-only policy at Norwich, managing to bring in Jamie Vardy, Phil Jones, Ryan Shawcross and Ben Davies as potential starters at Carrow Road. The most curious transfer of all was the arrival of Pierre-Emrick Aubameyang at Southampton for 57.4, a signing which Dermotron was clearly delighted with. That's why it was then bizarre to see the striker sold on to Aston Villa along with Henrikh Mkhitaryan before the transfer window closed! It's true that Dermotron got Gonzalo Higuain and Toni Kroos in exchange but you certainly didn't expect it!

At last the transfer window closed and now the real business can get started. The DTL Committee, as they had done last year, arranged friendlies to be played between all of the DTL managers before the season officially started and it gave our managers the opportunity to try out formations and give chances to those who may not necessarily have been in the frame to start in August.

AFC Wimbledon start off with a home frienfdly against Mark's Arsenal. It took 24 minutes for them to go 2:0 up thanks to Wallace and Origi. Arsenal equalised with two goals in the second half but Mikel Merino scored a 90th minute winner. The toughest friendly followed as the team travelled to Villa Park and did very well indeed to play out a 0:0 draw although they did manage just one shot on target!

Next up is a friendly at home to Derby before the season kicks off. drkshadow1 may want to conclude the squad status of several players before then and will need to note that Joe Corona has been injured for 3 months after pulling up on international duty for the USA whilst Souahilo Meite will be back in a day from a broken nose.

In other news, drkshadow1 will kick off their League Cup campaign against Grimsby next month.

Mark has already publicly admitted that staying up will be an achievement for Arsenal this season. His small squad suffered a 3:2 defeat at AFC Wimbledon with Mark Davies and Clement Grenier scoring which may have disappointed the fans. However, Tomoya Koyamatsu was on target in the next friendly as AMC's Hull were beaten 1:0. Next up is an away trip to Man Utd in the final friendly and thankfully, there are no injuries to worry about.

Perhaps wisely, Erkifino has chosen to field under-strength sides for Aston Villa's friendlies. That is perhaps why they managed only a 2:2 draw at Newcastle to begin with although Federico Ricci and Aubameyang did put Erkifino up twice against samsami. They then managed another draw against Championship side AFC Wimbledon. Erkifino though won't be worried about that - Instead, it will be the news that Edinson Cavani was injured on international duty for Uruguay and Casemiro was also injured in training. Angel Di Maria too was injured at the World Cup Qualifiers but has already recovered.

Benzema made an immediate impact for peaceboy, opening the scoring at Plymouth in Derby's first friendly but the result was 2:2 with Alvaro Negredo scoring the other after coming off the bench. Derby then welcomed trunky's Portsmouth but lost 1:0, conceding to their only shot on target. Next up is AFC Wimbledon away with a full squad to choose from.

Choosing to field a fringe side to start with, AMC's Hull got off to a good start with a 2:1 win over Dermotron's Southampton, Hiroshi Kiyotake and Kevin Gameiro scoring the goals. But the Tigers then put in a below par performance at Arsenal to lose 1:0 to Mark. Hull will now play Swansea with only a 2 week injury to Jeremy Pied to concern AMC.

Pre-season has not been kind to Janis89 after losing 1:0 to both Tottenham and Newcastle. Statistically, they played well in both games though but Diego Costa was sent off against samsami's side. They'll now play Arsenal with only a minor injury to Pedro to worry about.

Preparations are going well for Newcastle as they drew 2:2 in a tough game against Aston Villa. Erkifino's side did take the lead twice but Radja Nainggolan and Andrea Poli cancelled each goal out. Luciano Vietto was the man who came off the bench against Man Utd to score in their second friendly to win the game. samsami will now take on Plymouth.

ebfatz wanted to field a low-key side for his friendlies but some of the bigger names were included against Portsmouth which saw a 2:0 win thanks to Vardy and Jordan Henderson. Alex Chamberlain was on the scoresheet in the second friendly at Southampton but Norwich lost 3:1. Next up is a tricky home friendly against Erkifino's Aston Villa with only Henderson currently injured but only for a few more days.

With Plymouth now only one league away from the top flight, playing Derby and Swansea would be a good test for pyromyst to get the measure of his squad. They did well against Derby, seeing Welliton and Andre-Pierre Gignac score in a 2:2 draw. However, Swansea had too much for them on their own turf as Plymouth lost 3:0.

Newcastle will be the third and final friendly for pyromyst at home before the season gets started. Plymouth will also have an away trip at Luton following the first round draw for the League Cup.

trunky has lined his side up in a unfamiliar 4-4-2 formation for pre-season. The first friendly resulted in a 2:0 defeat to ebfatz's Norwich where Alberto Grassi was injured. They then travelled to Derby and picked up a 1:0 win thanks to Callum Wilson. Next is a tough one against Portsmouth. Meanwhile, Grassi will be back in a few days after his injury.

A 2:1 defeat at Hull started pre-season off for Southampton with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring in between both Hull strikes. Returning to Southampton for the next game against Norwich, has Toni Kroos proved that the team won't need Aubameyang after all? He struck twice in a 3:1 win with Oscar scoring the other.

Swansea are one of two teams to play just one friendly so far and they did their business well, winning 3:0 against Plymouth. Robert Lewandowski got the ball rolling there with Luis Suarez scoring the other two. They'll now play Hull in August before the season begins with only a 2 week injury for Sven Bender for Redknapp69 to think about.

Along with Redknapp69, AJ only had one game to play in July and that was a friendly against old foe Janis89. He comes out on top with a goal from Alvaro Morata although Aaron Ramsey did go off with an injury which he has now recovered from. Meanwhile, Angel Correa (3 weeks). Arturo Vidal (2 weeks) and Simon Kjaer (1 week) are injuries for AJ to ponder.

Pierre should be on extended holidays. Damn Assistant!
Unbeaten. Squad depth should cushion the injuries to Angel, Casemiro and Cavani. PSG would be screwed though!!

Great to see this back. Great to be back!

Dream Team League - Season 11 - August

August begins with the news that the Champions League Third Qualifying Phase has been drawn. It'll see Tottenham included and they have been handed a home tie against SJK of Finland to begin with who currently have no players. Dermotron's Southampton are also involved and will take on FC Kobenhavn who have just the one player in their ranks.

The final round of friendlies took place as action got officially underway for the month. Mark's Arsenal lost 1:0 to Janis89 (Ibrahimovic), Erkifino saw Aston Villa (Bonucci, Neymar x3, Muller) smash Norwich (Redmond x2) 5:2, drkshadow1 recorded a good 2:1 win (Assombalonga x2) over peaceboy (Benzema), AMC lost 3:0 to Swansea (Gonalons, Suarez x2) after having Knoche sent off, samsami suffered a disappointing 1:0 defeat to Plymouth (Bueno) and game of the day was surely a 2:0 win for trunky (Dzeko x2) over AJ's Tottenham.

But the first official games of the season took place in the aforementioned Champions League Qualifiers as Tottenham and Southampton started their first legs with 5:0 (Riedewald, Mertens x2, Alario x2) and 4:0 (Oyarzabal x2, Fabinho and Kroos) wins!

As the weekend arrived, so did Championship football. drkshadow1 (AFC Wimbledon) and pyromyst (Plymouth) were now the only managers featuring in England's second tier with the former recording a narrow 2:1 win over Huddersfield (Origi x2) on the Saturday whilst Plymouth beat Q.P.R. 3:1 (Bueno x2, Welliton).

The Community Shield also took place on the same day where two of the DTL's top managers went head to head as Erkifino took on Janis89. The returning Aston Villa manager was denied a 6th victory as Janis89 won the trophy for only a second time in a 3:2 thriller. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had given Aston Villa the lead on his debut but strike trio Sergio Aguero, Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa all struck each to turn the game around, leaving Kevin de Bruyne's goal as no more than a consolation goal for Erkifino. Congratulations, Janis89

Six days later, the much anticipated Premiership season got underway with Newcastle as the first team to top the table after a 3:0 win over Man City (Icardi, Nainggolan, Bolasie). They were closely followed by Southampton who managed 5 goals (Oscar x2, Torres, Higuain x2) against Norwich who scored three (Hourihane, Antonio, Redmond) but ebfatz saw Antonio sent off. 3rd was surprisingly Arsenal as Mark beat Ipswich 3:1 (Labidi, Grenier, Munoz) whilst Aston Villa got off to a win as expected against Crystal Palace (Hazard, Aubameyang). Swansea defeated 10 men Middlesbrough 2:0 (Dahoud, Suarez) and Portsmouth pulled off a shock in beating Man Utd 1:0 (Poulsen). Derby (Schneiderlin) played out a 1:1 draw at Hull (Turan) and AJ kicked off with a draw at home too against Fulham which could have been worse after Sergi Roberto was sent off after 44 minutes.

In the Championship, drkshadow1 moved up to 3rd with a 3:2 win over Stoke (Arnautovic, Origi, Assombalonga) but dropped down to 4th the following day when Plymouth beat Brentford 4:0 (Welliton x2, Garcia, Baker) to top the table.

Some Premiership teams had just 3 days to recover before a crunch game took place already between Swansea and Aston Villa. It was Redknapp69 who emerges as the winner as Matuidi and Coman scored to put Swansea top whilst Di Maria scored the only goal for Erkifino. Mark's Arsenal also featured on Tuesday evening but despite goals from Munoz and Grenier, lost 3:2 to Chelsea.

Meanwhile, the Football League Cup competition began with a 1:0 (Assombalonga) win for AFC Wimbledon against Grimsby and a 3:0 (Augustinsson, Gignac, Bueno) win for Plymouth at Luton. drkshadow1 will play Bournemouth in the next round whilst pyromyst will face Watford. Some Premiership teams have also joined in with peaceboy facing Birmingham, ebfatz facing Bristol City and Mark facing Brentford.

The following evening saw Tottenham beat SKJ 2:0 (Alario x2) and FC Kobenhavn beaten 1:0 (Oyarzabal) by Southampton as both teams confirmed their spots in the Champions League proper. Dermotron will see Ajax, Club Brugge and FC Bayern in Group D, AJ will play Lyon, Olympiacos and Real Madrid whilst Redknapp69 will take on CSKA, Dinamo Moscow and Porto. Janis89 will also be involved, facing Dortmund, Red Star and Roma.

In the Premiership, another 1:0 win for trunky (Felipe Anderson) saw Liverpool beaten despite Savic being sent off after 8 minutes whilst Hull rose to 4th with a 2:0 win (Bacca, Silva) at Man City. Newcastle suffered defeat at Everton despite Dybala scoring and peaceboy's Derby drew 1:1 again (Benzema) against Middlesbrough. Goals from Koke (x2), Diego Costa and Ibrahimovic helped Janis89 beat Crystal Palace to bounce back from their opening day defeat.

At this stage of the month, the Europa League draw was made for the 2nd Round where Portsmouth and Hull were entered as the former are to play Cukaricki and the latter will face Sileks.

Viewers were in for a Friday night treat as Aston Villa took on Sevila in the Super Cup at Madrid. Sevilla had only 8 former DTL players (Ousted, Maidana, Canella, Bartra, Alvarez, Candeias, Lavezzi and Altidore) which of course made Erkifino favourite to win for a second time, having won it five seasons ago. Bonucci was sent off in the 90th minute but the job was done thanks to Aubameyang and an own goal from Maidana! Congratulations, Erkifino

Back to domestic action on the Saturday, Hull moved into 2nd place with a 2:0 win over Everton (Knoche, Bacca). 3rd was Southampton with a 3:1 win over Fulham (Raul Garcia, Higuain x2) and all eyes were on Old Trafford as Janis89 beat Redknapp69 2:0 (Diego Costa x2).

Over in the Championship, pyromyst is held to a draw as Blackburn drew 2:2 (Baker x2) which allows drkshadow1 to go top thanks to AFC Wimbledon beating Wolves 3:0 (Perotti, Origi, Assombalonga).

Super Sunday results in a 3:0 hammering for Mark as samsami (Nainggolan, Icardi, Wijnaldum) moves into 3rd place. A 2:1 win for AJ (Lallana, Nacho Fernandez) gave Spurs their first win of the season with Douglas Costa scoring for trunky.

Monday Night Football not only saw a 1:1 draw for Norwich (Rooney) against West Ham which left them 16th but both AFC Wimbledon (1:0 against Birmingham - Carroll) and Pymouth (4:1 against Sheff Wed - van Aanholt, Lungu, Baumgartl, Rodriguez) record wins in the Championship to stay in the top two.

4 from 4. A long time since the Saints had a month like that

Oyarzabal looking like he might be first team material.

How queer. In my 1 run through United hammered us and we beat Liverpool and Spurs.

Turns out it was still 2 wins out of 3 though.

    Cheers Markus. DTL rocks!

Origi and Higuain banging them in!

Congrats Janis on the Charity Shield. Nice to see Bendetto getting a run out instead of Muller...

CPU team storming to the top. Hope to put that loss v Swans behind us.

Interesting to see how Mark's gunners will perform.

Championship a 2 horse race already?!

    Yesssssssssssssss - this is back!

Wow - really battered Hull in Pre season!

Hmmmmmmmm - 6 from 9 is about par really

Did play Janis and Erk though so 2 huge teams there

Reasonable happy but do not want to be losing against our rivals (although delighted to beat the start studded Erk!)

Looks like a hum dinger v Erk where he was unlucky not to get a point but our shooting boots were left in Wales when we played Janis - not 1 shot on target

Dream Team League - Season 11 - September

The Dream Team League moves into September as rumours are rife that two new faces will be joining the competition for next month. einsi87 and rakanj are the bookies favourites to take over vacant teams in the top flight, most likely to be hired at Manchester City and Everton. The month kicks off with international fixtures which will worry most managers in case of injuries. It isn't until the 10th September when domestic football finally gets underway!

    10th September
    Premier League
    Aston Villa 0:0 Norwich
    Hull 0:1 West Ham
    Ipswich 4:1 Swansea
    Man Utd 1:1 Tottenham
    Southampton 3:1 Liverpool

Shocks all round as Norwich are able to hold title favourites Aston Villa to a draw at Villa Park. AMC's Hull lose against West Ham but the biggest shock has to be a 4:1 defeat by Redknapp69 at Ipswich, thanks largely to a 15th minute red card to Marc-Andre ter Stegen although it's worth noting that Ipswich were already 2 goals ahead at this point! Elsewhere, Dermotron moves to the top of the table with a win over Liverpool whilst honours are even between AJ and Janis89.

    Championship
    AFC Wimbledon 1:0 Cardiff
    West Brom 1:2 Plymouth

Wins for both drkshadow1 and pyromyst who remain in the top two, the latter facing a tough game against an already assembled West Brom squad left behind from the days of Zakkery managing them.

    11th September
    Premier League
    Arsenal 2:2 Derby
    Newcastle 1:2 Portsmouth

Mark and peaceboy play out a score draw whilst samsami suffers defeat to trunky who rises to 3rd.

    13h September
    Champions League, Phase 1
    Tottenham 2:0 Real Madrid
    Swansea 2:0 Porto
    FC bayern 1:4 Southampton

Wins for all three English sides on the night as the Champions League group stages gets underway.

    14th September
    Champions League, Phase 1
    Roma 1:3 Man Utd
    Aston Villa 2:0 Leverkusen

Janis89 and Erkifino makes it 5/5 for the English teams winning in the Champions League.

    Championship
    Plymouth 1:0 Wolves
    Sunderland 0:1 AFC Wimbledon

Business as usual for the top two with drkshadow being two points clear of pyromyst who ended with 10 men against Wolves as Timo Baumgartl was dismissed after 63 minutes. Omar Mascarell had then scored the winning in the 78th minute.

    15th September
Europa League - Second Round - First Leg
    Cukaricki 0:4 Portsmouth
    Sileks 1:5 Hull

There are four English teams participating in the Europa League but with Man City (for now) and West Ham unmanaged, trunky and AMC are the only managers featuring as a Javier Pastore and Carlos Bacca hat-trick help their sides to victory.

    17th September
    Premier League
    Derby 4:1 Ipswich
    Everton 0:2 Southampton
    Fulham 2:3 Aston Villa
    Norwich 0:2 Man Utd
    Tottenham 1:0 Liverpool

    20th September
    Champions League, Phase 1
    Man Utd 4:0 Dortmund
    Benfica 1:1 Aston Villa

Janis89 makes it 2/2 in his group but Erkifino can only draw at Benfica who do have 9 ex-DTL players. But AstoN Villa stay top of their group anyhow.

    21st September
    Champions League, Phase 1
    Olympiacos 1:2 Tottenham
    CSKA 0:6 Swansea
    Southampton 4:1 Ajax

CSKA have 15 ex-DTL players yet cannot avoid a 6:0 hammering from Redknapp69 whilst Dermotron and AJ stay top of their groups too with wins.

    Hull 4:0 Crystal Palace
    Man Utd 2:1 Fulham
    Middlesbrough 2:4 Portsmouth

Change all round in the table as an AJ win over Dermotron sees Southampton drop from 1st to 3rd with AMC moving to the top thanks to beating Crystal Palace whilst Janis89 moves to 2nd. Also recording an impressive win is samsami as Redknapp69 just can't get going this season yet after losing 2:1 at Newcastle.

An easy win for pyromyst to close the gap back to 2 points, despite again finishing with 10 men with Manoel sent off this time.

    25th September
    Premier League
    Arsenal 1:0 Everton
    Liverpool 1:3 Norwich

A much needed win for ebfatz at the 5th time of asking this season, moving up to 16th. Mark also manages a win to keep surprising people by staying away from the bottom three.

    Lyon 0:2 Tottenham
    Swansea 2:0 Dinamo Zagreb

    Championship
    Brighton 1:0 AFC Wimbledon
    Plymouth 1:0 Barnsley

A shock is in store as drkshadow1 loses his 100% start to the season with defeat at Brighton, thanks to Frederic Guilbert earning a second yellow after 30 minutes. That's all that pyromyst needed to move into 1st place by a point.

    29th September
Europa League, Second Round, Second Leg
    Hull 3:0 Sileks
    Portsmouth 0:1 Cukaricki
